From Eric Johnson, there is a sequel to his story in Star Frontiersman #17, “Bug Hunt”. It is “Hunger of the Shadow”. And you thought Bladen and Gruk’s adventure was over.

I was going through some old Star Frontiers websites and found some great stuff. Andy Campbell over at the Star Frontiers Underground on Yahoo gave me permission to print some of his old articles. So I have included a large part of that in this issue.

I would like to thank the community of Frontier men and women who read this magazine. Without all of the interest and submissions, this magazine would not have gotten this far.

Hello explorers!

The Sathar are coming!  Issue 6 of the Frontier Explorer is now available for download. This issue focuses on the Sathar and provides a wealth of information on how to integrate the sathar into your campaign.  Most of the content is rules agnostic and would allow the inclusion of the sathar regardless of the game system.

Articles include information on sathar society and military organization, an adventure introducing a possible sathar defector, a look at possible interactions with the sathar and the megacorps, and a look at hypnotism.  We also introduce the first of a series of articles looking at converting Star Frontiers material to the Stars Without Number game system.  In this issue we look at converting the sathar attack monsters.

Welcome to the third installment of the Spell Works Compendium.  Under the direction of Milnizer the Maligned--I mean Magnificent--we have compiled a list of more than sixty spells for your spell casting pleasure.

In this installment we look at spells that pack more of a punch, spells that linger until it is triggered, and spells that may be delayed while temporarily stored in a small object. Unshackled spells do more damage, have larger area of effect, and may be harder to resist than normal spells but at a cost of two spell slots. Trigger spells lie dormant until activated by an unknowing trespasser, some may be cast in doorways or portals while others may be cast in an area or on an object. Delayed spells allow the caster to impart the spell effect into a containing object until it is released.

We also have a few new spells from the good witch Sara including bubbles that flash when they pop and spells that create temporary shelters while out in the wild. Of course, we have several new spells from our new benefactor Milnizer, the arch-mage from the Lost Island.

    Higgins Boat

    The Higgins Boat is a 28mm pdf model of the World War II LCVP.   This was the little landing boat Ike said won the war.  The model comes with a detailed interior and measures about seven and a half inches by three inches.  The interior is about one inch deep.  The landing ramp is designed so it can be glued permanently up or down or flexibly attached to move as needed.  As there were many versions of the Higgins Boat with numerous differences in detail, the Finger and Toe model represents a generic model which can be used in any theater of war or patrol rivers and islets in post-war years.  You could even smuggle contraband up jungle streams or support a party of post-war archaeologists searching for lost temples.

    Take another journey with us back to 1974, when a small wargame club in Amarillo Texas (led by Steve Cole) produced an award-winning magazine filled with articles, variants, and reviews. Production values had not improved, and we still printed on that insane 14" paper. (The pages are divided in half for this PDF version.) Cover art by James McNease (aka "The Wazoo").

    This issue includes several features:

    • The usual editorials, news, and some flamewar stuff.
    • Chess as a wargame.
    • A review of a game we published (Rigelian Wars). Turns out, we could not spell Rigellian.
    • The World War III super-variant. This was a series of extension maps for an SPI NATO game adding Austria, Denmark, Berlin, Northern Norway, the Balkans, and Taiwan. Rules were included to play the game simultaneously with other games covering the Middle East and China.
    • There was a huge section of Q&A about military history, terms, tactics, and equipment.
    • Other articles/variants included Bismarck, Diplomacy, Heavy Cruiser, Kriegsmarine, and others.

    Quality varies from page to page, as this is a scan of a 39-year-old copy that wasn't printed very well (from typewritten plates). Some pages are difficult to read but are the best we can do and you can, with patience, figure them out.

    Mechanized Narrative

    When some folks think of storytelling games, they think of games without a central game master or dice or task resolution system. This is not always the case.     Low to No Prep Before Play

    You'll find it remarkably easy to get going. In fact, if you use the playset found in the book (the town of Ebon Eaves), you don't have to do any prep whatsoever.

    Ideal for 1 to 5 Players (and one Keeper)

    With horror games, small groups are usually better, but too small and they don't work at all. tremulus handles a broad number of players effortlessly. During the playtesting of the game, it was discovered that tremulus not only plays well, it plays exceedingly well with just one player. This complements weird literature perfectly, as there is often only a central, solitary protagonist. As with any game, more than five players can be a bit much, and can actually detract from the atmosphere of the story. For group play, the sweet spot seems to be three or four players.

    Why Does It Work Well with Small Groups?

    tremulus works so well for small groups because all characters begin with the same common moves . These allow them to do all the things you'd expect protagonists to do to one degree or another. The special moves each character has are specific to their role, be they a doctor, dilettante, or detective. Each player also gets a Lore move unique to their character as well.  (No. We shan't be talking about Lore moves here quite yet. Yes. We're horrible. And we're sorry.)

    Flexible Character Choice and the Playbook

    Choosing the type of character you want to play is integral to the roleplaying experience. In tremulus, you have eleven classic characters to choose from in the core book. Additional playbook sets and playsets are available. Each of these choices has an attendant playbook, which is all each player needs to play the game. There is a brief background, choices of name, looks, and so on, and places to keep track of attributes. Everything you need as a player will be included on a tailored, printable playbook. There is niche protection, as no two players may use the same playbook, and when death or madness occurs, you can just get a new playbook and jump back in.

    What Playbooks Are Found in tremulus?

    There are eleven classic archetypes: The Alienist, The Antiquarian, The Author, The Devout, The Detective, The Dilettante, The Doctor, The Heir, The Journalist, The Professor, and The Salesman.

    Exotic Encounters: Cyclopes

                The Pathfinder Bestiary, and the long line of monstrous encyclopedia that came before it, do a great job of attacking the problem of providing game statistics and mechanical information for a very wide variety of creatures. There are a lot of strange creatures from fantasy novels and movies, from ancient mythology, and, as time went on, from the twisted minds of game designers and even GMs, for that matter. Anyone today who tried to go about creating an extensive bestiary of all the different cool and interesting fantasy monsters could fill three or four volumes with three hundred monsters each, and still have a long way left to go, with fans crying out for various “forgotten” monsters to get some attention. That kind of breadth doesn’t leave a whole lot of room for depth, and that’s where Exotic Encounters comes in.

     

                There are all kinds of reasons why you might not want to use a monster stat-block straight from the core rules. For one thing, if your players have a habit of browsing through such books, or are long-time veterans who know the basic ins and outs of most fantasy staples, you may need an unusual stat-block just to throw them a curve ball and teach them that they can’t count on their out of character knowledge to take all the mystery out of the game. Alternatively, many GMs can recall a time when they wanted to make use of a certain monster in their game, only to find that it was a few CRs too high or low for what they had in mind.

     

                Exotic Encounters takes a single, iconic monster, and creates three new variants on that theme. These variants aren’t simple tweaks, and are more than simply advancing or removing Hit Dice, though that occurs as well. Each of these three variations on the monster’s theme has a specific, flavorful goal in mind, and a role to play, and their statistics entries are gently massaged in order to make them fit those roles. Further, each of these variants comes with brand new specially-crafted special abilities, which are unique to Exotic Encounters and not found anywhere else.

     

                    This particular installment of Exotic Encounters focuses on the cyclops. These terrible, one-eyed monsters have plagued human imagination since antiquity, and, in some recent campaign settings, are depicted as having ancient roots themselves, and being the descendants of a mighty empire of diviners, which fell long ago. The first cyclops in this book, the baleye cyclops (CR 9) represents a cyclops that took a different path, honing his eye for use with evocation, not divination, which can fire deadly rays from his eye, and which is vulnerable to attacks made against his eyes. The second cyclops, the cyclops brute (CR 12) is more typical of modern interpretations of cyclopes as large, hulking, stupid creatures. Larger than his kin, the cyclops brute is truly vicious in combat, and can crush his foes into the ground with a terrible foot stomp. Finally, the cyclops seer (CR 15) represents a cyclops who has tapped into the strong divination powers of his ancestors, and who can see the world for what it truly is, as well as influence the future with ease, making him a terrible foe to face.
