[OpNet] There a Doctor In The House?

Recommended Posts

Umm, look, I'm not good at his sort of thing, so... don't laugh or nothing.

1. I think I'm losing my mind. My abilities sometimes leave me with fragments of someone eles's psyche. After I release my ability, the whispers sometimes remain, some have never left. They don't grant me insight or any nifty stuff like that, they just babble, tens of hundreds of whispers overlapping constantly. I'm poppin percocet like candy and they just keep getting louder.

2. The more juice I expend the bluer I become. Why the hell is that happening!!! I thought if you looked like a feak is was always on unless you dormed. What's worse, the bluer I get the meaner I get, it's like the whispers are clawing, scratching at my head tempting me to hurt people, break things, messed up stuff like that.

The reason I need advice is, well, unless someone knows where I get my percocet dosage upped, I need to know if there is a place "our kind" can go. An don't say those clinics cuz I'm not going there. Look someone out there, as uber smart as we can get, has had to of opened up a shadow slinic, a place where we get taken care of by us or at least someone who will take a look at a fellow and not ask to many questions.

Anybody know a good doctor?

What's happenning is what the popular press likes to call 'taint'. The unintended quantum side-effects that are a part of our quantum expression. The Terats say it's a part of our evolution, a normal expression of ourselves, and they claim to have a method by which these changes can be channeled.

The standard response to this kind of thing is to do what you're asking: prescribe drugs. In heavier and heavier doses as the nova's metabolism becomes strong enough to ignore smaller dosages. This is a rather short-sighted solution.

There are also mental exercises or adaptations that some novas can perform that can help mitigate the mental issues.

However, if there is a shadow clinic for helping people like you (that's not secretly run by Utopia), then I'm not aware of it. If you would like a more detailed answer, you can stop by Chicago and see me at the Knight's headquarters. I might be able to help you further, but I offer no promises.

Well, if all else fails, that Doctor could be me. Since the Quantum Fountain Incident, I have become more adept at handling psychological problems stemming from nova-baseline interactions as well as quantum-induced difficulties.

As for your Bluer=Meaner quandry; I can take a look. I'm an avid student of all things quantum and am willing to try and help.

Alright... I'll bite.

What the hell is a Knight's Headquarters? Let alone a Quantum Fountain...

As for stopping buy, I think I could make it. It'll take me some time to get there, I'm in New York but there are plenty of rides I can hitch to get down there, plenty of trucking routes. I walk, usually, so don't expect me there anytime soon...

I guess you're not up on the OpNet feeds from the US, then.

The Windy City Knights Headquarters is located in downtown Chicago. It's the central building for their municipal defenders team, of which I am a member. Most of the other members are regulars on this board.

I tend to forget that we've only been around for a year, and not everyone's heard of us. Essentially starring on a TV show - there's a combination action/reality show about us that's just starting its second season - means that just about everyone I meet knows who I am and what I do.

The Quantum Fountain was a novaphiile hang out in Boston. It was raided by a nova known as Charr. A few people died and many more were left with deep psycological scars. It wasn't pretty, especially since Boston is my hometown.

Alchemist good at his craft and the Knight's organization has top shelf resources to help you out. Let me know what you decide to do.

Who are you? And what do you do?

I am a member of the Windy City Knights. I'm not a doctor, but I am very good at determining chemical imbalances in complex systems. In other words, if this is a horomonal or treatable issue, I'll be able to find out.

If you need more than that, then you should probably do a bit of research on me. You obviously have an opnet connection. Use it.

I don't consider it a shadow clinic, but I am conducting a study he might want to join. I'm a Utopian doctor. Taint is one of the things we've been looking into. There are some drugs in the pipeline that IMHO hold some promise.

I would think it's more of something that is a side-effect of using our gifts. Perhaps as our body's way of adapting to our new gifts. After all, something as high-up as manipulating the quantum level of reality is bound to cause some physical manifestation.

I thank whatever higher power that I'm not a taint ridden monster, yet I wonder if being an aberrated wretch is only a showing of Nova evolution gone wrong?

What ever the hell this is, it's not friendly and I want it gone. I can hangdle blue skin, I can handle creepy eyes, hell even the voice I've been able to deal with, killed my dreams of operah though, heh.

Having people in yer head though is just not right, that's not "taint" that's insanity. But I'll be damned if I'm going to some Utotpia clinic where some baseline filth can poke me with needles, drill into head, probe places only that just weren't meant to see surgical steel.

Thinkin' of maybe takin Alchie up on his offer. Better to have Nova with an idea than a baseline with a degree anyday. In my opinion anyway.

I would think it's far more trustible to have a Nova examine any other Nova than having a Human do it. Simply put, we know more about ourselves than Humanity does.

Then again, Humankind does have their survival motives. How best to get intelligence on their enemy than getting one to come to them for a check-up, eh?

Guard your body.

Neil Preston: I couldn't agree with you more, Dr. Smith. Has Project Utopia changed its outlook toward taint and taint manifestations then?
Why should it?

Ignoring this paradigm has had many, many successes (which is a strong indication it shouldn’t be ignored); our successes can and will be mass produced.

Well put. And from your description of your issues, I think there is a strong possibility that you could benefit from taking part. PM me if you wish to.

Oh please. You are taking wildly exaggerated reports as truth, and then applying them out of context as well.

Our (meaning ‘my’) study is, for the most part, out-patient, and it is volunteer, and you can walk at any point for any reason.

We’d do a MRI on you and we have a nova who can scan quantum signatures, you’d give some blood, and before anything happened you’d have to read and sign forms which would spell out in painful detail exactly what would happen to you, what the risks are, what the expected results are, and what would happen. That’s science and the ethical pursuit of medicine.

BTW, the context of those wildly exaggerated reports is that novas can volunteer for procedures that would be fatal, or at least unethical, on baselines. This specifically includes myself. If you don’t like the idea of those procedures, then don’t volunteer.

Dr. Troll, I have heard strong theories that taint is part of the evolutionary process of novas and not a disease we are afflicted with. Everything I've heard out of Utopia til now refuses to treat it as anything but an affliction.
Neil, assume for the moment you are totally, completely right.

So what?

There are lots, and lots, of natural processes that mankind views as undesireable and tries to minimize, control, or eliminate. Regardless of what nature says on the matter, science gave us birth control, pain killers, vaccines, and organ transplants.

While I may not agree with certain particulars of Project Utopia, I can certainly agree with Dr. Troll's last post. Given my druthers, I most certainly wouldn't be covered in sand 24/7; if someone did manage to develop a drug that could suppress that problem with minimal or no side-effects, it would be a boon of life-changing proportions.

The "So what?" in this case, Dr. Smith, is that what if you end up doing long-term harm while looking for long-term results? I am saying that we don't know exactly why novas accumulate taint, why we aberrate the way we do, and why Aberrancy Syndrome exists.

If we go around saying, "well, we don't like this" and amputating it, could we not end up mangling ourselves because we don't like our voices cracking and acne associated with puberty?

I can say that in my experience, the more accepting a nova is of taint as a normal, if unfortunate, side effect of being a nova, the better they are able to deal with it. The more terrified they are of it, the more desperate and obsessive they become.

That's easy for you to say, Neil. You're not the one who has skin that varies from 40- to 800-grit.

I'm not "terrified" of my skin; I'm plagued by it. It damages my clothing and furniture. I leave sand behind me wherever I've been. It makes intimate relations impractical at best and impossible at worst.

Am I a bit tougher because of it? Yes. Would I give up that toughness to have non-abrasive skin? In a heartbeat. It's all well and good to look at the advantages that some of these aberrations may provide, but when it comes down to it, we have to live with these things permanently, not just when we might wind up in a hazardous situation.

Sandcaster, have you ever considered that you do not need clothing...or at least do not need clothing that is incompatable with your evolved skin? Have you considered that your furnishings should suit you, not the other way around? And as for "intimate relations", I would wager that you can - if you wish - find several of your peers in the One Race who not only would accept your unique tactile qualities, but would indeed enjoy them; you would be surprised at just how adaptative we can be in that regard.

The problems you list are not the result of your evolution; rather, they are the result of failing to accept and embrace your evolution by stepping away from the constraints of baseline socialization.

Spare me the transhumanist rhetoric, Timeslip. I'm not going to derail this thread with yet another debate on the topic of what we may or may not be; suffice to say that I'm very much a human being, and have no intent of claiming or acting otherwise. If you want to stake your claim as "the next inevitable evolutionary phase" or whatever, feel free, but don't expect me to join your merry little band of self-declared ubermenchen.

Neil Preston: The "So what?" in this case, Dr. Smith, is that what if you end up doing long-term harm while looking for long-term results?

That’s a concern and an issue. But it isn’t an excuse for not looking.

Neil Preston: I am saying that we don't know exactly why novas accumulate taint, why we aberrate the way we do, and why Aberrancy Syndrome exists.

That’s right, we don’t know exactly why. If we are going to control it we need to find out more. So… are you saying we shouldn’t be trying to figure things out? IMHO our current ignorance isn’t a reason to stay ignorant.

If we go around saying, "well, we don't like this" and amputating it, could we not end up mangling ourselves because we don't like our voices cracking and acne associated with puberty?

Are you suggesting it’s going to go away like acne or a cracking voice? It’s been my observation that it doesn’t, and it can get worse. Further, you are bringing forth highly speculative reasons for NOT going forward. I don’t see why these potentials should trump research into a known problem.

Neil, you are a healer. If you find someone with cancer, or Aids, do you tell them, “It’s natural” and leave them be? How about birth defects? Natural doesn’t mean desirable.

Neil Preston: I can say that in my experience, the more accepting a nova is of taint as a normal, if unfortunate, side effect of being a nova, the better they are able to deal with it. The more terrified they are of it, the more desperate and obsessive they become.

Mine too. It’s a great deal like dealing with dying patients, some accept it, some don’t. It’s better for them if they accept it because then they can deal with it.

But that’s them, my job is different. I’m supposed to change the status quo, not accept it. And that goal is no longer unthinkable.

Dr. Smith, calm down. By no means am I advocating not researching into a medical treatment for taint. Far from it. My oath is to heal all and bring harm to none, and I take that very seriously. I imagine you have a similar guiding compass.

What I am trying to address is the blanket medicate/surgery approach put forth by Project Utopia UP TIL NOW.

Is anyone at PU looking into quantum ways to effect/alter taint and taint manifestations?

Is anyone at PU looking into ways to make novas better able to resist taint accumulation?

Is anyone at PU looking into ways to streamline the cerebral-node interface? After all, advanced node size is considered a major source of taint and taint related psychosis.

Well, you work with what you have. And yes I know, it's a poor artist that blames his tools, but still.

Quote:
Neil Preston: Is anyone at PU looking into...
The general answer to that is yes, we are. We are looking into many ways, with many approaches. And we publish. wink

Very good. That's the focus of my research. It's looking... promising. And I'll hold off making promises until I have some math to back them up, even the Mega-Smart can fool themselves.

My two cents:

I've been lucky so far. No involuntary glowing hair or new limbs for me as of yet. But I know a fair number of novas who have seen significant changes. I'm mated to one of them.

Some of these changes are wonderful. Some are awful. And most are somewhere in-between. I see a fair number of people in this thread willing to throw out the baby with the bathwater - in both directions.

Like so many things in life, the changes that we see in ourselves as novas seem to be a broad spectrum of grey. It would be good to keep this in mind as we deal with them.

There is an old story/proverb or what have you.

A group of people gather complaining about thier problems. They all form a circle and put thier problems in the middle and everybody is allowed to pick any problem they want to take as there own, but after seeing everybody else's problems, everybody selects thier previous problem. Why? Because after seeing other people's problems, there own doesn't seem that bad...

All this over getting my percocet dosage upped or a Nova doc to take a look at my head... you guys need more constructive hobbies.

I hear macrame is nice.

Noir does raise an interesting point, I'm sure some of you have it worse off than me, but I don't give two iotas about any of ya, just me and my head.

Been watching ya gab for days in here, and for what? All this you guys have babbled about today will be rehashed later in a month or so in another thread by someone else. That thread will end the same way, everyone talkin, nobody being right, and nothing changing.

And we're supposed to be smarter than humanity. Heh.

Just because maybe you missed it, the Utopian doctor said there was a study going on and you could join. He said it looked like you and your little problem could get something out of it. That sounds concrete in the here and now to me.

Sure. Your call. Course that means this is all going to get rehashed in a month because you're not actually doing anything.

Yeah. Smarter than humanity for sure.

You asked for a good doctor. Well, now you got two. Were you planning on doing something about that?
