Dozer sighed, "Thanks. It's been less than stellar. But i didn't come here to bring everyone down. What's this game that everyone's playing? "I'm Revenant," the man said softly. The pairs could tell that socializing wasn't his thing, but he was making a solid effort nonetheless. "It's nice meeting you. Um, if you like we could play something. I only have my acoustic with me and all I do is play. My singing voice is horrendous."

Boyfriend. Shoulda guessed. He thought silently to himself. It didn't bother him much, he and women didn't get on very well anyways. Still, at least she was easy to look at.

Out of your league too numb nuts. Came the raspy whisper of his darker half up into the surface of his thoughts. You should have seen it coming. She's beautiful. You're a desensitized, sociopathic dip shit. Must I always do the math for you?

It took all Revenant's strength to not accidentally roll his eyes right there in front of Jael and Alex. So glad you decided to wake up...

What did I miss? His evil side inquired and Warren could feel the presence using his eyes to assess his surroundings. Dear, god.... what a shit hole.

Just you fucking right off. S'cuse me while I ignore you for a while. Said silently, concealing a grin from his hostess and her most current penis-bearing distraction.

Dick. Warren could almost feel the entity sulk.

Jael grinned, her gaze moving from Revenant to Sunshine. “You boys up to playing something?” Her gaze passed around the room, seeking somewhere for them to set up. “Sunshine, if you want, you could get your guitar… we could have some music. Only if you want.” Jael smiled at her boyfriend before turning that smile on Revenant. “And you too. Don’t let me twist your arm into anything you don’t want to do. This is a party, have fun.”

“I… uh, Jay? Lookit,” Shelly said, leaning closer to Jael and pointing at something behind Revenant.

The blonde nova looked; whatever it was sent her eyebrows rising. “Holy shit,” she whispered, “I think my party just got crashed by a porn star.” More than just their group were turning to stare, as awareness of the woman rippled across the room. It was like when Bombshell and Knockout entered only they had their mostly-sterling reputations. This woman was considered to be a true Jezebel.

“Are you going to talk to her?” Shelly hissed.

Jael muttered, “I think I should, but all I wanna say are ‘nice shoes, wanna fuck?’” She glanced at Sunshine. “Sorry.”

“Understandable,” her boyfriend said, choosing his words with care.

“Need me to go with? I’ll do it, even thought she’ll make me look like a hag by comparison,” Shelly offered, like a true BFF.

“Deal. Keep me from saying something stupid, ok?” Jael asked.

“As much as I ever can,” Shelly said with a grin.

“Be right back,” Jael told the two men. “Maybe with a porn star.”

Jason's glorious eyes dimmed with melancholy, her friendly smile growing sad. "That seems to be the case with too many the last few months," Jason agreed, her own time in the Congo coming back to her, along with Jael's trial, which affected her greatly as well. As Dozer sat down, Jason settled back down facing the game. It may have been trite playing a video game with a basis on real-world tragedy and devastation, but it was far more comfortable for not being actually real.

"This is Call of Duty: Elites, a blend between a traditional Fighting game and a first- or third-person shooter," Jason explained, her melodious voice making it sound like this most interesting thing since bacon, as the match started. "Right now, we're playing a team match, me and Mixie here, against the boys, who are currently getting their asses handed to them in Kashmir..."

The pixelated Totentanz once more demonstrated his name, a dance of death in Bombshell's hands, his attacks quick and surprising, slaughtering his enemies of driving them into Mixie's more than competent hands by turns. Jason continued her explanation all the while, with Sean's and Ryusei's not-quite-willing cooperation. The technical powers of Ausrine and Pursuer failing in the face of Totentanz's sheer speed and stealth. Sean in particular couldn't figure out why Jason was taking a special interest in his character, Totentanz's spears perforating Ausrine in seeming delight.

The match over with a decisive win for the girls - and feeling a little mollified having won this time - Jason flicked her controller over her shoulder, which landed neatly in Dozer's hands. "Here, you take a turn, Doz. Run 'im through one of the scenarios guys, so he can get the hang of it. I'm gettin' a drink and something to eat." With entrancing grace, Bombshell flowed to her feet, long sliver hair rippling like a waterfall under the light. "Anyone want anything?"

After getting their requests, Jason glided out of the room, only pausing for an instant to bend over and murmur something in Sean's ear, though whether he heard anything considering the view he got down her tank-top was another manner. "Dude, take it from a guy who hears far too much girl-talk and reads more than enough scripts: Contessa has the hots for you. Even I can see it."

Jason left the games room before the redhead could respond with all her innate, ineffable grace, alluring and powerful. She strode up behind Danielle, giving her girl-friend a quick squeeze on the bum, making her start with a squeek.

"I'm grabbing a few drinks, can I get you anything, hon?" Jason asked.

"Huh? Whuh? Oh, yeah, sure, I'll... have... harem..." Danielle stammered incomprehensibly.

Following Danielle's eyes to the buffet table, Jason felt her guts tighten in surprise - and somewhere lower tighten with something else. Jason might have been more than good at acting sexy, but that woman was sexy, even just standing there picking over the buffet table. Must be the difference between eruptin' into a girl and bein' born one.

Sword of the Areola had been the first porno she had ever seen - or at least the first one she had seen the whole way through - she wasn't even a fourteen year old boy yet. More recently, she had watched a fair portion of Seven Veils and Harem Fantasies III before she and Danielle had become more distracted physically than visually.

Caramel Bath... Jason sighed in her thoughts, oblivious to the pair of points poking through her shirt. She was in a committed relationship with Danielle, and was eternally grateful for it, but damn! Both them had agreed that simply looking was okay. I'm so glad we've never had a scene together in anything - I'm not sure I'd be able to keep it to just acting... With what I've seen, she has no trouble with girl-on-girl...

"Let's go say hi, at least, Dani," Jason whispered. "Not every day you get to meet the sexiest pornstar in the world."

Danielle could only shake her head, and Jason could feel the heat of her blush. Danielle was sure if she met Caramel Bath, disaster would invariably strike. Her shirt would catch on fire, she'd spill her drink of over her, say something that would lead to terminal embarrassment, something. Jason was made of easy-going and affable charm, but she was just a klutz.

Jason sighed fondly, having an inkling of what was going through her girlfriend's head. C'mon Dani, you're so sweet and kind-hearted, don't you realize everyone can see it? "Stay here if you like, Dani, but don't run away if I bring her back to say hello."

With that threat, Jason sashayed up to the bar, making her orders, then casually glided up to the buffet line, raising the pulchritude standing together to near critical mass. After two years in show business, Jason didn't really suffer fanboy (or fangirl) attacks anymore - certainly not like the first time she met Ausrine - but it was close.

Jason leaned forward slightly, deftly plucking up a bag of Crunchy Cheetos - she loved them and didn't have to worry about orange-finger anymore - then glanced over and gave Kara an appreciative grin without being crass or crude about it, and a small nod in greeting.

Kara couldn't quite decide if it was a heterosexual man in a woman's body or a lesbian she was talking to. Bombshell moved like a woman, sounded like a woman, and no amount of surgery and hormones could make her look more like a woman, but there was a glint in her incandescent indigo gaze Kara associated with men more than women.

"Hey. I've gotta say, other than Divis Mal or Geryon, you're about the last nova I expected to see here." Jason's grin turned wry and she gave a small nod in the approaching Jael's direction. "Unless the host has hidin' the fun stuff in her past from me and Alex."

Jason stuck out a hand, only the most perceptive realizing she had started holding out the hand holding the bag of Cheetos before switching. And though by now, Bombshell was a name known around the world, her introduction was honest, even quaint. "Hi, I'm Jason Bellefleur. I've been a fan since I could officially call myself a teenaged boy," Her eyes widened at her slip, then she shrugged with a self-deprecating grin. "I stand by that."

"Wait." Revenant said to Sunshine as they watched Jael and her BFF head over to the distracting Caramel Bath. "Your girlfriend is going over there to talk to Kara 'Caramel Bath' B'Nath... and you're staying here? And she might be bringing her back over? To introduce her to you? That's living the dream and then some."

"Stick around and she'll introduce her to you too." Alex said with a grin, following Jael's progress across the room for a long moment before fixing his summer-sky-blues on the object of pretty much everyone's attention. After a few months together and many frank and fun exchanges, he was aware that Jael's bisexuality had a 'must be this hot to ride' sign on the front door, and that the infamous nova porn star definitely hit all the right buttons. He was also aware that Jael loved him. Whether it was self-confidence or angelic trust, he felt not at all threatened by the exotic beauty she was going to greet. He did feel aroused, though. "If I hadn't gone to high school, I might not even know who she is. That's kind of funny." he mused. Revenant glanced at him out of the corner of one eye, the other yellow orb focusing on the dusky woman in the center of the room.

"Yeah. Yeah I guess she might."

"If you hold out here for a minute, I'll be right back with my own acoustic." Alex told him, still not taking his eyes off the sight of Jael talking to Kara as he stepped away. He manouvered from the room without colliding with anyone and emerged onto the balcony, waving to a couple of guests before dropping over the edge and floating down to his and Jael's room and alighting on the balcony. Grabbing his guitar case, the golden young man flitted back out of the room and soared back upstairs.

Kara was making her second circuit of the buffet table, wondering which man would approach her. It wasn’t going to be a woman; they’d be far more subtle, perhaps coming over to cruise the table casually before approaching her. Well, it might be the hostess of the party; she had a reputation for forwardness.

But Kara’s gut reaction was right. It was a boy, just one with boobs. A sexy man with boobs, which was the best and rarest kind of boobed man. “Hello, Jason,” she purred, taking the hand offered to her. Her fingers caressed the other woman’s smooth skin as she shook and released, a subtle invitation. Of course, everything about Kara was an invitation. “I’ve become quite a fan of yours, as well, sugar. Valkyrie is our favorite television show – it always gets recorded.”

She grinned at the other woman, turning on her charm with ease. “As for not coming… well, I’ll only say I’ve been following the news about these two for a while so I thought a show of support might be warranted. Plus I have to admit that the guest list intrigued me as well.” Kara casually flipped her hair back over her shoulder, somehow making the simple movement seem like the sexiest thing she’d ever done.

Morri might have become enthralled by Kara like so many other people in the room, but she had found something else that had drawn her eyes. One of the younger couples here had brought their six-month-old baby and Morri had found it. Her red eyes widened as the adorable little boy looked up at her from his stroller.

The feral nova dropped to her knees, her face becoming excited. Even with her sinister red eyes, there could be no doubt that the young nova was happy to see the baby. The child stared at her with much less enthusiasm, his chubby face uneasy before this really strange stranger. “Baby,” she said to his parents, smiling widely.

“His name is Jacob,” the mother ventured after a nervous swallow.

“What’s your name?” the father asked, moving a little closer to his child.

That broke the baby’s spell over Morri and she edged away from the stroller, her eyes turning wary as she stared at the man. “Morri,” she said softly, looking uneasy.

Pleased that the nova had backed down, the man took another step forward, trying to push her away from the baby physically. His efforts were rewarded with a growl of warning, and he took that step back and then another. With a rush of concern, he understood that she wouldn’t hurt the boy, but he was another matter.

His wife gasped at the noise and pulled the stroller back, her expression afraid. “Leave us alone,” she hissed, pulling back further. Red eyes stared up at her for a moment; then Morri was gone in a burst of speed that carried her into the game room. Eyen had said there were good people here. Her chest hurt for some reason as Morri sought those good people.

“What the fuck?” Sean asked no one in particular when Jason had gone. Her absence, which was sad to him, was also welcome, if only because every woman in the room had developed a sudden hatred for him. He eyed the others left in the room; Mixie shrugged and got to her feet.

“I’m gonna get some food,” she said and left, leaving Sean with a bunch of guys. Granted, some of them were hot guys but he still felt like he was driving all the girls away.

“So… we don’t have enough for team play,” Sean said, “so let’s just do PvP.”

They ran though a game, with Ryusei’s better dexterity providing him with the edge. He won handily, though not embarrassingly so to Sean. Dozer was third, but as a newbie, that was to be expected. Sean glanced around, hoping to see someone else to join for team-play. The only other person in the room was that red-eyed girl, the pretty, quiet one with Einherjar.

“Hi, there,” the red-head said, giving her a friendly smile. “I’m Sean. This is Dozer and Ryusei.”

She stared at them for a long moment. Sean wasn’t sure she was going to say anything when she suddenly announced, “Morri.”

“Hi, Morri,” Sean said, offering the controller Mixie had just abandoned. “Wanna play?” There was a flicker of uncertainty across her features and Sean wondered where she’d come from that such a simple question could cause that kind of reaction. “I can teach you, if you need.” Her stare was still uncomprehending.

“Alllllright. Look, I’m going to make the girl on the screen kick by pushing this button, see?” Ausrine executed a high kick.

“Ow Shree Nah.” Morri pointed at the character, her eyes lighting up with pleasure.

“Yeah, I like her too,” Sean said with a grin. He remembered to leave off why this time. He couldn’t take two innocents pulling the same prank on him in one night. “So you wanna try?” She shook her head after a moment. “Well, ok. You don’t have to. Just wanted to hang out with the cool kids?” he asked with a grin.

“Eyen say you not call Morri retard,” the girl said solemnly.

That wiped the grin off Sean’s face. “No, I’d never say that,” he said fiercely. At the wary look that entered her eyes at his tone, he forced himself to calm down and said, “You can just watch, if you want. But really, it’s more fun to play.” When she sat down in the corner, he turned back to the screen, trying to not be angry about how this whole fucking party had gone.

Bombshell had never been accused of being a genius, but she had a stubborn will, an agile wit, and a facile charm, so she didn't end up visibly drooling from Kara's silky touch or the sultry flip of her hair. A subconscious part of her mind memorized the movement - whenever she did something similar, it always looked affected - if no less sexy - not casual. With her long silver hair, it would look amazing. She knew she was well represented on silverheads.op - poor Teardrop just couldn't compete - and she had gotten more than one letter from fans fantasizing about her argent mane. I can't believe I just thought about that.

Jason woke up to seeing her own ineffable image in the mirror and as often as not, with the nearly as stunning Danielle in bed next to her, so she liked to think she wasn't a fool for a pretty face (beyond her own), if no less appreciative of them. There were few indeed her equal. Hell, even acting out an intimate relationship with Lydia Divine hadn't been overwhelming, though it probably helped that in private, she found Lydia sort of a bitch and still not a much for Danielle in the hotness department.

Kara's innate and devastating sensual appeal was like a ten-ton bludgeon to the head. Jason couldn't refrain from taking a deep breath, her nipples achingly hard, but was glad she didn't blush when she saw Kara's amused grin upon noticing her reaction. Jason gave her a shrug, as if to say, 'What else can I do about it?'

This is what it's like for other people when I'm in a room... Whew! Is she really hitting on to me, or is this just her being... well, her? Bombshell wasn't a stranger to being hit on, male or female, despite being known to be in a committed relationship. But she had never been hit on by someone as ravishing as Caramel Bath either. She might have been a porn-star, but she had class - she wasn't like some of the other porn-stars, which Jason imagined would make her feel sticky just being in the same room with them.

"I'm always glad to hear someone likes the show. Being such fans of the show, if you want to come down on set some time, I can arrange it," Jason offered, giving herself a little time to get herself under control. "Since having Einherjar, Kat, and Jael on the show, the producers have been chomping on the bit to get other Novas for guest-spots and cameos..." I really, really shouldn't have said that...

Jason followed Kara glance towards Jael and Alex, and smiled sadly. "They're good people and don't deserve the shit being thrown at them," Jason said, overlooking the fact that some of that shit was being thrown her way as well. "They'll appreciate your support, I'm sure." Jason arched a wry brow at the unrepentant porn-star, though Kara caught a glint of warning in her indigo eyes. "Do go easy on Alex, eh? Despite everything he's been through, he's still a teenager and Jael has... boundary issues." After a moment, Jason nodded at Danielle, her grin widening in fondness. "Go easy on Danielle too - she suffers from Socially Induced Klutziness. Endearing to me, but terminally embarrassing to her."

Ryusei frowned. He wasn't particularly accustomed to losing, though he was of the opinion Totes was broken as hell. Still he'd simply been outplayed. He did well in straight PvP where nobody was Totes, and smiled to Mori. "NO one should be calling you that."

Her reaction to him wasn't what he was used to and he decided to drop the issue. They set up another round, went head to head again, once again winning, but not by a huge margin.

He smiled. "I'll take breaking even for now. I'm going to go see what Katya's up to." With that he set the control down, and headed out into the main room looking for Katya. It was hard to miss Jason, but it was impossible to miss whoever he was talking too. The woman was someone he didn't recognize, and who he had to admit decidedly stirred arrousal within him. Still, he did his best to steel himself and slide into the traditional manner that had served him well over the years.

He made his way over, knowing Katya would have felt that, and likely come to see just what could pique his arousal and curiosity at the same time.

He waited for Jason and the unknown nova to finish speaking before introducing himself. "I didn't know we'd have another breathtaking woman show up to this party. It's kinda like Cleveland all over again."

it saddened him that only Dozer and Jael would get that reference though, so many having dropped out of contact over the years.

Kara’s eyes widened with a mix of surprise and interest at Jason’s talk of visiting Valkyrie. Her gaze became speculative when the word ‘cameo’ arose and she looked even more interested. However, she didn’t push it; that wasn’t her goal here today. “Jack and I would love to visit,” she said instead, beaming at the beautiful Jason. “He’s no stranger to film sets and I know he’d like to see one of his favorite shows being filmed.”

“He watches your filming?” Jason said, a little surprised by this revelation.

“Jack and I have understandings,” Kara said, picking up a strawberry and taking a bite of the sweet, red fruit. “You have to, in my business. Part of that understanding is that I will be having sex with other people. As a result, he has sex with other people as well – not on camera, but we do have an open relationship in which we have rules and boundaries. It works for us.”

“Wow,” Jason said, looking a bit unsure. “I’m not sure I could do that.”

Kara grinned, sparking unclean and fun thoughts in everyone watching. “Don’t worry about it,” she said easily. “It’s not the kind of thing for everyone. But it’s what kept Jack and I together for more than eight years.” She put her hand on Bombshell’s arm, her fingers coiling around her forearm. “If you’re happy, that’s what matters.”

“Kara,” the breathtaking woman said with a smile. She offered him a hand, her dark skin smooth against his. “And you are?”

“Ryusei,” he told her, shaking.

“It’s a pleasure,” Kara replied with a smile, one that sent thoughts spinning down below the belt.

“I agree,” Ryusei answered, holding her hand for a beat longer than necessary; she had that effect on men.

“So would you like to introduce me to more of your friends?” Kara threw a significant glance behind the argent-haired Bombshell. Bombshell looked over her shoulder. Jael and her friend Shelly hovered, clearly not wanting to interrupt their conversation but just as clearly wanting an introduction.

"Oh, of course, my bad," Jason readily agreed. She had thought Jael was coming over, but it seemed like she was waiting for Jason to lead Kara to her... which was a gift she wasn't sure she needed. Kara had simply placed a hand on her arm in understanding, but the casual touch felt like electricity, sparking rather vivid thoughts she should have been ashamed to have while in an otherwise happy and committed relationship... but she wasn't.

Jason lead Kara to Jael and Shelly, Ryusei following along as if Kara held his leash and was bemused by the fact. She was unaware that her grin was wider than she intended, as if she had something to do with the famous porn-star attending Jael's party.

"Hey, Jael, Shelly, look who decided to come to the party - Kara B'nath, and if you guys knew about this, I'm gonna want an good explanation for why you never mentioned it before," Jason chimed in her melodious soprano. "Kara, this is our host, Jael and her good friend Shelly." Reluctantly, she slid her arm out from under Kara's innately sensual touch. "If you girls - and you, Ryusei - will excuse, there's still someone I want to round up for an introduction, if you don't mind, Kara. I'll be right back."

As Jason sashayed away to round up Danielle, her round hips perhaps or perhaps not swinging with extra vigorousness, Katya was lured in by the emotions emanating from her boyfriend through their psychic link. Amused more than offended, she slipped an arm through Ryusei's and gave the appealing woman a casual look-over. She had peeked at Jason's porn folder on his PC when there were together, she knew who the woman was, and had seen her in action, as it were.

As beautiful as Jason, and knowing how to work it even better... Phew! I've never been so interested in girls until I erupted... "I'm Katya Skovskaya, Ryusei's girlfriend," the ravishing young woman said by way of greeting, offering a grin and a hand - she could hardly pass up a chance to touch this woman. She glanced up at Ryusei, arching a sable brow in playful inquiry. "Find someone for your List, Ryu?"

Ryusei smiled as Katya slid in beside him, nodding approvingly, his mood always lightened with her nearby. Her question made him chuckle. "Perhaps."

He seldom thought about the list, it wasn't that there weren't women he was sexually attracted to beyond Katya, three of them were here. He just had yet to meet someone who made him ache to ravish them enough to actually consider making good on his own list.

Kara aroused him yes, but not so much as to knock any of the others from the list.

"Find someone for yours?"

  • 2 weeks later...

As she waited for Bombshell to deliver, Kara smiled at the people around her, her expression unchanging as she realized she was going to get swarmed soon. It was a issue she's long come to terms with personally, but she had to admit that it was inconvenient at times. Like when she needed to casually get a few minutes alone with her target. Speaking of... Kara glanced across the room, just as blue eyes found her. She gave him a slow, lazy smile, the kind that men love to see directed at them. Well, he knew she was here, and unless she'd completely misjudged him, he'd come looking for her in time.

She turned back to Jason as she brought Jael and Shelly over. "I just wanted to say thank you for this lovely party, Jael," Kara said smoothly when the introductions were done. She offered a hand.

Jael took it, looking slightly shell-shocked. "Can I lick you?" she asked.

Shelly clapped a hand over the blonde's mouth. "I'm going to translate. That means, 'you're so kind, thank you.'" The pretty brunette baseline rolled her eyes. "She can get like this, sorry."

"It's alright," Kara laughed. While these moments weren't always pleasant, they were part of her life, so she dealt with them. "It's not the most offensive greeting I've ever had."

"Still, on behalf of Jael's friends everywhere, I apologize," Shelly replied. "She'd like you to come over and meet her boyfriend, which isn't as weird as it sounds when you look at it like Jael just sharing things she likes with her boyfriend."

"Oh, I'm something you like?" Kara asked Jael.

Jael nodded emphatically as Shelly said, "She has seen several of your movies. Shall we?"

"Lead on," Kara said with a smile.

Katya offered her name and her hand at that moment and Kara took it, shaking. "It's good to meet both of you," she said, wondering why they were talking about their Cheat Lists in front of who they were going to potentially cheat with. It was a little forward, even for the people she normally hung with.

Mesa, Arizona was a rather different city to Vancouver.

Vancouver still lived in mourning, trying to recover from the pain of the Victoria Crush. Its nights sounded like the afterparty of a funeral - everyone laughing and smiling to take the edge of the pain they felt. Mesa had suffered no such blow. The night smelled the same; of sweat and drink and food, but it sounded like an ecstasy.

Chang Zha-Yang had been wandering Mesa for hours, even though she had come here to answer an invitation from Sunshine, to attend Jael Carver's fourth of July celebration. It felt odd to her, and no mistake. She would have preferred to receive the invitation from Jael, rather than from - to follow the news - Jael's fuck puppet. She knew the offer had been made off the cuff, because Sunshine had that sort of personality. He liked her. Chang appreciated that.

It stood to reason that Jael had simply gone along with it. She probably allowed Sunshine almost anything. Love seemed to work that way.

She walked in human form now, heavily tattooed, arms and back bare, long legs covered in laddered tights that led up to an impossible halter top that seemed painted on. Chang had spent some time with her limbs stretched and coiled around the many limbs of a tree like some great mass of serpents, and a little more as a park bench. That had been interesting. A drunk couple had sat on her, and ended up having sex on her, too. Halfway through she had considered transforming into a bed to make their experience more comfortable, but they would not have appreciated the gesture so she let them go about their awkward, bruising business.

Those sensations dwelt in her, though. The feeling of the girl's one bared breast pressed into her wooden seat, the man's folded knee in the small gap between seat and back, the look on the woman's face as she orgasmed... they were warm, somehow.

Chang knew longing when she felt it. Until she had a chance to satisfy that, though, she would enjoy what little came her way.

Fireworks criss-crossed the night sky to the south, lighting it up in bursts of red and green and orange fire. Chang had spent an hour watching from afar, her perceptions enhanced to their utmost and her eyes tightened to study them better. There was a raw, brutal beauty to fireworks. Pretty explosions, every one.

The humans of America called this independence day. They celebrated their independence from England, their former masters. She had always thought that it made sense for the Teragen to have their own version. After all, wasn't the whole point of Teras to help refine and expand their own sense of independence?

But then, Teras had many points. It was, in fact, a most pointy philosophy. Which points were sharp, though, and which blunt? Over time, seeing what had happened to Scrambler, to others she had associated with, it seemed that independence was anything but assured.

Sometimes Chang felt like such a fool.

Her time in the Congo had been informative. Now there was blood on her hands. On her breasts, technically speaking, but few people were keen to quibble on matters of murder. Though details did seem to make a difference. Killing a man with a sword never seemed as shocking as doing it with one's bare hands, and killing him with a gun had far less impact than doing it with an industrial press or crusher. She supposed that 'death by spiky nipples' might qualify as shocking, though morally Chang figured it had to be equivalent to using a sword.

She paused on her way down the street, her attention caught by the yowling of a pair of foxes mating in the underbrush. Sex everywhere, and none spare for her. That seemed rather churlish of the world, really. One day she would have another girlfriend, surely. Chang resolved to make up for lost time when she found the right woman.

Unbidden, Chang's mind filled with images of blood and death, of shell-torn mud, mortar craters and battle cries, the rattle of gunfire. Sex and death. Two sides of the same coin according to some philosophers.

War had never been a 'real' idea to Chang. She read about it, watched it from afar, but had never before been thrust into the middle. She was lucky to be alive.

Perhaps that had not sunk in yet.

Chang came to the Phoenix Marriot hotel for the fourth time that night, and decided that now she would enter. Nothing had changed from the last three times, save a realization that this had been ostensibly why she hitch-hiked across America for four days to get here on time. If she did not go in now, she never would.

The people who had driven her had all recognized her. Perhaps those who drove by did, too, and just had no interest in stopping for a Nova. She had tried to engage in small talk with them, or at least had answered when they talked to her. It always died off after half an hour at most, and the rest of the journey would go on in silence.

Oddly, she had spent most of the time meditating on engines. Listening to the devices thrumming underneath her, to the rolling of pieces and pushing of pistons, and all the many clicks and cracks of gear shifts and so on. Nova she might be, but a car would outrun her any day.

By the second day she had been thinking inward, even more than usual. She had slipped into full meditation after only a few minutes of smalltalk and a polite request for quiet. The journeys had been filled with thinking about her node, about the pattern of quantum that flooded through her, about how she might coax it to grow to deal with this difficiency.

Hitch-hiking had been pleasant enough, though.

Chang walked right up to the sliding doors of the Phoenix Merriot, and paused on the threshold. For the fourth time that evening, the question occurred: Do I belong here?

Things had been a little different once she got to Mesa. She had shared a word or two with those baselines who recognized her, most of whom were wandering from one celebration to the next. They did not loiter long, though. The joy of the evening over-rode whatever discomfort her presence and changes inspired in them, but it likewise kept them moving along. Maybe they sensed her mood.

Joy did not come easily to Chang. It never had. Even as a child she had been quiet and serious, and had been in turns mocked and praised for it. Other people could smile and laugh and dance, but their joy had none of that infamous 'infectious' quality she heard of often and felt never.

She was not sad, not even somber, but she felt inappropriate. She knew many people would find that hilarious. Could a hermaphrodite ever be 'appropriate' in the society they had? Especially one whose endowment could be accused of being a deadly weapon as in her case. Every part of her screamed her nature, nobody could look at her and not see a Nova walking among them. In her own way, Chang was as blatant as Leviathan or Geryon.

The third time she had come to this hotel she had been close enough to pick out individual conversations. All the ones she had heard had the feel of talks she would only put a damper on. Did that not put a moral imperitive on her not to impose herself on the gathering? A consequential sort of morality, to be sure, but consequentialism seemed an apt moral basis for any Nova. Even a Terat.

Realizing that she had grown lonely had been an important step in her growth. All of her meditations on the subject, however, had just emphasized what she knew already: Chang Zha-Yang was an awkward person.

She did not think it made her a bad one as such. Just awkward to interact with, or at the least of a temperament that only appealed to a few.

The Sunshines and Bombshells of the world would never be lacking friends. They were easy to like, open, almost loving. She doubted anyone would describe her with the same words.

People were drawn to her, too, of course. She did not know quite why. Chang knew her quantum signature drew people in, similar to any other hyper-charismatic Nova. But she imagined people's experience of that around her would be different to more 'open' Novas.

Sometimes she wished she were an empath or telepath, to better understand how others felt. Those times passed fast, though. She was who she was, mostly for the better. And the only way she could learn how people felt about her was to be among them, and not to worry about the consequences.

Chang walked into the hotel lobby, announced herself at the check-in desk and made her way to the elevator.

She surged her body with quantum and squeezed herself flat to slide into the elevator shaft through the tiny gap in the elevator.

Within she expanded herself into a flat plane along the inside of the doors, then stretched herself up the elevator shaft to the appropriate floor. The elevator came down as she was going up, and she flattened herself out again to let it pass.

Like rubber she contracted, and squeezed anew, sliding through one more set of doors and positively bouncing back into her chosen human shape. The party seemed full and busy. Every baseline that clapped eyes on her did the usual double take. Face. Breasts. Cock. Breasts. Face. Usually a blink or two on top. She ignored them. Chang listened for the sound of her host's voice, and went to seek her out.

It would be unseemly not to formally present herself, after all.

Sauntering off to round up Danielle, Jason stifled an amused giggle-snort hearing Jael's first words to Kara. Jael hadn't been much better when they had first met in a casual setting - the Crush had put a damper on everybody - but with their mutual connection with Sunshine, and both of them having significant others, she had quickly eased into seeing Jason as a good friend rather than a bedmate. Mostly. It was impossible not to be attracted to Bombshell, at least a little, and usually a lot more than a little.

Jason found her girlfriend hiding in the games room and glided up behind her, draping her hands over her shoulders and down her front, Jael's comment prompting her to give Danielle's ear a teasing lick, making her start. "C'mon, Dani, say hi at least," Jason urged with a grin and a pair of playful hands. "Kara doesn't bite... unless we ask." She caught Danielle's blush and giggled softly, but gave her a serious look. "And no, we're not going to ask."

I might not have any intention of askin,' but it can't stop me from picturing it, Jason mused and glancing at Danielle, her face still red as she stood up, she thought she might be thinking the same thing. They might have changed gender, but their threesome fantasies still involved them with another woman, it was just both of them were women too.

"Let's go say hi to the adult video star," Danielle agreed. She might have a little self-conscious about meeting Caramel Bath - there had been a time, just after she erupted, when she feared all she'd be able to do was porn - but had to admit she was a bit intrigued too. "I wonder if she's considering a sequal to Sword of the Areola?"

She would if we agreed to appear in it... Stop thinking nasty thoughts, Jace! "That's the spirit, Dani! She told me Valkyrie is her favourite show, so who knows, eh?"

Leading Danielle back into the main room with a hand around her waist, Jason was about to head towards Kara and Jael when she passed near the entrance and noticed the new - and every bit as eccentrically unique looking as ever - arrival, and changed directions.

"Hey, Chang, I wasn't expectin' you to show up here, but it's a pleasant surprise," Jason said, a sensual brow arched in surprise, but her welcoming smile was genuine. If she found the woman odd and didn't totally agree with her philosophy, she had always found her direct and honest and she hadn't seemed forceful on pushing that philosophy on Alex. "You should get out more. I know Sunshine will want to say hi - he's around somewhere - and If you want say to hi to the host, Jael is right over there, drooling over another unexpected guest."

Chang had been well aware of Jason's presence, even before the silver-haired goddess had entered the room with a golden-haired woman at her side, nearly as beautiful as her and looking enough like her to be sister, nearly a twin, though several inches shorter. Still, as Jason approached her, her ultra-keen senses took heady note.

Bombshell's fluid grace was as mesmerizing as ever, seeming to almost glide above the ground, innately sensual without being exaggerated and crass. Her long cascade of silver hair shimmered under the light and her distinctively leggy and voluptuous figure was every bit as devastating as Chang remembered. And yet, Jason wasn't exactly the same, her time in the Congo had marked her, for those that could see. There was a hint of greater self-possession about her; Chang noticed Jason's luminous indigo eyes met hers without the usual double take, with no sign of strain or disquiet when a casual glance took in her doubled cleavage or her massive manhood.

Even more intriguing to Chang was the new quality she noticed in Jason's incredible voice, one she doubted few others without her experience and quantum-enhanced sensitivity would detect. Under her impossibly melodious and velvety soprano, her rich tones held a subtle, multi-tonal rippling timbre that granted her voice an even greater depth and breadth. Baselines would be unlikely to be aware of it, to their loss.

The party felt somehow constricting. Not the pedestrian constriction of iron shackles, but the invisible crushing weight of social pressure, of dozens united in distaste, silently trying to enforce their will.

Chang sometimes wished she were psychic, on the pure paranoid level of wanting to check and see if her feelings rang true. She disliked the idea that fear or hate motivated her thoughts, but one or the other had to be responsible. How many times had she told herself that those feelings had to be left behind for her evolution?

She supposed there was a good reason why she had yet to reach the distant pinnacle of chrysalis. Her feelings now were proof of it. All these years had passed, yet simple animal responses still controlled her with no less cruelty than a torturer, nor less malice than a grave enemy.

Her thoughts turned unbidden to Scrambler. To the door of her studio crumbling under his new protégé’s assault, to him looking around with disgust. He would be back. She had no doubt her sojourn in the Congo had not been in his plans, and Scrambler had never taken well to being thwarted.

Chang saw Bombshell and Knockout enter the room. Her shaft stiffened, pushing hard against her breasts. Her lip quirked in a half-smile, considering it and the pleasures it promised, or perhaps threatened.

Perhaps she had done her own feelings a disservice by labelling them animalistic. Or perhaps, rather, she had misunderstood their importance in the future she had been crawling toward all this time. Every time she felt herself reach a conclusion, an absolute truth, something in her cracked and contradicted.

"Hey, Chang,” Jason said as she approached, as genuine as ever, more flawless than a dream given flesh. “I wasn't expectin' you to show up here, but it's a pleasant surprise. You should get out more. I know Sunshine will want to say hi - he's around somewhere - and If you want say to hi to the host, Jael is right over there, drooling over another unexpected guest."

Chang saw Jael then, and nodded. She did not recognize many of the Novas at the party, but that did not surprise her. She had never been that well connected even in the Teragen. Under the crude speech around her, Chang detected a shift in Jason’s voice, a new complexity to her tone. Not the usual subtle promise of sexual favours that would not be granted, but rather a glimpse of sounds unmade, of songs unsung.

“Your voice has changed,” Chang said, arranging her vocal chords in such a way that her voice came out as an odd, self-echoing sound. She spoke each word four times, so close together they blurred into one sound, an elongation that conjured up thoughts of old mystics in the mountains and oracles of old. “That is interesting. I look forward to hearing your recording of ‘Angel of Harmony and Despair’, you may be able to nail it now. I admit that I wrote it to challenge you, in more ways than one. Perhaps it helped guide your evolution. Challenge often does. I am being rude again.”

She turned to Knockout and inclined her head. “Hello to you, and to you, Jason. Thank you for the welcome. I would not have come, save that Sunshine made the invitation. I try to honour the regard of others; you’d be surprised how hard it is to come by at times. As for getting out more,” her mismatched eyes narrowed a little, “well, I only recently came back from the Congo. I think it may have put me off the outdoors somewhat.”

Chang gestured around the room. “Perhaps you could introduce me, somewhat? I know few of the guests, and it seems I have come late to the proceedings.”

"Pleasure, er... um, hi, it's nice to meet you," Danielle stammered, facing blushing bright crimson at the sight of the eccentric nova. To her credit, it seemed Danielle was more embarrassed at her own reaction than the sight of Chang, and like Jason, her welcome was genuine, just not as polished.

At the mention of the Congo, Bombshell's incandescent indigo eyes dimmed. "You ended up in the Congo too?" Jason commented with a melancholy smile, then gave Chang an understanding nod. "Then I can see what you mean 'bout the outdoors." She sighed with a musical exhalation, gaze growing distant. "I think it was my time there - what I saw, what happened, and what I did - that makes me believe I can do your song justice."

Jason turned a faint grin on Chang, a bare curve of enticing lips. "So you aren't really wrong. The challenges I faced did inspire me with how I see 'Angel of Harmony and Despair,' and how I'll perform it. What the Dev - enough." Jason shook her head, argent mane rippling like molten silver and nodded at the party before them. "Let's meet a few people, eh?"

With Danielle at her side - she wasn't getting away until she met Caramel Bath - Jason walked Chang around the party, introducing her to the people she knew, and with amiable and charming ease, introduced them all to those she didn't. She was a true vision of grace and beauty, innately glamorous, yet possessed of a girl-next-door approachability. obviously so much more than human while remaining so intrinsically human. In her presence, even Chang found somewhat more acceptance than her otherness usually allowed her.

Finally, Jason led them to Jael and Kara. "Looks like we got another artist joinin' us tonight, girls. Jael, this is Chang Zha-Yang. Kara, my girlfriend Danielle - she's wondering if you've ever considered doing a Sword of the Areola 2. Chang, our hostess, Jael and Kara B'nath, well known as Caramel Bath."

"Well, it looks like Jael and Shelly won't be back..." Sunshine started laughing as new face after new face clustered around Kara. Bombshell had been first, naturally. Though Sunshine hadn't yet watched any porn (a fact that he hadn't discussed with Jael yet), he knew that Caramel Bath was pretty much the definition of a nova sex icon, moreso than Bombshell in some ways. Bombshell's image was more than just sensuality, as was her appearance. It overwhelmed as much as it enticed, whereas, looking at the dark-skinned beauty of Miss B'Nath, it was plain she was all about the enticement. Then Jason had darted off, and Jael had moved in to talk to the new guest, and then... Katya and Ryusei had come over. Then Chang had appeared, with Jason dragging Danielle back. It was not unlike watching particles bouncing around inside a reactor. He shook his glowing head and looked at Revenant. "We'd better go over there, or they'll forget us."

"Uh, sure." the pallid nova answered, too busy gawking at the female fantasy show as, unbeknownst to Alex, a dark voice whispered scathing commentary. He hung back a little, despite agreeing. It was one thing not to wuss out in front of a guy that goddamn sparkled in sunlight, and another to actually charge headlong into a sea of breasts... and that was just counting Knockout and Bombshell. Sunshine didn't seem to have such qualms, however. Giving a shrug to settle the guitar on his back, the jeans-and-tshirt-clad Adonis wandered over to the cluster of novas.

"Hey guys." he said companionably to those he knew, giving the group a warm smile before nodding and beaming at Chang. "Glad you're here, Chang! I didn't know if you would, but I'm happy you decided to come. We might be playing some music later, so I'll give you true artistes warning before I pollute the atmosphere." He grinned at Bombshell and Chang collectively, then turned eyes the same blue as the vault of the heavens on Kara and offered her a hand that glowed with a living, shifting aura of solar light.

"I thought rather than waiting over there like a high-schooler, I'd come and introduce myself." he said with a smile, his skin darkening in a flush under the golden shimmer as he looked into her honey-coloured eyes. Wow. She's... wow. 'Growing up' around Jason and Dani did wonders for helping a young man control his brain, especially when the synapses were light rather than electricity, so Alex didn't stutter or stammer. He did stare, and he did blush, because it never occured to him not to. "I'm Sunshine. Alex. But you can call me Sunshine. Or Alex, if you rather." He stopped, a terminally cute flustered look on his angelic face as he regained control. Apparently living with Jason wasn't enough to Kara-proof him. He rallied and gave her a shy smile. "I'm sorry. It's nice to meet you, regardless of what you call me."
