Kristin glared at the door, as if she could see the disgusting monstrosity of a man hiding behind it, then slung her axe back into the sheath on her back and gave Sarah a nod. She rolled her thick shoulders, then flexed her arms, biceps bulging into impossibly solid mounds of muscle. "I can do it."

Kristin handed her flashlight to Myfwany, then stalked up to the door and began working at the seam between door and wall, the immense strength in her fingers and arms contorting steel. Suddenly, she paused, before breaking the integrity of the door.

"Uh, if Dr. Shattuck is gonna stay here, wouldn't it be better if Dan uses his electricity mumbo-jumbo to power open the door?" Kristin asked, looking back at the others. "'Cause if I shove this door open, it ain't gonna close right no more."

"We'll stay together," Myfwany said firmly. "We've no idea how many of those things are in here. Splitting up is too dangerous. Go ahead with the door. Everyone else, be ready for trouble. If we're getting close to him, it's likely there'll be another attack."

"Okay," Kristin said a shrug. "Here goes."

Thick, hard muscle bunched beneath bronzed flesh almost glowing with vigor, small hands tightened on the heavy security, indenting it deeply, and with a screech of distressed steel, Kristin peeled it open as if it was the top of a can of sardines. The beautiful and brawny teen ripped the door of its recessed hinges, tossing it behind the desk with a loud clang, then unsheathed her axe once more.

Kristin has M-Strength 2, but Irresistible Force active, which allows her to add her Quantum Rating to her Strength for feats of sheer brute force.

The hallway beyond went left and right. The hall to the right terminated in a heavy metal door which was closed and secured. To the left, there were four doors visible before the hall turned to the right. The lights were on here, thanks to Dan's work. He could tell that there was a generator somewhere and he estimated that it held a enough charge to keep the lights on for an hour now.

The first door they could see was labeled "Lab 1". That was directly in front of them. The next closest door to the right was another unisex bathroom and was the only unsecured door in the hallway. The door after was closed and unmarked, as was the one that faced them at the end of the hall. The blood path from the previous room led up and down this hallway, and occasionally, a bare footprint could be made out.

With the power on, the security system utilized here was clear: a keypad was arranged below a thumbprint reader. The keypad was lit with glowing red numbers; the thumbprint reader was a red dot inside a red circle, like glowing, malicious eyes lining the hallway.

"Well I can turn the power off and we can force our way in, of course there's no way to close the door though. I hate to think what actual defense systems could be in this place."

He looked at the blood trail and the footprint. "It might still look human. Don't let it fool any of you."

"'Looking human is the least part of being human. Only by acting human towards our fellow humans do we earn that privilege'," half-quoted Sarah, entering into the grissly hallway, blade hanging ready at her side and blue eyes scanning back and forth across the hallway, "And I say we force it. Whatever defences are in place here can't be worse than fighting more of those things and the... creature that spawned them in the dark with only a flashlight to spot them."

Kristin's flashlight traced the trails of blood smeared on the floor, following one that went left then turned the corner to the right. She flicked the light over the secured doors then glanced over and up at Sarah and Dr. Shattuck.

"If I break open all the doors, this isn't going to be a good, safe place for Dr. Shattuck to study the zombs," Kristin commented in a low voice, even if whispering probably wasn't accomplishing anything. She nodded at the biometric scanners. "I say we go where we can and look for J- the guy, the... thing that lives here now. Those look like those thumb-print scanner-lock things. All we need ta do is cut off its hand, then we can open all the doors. That always happens in the movies."

Kristin took a protective position next to Myfwany once more, slapping the back of her axe against the palm of her hand. "And if it tries to sneak up on us and take up from behind... well, it'll just save us the trouble of tracking the bastard down."

Myfwany nodded slowly. She could find the codes, she thought, but the biometric...that would have to wait. If nothing else, she should be able to reset them if they found the security control office.

"Agreed. We'll leave these rooms alone for now. I don't want to completely wreck this place. That would defeat the point of coming at all. We'll move on. Everyone stay close, watch the ceilings and floors too. Vents, grates...anything these things can come out of."

They followed the hall around the corner. There were three more doors; two to the right and one to the left. The hallway ended in a collapsed wall shortly after the doors. There appeared to have once been more to the base than what they could see.

That left the locked doors. Dan thought about it a bit and went back to the security desk. Fifteen minutes of rifling through the dusty papers produced an over-ride code. When he entered the twenty-digit sequence into one of the touch pads, the lock cycled back.

It looked like they had access.

(Dan, please tell me in your post which door he would have chosen.)

The room opened to a warren of offices. They had been separated with dividers, but it was clear that this room hadn’t been used much. It was splattered with blood, the desks and floor patterned in dried, red dribbles. There had been bodies in here, but someone had removed them.

The red eyes were painted in here as well – on the cubicle walls, facing outward into the room. The blood-eyes watched them as they entered the area. Myfwanny was quickly occupied; all of the research and paperwork was still here. A lot of it wasn’t related to the Z, but it was fascinating research. The computers might also have something, if someone wanted to look.

Sarah stalked into the office, scanning the area for recent signs of the creature that had been Jon or his constructs, trying to ignore the eerie sigils she assumed had been written in blood like the ones outside.

Her sweep came up negative and she returned, features grim as she towered head and shoulders above the disheveled cubicals and silent horror. "Jon and his creatures haven't been here recently far as I can tell. This all looks facinating," she intoned honestly, curiousity perked by some of the pages she'd skimed on her hunt, "But it can wait until we put what's left of the Super Zed he's become to rest."

Standing right next to Myfwany, the fantastically developed teen held her axe at the ready in one hand, her Maglite in the other, frowning at all the eyes painted in blood. Kristin didn't like them, they looked like they were looking at her. It was stupid, they were just drawings, if disgusting ones, and she was tough enough that all bullets did was tickle, and yet... she couldn't stop from looking at the blood-painted eyes in concern.

When Dan suggested they check the other rooms, Kristin eager took a step to follow before realizing Dr. Shattuck was still bent over, trying to read some of the research in the faint like. Reluctantly, she stayed by the doctor's side, hoping she would be done soon.

"We should check the other doors before reading all this stuff, Dr. Shattuck," Kristin urged, then turned to look at Dan. "Can you re-lock the doors we check after we're done, so... so whatever... else is creeping around here has less places to hide?"

Myfwany nodded and put the files down. Just a scratch of the surface, but enough set her mind whirling with possibilities.

Damnit Jon...why did it have to come to this?

"Yes...sorry. Just got a bit carried away for a second. All right, we'll go room by room. The parasites can travel through small spaces, but I don't think Jon himself can, unless he's mutated a lot more. If we check every room, we'll find him eventually."

Of course, there was more to this story, and she knew it. There was too much blood here to just be Jon's. And even if you included his poor, poor assistant, it still didn't explain it all. And what was with the eye motif? Madness maybe, but she'd never seen anything like metaphor or abstraction from a zombie before. Not even a super-zombie.

Who's eye is that, Jon? And what is it watching?

"Next door. Dan and Sarah take lead, Kristin with me."

"No, I can't. The override forces them unlocked, and only a total reset, which would reset the code, would relock them." he shook his head. "I thought of that, and what we'll do is close the door, and take this.." He held up an empty coke can. "and fasten it to the seal. if something opens the door it will fall, and we'll know."

The door opened to a dark room. Dan had to fish out a flashlight and shine it around the room for them to see. It was a mess of equipment - everything from scientific equipment to hammers. The room is well-stocked - almost cramped from all the things in it. It looked like someone had been busy stockpiling all sorts of tools.

The door across the hall was marked Lab 1, like the one around the corner. After some thought, they determined that this was likely the same room. Dan opened the door to a mess. Blood smeared the floor and walls; it had splashed up against the ceiling at some point. The far wall from their door had chains set into the wall; the concrete holding them was new. The most disturbing thing was that the chains ended in broken links.

The equipment had been smashed; most of it appeared worthless. The oddest thing was that there was a nasty blood smear on the back wall, larger than a human, but clearly not splashed there.

"At least they aparently tried to stop him or he tried to stop himself before things entirely fell apart. Hope is a human thing after all," added Sarah with a feeble lie of pride over her unhappiness. Metahumans devolving into Super Zeds and dragging their enclaves down with them? There were enough enclaves out there with only a single metahuman working with them that scenes like this could have happened again and again and again as whatever this... disease... taint... mutation turned their defenders from protectors into predators.

At least you could put a bullet into the head of a crazy normal leader but this... What if she started to...

Lips tight and pale, she added quickly, "Two doors left down here. Shouldn't play around too long."

Myfwany went up to the smear on the back wall, eying it. "There was only one other person here. If anyone chained him up, it was probably himself. But he lost control and either got out...or was forced to get out."

"Dan, Sarah, just a second...let me look at this before we move on."

She tries to get some kind of idea for what would leave a mark like that...

(Using Medicine and/or Investigate to try to get a clue about the blood smear)

All the spatters of blood didn't Kristin, not really. In Paradise, she had seen more than enough blood, plenty of it her own. And the thought of devolving into a super-zombie never occurred to her - that was something that happened to men, showing everyone the monsters they really were.

But stepping into the room marked Lab 1, Kristin froze to a halt, dropping her axe as her hand went to her neck. Her eyes were locked on the sight of the chains, highlighted by the beam of white light cast by her Maglite.

The muscular teen began panting, jade eyes wide and panicky, bronze skin beginning to bead with sweat. Paradise was calling her again, seeking to pull her back into the nightmare. Shaking with the effort, Kristin pulled her hands away from her neck and without taking her eyes off the broken chains, knelt down and picked up her axe.

"I'll... I'll wait in the hall, 'kay?" Kristin asked tremulously, retreating outside the room without waiting to hear a response.

Myfwanny leaned close to the wall. She stared at the smear for a moment, trying to understand. Had it been on the floor, she would have said that it was where a bleeding form had fallen. It looked to her like something had pressed against the wall, then somehow stopped bleeding and was moved or walked away. She wasn't sure what to make of it.

Out in the hallway, Kristin took deep breathes, trying to calm down. Then the door to the left rattled, as if something had failed to open it.

Already on edge with worry and stress at the situation and it's implications, Sarah all-but jumped at the noise, out the door and at Kristin's side in a few long strides, blade at ready for the noise to try again. She'd seen this part of a creepy investigation in movies before Z-Day, the crew reacting to the least noise as if it were grave danger, had warned her clients against it, but god damn it... It was working on her this time.

She'd rarely been in a situation where she could realistically be killed since her change, let alone facing the possibility her good intentions could come to nothing in the end. The blonde megamorph sucked her breath in and waited for the others to come over before acting further.

Trying to keep any thoughts of Paradise far away, Kristin reacted instinctively to the ominous rattle coming from the door. Issuing a sharp yelp, she spun around in startlement, her axe cutting a deep line across the wall before she could pull it back and narrowly missing Sarah's leg.

"I'm... I'm fine, Dr. Shattuck. But I think we're not alone here," she assured Myfwany, a slight breathless to her tone. Kristin firmed her shapely jaw, taking a step closer to the door before pausing, remembering she was supposed to guard the doctor.

Myf put her hand on Kristin's forearm...not to stop her, but just to reassure that she was there.

"We knew that already," she reminded the massive teen gently. "We've seen the monsters already. They're not as scary when we know what they are, what they look like. Just take a deep breath, take a second to remember them, and remember how we beat them before."

She glanced at the others. "Dan, Sarah, get in position to cover whatever's through the door. But before we open it, I want to try something."

Myfwany approached the door cautiously, careful not to get too close to the side of it that actually opened, and knocked her knuckles on it right next to the middle hinge.

"Anyone alive in there?"

"Okay. Dan, open the door. The rest of us will stab or zap whatever comes through next," Sarah exhales, grip tight on her sword as she nods at the Doctor, "That fine with everyone? If... Jon isn't in here then he can only be in one more door and we finish this there."

Kristin gave Myfwany a quick grin in gratitude then stepped in front of the doctor after she knocked on the door, making a conscious effort to control her breathing. Short but broad-shouldered and thickly muscled, there was no mistaking the dangerous strength emanating from the teen, despite her gorgeous youthfulness and progressing pregnancy, her axe a poised threat, held in a rock steady hand.

"I'm ready," Kristin growled, teeth bared in a tight, fierce grin. She wasn't a virgin and she wasn't defenseless - she wasn't afraid of any refugee monster from a horror flick.

The door didn't swing inward like the others had done. All of the door were heavy and had a small mechanism to help them open. Dan and the other could hear the mechanism straining to work before falling silent.

"Got it," Kristin said, putting her fists against the door and shoving. What defeated the door easily was no match for her, and with a sickening slurp, the door moved.

A wall of brown slugs, twins to the three they'd fought in the lobby, poured out of room onto the explorers. Only Myf was far enough back to avoid the rain of monstrosities. The supers could feel them wrapping around them, could feel them wiggle against them; but worst of all was the teeth that scraped at their skin.

"Dammit Jon!" Dan snarled before closing his mouth, his electrical barrier flickering into existence to safely coccoon him, and wreath his hands in crackling fury. He tore viciously at the leeches seeking to devour him, hoping to escape and free the others before it was too late.

The mass of slugs oozed forward with a single-minded purpose. They rapidly filled the hall in front of the door, filling it like the most sickening jello in the world sliding into a mold. Dan and Kristin were engulfed; Sarah found herself knee-deep in them with the slugs rapidly rising. It was like the worst flood ever. Only Myf had escaped - but not for long.

Taken aback by the sheer quantity of the horrible things, Myfwany skipped back away from them until her back hit the opposite wall. Even then she slid along it a few more feet, trying to get some distance. Panic ate at her mind, screaming there's too many! too many to make them disappear in time! i can only attack one at a time!

But something else, something deeper stirred. Was that all she could do? Or was that all she'd tried to do?

She took a deep breath to steady her nerves, held out a hand, and focused on the squirming mass of horrible worm-things. All of them go away. All. All at once. She could do it. ALL of them go away!

The visualization of how she wanted it to work began to form, and she kept repeating the mantra to herself as it gained strength and clarity...

Kristin made a high-pitched whine as she braced herself against the wave of sickening slugginess falling over her, trying to keep them away from Dr. Shattuck even as they flowed and slithered around her. She didn't have a problem killing zombs - there weren't people anymore - and even Paradise had made killing men not unpalatable, but these over-grown leeches were disgusting. She shuddered as suddenly, an image of them trying to crawl up between her legs flashed through her head.

Wading forward through the gross tide, Kristin scythed her axe through thick mass of leeches, left to right, then again, right to left. The enormous strength in her heavy, well defined muscles cut through them easily, creating a clearing... That was instantly filled by the swarming... things.

Sarah resisted the panic-stricken reflex to trigger her giant growth and attempt to crush the swarm to death under her booted heel, not wanting to bring the bunker down on the heads of her engulfed allies or the much more fragile Doctor they were escorting. That last thought focused the blonde megamorph over her roiling unease, and she forced herself through the swarm close enough to bring her blade down on a branch of the mass flowing towards Myf. She pulled the blade back in a smooth motion, gleaming edge ready to parry the incoming teeth of further of these disgusting things.

Dan said nothing, his face a cold mask. Things were out of hand, and could only get worse. It was his hope Myfwany had something good going on, otherwise they'd be awhile. He didn't dare try to electrocute these things, he'd hit everyone else in the room too.

He slashed and ripped at the tentacles, all the while trying to prevent them from grasping him.

Dan's attacks cut and shredded, but he didn't feel like he was making headway. The creatures missed him, their teeth snapping at air. The ones that surged at Kristin caught her, but their teeth couldn't pentrate her skin. The ones going after Sarah tasted only her blade, their teeth rattling on metal.
