[OpNet] Umm... I need a bit of an FYI here...

Eheh... Not to sound like bringing yet another problem of mine to the forefront... More like an honest question on something I'm able to do...

You see, for a little while now, I've been able to use an ability I've discovered to sort of "percieve", and "alter/create" data in a computer.

What smacks me upside my noggin is the fact when I dive into a terminal or server (I only go where invited mind you), the place I enter seems to reflect the owner's tastes, wants, dreams, and fears.

Is this some sort of perceptual thing when I go "data diving", or is this something I should be worried about? I mean, hopping between digital universes is fun, but I gotta know from those that do this kind of thing, if I'm doing it all wrong and putting myself at risk.

A fair concern if I ever seen one.

By the way, this place looks like such a hodge-podge when I dive in, I swear it looks like a building designed by an archetectural commitee.

Must be all the different people that pass through here.

Well, I'll leve things here to the experts. I've got some e-mails and saved op-net feeds to go through. 2 or so months worth...

No probs, E-chan. It's just a Quantum Manifestation called Cyberkinesis. Not to worry ya too much, but the Directive is about to pay you a visit. I don't think it is to thank you for telling the whole world about your new gift, but it could be related.

Any bets on how long that lasts?

Actually, after discovering I could do this, I've restricted myself to these rules:

1: I only go to where I'm authorized.

2: I only access other computers by mind-controlling my terminal.

3: If I do "data-dive" as I call it, It's for the common good. (Looking for missing people, helping the local authorities, etc...)

4: NO RECREATIONAL HACKING. Besides, I've retired and gone White-Hat a long time ago.

5: No entering a server without an invite.

I stick to these, and the only issues I should really have are with those that want me to do things a little less ethical.

Yes, I'm a goody-good.

Comes with the territory I guess.

Authorized by who? Some people think they have the right to say so, but do they?

Interesting way to percieve it.

Whose "common good"? Certainly not the good of the people you chose to hunt down, but I don't think you are too worried about them. Local Authorities? Man, one of my favs. I can always find some "locals" to help me out.

4: NO RECREATIONAL HACKING. Besides, I've retired and gone White-Hat a long time ago.
In your estimation, perhaps.

5: No entering a server without an invite.
Another good one. Who invites you in? The admin, or the owner?
What if #3 comes in conflict with #5? Unless you are doing credit card checks, you aren't likely to get anywhere without a little 'greywork'.

I stick to these, and the only issues I should really have are with those that want me to do things a little less ethical.
Save a life, or keep to your ethics? I can admire either choice.

Yes, I'm a goody-good.
Only if this is a smoke screen. Otherwise, you are a citizen, baby. Willing to help out, until some law steps up in the way. That is why I operate outside the law and make no bones about it.

Comes with the territory I guess.
Pretty much so.

About some of your responses, Jager...

To #2: Jager, I use my abilities through a middle man to provide a trace, when I so wish people to know I'm there. It's a sign of trust. When I'm swimming through dataspace, my name for the opnet's miasma of binary code, I'm practically a part of it unless another of my talent is looking around for me.

To #3: I'm fully aware that some things might be a conflict. I just make sure that the conflict does not work against my common concience or my ethics. Rules are rules, but laws aren't written by god. They are written by man to keep people from destroying each other. I only try to follow those rules as best as I can.

The OpNet I hold in the same regard and respect as a natural resource. I leave only footprints, and take only screenshots.

People should not worry about me. I'm not that good at this new skill of mine, and I'm not willing nor able to be a threat.

But, if someone needs my help, I will use the best of my abilities to provide assistance. I view my abilities as a way to protect others. Not to further my own gains.

Although, if some rewards float my way, I'm not above taking them. Money or fame is the least of my worries now.

Do you seriously think that? Next time someone with your little talent wipes out someone's personal fortune, or crashes the IMF, I will keep that in mind.

How about issuing an international warrant for someone?

Another favorite is disengaging an airports transponder, while disabling the tower's comm. panel.

How about disconnecting a life support section's monitoring system, give the monitors a false signal, and overdose the patients?

Do you want me to continue?

Thank god I have this power on a tight leash.

Another thing... I could do those things... but why?

I mean, really... If I had that sort of ability, why haven't I done it?

Perhaps because I choose not to. I know what temptation can do to a person. But, I seem to not be tempted at all with this power... Of course, alot of people around here think I'm a lot of wasted potential.

Then again, if restraint and a strong ethical and moral standing is wasted potential... Then I'd rather be an underachiever.

Why?

Do you seriously think that? Next time someone with your little talent wipes out someone's personal fortune,

Someone decided to burn a close friend of mine and thought they got away with it.

or crashes the IMF, I will keep that in mind.

A two hour glitch, that was corrected. Bet you will never hear about that one. The perp wanted to make the world a better place by relieving the Third World from their debts. Should have been more careful.

How about issuing an international warrant for someone?

I wanted to slow someone down, and a friend owed me a favor. It was attributed to a glitch in the system.

Another favorite is disengaging an airports transponder, while disabling the tower's comm. panel.

Too long a story.

How about disconnecting a life support section's monitoring system, give the monitors a false signal, and overdose the patients?

I wanted to fake a friends death. Few people go looking for a dead man.

Now to make a more educated response...

I bow to your subterfuge, Jager. You, as they say in some circles, owned me.

I really shouldn't take myself too seriously.

Not to mention I should ceck into why some people say things before responding.

As I've said before, conversations by text only just don't do justice to a face-to-face conversation or debate. Too much is lost or misunderstood.

Heh... I learned something! ^.^

I do, Preston, I do.

But, if it's Jager you're referring to, he seems to think in some directions that make sense... But I tend to worry about stepping on toes a lot more than others. Although I'm sure that Jager thinks about such things as well.

Preston, you're a Samurai, serving the people. Your Daimyo is your mayor, or commissioner, or even director if your from the FBI or something. Your duty is to protect the law and serve the people. You do what you feel is best. Just as I do. Although I serve everyone equally. If their intentions are impure or illegal... They'll find that crossing me, would be a mistake they'll remember. That they will.

Of course, your fellow members of your brotherhood of the thin blue line would be notified. Wouldn't want to be a vigilante.

First Congrats!! (big time) laugh . I'm envious :P (big time). I've been working on getting that power off and on for months and still haven't had any success.

And I'll also say that Jagger is right. Speaking as someone who has gotten into trouble by letting his power get away from him mad , this little ability can land you in a world of trouble.

(On a side note, how did you develope this one? confused )

Take care.

Well, I must have had this ability, and just recently discovered I had it I guess... Some Novas have discovered they had powers they hadn't used yet, I guess I'm one of them.

It's actually pretty fun discovering I haven't tapped into everything untill now... Unless I've got more I haven't touched yet. >.< It's sort of like erupting all over again... Without the headaches. :P

I've had gleamings in the past I had this ability, usually when computers around me exhibit weird glitches. Usually only happening when I had been overclocking my brain and node on long research benders. When I discovered I could actually control what happened, things just went from there.

Now I can dive into the OpNet, and pretty much the whole world is my swimming pool. ^.^

It's pretty sweet.

I think the reason why it's so easy for me to ontrol the ability is because I've kept it under wraps for so long, that I can use it practically at will. At whatever level of juice I need. It's... pretty instinctual to me. Almost like being able to walk or breathe. I'm nowhere near the big-leages, but it's fun just having this ability.

You wouldn't believe how the OpNet looks from inside!

Yes, that's how I picked up "Clone".

But your response (while informative) didn't answer my *real* question which is, "how could I pick up CyberK?" frown:P
