[OpNet] I have to ask...

Cody

Recommended Posts

I been around long enough that you all know who I am. I want to ask some questions.

1. Why wear costumes and have nova names?

2. Who don't do it and why?

3. What is this whole fan thing? I can understand someone like Lemmie or Ghetto wanting fans. They're in a business and selling but what about the rest of you? Why do you care or not?

I ain't got a costume or a cape. Got something distinctive courtesy of Stigmata but ain't no one can match it just 'cause of how she does it. I don't leap tall buildings in a single bound and I use the same name I been using since I was seven when the school teacher couldn't pronounce mine right. Don't care one way or the other about them that want to be me. They ain't and that's that.

If by 'costume' you mean 'outfit specifically designed to accomodate fur and tails' then it's either that, or get hideous hat hair all over my body (which is NOT a happy sight) or, going out in the buff. Which I have a problem with, because where would I keep my celphone and my PDA?

As for my nova handle, well, for a while I tried to keep a wedge between being normal and being superhuman, and my nova handle was part of that. Of course, I soon realize that the cat was out of the bag, and not about to go back in, so right now I don't care quite as much about the privacy. The nickname's stuck, however, and I don't really mind. It was a choice between 'The Vixen' and 'Foxy Roxy.' Which would YOU pick? smile

As for fans, well: I don't really want fans, to be honest. Or at least, if I had admirers, I'd want them to admire me for something more than just a fluke of fate. However, I seem to have picked up a fan base anyways, and while I was a little grouchy about them at first, I've warmed to them a lot recently. It's a heartwarming feeling to get a letter from a young girl who never felt proud of how she looked until she heard about me, and how I try to never let my looks keep me down. It reminds me a lot of my younger days, when I'd write letters to Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett about how much I loved their books and comics.

1. Plenty of novas have licensed their images and need to be distinguished to cash in on it.

Also, many novas wear eufiber to stay clothed while using their gifts.

2. Plenty of novas who try to stay out of the public eye, trying to live their lives like before their eruptions, stay away from flashy costumes and names.

I wear shirts and trousers just like most folks around here, but I use the name Centipede to distinguish myself from the person I was before my eruption. That person is gone now and wasn't very much like me.

I've never used eufiber and don't think I ever will. I don't need it and I don't trust it.

3. The whole fan thing is beyond my capability to understand, but it is very real.

I made the mistake once to let my nova status slip at an exhibition. I did it as a test, to see how the audience would react. I'm pretty sure most of them suspected it anyway, but when I let a current of electricity run over my hand the crowd went mad.

I had to ditch that identity to get some peace.

Sometimes the costume serves a purpose...

TeknoKat has a black suit that she uses as a "medium" for her cyberpathic abilities.

Some elites look the way they do not only to instill fear in their enemy, but also to instill respect among colleagues. Like a calling card.

The members of T2M wear costumes to keep up the whole "superhero" vibe.

Me... I do it to look cute. But only at clubs and "prmotional" affairs. The sailor suit thing... old habit. But, then again, having pink hair and a healthy complexion combined with a healthy obsession with anime could be part of things too. >.<

Generally if you spot me in normal clothing, I'd usually just look like some pink-haired harried salarywoman. Honest.

Having a silly nova name can buy you some peace if you go about it in the right way and it certainly keeps wannabe fans away, who generally don't have the skills to track you down properly. Of course if you decide that you do want a nova name then it makes sense to go for something that is appropriate or at least sounds nice.

Eufiber I do wear, it's not really a costume, though given my choice of colour scheme I'm sure some would disagree. It's mainly for practicality, normal clothing would just get shredded pretty quickly around me. Myself I've always found it perfectly reliable and trust worthy. Sure by some standards it does count as technically alive but it's never spoken to me. I can speak to anything else that's alive, but Eufiber stays silent, therefore I have no qualms about using it. Plus it never gets dirty which is helpful if your 900,000 miles from the nearest dry cleaners.

*yawn*

I guess it's just me, but why do most novas gravitate towards the whole cape and tights motif, or the lucha look... Capitol B-Boring.

Although, bodysuits to lend an air of an "official" status. Not to mention if you are a "team" things tend to gravitate toward a common uniform.

Look at Nippontai's "uniforms". Although I'd bet they were designed for publicity, they have a practical use. I mean, as even some say here, Capes are trouble. In the comics they're cool, but in the real world... Can you say grab and toss?

Hell, the only time I wear anything close to a cape is the rain poncho I have when it's... well... raining.

I mean, I may be a nova, but I don't like getting wet. >.<

1. I still use 'Prodigy' out of an infantile desire to keep reminding Utopia that I haven't gone away. They gave me the name and promoted it like mad. They even gave me a 'catch phrase' that PR was extremely upset when I refused to use it. But, by keeping the identity as an ex-Utopian I hope to keep Novas aware that you can learn and that you can change your mind.

As for 'costumes'. I don't wear one really. My clothing is often changing and unique, yes. But, I do this as an outlet for my creative side and parts of me enjoy the glamour of it.

3. The whole 'fan thing' is simply a symptom of the harm that we do to baselines. They subsume their on value and worth by adopting our identities or by focusing on us as objects of worship. Now, if it were simply aimed at those Novas who do 'good' in the world, I would be less concerned. Then their adoration could be seen as gratitude. But when someone worships or dresses up as an XWF combatant or as a public Terat, then it is symptomatic of the death of baseline ego.

People have always been fascinated with the "bad guys." There was the WWE before the XWF. This isn't a new phenomenom. It warms my heart to know that just about anything can be turned into Teragen propaganda.

The WWE... Eh?...

Oh... You mean what the World Wrestling Federation called itself to try to re-package it's product before it went under because the XWF fights were more of a draw.

It sucks to say this, but the XWF and it's fans are into bloodsport. I'd prefer if they developed a tighter rules system and actually used martial arts. Make it a REAL tournament. One with strict rules and dojo ettiquette. The XWF is nothing more than the old "Sports Entertainment" spectacle merged with some weird deathmatch atmosphere. Trust me, there's worse. Ever hear of "Barbwire City"? That's what some old-school wrestlers call Japan. You see, there used to be these "King of the Deathmatch" hardcore wrestling tournaments. After N-Day, the power level jumped up several notches. And it went underground. Check the net, a few of the novas involved in that barbaric sport have broke their silence. That stuff is the true gladiatorial sport of the 21st century. Apalling.

I think costumes are ridiculous. I see no reason to wear one. I'd rather not draw even more attention to myself. I think they look stupid.

As fot the name thing, the name I was given at birth was not given to me by my mother. I believe my father named me, not really sure. I don't like people to call me by it unless they are very close to me. I've killed for less:) Apep is a given name also, but I chose to keep it because it is entirely who I am now.

All my fans are fucked up. I don't care about them. I've met a few who amused me, but for the most part they are an annoyance.

Why would I wear a costume? I never did. I simplely woresomethign that I thought high lighted who I am. I do not realyy even wear the fiber, so much as it is a part of me. it reflects my moods, and changing towards my wants, needs.

s for a name, I used it because it is good for marketing, and draws people away from my family.

Fans, are people.i could not tell you wiether or not if I like all my fans,, but I iwll tell you this, that i do enjoy knowing that i ccan bring joy to the lives of others.

I used to try to meat veryone of my fans, but that is just to hard.so wile I at least used to meet small groups of fans from time to time..I do nto knwo if I will beable to do so anytime soon.the world is not a very safe place right now...

I don't believe in costumes so much as I believe in dressing comfortably and practically. Hell, I do not even enjoy the idea of wearing a trenchcoat, which it seems, is the staple of being a Nova at times. Especially those with more subtle abilities. Kind of tacky, is it not? It is not my business to decided whether or not a person decides to adopt a name, I did, mostly because the idea appealed to me. I do not however, have any 'secret identity'.

I do not any fans really. I do garner a lot of attention and affection, mostly because of my appearance than any actions I have done.

Kinda holly, ain't it? smile

For Elites, T2Mers, or anyone else in the 'Biz', it is marketing. The more famous, or infamous, you are, the more attention, money, and status you get.
Famous people have been altering their names for centuries, if not millenia. To make it more catchy or memorable. Nothing new.
Some Terats take on names to detach themselves from who they were.

Quote:
2. Who don't do it and why?
Some novas don't care about the publicity, aren't what you would call photogenic, or, actively avoid the limelight for personal reasons.
As for who don't do it, that would be telling, wouldn't it? If you want to avoid attention, why would I want to go against your wishes?

Do I care? Yes and no. I don't think we are annihalating baseline culture like James' seems to think. Disco didn't kill Punk, did it?
It isn't that simple, but there are similarities. We are not the end all and be all of baseline existance. We are just holding center stage.
I care because there is a fine line between fan and fanatic. An unscrupulous nova could blur and bend that line. Hell, some of us already do that.
That kind of thing ... interests me.

Saki-babe, how many matches you got under your belt to be trashing my way o' life like that? You think just because we all don't go in for that chop-socky crap that were all undisciplined fucktards? You think there's no etiquette and honor involved here? Think twice.

Ah, I cut deeply.

Brother X, let me put this to you mildly. You're pandering to the lowest common denominator in the XWF. Prancing and posing, looking all mean and nasty. Then, you beat the snot out of some poor slob trying to make a buck. All to the howls of the fans.

Yeah. No respect for the true art of combat. If you guys are so bad, fight some REAL Nova martial artists. They'd "chop-saki" through that ego-enhanced viewpoint of yours.

It shouldn't be about the money or fame, it should be about improving one's self to better defend what you care for most.

Endeavor, how many XWF combatants do you know? Really know?

A pile of crap with gold at it's core is still a Gold Mine.

Yes, it panders to the Masses. And?

T2M doesn't pander?

Elites don't pander?

It is the rare individual who does not give some portion of their life over to "the game". "The game" being; how we look, act, and speak in public and under the public eye.

Is it who we really are? Rarely.

So, the XWF is obvious about it. Its their job. Have you ever watched a real martial arts competition?

It isn't very exciting. Exciting isn't what they are about. Thus, their fanbase, budget, and perks aren't as good.

And some of them are still egotistical shitheads.

I'm not a big fan of the XWF, but I don't knock their performances. I don't do what they do.

Everything we do is under a microscope as far a baselines go. Get your head out of your ass if your having trouble seeing that. So I choose to exploit that and have a little fun while doing it, it's no different than you woking for TKI. Oh and Duke Baron takes exception to being called "Poor Slob" girlie. You might want to avoid the Amp Room for the next few years.

You ain't never seen me fight then have you? By the by chickie, I have fought "REAL Nova martial artists" and mopped the floor with 'em. I know how to fight and I know how to use my "powers" to do what I need to do. It ain't ego Saki, it's self confidence.

Are you saying that every Nova endeavor should be completely selfless, without the Nova getting anything for their efforts? Did you say to your boss Technokat; "No don't bother paying me, I'm just trying to improve myself." Are you willing to give away everything you have, everything you own?

Take another look around you saki-girl, we're gonna get fame and money, no matter what we do. Only real way to avoid that is to stay out of every aspect of baseline life and not many of us can do that easily. To be honest, money don't mean much to me. I've lived with nothing but the clothes on my back before, so doing it again ain't no sweat for me.

Get over yourself Saki and go join Utopia or something.

Apep, do you think only those of your policlub have the right to change?

Should I change back to the way I was when I first came here?Would you like that?Would you want me to have the power I have now, witht eh goals I used to have?If so I can make sure you get your wish..And I can makes sure to do all those acts in your name.

then again, I do not think only your policlub friends should have the right to change. I do not even think that only novas should have the right to change. The thing is that everything changes.not just you , me, humans, novas. Everything changes, you just do not want to see what is before you.

Why don't you let her stand up for herself?

Apep, the way you look at eh wrold is refreashing. Itreminds me that the limits of the mind are not always changed by the adding of a node.

you were asked something that is rather simple. Do you think that only the teragen have the right to change their views.

Your anwser was.I don't like you, so shut up.

I consider Endeavor a friend.I see in her things that should be fostered.those things happen to be related to things you seemingly want o destroy, because she is not a member of your policlub.

So I ask you this again. Do you think that only members of your club should have the rights to change their minds?

Don't presume to understand my mind. You were told to shut up because you are constantly boasting about how powerful you are or how you could hurt this person or that if you wanted to. It gets old, quickly. Nobody cares.

I am not a representative of the Teragen. I do not speak for them. But when have we ever changed our views?

Yeah, Endeavor can change her mind all she wants. I hope she does. I just can't believe she would so vehemently protest that these people are so wrong when she herself was not so long ago one of them or aspiring to be them.

Before you insist on responding as the self-important cunt that you present youself as, why don't you actually read the posts that you are replying to, or maybe you should have someone else explain them to you because so often you just don't get it.

1) The only two costumed novas I know of were talked into those tights by their managers. Same goes for their nova handles. They were Elites. I am not sure why they keep it up, because they are semi-retired, now.

2) I don't, and neither does my dad. I never thought to ask why. I just seemed natural for him to keep on doing what he was doing. Can't say he has ever given it much thought. Too many other things to do, I guess.

Me? Never seemed right, just giving up on who I was. I mean, what's wrong with my name? I like it and that's good enough for me.

3) I don't think it is likely that I'll develop any fans. What's so memorable about a shirt, jeans, and tennis shoe wearing guy?

Stigmata is so cool, exotic, and special. She is what I think of when I visualize a real-life nova.

Sakurako Endeavor Hino, Lemmy, Apep, Sandy Davis, Brother X, Prodigy, Jager, Ashnod, and Doctor Troll are all larger than life. Some intangible sets them apart.

I've met Vixen, Walker, Anomie, and Deeth. They are all a step beyond in one way or another.

I just feel like Neil.

Is there something wrong with that?

Might as well ask that question to gang members or street kids. The same thing that makes a 14 year old runaway change their identity also goes on with a lot of Novas. It's about carving out your own identity independant of the rest of the shit in your life. At least for some.,,

I guess that all depends on the Nova. If I were an 9-to-5er in an office or lab somewhere I don't think I'd be calling myself "Brother X" if you know what I mean.,,

I don't know how many fans I got right now since I haven't had much exposure yet, but I can say that I don't think it's all that big a deal. I mean, fans come with the territory in my line o' work, and in some ways are an important part of my job, but I ain't gonna cry if it turns out no one likes me. It just means I won't make as much as some of the other guys at the "office." It ain't like I'm in this to get filthy stinking rich anyways.

Man if my manager read what I just wrote...

That's the point. It's okay for you to have a job in which you exploit your powers to make money, but-loads of it, but it's not okay for an XWFer to do the same thing? This is a job for us Saki, and it ain't nearly as lethal as you seem to think. If I wanted blood on my hands I would've stayed with DeVries.

Actually, to add my opinion to this mess, Endeavor has consistently shown that she is unable to remain focused on any given area of interest for more than a week or two. Apep's comment wasn't directed at Endeavor's change of opinion, but at another of Endeavor's changes of opinion..

You could have said something about Endeavor's life, or the stress she's been through, or any number of focal and factual reasons that Endeavor has come to the choices she's made. You didn't.

Your response, that this was a Teragen bias and that she felt only Terats have the right to change opinion, was not only horribly sterotypical of your one-dimensional thinking, but demonstrates a remarkable ignorance on your part for failing to consider the context of statement before replying. Instead, you immediately attacked Apep's Teragen allegiance and made it an issue of politics rather than the matter personal distaste and frustration from which Apep was approaching it. If you wanted to defend Endeavor, that's all well and good, but attacking the Teragen as your defense shows how little you actually defended her. In short, the only defense you summoned for your friend was to attack the reputation of the one who criticized her. Then, you followed up with some remark about how all living things have the right to change. How trite. First you attack the critic, then make a very broad generalized "feel good" remark that is supposed to demonstrate your supposed awakened perceptions.

How utterly mundane and unenlightened for someone claiming elevation in evolution and divinity.

To quote your own words, the way you look at eh wrold is refreashing. Itreminds me that the limits of the mind are not always changed by the adding of a node..

And to answer the question you posed to Apep earlier, it's exceedingly obvious by your words and posture than you haven't changed in the slightest. You want to use your newly acquired power, if you even have such a thing, as backing to your position, please do so and spare us the posturing.

Now, to answer the topic at hand.

1: I don't wear costumes. My Nova name represents the shedding of my unerupted identity. My birth name is known to a select few who are close to me, or in one instance, to someone I trusted enough to give it to.

2: I don't wear costumes because they are playing off the concept of a "superhero," something I find completely and utterly offensive to our people.

3: I don't care about having a fan base. I understand that I have one, for whatever reason, but I wish they'd think more about what I'm speaking and writing about and realize that I'm nobody that should be glorified in that manner.

Brother X:

I'm exploiting nothing.

When I express my creativity at TKI, yes, I get paid, but I do so to see if I can top my previous achievements. If I can help people and perhaps make someone's day brighter, safer, or easier, so be it. It's not exploiting my abilities. I'm using my God given gifts to improve the lot of the human race.

I used to like watching the XWF, but certain changes of my world view recently has changed my opinion of your... profession.

I could easily say the same thing about my abilities too Saki. Sure I don't create anything like you super-megabrain-inventors, but I still have the drive to get better at what I do, and what I do is combat.

I also make peoples live bighter, safer and easier, it just ain't as visible as your oh so selfless contributions. Funny though, I don't see you or TKI giving away your creations to the people that need 'em. In fact TKI makes some of the most expensive stuff on the market. Yup, your improving the lot o' the human race alright, well the rich half anyways.

This whole XWF side track though.... Sounds like fun. Not sure if they would like getting beat up by lingerie though wink
