[OpNet] To go public?

I am sorry to drop a note in on this board without an introduction, but I was wondering if anyone here could give me a little advice.

Approximately eleven days ago I errupted in what, at the time, seemed to be a situation that was more desperate than it turned out to be. I was more than a little scared by the strength I displayed and managed to quietly slip away before anyone could come to investigate.

No major, visible changes seem to have happen to me to the point that the only thing a friend has commented on is that I looked 'healthier and less tired'. Having somehow avoided notice, I am now unsure where to go from here.

I have no wish to damage anything or anyone accidentally due to lack of training, but a large part of me wants to simply try to forget what has changed and go back to my day to day worries rather deal with new ones what has happen presents.

If anybody is willing to talk this over with me or suggest someone I could so with, without forcing me into an early decision, I would be grateful.

You could do that of course. Some novas do spend their time in retreat or outright denial of what they have become. The drawback is that if you proceed on that course you will never know what might have been.

You appear to be in need of a mentor and perhaps body guard though I do not suggest you have enemies you need to be protected from at this time. I recommend contacting the nova calling himself Ronin. He is experienced, capable of discretion and the experience would be beneficial to both. He should be along shortly but allow him a day or two in the event he requires time. The decision to become a mentor is not one that should be made lightly or without careful consideration.

My thanks for you advice, Widget, and I will try to keep at least some of it in mind. I can understand how some people might deny that they are novas entirely, but I will try to keep myself from that particular personal delusion. I realise that I can not reverse what has happened, but do I really need to scream that I am a nova to the world from day one?

In case I implied something in my first post, I feel obliged to point out that a bodyguard is unlikely to be nessisary for me at this point in time. What happened was a combination of misfortune and misinterperation on my part rather than deliberate action on someone elses.

If anyone else would like to give any other advice or suggestion, publically or privately, then please do so.

Hi Neyvan
There's no reason why you can't train yourself in your powers, it worked for me. You mentioned displaying strength, and that you slipped away quietly, so I'm guessing that your much stronger than before and maybe more stealthy as well. Try using your powers in a controlled environment and see what happens. Maybe something like seeing if you can crush rocks or punch through planks of wood, but put pading on your hands in case your not so strong as you first thought. If your sensible there's no reason why you can't explore your powers in privacy without undue interference by outside parties. Try lot's of things like reading books in case you've developed a photographic memory, try persuading people to do things in case you've become mega-personable.

Just don't go thrusting your face into blow torches and vats of acid or go jumping off any tall buildings, at least not at first. Lots of experience and a bit of intuition will teach you what you can and can't do, don't try and rush it.

If you start developing lots of weird mutations or suffer any funny mental effects you might want to seek some professional help. Three organisations with reportedly good training/support methods spring to mind, you can usually find members of all three on this board.

On a legal note, in a lot of countries the circumstances of your eruption are considered an act of god, after all you can't reasonably have expected to erupt so your not fully responsible for what happened. As long as you haven't punched some petty theif's head clean off you should be OK. If you have it's probably best you go to the police rather than letting them come to you, it makes them irritable and difficult to please, find a good lawyer first.

Oh no, Rashoud training is quite useful to a newly erupted nova. Just try not to take any unnecessary medications (ie, don't take any if you can possibly help it), and try to order out if you can. Not only because you should try and maintain your independance should you decide that greener fields await you, but because the drugs at least are mildly addictive.

Oh, BTW, following the above instructions is easy for any nova. How? Sell your screen rights to N!. They still pay hefty prices for exclusive screening rights of new and upcoming novas, and that alone can pay for general nova living expenses for a good 12 months. Just ensure it's a limited time contract, and you're right as rain, and if you're a natural on the screen, it can open your horizons quite a bit...

Widget.

Was verstecken Sie?

Nevyn.

What the other have told you is largely true.

While you could conceivably turn your back and walk away, however, I wouldn't advise it. You're something more, now. There is little point in pretending to be something you are not. Unless you never speak to another baseline, you will begin to notice the profound and startling differences that distinguish you from them. In time, it is quite likely that your feelings of isolation and misunderstanding will reach a boiling point.

There's no point in giving yourself that kind of stress needlessly. Embrace what you are. Your previous posts have given no indication that you have become a monster (yes, Terats, I will use the term negatively -- to quote the bard, "Suck it, bitches") as a result of your eruption, so chances are your recent development is a very good thing, indeed.

Roll with it, Nevyn. You have the ability to be so much more.

And though Widget was dangerously presumptuous in the above post, it was a strangely correct presumption. If ever you need help or assisstance, my offer to all still stands. I have experience in this sort of thing and may be able to help you a great deal.

Nevyn,

Let me answer your question with a question. "Do you have any idea what your quantum gifts are?"

If you can do 'cool stuff', then going public will make you famous & rich.

If you can't do anything, then you will still be famous, but less rich, and you might regret it.

It is a big, bad world and a nova is a real player. There is an anti-nova fringe, and the Directive, etc. Worse, being a publically known Nova will change your relationships with everyone you know. Most novas are beter off in the game, but we are varied enough I can imagine one who wouldn't be.

Most of us never had the option of staying in the closet. You might not really have a choice depending on how flashy your powers are. Given the choice, I would still have gone public. But, depending on your gifts, at the moment you might have the best of both worlds.

Let me see...

The honest and polite apology is supposed. We did not encounter, but I know your reputation. The advice that was given to Nevyn was based on this knowledge. Nevyn does not require a clever and perceptive teacher, a stupid God who feigns to be smart. Half of the people here are insane. Is "insane" the right word?

No. Defective brain. Most people here offer only aid to in order to increase its renown.

It does not surprise that you do not know me, because I am only a mouse in the firm of the elephants. I do not search for renown. There is no secret that surrounds me. You ask a question and I answer.

How close was I?

Syntax, tenses and noun structure is off but the verbs are surprisingly clean. Are you using online software to translate?

Closer would have been;

"Your sincere and polite apology is accepted. We did not meet though I know your reputation. The advice given Nevyn was based on this knowledge. Nevyn needs a clever and perceptive teacher, not a stupid god pretending to be intelligent. Half of the people here are twisted in some way. Is "twisted" the right word?

No. Perceptually deficient. Most offer assistance only to increase their own fame.

It does not surprise that you do not know me, as I am only a mouse in the company of elephants. I do not seek for fame. There is no mystery surrounding me. Ask your question and I'll answer."

Now; with a clean translation can you find the messages within the message?

wink

Added note;

Translation software is useful but it tends to fall short on metaphors.

Unless, of course, you're using Fourier-Bennman Translation Matrices. If there's one for the languages that you're translating with, they have close to 100% accuracy. To be completely accurate, 98.536% accuracy, but that's only because a lot of languages have words in the exact same linguistic space...

Ah, but they're not free. Kind of pricey in fact. The freeware, or use-for-ad-annoyance software, is useful but it lacks the fuzzy logic to distinguish the meaning of a word based on context. Like the American use of the word "fire". Depending on the context the meaning can range from a chemical reaction, to shooting a projectile, signifying a desire for something to "start".

I do have a little something for this situation.

It uses a voice recognition system, (very easy to aquire the proper hardware these days), and this new little proggie I brewed up. It does raw translation of your voice into text. It also does syntax correction on it's own. It's not as accurate (75%) but it is free. If you don't mind having your computer do dictation all the time for you.

This situation? Ronin didn't intend for this conversation to be a secret or he would have sent a private message.

Given Ronin's feelings on Sandy's interuption of his conversation with Apep, I find it far more likely that he was interested in seing who would translate, and comment on, a message directed specifically at Widget. I too, find that highly interesting.

An assumption wise, thorough and ultimately correct. Gold stars.

Now, can you puzzle why that would interest me?

Cookies and milk -- and maybe something even more useful -- if you can figure it out.

Sandy.

What a truly interesting reaction. "Too freely used", eh?

For what it's worth, you've brought a smile to my face, ma'am.

Widget.

My most humble and honored thanks for your kind words on my behalf. It is the deign of my ilk to speak of the accomplishments of others instead of themselves. If anything need be said on our behalf, it is our hope that our actions for good or for ill will speak for themselves, and that word of those deeds will spread by the mouths -- and through the fingertips -- of those who have the knowledge. You do me a great service, and for that I thank you.

Still, I was not aware I had any sort of "reputation" at all. Without exposing myself with specific questions, I must ask; what do you know of me? And how?

I would also humbly request that any pertinent information potentially dangerous to my solitude be sent to me privately. Naturally, I leave the deciding factors up to your discretion.

Care to tell me about yourself?

To be honest Ronin, I do not know you well enough to fathom why you truly find the information useful. If I were to hazard a guess, I would surmise that you are using this as a way of learning more about those here. While many of those who post here have the interesting tendency to brag and boast, often it is a person's actions that reveals their true nature.

Of course, that is only one possibility out of many, but it seems the most likely from what I have observed of you so far.

Well, the consensus seems to be that the advantages of acknowledging my erruption would outweight the problems, but that even if I do not 'come out' I should not fall into the trap of denying that I have changed.

Is this correct, or have I misunderstood?

From the remarks from various people have made, going to a Rashoud clinic appears to be an option but not as well favoured a one as the media seems to make out. Is that also the consensus, or does anyone have something more to say on the matter?

As various people have addressed various issues (including translation software for some strange reason...), I will attempt to comment on the each in turn.

Except for on the topic of software.

In reference to Walker's remarks, I am not quite sure of certain legal complications. There is the potential that I may have injured someone unknowningly, and a matter of some missing property which I inadvertantly 'lost', but as far as I am aware no one was hurt.

Teknokat, I will keep your suggestion about screening rights in mind. Although if they managed to make a spectacular out of my erruption then I would be very impressed by -their- powers over hype and spin...

I feel that I should thank you, .ronin, for your offer. When Widget first suggested your name I sent a message to your privately but it seems not to have been recieved by you.

David Smith, what you said is something that I wil have to think of. As you might understand, practicing to see if I can acomplish something 'flashy' is rather hard since any success is likely to render my preferences about going public rather moot.

More than likely you would know if you had anything flashy by now... although there are exceptions.

You question on whether to go public is presented as an either/or, that isn't quite true in practice.

You could try things out in a remote place and see if you do have a choice (any flashy powers).

You could try to enter PU (or DeVries) under an assumed name. It might work. It might not. It depends on how public you are right now and whether or not you are on file anywhere. Similarly, some powers would make this easier/harder. PU would probably bring in a telepath. Other agencies might not bother or might not have one available.

Remember that some organizations (like DeVries) do a better job at keeping their traines' names quiet. Getting training isn't quite the same as going public.

Best of Luck.

Has there been any media coverage of the events surrounding your 'eruption'? That should fill you in on any missing details. You mentioned missing property as well, I may be able to help in such a matter if you can remember roughly where you saw it last. If you are in doubt as to the legal ramifications try consulting a lawyer, get your lawyer to ask around on your behalf, he can go down the police station and check if anything was reported.
