  1. Kenzie paced the office, glancing out occasionally through the floor-to-ceiling windows down onto the gathering area below. The invitations had gone out and all had been received. Many would not be coming, many would, and she ticked over the list of official rsvp’s in her head one more time. Behind her, a tall man, his suit finely tailored and immaculately pressed, with an amused smile. “You’re going to wear a hole in the floor, Kenz,” he said after a few minutes. “The floor is made of metallic glass,” she retorted dryly. “It’ll survive.” He closed the distance between them and placed his hands on her slender shoulders. “Then relax. Everything’s done but for the party now.” She leaned against him and tried to take deep breaths. “What if no one shows up?” “Several already have,” he reminded her. She frowned and tried again, “What if someone blows up?” “Then the room will get very messy.” He squeezed her shoulders, careful not to disturb the delicate lace and beading of her dress. “And you’ll still have to give your speech.” She made a face and pulled away from him, rubbing her arms nervously. “I can talk to heads of state and dignitaries all day long. Why is one little speech making me feel like some preteen before prom?” “Because these aren’t some petty politicians or noisome officials-“ “Aren’t you basically ‘some petty politician and noisome official’?” She interrupted with an arch question. He chuckled, “Yes, and you don’t have a problem talking to me, now do you?” She smiled, just a little, then sighed and stepped over to the windows again. “But really, Joseph, what if no one agrees? What if they all just leave afterwards?” “Then we’ll make a new plan. We’ll find others and we’ll keep moving forward.” He stepped up behind her again and peered over her shoulder, down to where the banquet tables were glittering in the morning light and the service teams were busily putting all the finishing touches on the grand hall. “Look at this place, Kenzie. Look at everything you’ve done in just a few short years. A city on the sea. Our Elysium. You did this. Remember that, when you’re out there talking to them.” “I didn’t do it alone, Joe,” she said softly. “And you won’t be alone out there. We’ll be there with you.” He kissed her on the temple, an almost fatherly action even though they were less than two decades apart in age. “You can do this.” She nodded, finding that inner core of strength that had seen her through the years of silence in Japan and then the whirlwind of changes that the Hadron Collision had brought. Her shoulders straightened and she lifted her chin up. “I can do this.” Let's Begin! This is an open group fiction to help kick off the Alpha World game. Kenzie Grace is the head of state of new micro-nation city built in the sea about ~450 miles off the coast of LA. She has contact nearly all the known supers in the world and invited them to a large gala event at her city. These invitation were made by a person, not just a card or random email, and are for the costumed identity of characters. The gala is for supers to meet (in their masks) and to discuss the changes the world has gone through since the Hadron Collision. I'll leave specifics of how each PC was contacted up to each player, but Kenzie is thorough and determined, as are her messengers. The city's name is Elysium, it is built on the ocean floor and juts up a little over three miles, the top-most parts soaring above the surface of the ocean. It is the only nation currently with a working teleportation system, and Elysium's trade and travel rely heavily on it. There is limited docking and landing space around the above-water portion of the city as well, but the teleportation system is generally much more convenient. Kenzie is the head of state, formally known as the Keeper of Elysium (teehee, see what I did there?), and owns...well, the whole thing. Elysium's been about for nearly two years now and is currently petitioning for recognition by and inclusion in the UN. PCs can get to the city however they choose (most convenient choice is again the teleporter) and they will be given nice rooms to stay in, accommodations as needed, and be guided to the Azure Hall for the gala at the appropriate time. This can be done in your initial post, or all I'll have a 'everyone gets gathered up' summation in my next post from Kenzie. I wanted to give people a chance to post before I moved straight to the gala, so if PCs arrive early, want to poke about the city, or otherwise describe getting there and settling in, there's room to do so. Azure Hall: A grand hall in shades of white, blue, and turquoise. It is set right at sea level with large windows along two sides for viewing. There are tables to sit at, a large buffet set out, and a podium at one end (one of the sides with windows behind it). Everything Desiree does is from a sense of Responsibility and yes guilt. She used her powers to protect not only herself from her abusive father but her little sister and to a lesser degree her mother as well. After he was gone it was responsibility for taking care of her family after he left that drove her to take up the petty crime but it was the guilt she felt after saving Master Tien Vo that cemented "the with power come responsibility" after all she is the one with the powers when there are others who could do more perhaps but she now feels that this power widens her responsibilities to even greater extent to others outside her family and close circle. POINTS Abilities : 18 Powers: 85 Advantages†23 Skills: 11 Defenses: 13 Unused: 0 Background/Description: Desiree Ramirez is a girl with issues born to immigrant parents one Mexican and illegal the other Vietnamese, young and uneducated. She was regularly beaten by her drunk father and bullied by bullies at school because she was mixed race.She was 14 when the event occurred and when her powers manifested, she turned the tables and gave her father the beating of his life. He soon after disappeared leaving Desiree to care for her mother and younger sister, Margret Marie. As for the bullies, they didn't escape her attention either and more than one found themselves bloodied and beaten in the street after dark for picking on her or her little sister To handle her responsibilities Desiree was becoming a petty criminal, using her powers to steal enough money from local businesses to keep the bills payed and to have a very modest life for her mother who blamed her for her father running away, and her sister who was very bright and had a future. Keeping her powers a secret was easy and no one was the wiser if things had kept up the way they were heading she very easily could have become a super villein as that was the path she was on, but fate intervened. One night while enjoying a stolen beer and a smoke on a rooftop she heard the sounds of fighting curious she altered her density and floated over the rooftop to witness a pretty astonishing sight and elderly Vietnamese man she had seen before in this part of east LA engaged in a furious fight with several youths belonging to a local gang chapter. What was astonishing was that the old man was winning! it was obvious that he was a very skilled martial artist and was easily wiping the floor with his assailants. Then Desiree saw more youths this time brandishing guns enter the ally in which the fight was taking place. Seeing that the old man was outnumbered and outgunned she didn't hesitate instead she jumped down and entered the fray using her powers to quickly mop up the gang members. The old man was thankful but also critical of Desiree and not the least amazed by her ability to shrug off bullets or fly. While he did not know her he had seen her and considered her not much better than the gang members she had saved him from for somehow he knew that it was she who was responsible for the constant thefts of money from business in the local area. This hurt Desiree she didn't want to be like those gang-bangers she didn't want to be a bad person. She promised the old man that she would stop stealing and only use her powers to help others and to fight the gang members. He seemed pleased with this and told her that if she did this he would let her attend his fighting school for private instruction because she was not a very good fighter at all. Thus was born the identity of the Wraith. Since then she has become a champion of the local neighborhoods against the violent gangs and drug traffickers. She has taken money from the defeated gangs and used it not just for herself and her family but to help ease the pain for those less fortunate in east la and the areas nearby. She has even used some of the money to buy a small restaurant for her mother where she also works part time helping her mom and to help send her little sister to collage. All the while she has been trained and mentored by Master Thien Vo the owner of a martial arts academy in the east LA region. Description: Desiree is short at 5' even and some what thin. Her features are an exotic mix of Asian and Latina. She is now well toned since she became a student of master Tien Vo. Her hair is Black but she colors it with various washable dyes in a punk fashion during the day and her eyes are Green. When she goes out as Wraith she washes out the colors if she has time or rubs in some black dye which she keeps in her purse if she needs to switch in a hurry. Her dress style is street punk much to her mothers annoyance. She does not wear jewelry. She very rarely smiles always appearing serious and determined. Her sister can make her smile and laugh though.
  3. Velma Thompson Velma was born wanting nothing. Her family, the Thompsons, the head of the family owned transport firm Thompcorp, a world-wide corporation that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the largest postal and heavy transport firms. She's the middle daughter of three children, her older brother and younger sister. She was a bright girl growing up, but lacked the business acumen of her brother, and seemed more to be the protector of her disabled little sister who has no use of her legs from an injury while she was a toddler. Velma's parents saw Velma would be better served in life to follow her direction in life, focussing on setting her older brother up to take over the company at some point. This became something not in their future, but in their present lives. When Velma was 14, her parents were coming back on a flight back to Los Angeles from Honolulu, when the flight vanished from radar over the Pacific off the coast of Hawaii. Rescue efforts provided nothing. It was as if the aircraft simply disappeared. What no one knew, was some strangeness had happened, a person on board suddenly developed powers that caused the flight to vanish. To where no one knows, but everyone on board was lost to the world in the process. This thrust her 20 years old at the time brother into his role as the head of Thompcorp. Also the inheritance the children recieved was evenly split, but Velma's brother, Alexander, split his portion between Ann and Velma, as he was pulling a check from his new duties. Velma took to her lonlier life, with only Ann and her guardian, the family Butler, James to take care of things until Velma became an adult. Velma graduated Valedictorian from the private school she went to high school in, then entered CalTech looking to get a career in being a Meteoroligist with the National Weather Service. She showed to be a very apt student, and on her summer break between her freshman and sophomore year, she went on a "storm chasing" trip with her Professor. During the trip, her group was caught in a storm, and while taking shelter a F5 tornado came down upon them, and where they were holed up would not survive and they couldn't run. But before the storm came too close, Velma's powers woke up. She managed to hold the tornado in place and dissipate it. Everyone present saw her do this, but out of gratitude kept this a secret, chalking it up to the storm calming as it approached. In her Sophomore year, Velma realizes she's got an interesting life ahead, indeed. When she got back home from her trip before her second year began, she decided to pull a few contacts to start putting together something. Somewhere in her head she wanted to do something more than just be a student, so while she started physically training, she had a protective coat made for her to handle what she thought she had the greatest chance of running into. By the end of her second year in college she started appearing on the Los Angeles streets in her signature rain slicker, stopping muggings and saving lives during spring floods. Now in her Junior year, she focusses on her studies further, while juggling taking care of her sister and managing her "night life". Personal Info Velma has blonde hair, which when in class she keeps well styled, although she lets it go when she is operating as "The Gale". She has piercing blue eyes, and tends to wear the best clothes. When not being The Gale and having free time from her studies, she volunteers in a program that gets children interested in Science, traveling from school to school doing programs or speaking in presentations at libraries. Complications Identity: Velma Thompson is the secret identity of The Gale. Motivation: Responsibility: Unlike the typical rich person stereotype, Valma feels she has a responsibility to use her fortunate upbringing for the good of society. Now that she has powers, that's an even greater motivator. Quirk: Velma loves the rain, and loves Los Angeles' few rainy days, and does whatever she can to be out enjoying them. Responsibility: Velma is a student at CalTech, and as such, has those responsibilities tacked on to her "night life". Dependent: Velma takes care of her disabled sister, Ann, a Junior High student.
