  1. I guessed as much Dari, but that is not in Akira's nature if she can participate directly. Since their Attack bonus is the same, Akira at least would not insist it be the other way around. I just assumed the answers to my questions as Dave did not answer and the site moved to really throw a wrench in the works.
  2. Okay, we moved sites and it took me awhile to figure out what was going on. Now I need to figure out how to get notification emails again.
  3. Akira follows Dari, calmly but hustling out of necessity as they move to their battle stations. As Dari settles into the controls of one gun turret, the Padawan climbs into the control seat for the other turret. "Milady, I suggest we concentrate our fire on the incoming fighters, one at a time. I will try to follow up your hits with ones of my own." Actions 2 Move Actions to get into position at the second gun turret
  4. Quick question before I can post. We have two turrets with separate fire linked cannons, not two turrets fire linked, right? Dari is intending to man one gun turret herself and asking Akira to stand and watch? I would rather know if the other turret is readily available or not before I post. Thnx.

Who's running the Captain?

Regardless of the mechanics, the player is still writing their part of the scene so I fail to see how this would adversely affect anything for a player's individual part in the story. Sorry, I fail to understand your point. While my explanation focused on time as the main issue (which is our problem at the moment), it assumes the content of the player's post will be the same regardless. I certainly treat my combat posts as role-playing opportunities and situations where we should continue to interact with each other. Perhaps if people didn't have to wait so many days for their turn to come up, they would be more excited and post even more meaningfully when the round begins. So my proposal is to let the players resolve their actions in order posted during the group's turn instead of waiting around for 2 weeks every round. Perhaps 72 hours is too much for this group, but if Dave gives the players 1 week to post, that should be more than enough time.
  8. I am an very active DM and player on two other sites (URPGs and EnWorld) where the heavy role-playing is often non-existent and general game-play is more of the focus. I have probably 100 PbP combats under my belt now from behind the DM screen and these are conclusions I have learned from observing other DMs and running games using both methods (Individual & Group): 1. DM should always roll ALL of the initiatives so there is no waiting once the encounter kicks off. No decision making on the players part, so why do they need to roll themselves? However, if one believes differently that players should get to roll for things like that, then ask for the players to pre-roll 3-4 Initiatives and the DM saves them for when needed. Needless delays in PbP should be avoided; things move slow enough as it is. 2. Group Initiatives helps keep flow going when people can only post once per day or less frequent. It means that if you are not waiting on results from other players actions or delaying until after someone else takes their turn, a round of combat can be posted in 24-36 hours and we can realistically complete 3-4 rounds of combat a week. In PbP this is good. This has worked well in all of my games and everyone enjoys it better. I also tend to put a 72 hour limit on the players' round before NPCing the lagging players too. 3. However, individual Initiatives are good for better tactical environments, particularly when the opposition is not grouped all together (I think it should be all or none, btw). In my game with only 2 players, 1 round takes about 24-48 hours. In my game with 3 players, 1 round takes 48-72hours. So with 5+ players & a DM, we can at best average 1 round per week. If the DM is available to post more than once per day, that can get shortened and actual order of the players' turns will cause variance. But, all it takes is a player to have their turn come up 1-2 hours after they went off-line for the night, then if they cannot post the next day for some reason you easily have a 48-hour delay for everyone else. These individual delays add up, so if it takes 36-48 hours per person to update their turn, the next thing you know it takes 2 weeks for 1 round. Not good at all in my opinion. Bottom line on the Group vs. Individual: Group will keep things moving faster without much downside. Individual can provide some interesting tactical considerations and challenges, but can significantly slow things down. With 6+ people, the trade-off is not worth it to me, and the tactical considerations are a part of the game I like best. But wait, someone is bound to think that they don't need to invest in bonuses for Initiative then (i.e. Improved Initiative Feat). Not true, if Initiative is rolled the way I do it (again DM rolling them all). 1. Roll Initiative for every participant individually (even each monster individually). 3. Then average each side for the order between good guys and bad. So high initiative helps your side. 2. Then on the losing side, check the individual rolls. If any rolls beat all of the winning side's rolls then they (and only they) get to act first in Round 1 and then they go again when their losing side goes. So that Rogue with Improved Initiative helps his side win, but if they lose yet he still beats the other side individually, he gets to go first. This is my two cents on the whole deal. If we want to get this combat done in a timely fashion (before 2012 arrives), switch to group Initiative and put a 72 hour time limit on things before the GM NPCs the character for the round. If a player has RL issues, either they post to give permission for the GM to NPC them or the GM posts to tell everyone he will wait.
  9. Yeah, I would say one month is a bit long for trying to do a round of combat. With our track record, people routinely let this game sit fallow for 1-2 weeks for various reasons. Normally I would avoid any game that doesn't have a commitment from all involved to post at least once every 1-2 days. However, Akira is the only Jedi I have left in play anywhere and this is the only RCR game I am in. I don't live on this site or play anything else here, so I don't know what's going on. The last time I tried to push things along, someone got offended when I went out of turn. With my own RL issues (looking for work since I got laid off ) I only come here when I get an email notification, but I am still around.
  10. Not sure how good the NPCs are at Gunnery, but if a non-proficient Attack Bonus of +4 is of benefit, then Akira can do that. Otherwise she can repel boards if that happens and provide color commentary while observing the battle around her.
  11. With the chaos of a space battle being inevitable, Akira stands at Dari's shoulder. Despite not really being proficient in operating starship controls, she is still uncomfortable doing nothing instead. Unless the Empire starts sending out assault transports to be able to board their ship, vigilantly protecting Lady Telana inside her ship appears to be unnecessary. She inquires of the Captain, "How are you situated for gunners, Captain? Though I am not trained properly in their operation, I am fairly decent with a blaster and combat in general. If I can be of use, I offer my services."
  12. It would appear that Akira has too much pride and maybe needs to be ordered around. I will stick with Dari and hope that we get boarded so I have something to do.
  13. Dave, you said the Jedi were on the Jedi ship. I think the Padawans were all accompanying Dari. Are we getting overruled on this or did you just mean Jedi Masters are on the Jedi ship?
  14. Akira continues walking along as before, replying to the droid, "No hurry on that information now, FX. But, if you have the time while we are en route, perhaps a briefing on information you have gathered would be of benefit for Lady Telana and those of us charged with her protection."
  15. Sorry I keep leaving conversation hooks, but I am fine with moving on when you are ready Dave. Stargazer can always answer retroactively or in a flashback or something if desired.
  16. Akira continues to walk along, hands clasped behind her and alert, escorting Dari with the R2 unit beside her. She smiles slightly at Lady Telana's mention of her speaking Binary, but has no chance to reply. After a few moments she says softly to FX, "Beep, boop?... Does that mean anything? I can understand okay, but when I try to talk, I do not think it actually has meaning." The slight smile on her face, reveals that she is likely joking, knowing full well she cannot actually talk in Binary.

Now with a few extra FUs we can probably take a shuttle full of grunt troopers (ie. blaster fodder) if they don't use a butt-load of grenades. This is space opera, right?
  18. Akira looks down at the droid as it starts beeping and whistling at her, "Hey there... I see. Well after this much time passing and the chaos, we could not have expected more, huh?. Good effort and thank you, FX." She mentions what the R2 unit has reported to Dari. Turning back to FX, rolling along beside her, the Padawan explains softly, "We are proceeding with an evacuation, those of us here accompanying Lady Telana. Our destination is Dellalt, have you knowledge of the planet?" She doesn't mention needing an invitation to come along to the droid, assuming it intends to stay with them rolling along beside her. Inwardly she chuckles, Are your bags pack and ready? If it is sentient, does it have possessions and assess its own value? What would a droid consider valuable, anyway? Hmmm, not sure. But other than a twinkling in her eyes, there is no trace of her musings on her expression as she continues to stroll behind Dari being watchful.
  19. Akira rejoins the others and gets some general impressions of moods from the non-Jedi. This causes her to raise an eyebrow with some curiosity, Lady Telana appears to be feeling some of the pressure of leadership, but not letting it hamper her decision making nor resolve. The mixture of emotions, clearly visible on Padawan Hana's face at Dari's slip of the tongue causes Akira to reflect on the young woman a bit later as she glances at her following along as part of Lady Telana's entourage, Too quick to anger possibly. Perhaps her time with the Sith has allowed for her to forget or stray from her teachings. Very well, as we travel together without the watchful eyes of the Masters, I shall endeavor to provide a good example for her to emulate. The soldier's sarcasm is not lost on her either, but she says simply for all to hear, "May the Force be with us." She walks along, hands clasped behind her, glancing around to observe the hustle and bustle of the departure.
  20. No preference from me. But then again I cannot do much in Starship combat except provide color commentary. But if we let them board us with a shuttle full of cannon fodder, different story.
  21. Akira inclines her head in response, a nod of acknowledgement and thanks. "I will meet you at the exit ramp, if you don't mind. I will be just a moment to gather the rest of my belongings." She knows that Dari can handle herself in a conventional fight, but with Sith treachery a possibility, she would rather the noblewoman not leave the ship without her. She turns left and stops by her quarters to collect her few possessions. Tarrying only a few moments, she rejoins the others as they are getting ready to disembark.
  22. Akira stands aside as the Masters file out of the room. Still stoically standing there, she meets Master Uthae's eyes and there was no instructions for her to follow along in the Jedi's gestures. As often the case, the Padawan has learned many of her Master's wishes without words ever being exchanged. She nods in understanding and turns to Dari once the Masters have departed. With a characteristically neutral tone, Akira makes a statement, "Lady Telana, my place is at your side if you will have me." Only a slightly raised eyebrow indicates that it might be a question.
  23. Akira had been walking along and standing protectively behind Dari, assuming her self appointed role as bodyguard over the young leader of the rebellion. So quiet and unobtrusive, the noblewoman likely forgot the Padawan was even there as the events and decisions taking time, her advice and counsel, so far, have not been needed. Following along into the room with the other Jedi and her master, Uthae, Akira observes the situation with a quizzical eyebrow raised as her hands remain clasped behind her. The mention of a Sith in the form of the brazen companion of the young female Padawan refugee finds her looking around the room to gauge the responses and postures of the masters. From their expressions and lack of actions, she realizes that a decision has been made and Akira nods when Master Uthae takes a moment to meet her eyes to ensure the Padawan has a proper reaction to the situation. She voices her opinion at the suggestion of a new location to rendezvous the Alliance, "Sometimes hiding in plain sight where they least expect you is more effective that trying hide in the remote corner farther away."
  24. Hey guys, after flying back to Tokyo I returned to my office Monday only to be laid off. It looks like the natural disaster has put the writing on the wall in my little office and they realize that the SALES people cannot do their job. So they need to reduce costs by cutting the senior engineer (keeping the junior guy that has only been there 3 months). No one every says management is smart. I would have waited a few more months to ensure the junior guy at least could do the job first. Anyway, that's what I get for skipping town under the threat of nuclear disaster. Not sure what that will mean for the future of my gaming, but it has definitely put a damper on my creativity for the near term. I expect that I will actually have less time for playing in the longer term as I don't have my iPhone to keep up on things and cannot spend as much time in front of a computer at home as I could working. I did finally manage to read up on everything IC and will try to post today. As for the OOC, I will say this comment (not having any opinion on the rest of it). Having served aboard a Nimitz Class carrier, I think 2 people could actually drive the thing if the powerplant was already up and running to answer the controls from the bridge. One person drives it steering/throttle controls and another watches where they are going since the helm doesn't have much visibility IIRC. (no side or rear view mirrors ) Basically driving a carrier and driving a small frigate are the same if you don't care what you hit or run over. ,,Originally Posted By: Dari TelanaSlight update in my 2a post, guys - I hadn't realized Layel had been in the hallway w/Dari, I thought he was in the room with the rest of the crew. I've integrated a response to him, and his presence as Dari enters the room, into my post. Sorry I could not throw this out there before, but in the last thread, Akira was accompanying Dari. If you want to add her name in the post somewhere too, that would make sense. But doesn't really matter to me either way since it is already done and read by everyone.
  25. Hey all. In case some of you did not watch the news or forgot, I live in Tokyo, Japan. After the big earthquake and such, I ended up evacuating to the States for for these past several weeks and I am still there. While the game was on pause, I never mentioned this as my difficulties in not being able to post did not matter. But as we kick off again, I cannot continue until things return to normal. I head back home on Saturday/Sunday and likely will have much RL issues to deal with. I should return to a normal schedule by mid-next week. I will try to read up and catch up then. Any help on mentioning where my character is in the current scene(s) will help me catch up faster.
