About the Guest: Rhett Miller After more than two decades as founding member of the venerable Old 97’s and acclaimed singer–songwriter in his own right, Rhett Miller has crafted a trio of new projects that see him pushing his creative energies in hitherto untraveled directions. Among them are two utterly unique new albums – one solo (The Messenger), the other as part of Old 97’s (Love the Holidays) – as well as his first ever book, a collection of subversive kids’ poems called “No More Poems”! Rhett played his first module “tomb of horrors” in 1979. He played throughout high school then took a break for a couple of decades and returned to D&D in his 40s. He’s been dungeon master for a few campaigns in the last half decade and thinks fifth edition is the best ever! Find him on twitter - @rhettmiller, instagram - rhettmiller. Your Podcast Hosts Greg Tito Greg Tito has had weird and long career as an Off Broadway stage manager, a playwright, a theater carpenter, a secretary, an RPG designer, a games journalist, and now a PR/Marketing person. He has loved Dungeons & Dragons ever since 1985 when he found an old copy of the AD&D Dungeon Master’s Guide on his brother’s bookshelf and he honed that love of fantasy storytelling in the dark streets of Sasserine by way of the Upper West Side gaming group he joined in 2004. He moved his family (wife + two young kids) to Seattle in 2015 to work on D&D and he’s never looked back. Twitter: @Gregtito Shelly Mazzanoble Shelly Mazzanoble will always play a magic-user. There. 4. Type: News Author: Shawn Merwin Subtitle: D&D Adventurers League Banner: Text: A new campaign is coming to the D&D Adventurers League, and you could find yourself in the middle of renewed hostilities among the nations of Khorvaire in Eberron! The campaign is called Oracle of War, and it officially launches in December 2019, soon after the release of Eberron: Rising from the Last War. Your Character’s Story In Oracle of War, you play a scavenger, an adventurer who braves the unpredictable and monstrous dangers of the Mournland in the aftermath of the Last War. With your own war experiences still lingering and haunting your memories, you work for rich salvage brokers who pay you to enter the Gray (the locals’ name for ruined Cyre) and track down Cyran artifacts and relics. Everyone has their own reasons for taking on this dangerous work: profit, redemption, guilt, patriotism, revenge, curiosity, or motives more generous or sinister. Whatever the reason or whomever you truly serve in your missions, the danger of the Gray is no less real. Death awaits any who brave the scarred and haunted landscape of the Mournland. The scavengers and salvage brokers make their homes in the town of Salvation on the edge of the Mournland. In this lawless town, successful scavengers need strong wits, nerves of steel, ambition, and a team to watch their backs. Vast fortunes and buried secrets ready to be unearthed await you in the Gray, but so do terrible monsters and lingering magic. The Campaign Oracle of War is administered under the umbrella of the D&D Adventurers League, but is very different type of campaign from what has come before. The story presented in Oracle of War plays out in 20 Core Storyline adventures that take characters from level 1 to 20. After these 20 adventures are released, the campaign is set to conclude, the participants either changing the course of Eberron’s history, or falling victim to the machinations of villains diverse and deadly. Core Storyline adventures are placed on the DMs Guild at the rate of one per month, giving the campaign an active play period of approximately 2 years. At the end of that time, the Adventurers League admins will evaluate and makes plans for whatever comes next! In addition to the Core Storyline adventures, the campaign offers 4 EPIC adventures, one for each tier of play. These EPIC adventures involve multiple tables playing at the same time in a story that highlights tangential plots within the main storyline, making them fun to play but not integral for those who may only wish to play the Core Storyline adventures. Other types of one-off or tangential special adventures may be offered over the course of the two-year campaign, but the Core Storyline adventures are the crux of the campaign. The Oracle of War Player’s Guide and Oracle of War DM’s Guide will be available at the end of October 2019. More details about the campaign, character creation rules, and other details are contained in these guides. Convention Previews While the Core Storyline adventures are released at a monthly pace, Core Storyline adventures are grouped together in series that tell smaller parts of the overall story. These grouped Core Storyline adventures are available at large and medium-sized conventions, along with the accompanying EPIC adventure for that Tier, before they are released on the DMs Guild. For example, GameholeCon in Madison, WI is hosting the first previews of Oracle of War starting on October 31st. All four Tier 1 adventures are available there, along with the Tier 1 Epic adventure. Other conventions that run at least 10 Adventurers League tables in a slot can request previews and the latest EPIC by emailing resource@dndadventurersleague.org with the subject line Eberron Preview. Please keep these requests separate from emails requesting content from the Forgotten Realms campaign. Any convention that offers an EPIC during the preview period must also offer the other available Core Storyline adventures that accompanies the EPIC for that Tier. If your convention requests the EPIC and the preview Core Storyline adventures for a Tier, please provide information about your convention that verifies your convention is running the proper number of tables to qualify. The Team The Oracle of War campaign is presented by the Eberron AL Admins—Will Doyle, Amy Lynn Dzura, and Shawn Merwin—under the leadership of Chris Lindsay of Wizards of the Coast. Will Doyle is the Story Manager, guiding the overall story of the campaign and making sure the adventurers are up to the standard of the Adventures League. Will is a veteran storyteller and a mainstay in the Adventurers League, having written many of AL’s most popular and well-loved adventures and EPICs. Amy Lynn Dzura is the Community Manager, making sure the players and DMs have the latest information and a clear line of communication about the campaign. Amy takes on this position in addition to her similar role for the rest of the Adventurers League programs. Shawn Merwin is the Resource Manager, overseeing behind-the-scenes tasks and making sure the lightning rail runs on time. Shawn has worked on several organized play programs for Wizards of the Coast. The Launch The first four adventures span Tier 1 of the campaign. At GameholeCon 2019, which takes place before the release of the Eberron book, players can use pregenerated characters provided. Alternatively, they can create characters using the Player’s Handbook or Basic rules. Special character sheets will also be available containing the information needed to create characters using the player options of Eberron: Rising from the Last War. Here are the details for the first four Core Storyline adventures: DDAL-EB-01 The Night Land by Shawn Merwin The brokers of Salvation pay good coin for artifacts scavenged from the haunted battlefields of the Mournland. In this nest of cutthroats, daring explorers gather to carve their destinies from the ruins of Cyre. They’ll need all the help they can get: it’s no secret that most scavengers don’t survive their first expedition into the Gray. A Four-Hour Adventure for Tier 1 Characters. Optimized for APL 1. DDAL-EB-02 Voice in the Machine by Will Doyle The adventurers head deep into the Mournland to rescue a missing salvage team. In the heat of battle, they unearth a strange device from the ruins: The Oracle of War. This machine knows all the secrets they need to overcome their enemies – if only the adventurers can figure out how to operate it! A Four-Hour Adventure for Tier 1 Characters. Optimized for APL 2. DDAL-EB-03 Where the Dead Wait by James Introcaso On their way back to Salvation, the adventurers are ambushed by a large force of undead and forced to seek shelter in a ruined cottage. As the dead close in from all sides, the survivors turn to the Oracle of War for a lifeline. Only this time, things don’t play out as expected... A Four-Hour Adventure for Tier 1 Characters. Optimized for APL 3 DDAL-EB-04 The Third Protocol by MT Black The Oracle of War has been recovered from the Mournland. Its creators respond by activating the third protocol, an instruction to recover the device and eliminate all who know of its existence. As night falls, a posse of assassins step off the lightning rail with orders to raze Salvation to the ground and retrieve the Oracle. A Four-Hour Adventure for Tier 1 Characters. Optimized for APL 4. 5. Type: Unearthed Arcana Author: Ben Petrisor, Dan Dillon, and Jeremy Crawford, with F. Wesley Schneider Subtitle: Unearthed Arcana Banner: Text: Fighter, Ranger, and Rogue In today’s Unearthed Arcana, three classes each receive a playtest option. The fighter gets a Martial Archetype option: the Rune Knight. The ranger gains a Ranger Archetype option: the Swarmkeeper. And the rogue acquires a Roguish Archetype option: the Revived. We invite you to give these subclasses a look, try them in play, and let us know what you think in an upcoming survey on this website. Survey A survey is also now available on our previous Unearthed Arcana, which presents the Twilight Domain for the cleric, the Circle of Wildfire for the druid, and Onomancy for the wizard. Please follow the survey link to let us know what you think about them! This Is Playtest Content The material in Unearthed Arcana is presented for playtesting and to spark your imagination. These game mechanics are in draft form, usable in your D&D campaign but not refined by final game design. They are not officially part of the game. For these reasons, material in this column is not legal in D&D Adventurers League events. 7. Yes, we’re down to the last few days of the Deviant: The Renegades Kickstarter campaign, and backers have been talking full-time with developer Eric Zawadzki about all the options contained in the previews AND in the Stretch Goal projects. It’s been really great seeing folks come up with how popular (and unpopular, for that matter) characters in various media can be replicated in Deviant. There’s been a ton of them, and it’s just awesome how flexible the character creation section is! Dave Brookshaw’s extensive process and playtesting is really paying off with a system that absolutely shines. So, c’mon! Check it out while we’re still rolling and if you pledge you’ll be getting those sweet Stretch Goal projects as well as Deviant itself with your pledge! And while Deviant is the last KS standing right now, our joint Creature Collection KS with Handiwork Games ended over the weekend with a satisfying amount that’s over 400% our funding amount, a great number of backers, and a fantastic 224 pages (we started with 160). A huge round of thanks and appreciation to Handiwork and Jon and all his team over there! It is really one sweet project they put together – and even before the KS was over they had hired new writers and artists to start on the added sections. Our Creature Collection is in good hand(s) – iwork. OK, even I think that’s a groaner, but I wrote it and it’s staying in as I gotta move on to the next topic! They Came From Beneath the Sea! art by Brian Leblanc Over the weekend, I also attended the SAVE convention in Harrisburg, PA. Not only was I joined by Eddy and Dixie, but surprise guest Neall Raemonn Price showed up! He was able to join us on panels, and we had a lot, I mean A LOT, of discussion of upcoming projects – tons of Scion talk, but also a couple of upcoming and currently secret projects. SAVE itself was bigger than ever, and Saturday it was packed in the gaming area. Even more interesting to me, was the education and therapy tracks (as opposed to the game design and gaming ones I was in), because these were also packed with folks wanting to discuss and learn about how our hobby can be used to build understanding and help with therapeutic efforts. What a fantastic place we are now in where we don’t have to only mention those anecdotal stories of roleplaying helping folks in their real lives, we now have real, practicing therapists and educators stepping up with methodologies. Very proud of my friends in the Bodhana Group for being forerunners in this effort! On a personal gaming level, Friday night at the convention I stepped up and DM’d my long-time D&D world for the first time for adults in about thirty years. I just felt like if we’re publishing so many D&D 5e based game lines, I needed to be able to talk about them with experience, not just from playing a few campaigns. So I girded my loins, converted an adventure I’d written that was published in White Wolf Magazine #15, and sat down with Eddy, Dixie, Neall, and Jen, Jack, and the Captain, from Bodhana. It was extremely fun, and very satisfying – even if we roleplayed so hard the party never actually got into the dungeon part! They did however talk themselves into a free room at a very nice inn due to some high charisma dice rolling and simple chicanery, burn up two enemies and part of a pine forest, and team-work the hell out of young Frost Giant. I’ve received a fair number of requests to continue the game, so that’s a good sign, and I’ll just have to see what I can do. Dunno if I’ve shaken off all the rust from decades of not running a game, but I also hate saying no to people who want to join me in my imaginary world. So…. Aeon Aexpansion art by Gong Studios Last week also saw the release to the public of one of our secret projects: the phone app version of Pugmire! The folks at DTRPG used Pugmire as their first premiere project and worked up an awesome version of the core book, that they then offered as a free download – and I understand that they’ve had over 7,000 of those downloads! Here’s a direct link: https://phone.drivethrurpg.com/phone-pdf/?affiliate_id=4451 There’s are also some great games from other publishers on there, and we have at least one more project to add – again, one of the things we’ve been doing behind the scenes – you’d be surprised at how many of those are bubbling along right now! Now for some useful sales info! First, DTRPG is having their big Halloween Sale on DriveThruRPG and Storytellers Vault starting Wednesday the 16th and running until Halloween. Most of our Chronicles of Darkness PDFs will be on sale on both sites, plus there will be some Halloween Treats (i.e. free PDFs) hidden around the sites. Here’s a link to a teaser for a Geist 2e game being run by Eric Campbell: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GOzzE8b3Wc Here’s a link to this very cool Scion teaser announcing the project is being translated and published in Spain by The Hills Press! We think it’s an excellent video, a super teaser, and we just couldn’t be happier to be working with these folks! Maybe the next line should be “Many Teasers, One Path”… maybe not. Let’s stick with: Many Worlds, One Path! BLURBS! Kickstarter! The Deviant: The Renegades Kickstarter has ONLY A FEW MORE DAYS to go and it’s vengefully slamming through Stretch Goals now! So far, we have the classic Backer T-Shirt, unlocked the Deviant Screen and Deviant wallpaper, added the Beast and Demon core book PDFs and Dark Eras PDFs to the CofD PDF collection, and added four sections of the Clades Companion book! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/200664283/deviant-the-renegades-a-tabletop-roleplaying-game Next up: Mummy: The Curse 2nd Edition! 8. DriveThruRPG.com announced this week that the Phone PDF, a new format designed specifically for handheld mobile devices, is now available. At the RPG gaming table, while game masters are likely to have a laptop or tablet nearby, an increasingly large number of gamers use their phones for quick reference. Typical game manuals and comic books in standard PDF format use the same page size and pagination as printed hard copy editions. That format works well on tablets and monitors, but normal PDFs are not well suited to phone-sized screens. In early 2019, DriveThruRPG worked closely with Onyx Path Publishing to create the Pugmire Phone PDF – which you can download FREE today! According to Onyx Path developer Monica Valentinelli, the Pugmire phone PDF format is 720 pages long and includes quick links on every page for ease of use. In addition to the Table of Contents, for example, added section menus allow for ways to reference rules and other important information necessary to play the game. Curious about Phone PDFs? Visit DriveThruRPG’s Customer Knowledge Base to learn more about Phone PDFs, including recommended Apps for phones and other information. Are you one of the many Onyx Path Publishing community content creators active on Canis Minor, Slarecian Vault, or StoryPath Nexus? If you’d like to convert your book to the phone PDF format, visit DriveThruRPG’s Publisher Knowledge Base for more information. Have you downloaded your free copy of the Pugmire Phone PDF? 11. Designing the callings for Pugmire, Monarchies of Mau, and Pirates of Pugmire was an interesting challenge. My goal with the games was to be a nostalgic reinvention of classic fantasy gaming, so some form of “class” was necessary. But I also wanted them to be evocative of this new world I was creating. Early on, I decided a couple ground rules: Each calling would key off two attributes. It would have been easy to tie each calling to one primary attribute, but I felt two gave each calling more depth. Since tricks are picked and refined by player choice instead of a built-in progression, it meant that following one of two rough “paths” could lead to different expressions of the same core calling idea. I wanted six in each core rulebook. Not only did this pair well with the six attributes, but six is generally the number of players I have in my games. I wanted each player to have the opportunity to play something cool. Let’s look at how well I did! Pugmire was the first book, and at the time possibly the only book, so I had to get the core concepts down the first time. Artisans (Charisma and Intelligence): One of the more radical callings in the book, I wanted magic users that were more like a blend of charismatic sorcerers and classic mages. I felt the stereotype of the “loner magician” worked better for cats, so even though I wasn’t 100% sure I would ever do a cat game, I still wanted the dogs to have something different. Guardians (Charisma and Strength): I struggled with this for a while. Originally they were going to be more like paladins, but that felt too close to Shepherds. Then I was going to make them a lot like generic warriors, but that actually got too close in gameplay to Strays. I settled on charismatic warriors: warlords, leaders, and ideologues. That felt more like a “guardian” to me. Hunters (Dexterity and Wisdom): Hunters were one of the first callings I knew right away how they would be structured. I definitely wanted room for dogs that travel in the woods and hunt things, although I tweaked the flavor to “hunt monsters” to make them more explicitly heroic. They’re really close to rangers, but in this case it worked so well I didn’t mess with the formula much. Ratters (Constitution and Dexterity): This one I probably fiddled with the longest. I struggled to figure out how “thief” worked in the setting I was building. It wasn’t until I stumbled on the concept of rat-hunting dogs and merged that with a kind of Gray Mouser antihero that I was able to nail this down. But even then, I wanted these to be hardier than the average thief, which is why I swapped Constitution in. It’s definitely a calling that feels stereotypical at first, but you find the depth and nuance as you play it. Shepherds (Intelligence and Wisdom): This was another calling that I knew pretty might right away how I wanted it to land. It’s a monotheistic cleric, essentially, with a dash of magical knowledge. I gave them a little more combat capacity, since I took away the “paladin bits” from Guardians, but otherwise they were easy to work out. Strays (Constitution and Strength): This one had a good concept right away (although they had the name “pariahs” for a long time), but it evolved as I worked on the game design. Mechanically it fills the needed role of strong, tough warrior that the callings needed, but most of the other tricks were geared around helping other dogs in the party. Thematically, strays help themselves, so it took a while to make the mechanics work so the gameplay of the calling still landed right, but they still had incentives to help the rest of the party out. Next time, I’ll go into Monarchies of Mau! View the full article

  13. Anticipating Mummy: The Curse 2nd Edition? We’ve included the upcoming edition in Dark Eras 2. In the Rise of the Last Imperials chapter, we’ve offered sample cults which are included in the Mummy: The Curse portion. The text details three sample cults mummies may rely on on — and hunters might encounter. Here’s a sneak preview of The Wang. Example Cults: The Wang “Civilization is in danger, father. We must restore it, whatever the cost. If I thought else, would I be your daughter?” — Wang Ming-Yue A family, the Wang, close to the Imperial Court in Beijing is contacted by sympathetic traders on the Silk Road. They have sacrificed much to maintain a position as a power behind the throne while the Ming were in control. Now they have been forced to sacrifice even more to appease the new emperor’s courtiers and to sop to his oafish, childish decrees. The promise of a new dawn and a new seat of power calls to them while the offer of aid from a family who are near to enjoying the Eight Privileges of the Imperial Court, such is their station, provides the perfect platform for the first of the Deathless to move. Wang Ming-Yue is the only daughter of Wang Qiang, Prince of the Imperial Court and one of the chief defectors from the Ming to the Shunzhi Emperor. She has enjoyed a full education in the Three Obediences and the Four Virtues as befits a noble lady of her rank. She has been taught to read and write, as well as to ride. In her upbringing, where she held her father in great esteem, she also learned his nous for politics and statecraft. To preserve their family’s station, Qiang agrees for her to be married to a Banner Lord named Guroro, an uncouth, soldierly general who is impressed by her beauty and refinement, though she is less impressed by his rudeness and brutish ways. Though this match is by no means perfect for her, she takes full advantage of it. Her place as first wife gives her great influence over the household of a man close to the emperor and he is more than happy for her to, very discreetly, manage his political and domestic affairs. She further impresses him by practicing archery with him. With her father, she joins the cult of Rahush, the mummy that has been transposed into Qiang’s chief advisor. They have brought many of the household into the fold and scour the records of imperial trades for any record of the talismans their benefactor seeks. The house guards and some of the more loyal servants have all been inducted into the cult. Though their position permits them a certain luxury, it is also one of some danger. If the emperor or Qiang’s political rivals became aware that they are practicing weird rituals in secret, it could expose the entire family. This is made all the more of a threat with the priest Herakon, who transported the heart of Rahush to China, living among them. His strange ways may be entertaining for a while but keeping him around the estate for extended periods of time is highly suspicious. View the full article
  14. Here we are, coming to the last few days of the Creature Collection for 5e Scarred Lands Kickstarter, and the last 9 days of the Kickstarter for Deviant: The Renegade. Wow, the time sure flies with these – you can check out below in the Blurbs for details on how everyone’s pledges have added to both projects in different ways. That’s really a huge part of the fun for us – using KS to help create more and new parts to a project! Not something you can really do with a standard pre-order. Thanks everybody who already pledged – and if you haven’t yet, you really do owe it to yourself to take a look. Both campaigns have a huge amount of backer activity and involvement, and have great KS-runners. Next up, we’re looking at Mummy 2nd Edition for the just inaugurated Onyx Path Kickstarter account that Creature Collection is on right now, so we’re really going to need to get our previous backers to give that a try and pop over there. Not the easiest shift to make! Dark Eras 2 art by Luis Sanz At the end of the week, Dixie, Eddy, and myself (and maybe a surprise Onyx Path creator or two) will be attending the Save Against Fear Convention in Harrisburg, PA, that benefits the Bodhana Group. These folks are a non-profit group that believes that tabletop gaming can have therapeutic value – and as many of them are licensed to provide therapeutic assistance, as well as being long-time table-top gamers, they know what they’re talking about. While there are numerous therapy panels, this is very much a gaming convention with a busy gaming area and panels about making table-top games, as well. If you can stop by, it’s a lot of fun – and the proceeds go to a worthy cause! You can check it out here: https://www.thebodhanagroup.org/about-the-convention Eddy will be running Pirates Of Pugmire at 6pm on both Friday and Saturday nights, all three of us will be on a World-Building panel on Saturday at 1pm, and we might be able to squeeze in a recording an episode of the Onyx Pathcast at the con. Distant Worlds art by Sam Denmark Funny I should just mention the Onyx Pathcast, as I want to remind everybody that the first live call-in show will be Tuesday October 8th at 5pm Eastern US time! Why that’s tomorrow! Call in and give the terrifying yet terrific trio a piece of your mind! Cause an awkward silence so Dixie can sing the Awkward Silence Song, or give the gang your opinion on something so Matthew can interrupt you mid-way! We’d all love to hear from you, no matter which of our game lines you’re into, or even if you’re into all of our: Many Worlds, One Path! BLURBS! Kickstarter! Our Creature Collection Kickstarter for Scarred Lands 5e is scampering towards the next Stretch Goal to add more monsters – that the backers vote on – to the book! Over 20 pages of new monsters have been added so far, and an Encounter Pack giving players a place to use some of our collected creatures – the book is now 184 pages but we want to hit 196 at least – here in the last 4 days! The Deviant: The Renegades Kickstarter has a little more than a week to go and it’s vengefully slamming through Stretch Goals now! So far, we have the classic Backer T-Shirt, unlocked the Deviant Screen, added the Beast core book and Dark Eras PDFs to the CofD PDF collection, and added three sections of the Clades Companion book! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/200664283/deviant-the-renegades-a-tabletop-roleplaying-game Onyx Path Media! He was part of the awful season on Saturday Night Live (1980-1981) right after Lorne Michaels left, and we commemorate him because he was by all accounts the first person to “drop the f-bomb” clearly on American TV. He was, of course for the time, fired immediately. We here at Onyx Path, who believe in the magic of all words, not just polite ones, to tell our stories, salute this trailblazer who gave his all for the cause.
