Trinity Universe: Carbon Shadows: OOC

As you can see, I came up with a title. So the hard part is done... ::wink To repeat myself:

The Setting: Starting point Lisbon. City of Sin, where anything can be bought or sold for the right price. It probably won't be a globetrotting story (in the beginning, at least), and most of the action will take place in Western Europe.

The Characters: Sailors, dock workers, street girls (or boys), mercs, war veterans, thieves, investigators, swindlers, ex-cons, black-ops people and other characters with negotiable morals. No psions. All down on their luck and looking for a job. Not the best at what they do.

The Story: Industrial espionage and counter-espionage, cutting edge tech worth dying for - or killing a whole lot of other poor bastards for...

The Opposition: Law enforcement, the Trinity, competing market interests of varying morals.

The Mood: Gritty, dirty, dog-eat-dog, there's-always-a-bigger-fish sci-fi.

The Rules: PG rules for neutrals. No Status or Influence. Resources, Mentor and Device max 3. No Allies or Contacts 'of immense power'. Merits & Flaws: Maybe. Some flaws are cool and may be allowed. Flaws like Short, Speech Impediment, Deaf, Blind, Colorblind and whatnot are plain stupid and are there just for the points. They will not be allowed, obviously. Same goes for Merits. I'm not going to give a point min/max on this, but rather make case-by-case decisions.

Morals:The characters have to be willing to break the law, and have probably done so on several occasions. Alternatively, they're in a tight spot, and a life of crime seems like the best way out. I'm not saying I want a team of psychos or stone cold killers, just people who won't get shocked if the boss asks them to rob a bank.

Skills:The characters have to have some relevant skills, be they as a hitman/soldier, intrusion specialist, hacker, con man, undercover agent or the like. They don't necessarily have to have experience in using them for criminal purposes. If you make a character with expert-high scores in his focus skills, make sure you also make up the reason why he hasn't got a job already. None of the characters should be completely useless in a combat situation.

The Job:For whatever reason you come up with, the character needs the money, security and backing an employer can provide, and is willing to pay the price for it. They're all joining up with an outfit for a future, not for a specific job.

So far I've heard expressions of interest from Prince of Boredom, phoenix, ConcreteDragon, Heritage and ezekiel (or at least future interest ::wink ) Do you have any ideas on characters?

I'm thinking a 'down on his luck' / 'out of work' ex-cop. He had a wonderful life, great family; then was caught cheating on his wife and was found to be 'on the take' and kicked off the force. He has no formal education and his life is completely gone. So what does someone with nothing to lose, whose only useful skills are investigation and weapons training have to do...?

Does that seem to fit your mood/theme?

Damn, Prince ::rolleyes you took my 'Private Dick' bit.

Now I'll have to become a Pimp who's lost his 'Stable' and needs to afford some new phillies ::wink . He'll have a large number of Contacts (re: former clients) who will donate Information (with the help of some blackmail and persuasion).

Two questions, though. Are we using the 'regular' creation rules (pg. 168) or the 'Normal human' creation rules (pg. 169)? (Oops, just reread the text above. I think #2 is the answer)

Do the 'fighting gloves' (pg. 261) use the Brawl or the Melee skill? ::wacko

Contacts are cool, but that shouldn't be your character's main theme. He needs to be useful on his own as well... ::wink

None of the above. They gave players of neutrals and latents a few more points to play with in the Players Guide, and that's what we'll be using. For those of you that don't have it:

Attributes: 6/4/3

Abilities: 12 (ability group) + 15

Backgrounds: 7

Psi: 1 (2 for latents)

Willpower: 3 (4 for latents)

Bonus Points: 21 (15 for latents)

Do the 'fighting gloves' (pg. 261) use the Brawl or the Melee skill? ::wacko
Brawl or Martial Arts.

Asbjorn: Sorry I've been slacking off on this - I've been up in Quebec City for an international band competition. And also sorry, but I'm going to continue to do so for the rest of this week, since I'll be visiting a college. I'll hopefully get you a character after that.

Phoenix...you soooooo should've told me! I would've told you EXACTLY where to go out!

D'oh! That would have come in handy.. On the advice of the hotel owner, we ended up going out and paying $25+ for dinner! ::wacko

Awesome city, though, huh? ::cool

Is it just the general slowdown, or are there unanswered questions keeping you...? Feel free to ask detailed or general questions if there's anything you think is vague here...

Maybe an introductory story post or two is in order... ::cool

Yep. Still open. Make up a character idea based on the guidelines above, and say something about it here. Then - provided it's ok with me - you do the technical stuff, PM it to me, and after a little communication, we're in business.

So... Any ideas?

Several depending on what really makes sense:

a young kid (18-19) who runs drugs - not a dealer, just a delivery guy w/ a fast bike who is kind of an adrenaline junkie - ok physical, great driver

a college drop-out who works as a bouncer in the seedy part of town - muscle

a formerly high powered attorney who was caught hacking into secure government sites to get information which he then used to bribe judges to get his clients off - he got caught and is on the run (formerly based in another city - whichever you prefer) - hacker/talker

Do any of those sound in line with what you would want?

let me know :)

Sounds like a good concept for a guy who wants to make a career. Young, eager, self-confident. Could work out fine.

Just remember that there's no such thing as an illegal drug in Lisbon, so he really would be just a delivery guy, except with pretty expensive packages.

a college drop-out who works as a bouncer in the seedy part of town - muscle

Depends on motivation, but seems like the kind of character who'd have to get pulled in. Would work out fine, though. This is more along the combat line, since being a doorman in Lisbon isn't all fun and games.

a formerly high powered attorney who was caught hacking into secure government sites to get information which he then used to bribe judges to get his clients off - he got caught and is on the run (formerly based in another city - whichever you prefer) - hacker/talker

There's two problems with this concept. First, he's got enemies, and second, he's already proved he's got no respect for secrets. I see looming trust issues in the future with this one... On the other hand, a decent hacker is a handy guy to have along. It could work, but expect to be kept on a short leash.

Got it ... I'll lean towards #1 then I guess :)

Is there any kind of contraband in the city? Makes him "seedier". If he just runs expensive items - he is basically like the guys on bikes in New York City -- granted that isn't a bad concept ...

I'll start writing him up ... btw - what is the current "player roster" ?

Well... the only commodity that is illegal is WMD's, including nuclear, biological or chemical weapons on any scale, and I don't think that sort of thing is regularly transported...

However, there's also a general restriction on advanced (i.e military grade) weapons, which means there's a certain business in transporting such goods. In addition, there are a lot of organizations that would be classified as organized crime elsewhere in the world that are doing 'legit' business in Lisbon, and they don't change their MO significantly even if their goods happen to be legal. Consequently, there are occasional hijackings of goods, and reliable couriers for important deliveries are an important asset for most groups and organizations.

So, yeah. Basically a delivery boy, but with the added bonus of getting shot at now and then... ::wink

As for the roster, this thread says it all. Haven't received any sheets yet, but I figured I might light a little enthusiasm with the first post.

Is this an accurate listing:

Prince of Boredom: Disgraced cop caught cheating

Concrete Dragon: Pimp w/ an empty "stable"

Heritage: Disgraced surgeon

schreier: delivery kid

If so - are there any pre-existing associations?

I think I am going w/ military grade weapons running if that is ok? mostly small, easily concealed weapons.

I'll write something up tonight :)

Just to let everyone know: My avatar is actually the picture that I am basing the character on - if that helps people visualize him. He is 19 years old, just at 6' even and probably 170lbs or so. He moves very gracefully, almost like an elf. At the same time - he seems to be almost constantly moving.

He has brown hair (as the picture), generally wears a long leather overcoat.

As you may or may not have noticed, I'm experimenting a little with the storytelling style here. Paragraphs in italics are meant as the voice of Martelo telling his version of the story to an unspecified listener some time in the future. So far I think that is pretty easy to separate from the normal, present tense descriptions, but it might get more confusing in the future.

It's an experiment, so I'd welcome feedback on how you think it works, and how it could be improved...

Looks pretty cool so far. Not sure how much of that is the experiment and how much is your good storytelling, though. ::cool

Romeo - pretty boy gypsy

Just for the record, Romeo is (A) actually fairly masculine, sorry if that didn't come across in my post, and (B) not actually a Gypsy - I just said he had a Gypsyish air to him. Not to nitpick or anything. ::tongue

Also, as long as I'm nitpicking, can we try to keep the IC stuff reasonably well punctuated and in narrative format? Not trying to pick on you, Schreier, you're just the first person I noticed do it. ::cool ::unsure

I appreciate the input :)

I honestly was going for more of a stream of consciousness post, but I will try and keep more accurate punctuation

As far as the gypsy comment: those were just his first impressions. He doesn't know anything more than what he has just seen. That is why he thought of the cop as mafia since that is what he looks like.

anyways, here's hoping the game goes well :)

Just want to make sure about one thing, since your posts seem to imply different views on the subject: This is not the first meeting each of you have with someone from Silverstone's organization. You've already been through an interview, had a few skills tested - some in a virtual environment, been through a few medical scans and a chemical lie-detector test before finally being told Silverstone wants you in. Then you've been told to go see Martelo.

All but Prince's character have talked with Martelo about this before. Prince has had someone do the talking for him... ::wink

You haven't actually met Silverstone himself yet - he's kind of an elusive figure - but have met a handful of nameless assistants and medical personell, all under the supervision of a surprisingly mild-mannered woman in her forties named Aurelia Ferreira.

Just to avoid confusion and make sure you all know that Martelo isn't selling you anything. You've already bought it.

But how the hell he'd ever fit a gun into that trumpet of his I'll never know...

::mellow Not that I've done this, but you could fit a gun in a trumpet case. ::wink

I don't know what you're waiting for... ::tongue Personally I'm waiting for a few more hours to the day, one or two more characters, and most of all a rl - or really another alternate reality - deadline to get off my back some time this weekend. The regularly scheduled posting will resume soon!

I'm just not having any luck w/ Jax's understanding of the situations :)  Empty garage - not near the exit, ignoring the people having sex .... maybe I inhaled something in the club? :)

::biggrin

Maybe you did... They're not all misunderstandings, though. You've got one case of assumption in there too, and those are easier to avoid. If I haven't described a scene yet - such as the garage - it's probably a good idea to not assume too much about it.

As for misunderstandings... there will always be some. Just make sure you read my posts properly, cause the information you're looking for just might be there... ::wink

So, Schreier... Do you have any thoughts on what might be going on between these two posts? Would you like to share them with the rest of us?

As he heads back to his chosen vehicle from his short round, a blue-haired girl - possibly younger than Jax - dressed in a short skirt and revealing top of some sort of crystalline, semi-transparent material and obviously high on pearl suddenly throws herself at him, wrapping her arms around him and covering his neck and mouth with hungry kisses.
Jax downloads the images and decides to seek it out.  He puts the pistol under the drivers seat and steps out of the car to look for the vehicle.  He sends back "I'll find it and then confirm with you."

Some of my posts might seem trivial to you - and not all of them are equally important to the overall story - but that doesn't mean you get to ignore them or make up your own outcome of a situation. After all, I'm pretty sure you don't want me to ignore your posts, do you?

I'm not dead, guys...

And no, I'm not really waiting for Schreier to fix his continuity-bummer either. I've just had a lot to do the last month, and Murphy stole my internet connection. Back now, though, and we'll be back to our regular schedule in a few days. There will be at least one more downperiod this fall, but don't panic. I'll let you all know when I disappear...
