Aberrant: Quantum Zero - Nippontai High OOC

Mad - that's what I am... & you all know it! ::wacko

In any case, this idea's been floating around my head for a bit now, & needed to burst free - so here it is, let's see if there's any interest.

The Osaka Academy for Gifted Children is a government-funded high school located in Osaka, Japan, run under the auspices of the Nippontai project. Publically it is a school for children with gifts - child prodigies & the like. However, it is an open secret that some of these children's gifts are actually Nova powers - hence the school's better known nickname - Nippontai High. The kids who attend the school may well be the next generation of Nippontai Novas.

As a country Japan is on the cutting edge of the Nova age. It pays only lip-service to Project Utopia's restrictions on Nova-invented technologies &, thanks (at least in part) to the Kamisama Buddhist movement, its people close to worship Novas as heroes & saviours. Nippontai is the country's official response to all matters Nova-related. With a public headquarters in Tokyo, & a more extensive living & working facility in Osaka castle, Nippontai is Japan's Nova-culture given voice.

What is less well known is that Japan has a much higher rate of eruptions than a country of its population should, statistically, have - & most of these eruptions are amongst the young - teenagers especially. Some look to the presence of Bodhisattva Masato - the powerful genius Nova who helped develop Japan's radical new power sources, & founded the Kamisama movement - as the cause. Masato is credited with the ability to cause others to erupt, although many refuse to believe these claims. Others look to the radiation which bathed the islands at the end of World War Two, to the self-same power sources which Masato helped invent, to Nova-tech gone out of control, or even to the spiritual heart of a deeply traditional people. None knows for sure, but the fact remains that, as far as Novas go, Japan has more than its fair share.

Players in this game would take the roles of young Japanese teenagers (fifteen to sixteen years old) attending Nippontai High - either newly erupted Novas, or 'prodigies' who have tested positive for Nova potential. The series feel & atmosphere would aim to be along the lines of Japanese high-school based Manga & Animé - a mix of teenage romance & super-powered action. The Aberrant equivilent of Sailor Moon, if you like. It'd be set in the Quantum Zero world, although, by nature of the setting, somewhat removed from some of the darker elements which have reared their heads in that series.

Player characters would be attending a Japanese High School - along with appropriate uniforms, duties, & expectations - & expected to role-play the parts with that in mind. Characters would worry about exams, & dating, & how to hold down a part-time job without the school finding out, rather than using their powers to skip such 'mundane' aspects of life (as some Nova characters in other games might be tempted to do). Powers would be generally low-level (at least to start with - building to the more Earth-shattering stuff as time goes on). There would be 'bad guys' to fight, but also High School rivals to face & romantic crushes to develop. Verbal 'activation phrases' for powers (especially Maxed powers) would be the order of the day... ::wink

Like the Manga & Animé influences it'd be based on, such a game would focus a lot on character, emotion, & conflict - the value of friendship & honour, the trials of love, the temptations of evil, & the like - rather than the less ephemeral goals which some games have (kill bad guys, get money, increase power, & the like).

I've got more to say on this whole thing, but I think I'll stop there to see if there's any interest at all. ::lookaround

Some interest then - cool. ::biggrin

Totally count me in if it's ST system!

Yep - anything QZ-related will be using the Storyteller rules.

I assume that it's standard character creation rules?

There'll be some changes & / or limits to the usual rules to reflect who the characters are & where the setting is (mostly changes on how Backgrounds are applied) - I'll post them some time.

Just sit tight, Prof. Some nice men in white coats will be along pretty soon, to take you on a holiday. You'll have your own nice little room in a wonderfully quiet and peaceful hotel, and everything will be allright... Won't that be nice...?

Seriously, though: This sounds strangely familiar. I had thoughts about a similar basis for an abbie story, but ended up doing it werewolf-style in stead - as some of you know. I've been ST'ing a group of superhuman teenagers for a year or so now, and it would be cool to see that kind of story from a player's perspective. Count me in! ::thumbsup

Since you're setting this in QZ, we'd all know and hate Gravitoman, right? And have posters of the Samurai in our rooms...? ::biggrin

Yesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyes.

Yes.

I was thinking of a character called "Illusion." Invisibility, Hypnosis, Mirage, Holo, moving on to stronger mental powers. Mega-Social atts (mostly Manipulation)

Mega-Socials, Hypnosis and Invisibility in a high school. I just realised it's like some creepy erotic story come to life. Rest assured, I had the idea for Illusion long before I heard the idea for this story.

What does "Low level" mean? A lower level of Q? Mega-Stats?

I'm thinking something along the lines of starting characters off with ten Nova Points, & adding another ten each school year (so they graduate with the full thirty). I'm also likely to limit certain Mega-Attributes as well (one high-level Mega-Social could mess up the whole game concept, for example). On the other hand there shouldn't be any problems with high levels of raw power (i.e. Quantum) & the like - characters from the genre often possess awesome raw power, but lack the training & skill to use it properly.

Taint & aberrations will be limited - characters need the ability to blend in with the general populace to a certain extent - although this can be offset by a generous application of Dormancy (the 'duel-form' theme being another genre classic).

Since you're setting this in QZ, we'd all know and hate Gravitoman, right? And have posters of the Samurai in our rooms...?

Yep - that's the idea. Plus, long-time QZ readers may recognise one of the PCs classmates... ::wink

For chargen:

Phase One will generally be as per normal - the pupils are all meant to be exceptional or prodigys, & their full array of Attributes & Abilities will reflect that.

Some Abilities will be limited - Firearms should be a rare Ability in Japan as a whole, & even rarer amongst High School kids, for example.

Other Abilities will be required (although not 'free' - they need to be allocated out of the character's starting Ability dots) - these represent the fact that Japanese High School kids need to pass certain exams to even get into the school - & the exams of Nippontai High are some of the toughest there are. The subjects usually tested are: Japanese, maths, science, social studies, & English. In Aberrant terms that means each character needs a minimum of one dot in: Academics, Linguistics (English), & Science.

The core curriculum followed includes the tested subjects of maths, social studies, Japanese, science, & English as well as physical education, music, art & moral studies. There are few electives available, but every pupil will be a member of an extracurricular club (usually just one each) - either a sports club (baseball, soccer, judo, kendo, track, tennis, swimming, softball, volleyball, rugby, archery, etc.), or a culture club (English, broadcasting, calligraphy, science, maths, yearbook, etc.). These studies & clubs are taken much more seriously than in many Western societies. A character will need to have at least one dot's worth of Ability to represent particular club interests (a good excuse for those Martial Arts dots, right? ::wink ).

School is open each weekday & for a half-day on Saturdays, & extracurricular clubs run for two hours after school each day (& often in the holidays as well). Homework takes up about two hours each weekday, & three hours on Sundays (barring appropriate Mega-Attributes ::wink ).

School uniform is a dark blue high-collared suit for boys, & a 'sailor-suit' with a dark blue skirt for girls.

School rules include a ban on students dating, a ban on holding part-time jobs, & (where relevant) a ban on flaunting Nova powers in public. Pupils' activities reflect on the school as a whole, & the school's authority (unlike some Western schools) doesn't stop at the front gate - getting caught breaking the rules outside of school is a bad thing.

Pupils will live with their families (if they happen to live in the Osaka area) or with relatives or friends of the family. Pupils lacking any of these options are left to board at the Osaka castle facility - which is a lot less fun than it might sound (Japanese High School kids get little free time & privacy as it is - being stuck in a government run dormatory reduces that to near-zero).

Backgrounds reflect the setting as follows:

Allies are best friends, siblings of similar age, & the like. Generally they're not gonna' be super-powerful Novas - although fellow pupils (NPCs) are fine.

Attunement is unchanged.

Backing reflects the character's 'rank' within the school:

* a position of responsibility within an extracurricular club

** a member of a club's leadership

*** the president of a club (or captain of a sports team)

**** class president

***** class president with the ear of the teaching staff

Cipher is unchanged, although it often represents secrets from your fellow pupils rather than from the school itself.

Contacts can span many things, but are more likely to be fellow pupils, freindly shop owners, shrine priests & the like than they are to be the black market arms dealers or the like who crop up as contacts in other games.

Dormancy is an important Background - characters are required to have at least enough Dormancy to offset any aberrations they have.

Eufiber is not available to High School kids. I know smart role-players can think up an excuse for anything, but it really doesn't fit the setting as I picture it. A Japan-specific alternative may crop up at some point (some sort of Nova-tech costumes), but won't be available for starting characters.

Followers are, again, High School level cronies - fellow pupils or loyal club members, family staff (if the character comes from a rich family), or similar things - no cyber-ninja minions though, sorry.

Influence is basically unchanged - Backing covers the character's 'rank' at school after all. Influence can come from having an influencial family. A single dot can indicate a certain level of popularity at school - either amongst the pupils or the staff, & two dots can indicate that the character is popular with both pupils & staff. More than that requires a very good reason (for example Nezumi - a successful Novox idol singer - has an Influence of 3).

Mentor is an important social Background in the setting:

* you are the kohai (junior) to a senpai (senior) in the same club - you are expected to help out & follow the orders of your senpai, & learn by observation, whilst they take you under their wing.

** your senpai is the head of your club

*** your senpai is an important pupil at the school (a class president with the ear of the teachers)

**** your mentor is one of the facility members - one of the teachers has taken you under his or her wing

***** your mentor is, in fact, a Nova - a member of Nippontai or a follower of the Kamisama Buddhist movement, for example.

Other potential Mentors include senior family members, local authority figures (again priests & the like spring to mind) & similar people.

Node is unchanged.

Resources represent, rather than the character's cash-on-hand, the character's lifestyle - & thus, the character's family's lifestyle & wealth. Most characters will have at least a dot in Resources (unless they happen to be wards of the State), & two would be the common minimum for most pupils (since successful applicants to such a prestigious school are likely to be at least middle class). Higher levels of Resources are fine - you are lucky enough to have rich parents.

Examples:

Kenshi is president of the school's kendo club (Backing 3), which happens to be the pride of the school - making him a most popular pupil amongst both staff & his fellow pupils (Influence 2). His parents are comfortable, but not rich, & live in a nice apartment in Osaka (Resources 2).

Takashi's family are pretty poor (Resources 1) living in a tiny, rundown, apartment. Takashi's a bit of a tearaway himself, being the head of a small local teenage biker gang (Followers 5). However, as his gang all wear masks when 'out on the town' his illegal activities are, as yet, unknown to his school & parents (Cipher 1).

Kami is a quite girl who's love for traditional poetry has brought her to the attention of the school's Japanese teacher (Mentor 4). Her family are quite well off (Resources 3) & live in a nice house in the suburbs of the city.

Hey prof. Ijust wanted to point out a little known detail about Japanese schools that you may have missed. Kids in Private schools and high ranking schools arent subject to a dress code usually.

In most anime you see no matter what school they go to they will wear one, but that is mostly for show

A few questions...you mentioned that we may have a bit of raw power, but not the experienceto use them. Are we going to be subject to power spikes? Increased difficulty to somepowers?

For everyones enjoyment, when I get back ill put up some good character consepts. There are many things in Japan that are different from the rest of the world. I really like the culture though, and I read everything I can get my grubby little mits on (and talk to Japanese people whenever I can too).

As of right now, I call dibbs on the 'Samuri' consept. I have a great idea for a history on him. And...uhhh...watch out Knave, your going to have a challenge for your name in QZ-Elites pretty soon, you gaijin.

Btw, its not the same country, but in Taiwan all students are in uniform and yes, high school students tend to wear those "sailor suit" uniforms. Different schools have different uniforms but I haven't seen any without uniforms. Protocol tends to relax once they've reached university.

A few things to consider...

Religion: Last I heard Japan had about a 1% non-buddist/Shinto buddist population. While there are some good anime that feature christian characters, this is by far, not the norm.

Connections: It (used to, not as much anymore) is considered rude to intruduce yourself to someone else, unless there was no other choise. That holds true with companies today. They will hire people from many different colleges so that they have people that can introduce them. "Paul went to this University, the same as Phil in the other company. They can introduce us."

This is another good reason for having all of us in the same school, we are all connected now.

Ronin: Yes, this is the word for a dishonored masterless Samuri after all the great wars ended (during a rare time of peace). It is now used for people who have graduated high school and are looking for (but arent in) a college. We wont have to deal with this as we are in school right now, but its a nice detail to incorporate. "My brother is a ronin, he is trying to get into Tokyo U again though."

Bento: Box lunches. These are very common. They can be fancy, or plain. The will usually have multiple compartments for different foods.

Vending Machines: In Japan you can find just about anything in a vending machine. Coffee, beer, food, porn. If it can be put in one, it probably is in one.

Pink Leaflets: These are stickers and flyers that advertise different *ahem* sexual services including dating services, phone services and Sopurando's (soaplands...where you are washed very intamently and all you needs are seen to).

Westernisation: After WWII there was a national 'policy' of westernisation. Thats one of the reasons the Tokyo Towers was put up (Notice the similarity to the Eifle Tower in Paris France?). As with a lot of foreign things, it was mostly made Japanese then the other way around. Its one of the reasons they celebrate Christmas. They dont care about the christian stuff, its just a nice holiday.

Childrens Day, Girls Day: Little festials pop up. Mostly just a nice day for the kids. Childrens day is more for boys as girls have their own day. THey play with Koi kits and old replicas of weapons and armor and such.

Little details I know, but things that may help history and personality of different characters. Ill get thoes consepts up tonight.

I just read they have banned vending machines that sell Junior High girls 'sailor suits' in office buildings. It's in the latest edition od 'Maxum', I think.

for some reason I'm not feeling any strategic power scheme urges...the powers seem almost an afterthought...or am I just not getting it? I'm thinking of maybe creating a rich Jock. Dunno powers...I think some kind of morpher would be cool for "flame on!" kinda things.

I need to sleep on it. Could change drastically into an acne marred loner girl with psychotic nympho tendencies (the manga villainness.. ::tongue )

Here are thoes sample consepts that I kept promicing

Yanki (pronounced Yankee) - These are gang members. They usually die their hair and wear outragious clothing. Standing out in thie way is a very good thing.

Bosozoku - They are the the Elite of the Yanki. These are the motorcycle gangs that you hear so much about (The main characters in the movie Akira are part of a Bosozoku). They enjoy pumping up their 'cycles and painting them loud colors, they put flags on them, loud sounds and the like. Once they get to be of legal age (20) they usually turn in their flags to the local police and get on with their lives.

Yakuza - Japanese Gangsters. They are associated with the right wing, and are famous for their elaborite tattoos. They are also (of course) associated with organised crime, such as drugs, blackmail and gambleing.

Good student - In Japan to get into good schools you have to be on the ball and make good marks. Once you get into the University, however, you can take something of a break. Its pretty much the exact opposite of American schools where you relax in elementary schools, and work your butt of in University. The reson for such a high suicide rate in students is becuase of the high importance in studying if you want to get into a good school (and thus a better university, and thus a better job).

Ronin - People in between schools. You are studying hard to get into a good school. This is usually used for people trying to get into college, but can be used for people who take a year out to study for a good high school.

Shinto Priest/Priestess in training- There are still many temples in japan. There are people who do dedicate their lives to this like a Catholic priest would dedicate his life to the church, except I do belive that they can have kids.

Samuri (One who serves)- While there is no official samuri caste in japan anymore, there are still decendents of samuri and they will refer to themselves as such. There are still people who practice the old sword techniques, practicing Kendo (or Way of the Sword). There are also people who practice Kyudo (or Way of the Bow), a form of Archery.

Senpai - This is a term for any upperclassman in a school (in an american high school, a freshman would call a senior this). It is a term for any mentor type person such as a trainer at a factory. The junior in this relationship is a kohai.

Otaku - Otaku are people completely obsessed with a certian subject (like an anime), they will usually be one of the formost members of a certian club.

Geisha - Entertainers. There are less then 10k in japan currently, and there is only 1 non-japanese Geisha (I cant remember her name off hand, but she is an american woman who has spent something like 30 years with them and knows more about the Geisha then most Geisha do!). They are trained from a very young age, and have to be taking on in a Geisha house for training. To utilise their services you have to be introdused by a current patron, and pay a pretty penny for the honor.

Baseball player - Baseball is an extremely popular sport in japan.

Martial Artist (Judo, Jujutsu) - Much like Kyudo, and Kendo, Judo is the way of the soft hand. It is a style of fighting that emphasises throws and using your opponents momentum agenst them. Jujustsu is a martial arts that emphasises an 'anything goes' philosophy.

More things to think about...

Bushido - Bushido is ingraned into japanese culture, while its no where near as strict as it used to be, there are still many values that are the same.

Titles (-san, -chan, -sama) - When talking to someone you will normally use an extension on their name depending on their posisition to you. It is very rare that you use someones first name, let alone without an extension (only when talking to a friend of your level, such as a fellow student). -Sama is a title reserved for people who are above your level (such as your boss), -San is reserved for someone your level or below, and -Chan is for someone your close to like a sibling, son or daughter. -Chan is usually used for younger people. Sensai can be used for a teacher, but when referring to them one on one, its usually better to refer to them as -sama.

Buruma - Tight fitting shorts that expose all of a girls legs thats worn during gym class. Nothing important, but something some guys might want to know.

Business Cards - These are exchanged during a first meeting. Kids dont usually do this (everyone is your level or above most times), but adults will do this so they know mow much respect to show a person (the difference between -san and -sama).

Karaoke - A popular past time of college students. They rent small Karaoke rooms and drink beer. A good time is had by all.

Gaijin - Non-japanese. It is usually used as a derogatory term (like Cracker for white people).

Clubs - Clubs are very important in school. While most schools dont require you to be in one, when you join one you are expected to last it out the entire year. It is very rare that someone will quick one after joining it for the year. There are also a multitude of clubs available, and most schools will let you make what you want if you cant find one (you are expected to stick with it after all).

Hope this helps! More as I think of it!

... for some reason I'm not feeling any strategic power scheme urges...the powers seem almost an afterthought...or am I just not getting it?..

No - you seem to be getting it just fine. ::biggrin

Okay - I'm glad to see all the interest, but sending me characters now is a little premature, since I haven't finished detailing how I'm going to be working the chargen yet - specifically the whole Nova Points / phase 2 bit.

As with my other games: no merits / flaws or strengths / weaknesses please - such things can be simulated by other aspects of the game or simple good role-playing, IMHO, & just pander to min-maxing.

For Nova Points I'm still thinking the ten points per school year idea. No character has to begin the game erupted (in no way are all the pupils at the school Novas - they just tend to have a higher chance of becoming Novas). Bonus Points spent on Quantum for pre-eruption characters indicate their genetic potential for Novahood (& increase the chance of an eruption due to circumstance).

When it comes to spending Nova Points, players will have their ten points per school year to spend on the character as & when they see fit (as long as it fits into the story) - think of it as being a little like Adventure!'s dramatic editing rules: the character doesn't have any conscious control over their developing powers, but the player does.

For the first school year I'm thinking of limiting powers & Mega-Attributes to a single dot each, although overall Quantum score can go as high as the usual chargen max of 5. This is to simulate the whole 'great raw power, little control' aspect of the genre. Some powers (on a case by case basis) may be excluded from this (e.g. a character could possibly take several dots of Bodymorph, allocated to several different powers, which would be the same as being limited to one dot in each of those powers, but with the overall linking theme of the Bodymorph being rewarded).

Characters with Mega-Attributes will be limited to a single dot (per Mega-Attribute), but can take as many Enhancements as they can afford. A single dot of Mega-Strength with Lifter & a few other Enhancements thrown in can make a pretty impressive 'strongman' type, after all.

As noted earlier, characters with aberrations will need enough Dormancy to offset them, but apart from that Taint isn't really limited (so a character with 5 Dormancy could get away with a Taint of 8). On the other hand, extreme aberrations (like Glacier's 'rage' issues) should be avoided - gossip amongst the pupils suggests that the government sponsors a seperate, even more secretive, facility for highly Tainted Novas known as 'Monster Island'... ::lookaround ::squid

I'll post a few more details of the school later, but characters will all be in one class together. I'm expecting that the well thoughtout & detailed backgrounds people will create for their characters will help fill in specific details of the school (such as which clubs are run there, or who some of the teachers are) - think hard about those interpersonal Backgrounds guys! ::wink

The school is a combination Junior High & High School, with pupils ranging in age from around twelve years old to about eighteen - the PCs will all be first year High School students (grade ten) & so be fifteen or sixteen years old - i.e. they're neither the youngest nor the oldest kids in the school. Characters can either be newly arrived at the school from a different Junior High, or have attended the school for the three younger grades as well - in either case, they had to pass the tough (& stressful) 'exam hell' entrance exams to earn their places - so none are going to take any threats to their places at the school lightly.

As ezekiel rightfully suggested character is going to be more important in this game than actual powers, but powers should have a good, solid theme to them when (or if) the character develops any. Some players may not want to tie their characters down to a theme straight away, instead waiting to see how things progress in the game - others may already have a solid power concept in place. Most powers should, when used, have pretty flashy 'FX' - after all, we're going for a manga / animé genre here - even though that won't make them able to do anything the stats say they can't. Who wants a 'Quantum Bolt' when they can have a 'Kame-hame-ha wave' instead? ::wink

Hey all, quick rules question as this power is a little new to me. Could 'Inertia' use momentum control on himself to make himself speed up or slow down. For example, could he start running, then use momentum transformation to increase his speed?

I realize that generally novas are immune to thier own powers, but can they 'allow' themselves to be affected as in the above example?

ok, more questions.

I assume that using nova powers at sporting events is a BIG no-no. But what about mega-attritbutes?

Assuming those are out as well, are athletes required to have a dot in dormancy even if they don't have any aberrations?

Also, is anyone else out there planning on being on the volleyball team? It'll be a big part of my character's background, so I'm planning to do some fleshing out of it...

I think the answer is... it depends. Many of the enhancements would be obvious if used (Q-Leap, Adaptability). Full use of mega-Strength would be obvious in American Football or Boxing.

But I'd think in general the megas could be used without it being really obvious. Mega-Strength + Volleyball. Mega-Stamina + Swimming. Mega-Dex(Physical Pro) would work pretty near anywhere... but the nova in question might have to 'pull' their power to remain unobvious.

I'm probably bound for sports somewhere but I don't have an exact sport just yet. Baseball would be a good choice I think. I could change a few dots around and make a good pitcher.

RE: Obvious, Flashy Powers.

Well, mine are obvious but I'm not sure about Flashy. ::unsure

RE:Gender

Male.

Going for male here. And while he's definitely the athletic sort, I'll probably focus on more traditional Japanese stuff than volleyball.

By the way: Does anybody know which of the Japanese martial arts has the greatest focus on self-discipline and mind-over-matter teachings?

So far my idea is a kid who has a lot of expectations to live up to, and wants to do it. The kind that probably dreams of joining nippontai and serving his country with honor... ::rolleyes

Could 'Inertia' use momentum control on himself to make himself speed up or slow down. For example, could he start running, then use momentum transformation to increase his speed?

Yes, but there are a couple of things to bear in mind: firstly, running & using a power at the same time is a multiple action; secondly, Momentum Transformation has a Duration of 'N/A' - i.e. it's an absolute / instant effect, not a continuing bonus. If 'Inertia' ran at his top speed, then managed to get five successes on his Momentum Transformation roll, his speed would double - but he wouldn't be granted any special powers to maintain that speed. At best he'd rapidly slow to his usual maximum speed (thanks to the way that running works - requiring frequent contact with the ground), at worst he'd just lose control & crash.

Your best bet would be to take HyperMovement or Enhanced Movement with the character's 'Inertia' powers as the special effect.

I assume that using nova powers at sporting events is a BIG no-no. But what about mega-attritbutes?

Yes - the school rules ban the flaunting of Nova powers in public, & that includes Mega-Attributes (the difference between 'powers' & 'Mega-Attributes' is an aspect of the game system rules, not the game world's perceptions of Nova talents).

Assuming those are out as well, are athletes required to have a dot in dormancy even if they don't have any aberrations?

No - although any characters without Dormancy still look 'like Novas' in any case: people who see them do well at sports will start to gossip & suspect that they could be Novas (obviously 'cheating' by using their powers) - a dishonour that no self-respecting student should be able suffer!

Of course, if a member of staff catches a pupil breaking school rules, then there will be trouble - bringing dishonour upon the school by cheating at sports would be certain grounds for dismissal.

Its hard to see how you'd have the time. Homework is 2-3 hours a day and so is the club.

In theory someone with Nova powers could get around this (Adaptability, Mega-intelligence, Clone, maybe Mega-Stamina). But the clubs are structured around everyone who doesn't (i.e. many of them meet at the same times).

Joining two clubs would be difficult even with nova powers. Doing so without making it obvious you were using nova powers would be near impossible.
