Aberrant: Stargate Universe - Land of the Lost (Combat Oriented Mission)

Landry wasn't pleased. This morning he'd received an urgent request for aide from the Tok'ra. A very important tok'ra spy had crash landed on one of Anubis' worlds and they wanted help rescuing him.

"So that's why I've asked you here. This mission is volunteer only. The only access to the world is by gate. Any ship that approaches is hit by some kind of beam that disrupts it's systems. Our objectives are first, rescue Hal'kurir, and secondly to disable or better yet capture the device they are using to bring down ships that approach the planet. Needless to say that could be very handy for Earth in the event of another invasion attempt. The Tok'ra believe that Anubis abandoned the planet before his first defeat thousands of years ago so the hope is that the planetary defense is automated, but there were rumors that some of the system lords were looking to all of Anubis' former worlds in an effort to defeat him. The Tok'ra spy had followed one of Ba'al's Ha'tak to the planet, both ships when down."

Landry looked around the room to the gathered Specialists, "We expect that some of the Jaffa may have survived and they will be looking for the device as well. Besides that, the mission is dangerous. If Anubis abandoned this planet and left an automated defense system designed to knock ships out of orbit, what else could he have left to ambush those that might try to plunder the place?"

"Now, if you would like to volunteer, please report to the armory in one hour. Dismissed."

Ryan reported to the Armory at the appointed time and nodded. He was the first, and inwardly he smiled. That fit with his Marine background perfectly. "Major Hawke volunteering for duty General, Sir."

He stands at attention. "What gear are we permitted to take with is on this mission?"

"I'd say the answer to that was pretty straightforward, guys. To both questions." Sgt. Perault's manner was businesslike as he moved up to the armory's duty officer and handed over some requisition slips. As the clerk headed off to find the necessary items, Dec turned to the other two, his face grim.

"You take what you can carry and use. And you use whatever tricks bring you and your friends home safely." The Specialist's eyes were uncovered, catching the light like shifting quicksilver as he regarded them, then turned to the General and saluted. "Sgt. Perault reporting for duty, sir. Am I right in assuming the gloves are off?"

It had taken Dec a few minutes to talk this through with himself, which is why he was a little slower than some to arrive. Some of those going would not necessarily be combat-trained. They might be techies or scientists going to retrieve the artifact. There would be heavy enemy resistance both around the device and around the Tok'ra spy. And try to escape it as he might, Declan Perault was one of the best-suited personnel in SGC for a mission like this.

And Red wouldn't let him not volunteer, of course.

Gwyn shrugs at the Sgt, "Maybe, but previously we'd been told that the Tok'ra weren't to know about us, so I thought I better check."

As he spoke Gwyn put in the slips for his normal gear, although for his new MP7 now that had come in with the Sgt's, and picked up a few spare slips in anticipatiion of the General's responce.

That sinking feeling about this mission had gripped the General again, that was the thing that bothered him most about it.

"Use whatever you have to use, but try to avoid leaving survivors that can report what they've seen. We believe that the only people on the planet are enemy Jaffa which makes them enemy combatants. If you should happen to find anyone that is not, try to avoid using your abilities in front of them, but not at the expense of your own lives. "

The generals feelings were plain to see on his face, "I'll be honest with you. I don't like this mission. Not that I believe I'm sending you into something you can't handle, otherwise I would not be sending you. I don't like it because of what you might have to do to accomplish it, but the Tok'ra have called in a marker on this one and we are obliged to try and help them out."

"Understood General."

Gwyn then turns to Hawke and Dec, "Well Gentlemen, what weapons would you suggest? If I get my hands on someone they are likely to be dead, and I may be able to rip my way into some, if not most of their vehicles. However, that means getting in close to them, so what I use at range? Grenade launcher, M16, Barrett?"

"Whatever you can safely carry and remain fully mobile."

Ryan picked up one of the multipurpose battle rifles with grenage launcher attached, both his pistols, and multiple clips and a supply of Grenades for the launcher. He had both his carbonsteel K-bar knives in his boots.

His final weapon choice was a Zat. "We're going in to snatch and grab, but that may mean we have to be very quick and quiet."

"A Zat or your bare hands are best for that."

"Well, I guess I'll just go with the Zat, then." Kyria had slipped into the armory while the others were talking. "I'd like a chance to stretch some of my new abilities anyways. And maybe meet a Tok'ra."

She glanced over at Declan and smiled as she picked out her weaponry: a zat, a couple of grenades (just in case), and a belt that she could clip or holster all of them to. Her eyes slid over to the General. "You do know that this could go much faster and smoother if I could just locate and communicate with the Tok'ra telepathically. We could coordinate both their rescue and acquiring the artifact much more efficiently."

She did her best to keep her frustration from showing, but it irked her that the SGC, for all the good it did for this Earth, insisted on such secrecy from not only their own people, but their allies in a war with a hostile and much more powerful enemy.

Omar watched in silence, listening to the others discuss weaponry and tactics. Eventually he spoke. "Those of us with super-strength have the ability to pull punches. It isn't something that you can do with ease, but if you are worried about killing something, then, with some focusing, you can minimize the damage you do." The response was directed to Gwyn and to anyone else who was interested.

"If you are concered about needing range, there is always a 'powermax'. Of course a zat would work as well."

Omar left and returned with only his eufiber and a pack filled with MRE's and a book.

Dec had attached two machetes to the back of his webbing, the hilts of the two-foot weapon/tools behind each shoulder. Standing a little apart from the others he continued to arm up. With graceful economy of motion he clipped flashbangs, frag and smoke grenades to his belt. He seemed absorbed in his thoughts and absent from the moment, but his gear-checking proceeded anyway. The sergeant looked up as Kyria spoke and returned her smile, his eyes showing an eerie light as his hands checked the two silenced MP7's, adjusting the slings to minimise their movement as he clipped them to his harness. A canteen went onto his belt, and he filled up his ammo pouches. As an afterthought, he clipped a Zat to his belt as well. Hell, might as well give it a try. Damn thing looks and feels like a Hasbro toy, though.

He moved over to the bench by Kyria and sat, stowing a field-medics kit into his backpack. A spare canteen of water joined it, as did a set of NVG's and extra rations. He glanced up at her, his voice pitched too low for human ears as he murmured to her.

"Yeah, it sucks. Sometimes we just gotta trust that the brass know what they're doin', at least until we know fer sure that they don't." He smiled with grim humor and fastened his pack shut, swinging it round onto his back and securing it there before standing with an easy flowing grace. The baselines present shifted a little uneasily. Perault today seemed... larger, somehow, in his combat gear. The closed-in body language was gone. The shades behind which he hid his eyes were conspicuously absent, his head was raised and his gaze was tracking their movements with predatory intentness, or so it seemed to the nervous armory staff.

Aradia had walked in, and glanced around at everyone present with a small but hesitant smile. She'd spent a few minutes listening to the discussions about their abilities, then she walked over to General Laundry looking a bit nervous.

This was the first time most of them had seen her in a couple days and there was something different about the young acrobat - she was somehow more than she had been, her unique appearance more enhanced than before - a little more exotic looking, and a lot more striking. The colored streaks in her hair seemed to have a greater depth, a variation of tone that made them look even more beautiful than they had been, like it was naturally that way instead of something she'd paid someone to do. Large brown eyes were somehow more striking and more noticeable, with longer lashes and perfectly arched eyebrows. It was subtle enhancements, nothing that made her look like a different person.. but yet, she was distinctly more beautiful than before.

She didn't mention any of that though as she addressed the General, and unless he said something to her she wasn't planning on talking about her sudden change in appearance.

"General.. I thought I'd ask your opinion. I'm willing to volunteer for the mission, but I'm not all that experienced combat-wise, as far as regular stuff goes, you know? I mean, there's a lot of things I can become that would probably help a lot in combat, but nothing that isn't obvious I imagine. Do you think I would be helpful to you - or do you think I would just get in the way? I know I've been put to use primarily as a scout by my current team, so I wasn't sure if I was going to be good for much else or not.. especially if you're wanting to try and keep our abilities secret.

General Landry shrugged, "If you want to volunteer for the mission you are welcome to go. Whether it be as a scout or in a direct combat role I'm sure you'd be an asset. Just be sure that you are ok with it. If you run up against the jaffa from that downed ship you will be in a dangerous situation and it will be too late to hesitate then. You may have to kill enemy soldiers, if you are ok with that then you may join the mission."

Gwyn considers the machete's on Dec's back, but after an instants thought dismisses them as too weak to withstand use with his full strength. That gets filed as a nother project to work on when they get back...

Instead he contents himself with his MP7 in it's patrol sling, an M16/M203 combo with a bandolier of grenades and several pouches full of spare clips for the M16 and MP7. Just for good measure he also gets a backpack with half a dozen RL60 for use against vehicles or bunkers they might need to deal with. Lastly he gets his normal expedition kit with it's food, water and sensors.

Dr. Yseult Sierra checked the snug fit of her BDUs then slung her pack over her shoulders, heavy with medical supplies and her laptop, as well as the typical expedition kit. She adjusted the straps for maximum load distribution, bound her golden hair in a bun, then put on a camouflaged cap. The blond doctor took a deep breath, held it for a long moment, then released in a steady sigh, her faced composed with a professional coolness.

Entering a combat zone was one of the last things she wanted to do. But the other specialists were her colleagues, some were even becoming friends, and a doctor, especially one that had a good understanding of specialist physiology, would be very useful. And that is meaning me. And though retrieving the Tok'ra wasn't a major concern for her, a planetary defense system capable of repelling Goa'uld spacecraft did truly peak her interest. To keep my family safe.

She slipped on her dark, stylish sunglasses, and made her way to the armory. Once there, she presented herself to General Landry.

"Dr. Yseult Di... Sigh... Sierra, reporting, Generale..." Yseult trailed off as her attention was drawn unavoidably to Aradia, mouth open, a pang of something she had never felt before flaring through her.

Her appearance had never really concerned her before. When she was younger, study and work consuming her, it hadn't mattered, and once she met François, she didn't care. Objectively, she knew her new appearance was far more beautiful than her old one, her features more symmetrical, breasts higher and fuller, figure more toned and shapely, but she would have traded it all for her old face.

But starting with seeing Olivia exit the changing room in a new dress, more radiant than any woman she had seen before, then witnessing Kyria's superhuman presence, and now finally seeing Aradia's beyond flawless pulchritude, Yseult experienced a flash of pure jealousy. It lasted only a moment, but still, Yseult felt disgusted with herself.

"Aradie... You are looking... well. Congratulations," Yseult said, closing her mouth with a snap, forcing her lips into a smile. "If you will be excusing me, I have to equip myself for the mission, yes?"

Yseult moved over and requisitioned a Zat, a compact P90, and several grenades that she thought she could manipulate to good effect with her telekinesis, if necessary. With a sigh, she sat down on a bench, took off her glasses, revealing her inhuman eyes, the whites nearly obscured by the intense turquoise irises, then began attaching her weapons to her web-harness.

"No problem shooting enemy soldiers, sir. Just unarmed civilians."

With that, she turned and followed Yse to the requisitions counter, equipping herself with the zat and the M4 carbine that she'd made special arrangements to have set aside for her use only. That way she didn't have to keep re-keying the weapons to be able to shape-change with her. She skipped the grenades, being unwilling to recharge those every time she was issued new ones. Then she walked over and sat next to Dr. Sierra, her voice dropping to a low murmur.

"Thanks, but.. it was kinda an accident, y'know? I feel weird, like everybody's staring at me and I can't tell if I'm just imagining it or not. I just wanted to be able to look like my teammates, if I ever needed to, and now I look like a fuckin' Miss USA contestant with too much money to blow on a surgeon, y'know? It's weird, and I don't really know if I like it. I don't look like me anymore."

"I am assuring you, Aradie, no surgery could produce such..." Yseult said just as softly, gesturing at Aradie, then letting her hand drop. The smile she gave the younger woman was more genuine than her previous effort, if still holding a contrite edge.

"They will stare, more at you than at Kyria even, I think, because they saw you one way, and now another. However, they will grow accustomed to it, they have gotten used to so much else. At least, you are still recognizably you, yes?" Yseult looked down at her hands, a stranger's hands that she now saw as her own. "I too, know something about not looking like yourself anymore." Yseult tilted her face back to look at Aradie, her gentle smile now full of resigned acceptance. "All I can be saying, the feeling of strangeness passes, more swiftly than you would imagine."

Suddenly, Yseult chuckled, soft and sad. "Kyria, she says that we can learn to do anything, yes? I think I will have to ask you if you can teach me to change shape as you do. It would be nice to look like my true self again, if only for a time."

She smiled, and shrugged at the other woman nonchalantly.

"I guess you would know about that, huh? Well, I'd be happy to try and teach you, I guess that's kind of how it works. What Kyria told me is that you have to find your.. well, your trigger, I guess. For some people maybe it's fright or panic, for others maybe it's stubbornness. For me.. well, I get pissed off. Guess it makes sense, you know? That's how I've always been. Some of the other girls couldn't get a trick right, they had to chill out, do their thing, come back to it. That didn't work for me. I'd keep doing it and doing it till I finally got so pissed off I got it right. So I guess this works the same way. I could sure try to help though.. just lemme know, k?"

With that, the beautiful young acrobat stood up, placed a foot on the bench she had been sitting on, and gave the laces of her boots a sharp jerk to tighten them up before tying them.

"You ready to do this?"

"I am as ready as I ever am for things like this," Yseult sighed, her hands checking the fastenings of her supplies and weapons again. "I am thinking it is a bad sign, that I am a researcher, yet am growing accustomed to going out in the field like this." Aradia glanced up and just barely noticed the amused glint in the blond doctor's uncanny turquoise eyes. She also noted again that the mother of two looked no older than she did, if not even somewhat younger.

"And thank-you, Aradie. When I am ready to try to learn to do what you can do, I will let you know, tout de suite." She gave the newly-minted beauty a pat on the arm in thanks, her eyes growing wide and distant as she pondered what her 'trigger' might be, a finger tapping her lips in thought.

Her telekinetic ability developed when she was a captive and was just what she needed to escape, had she realized the extent of her capabilities at an earlier time. Her prodigious acumen seemed to be simply an enhancement of her natural gifts. And her newest ability, that arose from need as well, but she saw it more as a refinement of capabilities she already possessed. Was that her trigger, need and being able to see the new power as a logical outgrowth of her current capabilities?

Ryan smiled as two members of his team had volunteered. His was a very combat oriented team, and he knew Yesult was more than capable there as well. He walked over to Yesult and Aradia and smiled.

"Good to have you both along." He chuckles. Then looks to Cam. "A true multi team mission, you've got almost all of one signed on here."

His eyes return to Aradia, appraising the changes and he nodded. "Your abilities as a scout are invaluable Aradia, You won't be in the way at all."

Cam nodded. "Yeah, still waiting on a couple to join us, but the time isn't up yet. Once everyone's here I think we'll have all of SG21, and 23, and most of 22. I'll be commanding the overall mission, but I'll defer to you when it comes to combat. Most of the combat I've seen has been in the sky."

Cam looked over at Ari and couldn't help but stare for a moment, she really had changed...

"Aradia, I know you make a first rate scout because of your ability, but I'm sure you won't be left out in combat either. With your ability I'm sure facing a tiger or something would be very intimidating." He smiled to her showing his confidence in her.

"Mmm," was Kyria's eloquent response to Declan's observation. She gave his backpack a speculative look. "So, what should I bring along? I don't need to eat or drink, we're not conducting much in the way of scientific research, and I've barely the first clue about how to patch up someone that's hurt. On the other hand, I'm not sure you could put anything in one of those that I couldn't easily lift. Suggestions?"

She watched the exchanges between the others, happy to see the comradarie and trust that was building between the 'specialists' of this Earth.

She smiled at the guys, somehow managing to avoid looking flirtatious despite her new-found beauty. She'd always saved her flirtatiousness for the customers, not her fellow circus performers. It kept things simpler that way, and she'd tried to do the same here. Of course, she was saving all her flirting for Waki these days anyway, and...

Oh shit. Waki. He hasn't seen me yet. That should be interesting..

"A tiger.. I like it. Well, I kinda got the impression I wasn't supposed to be too obvious, right? But you know, if a tiger's what you want, I'm sure I can handle that, sir."

She smiled back, though it was more of a mischievous grin. It was the first time he'd seen her look even a little excited for a mission, instead of dreading it. Maybe the circus girl was finally starting to get used to military life, though it wasn't likely she'd ever admit to it.

Omar munched on an apple, noticing Aradia's newly acquired beauty. They are changing. I wonder what they will become? In some ways, he felt like a parent; trying to guide and mentor them. Some of them, he was sure, needed little or no help. Others, however, he knew needed guidance. He would wait for them to come to him. 'When the student is ready, the teacher will come.' Even if it was true, would they even want my help?

"We have a large group here, and that can be a liability in a mission like this." He might piss off some, but he hoped they would understand. "From what I understand, there will be combat and it might get bad. While I know that all of us have power and capabilities beyond normal people, not all of us are designed for a combat environment."

Omar's hands genuflected as he enunciated his points: "If we are assaulted by a large group of Jaffa, I'm talking about 30 or 40 of them, would it make much sense if half our group had to worry about protecting the other half? Let me give an example: If Vinny was to toss one of his trademark 'mortars' at a group of Jaffa who managed to get within our peremeter, how many of you could survive the blast? Or what if you are flushed from your hiding spot and shot with a zatt or even a staff weapon. Could you survive? What about firing at a group of Jaffa. would you hold your fire if one of us was amongt them- If you were the one in the group, would zatt or small arms fire hurt you?" Omar became less animated. "If you answered yes, then you might be a liability working in a foreward combat position. In such a position, we are better off being on the offensive and not on the defensive. I would suggest that the less combat oriented people hold back at a FOB, while the combat groups lead forays into enemy held areas."

Omar sat down and waited for the inevitable flurry of resentment and anger. Hopefully some would understand and even agree with his statement.

"I think, given that both objectives for this mission start with searching, that splitting into several smaller teams would be a good idea. One of those teams could be the HQ team for communications and backup. That'd probably be the best team for me. I'm fine on combat, but not nearly indistructable nor particularly geared for combat in my quatumn powers. My telepathy works great for communications, though, and I have a new trick I want to try out."

She looked around to the others, "While we wait on the last few people to show up, what does everyone else think?"

"Extra ammo, extra meds, extra rations for people that need 'em." Dec answered Kyria with a smile. "Kinda make yourself an unofficial quartermaster, especially as you're planning to be on the field HQ team. There's nothin' worse than running out of something you need in the field." Standing next to her, he looked at the others.

"Buildin' on Omar's and Kyria's suggestions, I'd suggest we coordinate into three teams. First team is recon, composed of those of us with the right powers or experience at point work. Second is assault, containing the heavy-hitters, and the third team is field HQ, which contains those who don't fall into the first two categories. While we're travelling, Recon goes on point and acts as pathfinders, Assault trails them and gets ready to back them up. If we come across something that we can't go around or shouldn't leave at our backs, Recon and Assault elements coordinate to take the Tango out." His gaze swept over the group as he talked in a matter-of-fact tone, though his body language was eerily still. "Field HQ act as backup, comms, and special reserves if we need to think outside the box on a problem. I'd suggest our brain trust and scientist types go into that team. When we reach our objectives, Recon scouts them out while Assault and HQ teams catch up and set up a FOB, then we present the data to HQ team with our recommendations and let them call the ball." If Dec noticed that he seemed more erudite whilst talking about mounting a military operation, he gave no sign of it.

Ryan nodded. "With the exception of Aradia, Seargent, Those of us most adept in combat are also those best suited to recon."

"My suggestion for the three teams would be Yesult, Cam, and Kyria for HQ team, You and Omar for our assault team, and myself, Aradia, and Gwyn for the recon team. Should Noah elect to join us then I'll move to the assault team and let him take my spot in recon, as he's perhaps one of the best suited for that mission profile."

"With all due respect, Major Hawke sir, I'm not a 'heavy'. My power profile makes me well-suited for point reconnaisance, in addition to which I have training in that field. 'Rangers lead the way' after all sir." Dec's attitude was one of professional respect. "I'd suggest you, myself and Ms McConnell be the recon element, with Noah taking your place if he shows up. Gwyn's stronger and more durable than I am: He'd be great for the assault team. Major Wright too, if he shows. I agree with your assessment for the HQ team. If Li- uh, Specialist Jennings-Izumi comes along, I'd say she joins that element also."

Cam considered that and nodded, "That sounds good, but I'd add Vinny to the assault team and Olivia to the HQ team, assuming they are coming." He glanced down at his watch to see how much time they had left. "I don't think Noah is coming, he wasn't at the initial meeting, the docs are checking him out for something related to his most recent 'change'."

"Just remember the old saying, no plan survives the first engagement with the enemy. Stay on your toes out there and be flexible."

He glanced over at Omar, "Oh, and Omar, what you say is true no matter what size the team, but I don't think anyone besides you could survive one of Vinny's blasts unharmed so that's a moot point."

Looking back to the group he finished, "Try and remember either other's 'talents' and give the the room they need to operate. If we run into a big group of Jaffa all bunched up in a tight space, don't rush in and engage them, give Vinny a chance to do his thing and then charge in to do the cleanup. That's the sort of thing to remember."

Gwyn looks up from checking the batteries and alignment on his MP7's laser sight with some surprise that people considered him a 'heavy', but kept his peace while they finished their discussion. I guess I better start working harder on externalising my ability to change density and try to come up with a ranged attack with it somehow. I don't want to have to get into melee in a hot zone all the time.

"Colonel, don't worry, if I see a bunch of Jaffa close together I'm more likely to send a grenade their way than go rushing into others line of fire! I'm also bringing along the usual range of sensors for one of our missions to help pin down the location of the weapon/ Have they given us anything to go on to help find the Tok'ra agent?"

The others understood waht he was saying and he was glad they took his suggestion seriously. He needed to let the others know what they could and couldn't do with regards to hie engagements. "Since Gwynn brought up ranged fire and lines of fire, I should probably be the one rushing in and taking the brunt of the hostile fire." Omar wasn't bragging, just stating a fact. "If they are preoccupied with me, the rest of you can throw whatever you wish into the fray. I doubt a grenade will do much damage, and even if I does, I should be able to heal it fairly quickly. That would be the fastest way to eliminate a large group. I gather them into a scrum and you light it up." Omar smiled as he imagined the scene.

Vinny walked in with only minutes to spare. He was dressed in his black BDU's. The Captain seemed more intimidating, more imposing, more sure of himself, (if that is possible) and was walking with a steadiness only seen in other Specialists. His body seemed to almost vibrate with potential energy as he entered the room.

A quick nod to the rest was all the acknowledgement they got as he equipped himself with the standard gear of an SG operative, P90, full vest...he also packed his own standard fare, explosives, timers and the various accoutrements that one with a specialty in blowing stuff up could get his hands on.

When he was ready, he turned to motley team, pulled out a cigar and ran it under his nose before popping it in his mouth and crossing his arms in front of him.

"She'll be here soon."

Fuckin' snakes.

Olivia came in at a jog, giving Landry a nod but no excuse for almost being late. It wasn't her fault, but she wasn't going to whine about it. Instead, she stopped next to Vinny, dropping to one knee and opening her pack for another check.

She hated this mission, hated the very idea of going on it. But she suspected that she'd be needed. Her versatility made her a natural pick for the mission, and her cultural knowledge was largely unduplicated in the other Specialists. Her only 'fault', if it could even be called that, was her CO status. She had no P-90 strapped to her vest, and a Zat where her sidearm would be holstered.

Olivia would feel so much better about this mission if the butterflies in her gut would stop churning around.

Kyria nodded and went back to packing, filling her pack as full as she could with the suggested items and then easily swinging it on to her back. She gave Livy a sympathetic smile when the other nova rushed in.

Glancing around the room one last time, she asked, "Okay, are we ready to go?"

Gwyn wanders over to Livy looking grim, "Hi Doc. Do you really want to come on this one? I know you're CO, and this is pretty much a kill mission. We can't afford for word of our abilities to get out and given the difficulty of the mission we are likely to have to use them. Put bluntly that means we can't leave witnesses behind."

"I know, Gwyn," Olivia said without looking up as she finished making sure her backpack was properly equipped. She kept her voice and tone careful, despite feeling anger at being questioned about her willingness to participate. "But medics often have CO status, and they're allowed to come along on kill-missions. They have skills that are needed, and I'm coming for the same reason. I think I'll be needed.

"Besides," she added, meeting his eyes with her emotionally charged brown ones, "I suspect that there are enough people here willing to pull the trigger that you won't even notice my reticence. Don't worry. I won't be a problem, at all."

Gwyn smiled sadly at her, "I never thought you would be a problem Olivia, I just didn't want you to put yourself amidst all this death without being sure."

He then gives her a gentle clap on the shoulder, and a nod to Vinny as he moves back over towards Dec.
