Aberrant RPG - What's your character like? Part 2

Matt

Recommended Posts

Yes, but there are other examples. Geryon maimed someone famous, presumably they could afford healing as well. Even more on point, that guy in Asia (TUZ??) who was blinded and had no healing or mega-stamina at all eventually healed his eyes.

The point is that novas normally heal, even AGG damage, back to their base state, unless that base state itself has been changed.

The usual things that can change the base state are eruption (London Fog) and/or aberration (twisted limbs). However, I would claim that it might also change if the injury is "in theme". Meaning that the nova just decides that this is better on some level (although this is rarer).

On a side note, Codex might not be a nova. She might be a psion (or whatever they are called in the nova age).

IMO In the few weeks after eruption, a Nova's abilities haven't quite found the balance. A major injury that happened in this time could possibly become "frozen" into someone's quantum matrix. So that becomes their base state. Other Nova's can't heal it, because their power only returns people to that state.

I use this in my game to justify physical Flaws.

... or ...

The "flaw" becomes part of their self image of who they are. A means by which they define themselves all the way down through the subconscious. Perhaps a lame librarian isn't lame because the damage to her knee but because (for her to be who she sees herself as) the leg just doesn't work. It's not broken, rather its just the way she is. Or maybe the leg is a reminder of something she's learned and never wants to forget.

The node works in conjuction with the quantum flux that allows consciousness. Reality reorders itself to our wishes even when the wish isn't made by the conscious mind.

Greetings to all.

Just thought I'd add in a character I've used online for a time (unfortunately the game dissipated). The character has been adjusted somewhat to make him more what I originally intended - I like the idea of being one of those rare British novas smile .

I've also added a few restrictions to some of his powers - the hair growth on shapeshift and the short ranged on the quantum bolt - primarily because I think they are appropriate to the character. And yes he was created with more than the standard 30 nova points...I think it was 50 or 60, though I can't remember exactly.

Anyhoo...here he is:

Name: Jeremiah Wells

Nova Name: Kage

Birthplace: Glasgow, Scotland.

Former City of Residence: Within the Military Machine.

Age: 28yrs

Gender: Male

Eruption: Physical Stress/Danger (Threatening Situation)

Nature: Survivor

Allegiance: Part Time DeVries Elite (Hazardous Duty Courier)

Description: Dressed in loose coveralls, which shift in synch with his skin patterns, Kage is an odd looking yet initially unimposing figure. Expressive features portray his feelings easily (or at least the feelings he wants to portray) though they are oddly offset by the blank slate greyness of his eyes. Hard to offend, but will hold a grudge for a long time if he is - the dish served cold more often than not.

Brief (ish)

- Jeremiah Wells spent 6 years in the Royal Marines after leaving college. He saw regular action protecting UN aid convoys in South American, African and Gulf countries where the populace were always suffering due to the greed for power of the few at the top.

- As Novas became more prolific in the early years of the millennium, Jeremiah was seconded to a Special Anti-nova Operations Team(SAOT) and began to see covert action in various countries throughout the world. Their job was to 'take care' of small scale Nova led factions working against UK and Directive interests (fanatical religious cults, criminals and such like), both proving the capability of properly equipped ‘baselines’ to deal with Novas directly and saving the UK government the need to risk their rare and valuable Nova resources.

- His regular enlistment ended because of a brawl in a Portsmouth nightclub. He was on leave with a couple of buddies and they had decided to go looking for a good time, as is expected of Squaddies. The bar seemed reasonable, mainly because of the significant female presence within, and the beer was alcoholic enough to get them drunk.

- Near the end of the night they had all found a companion to share drinks with and were in the process of leaving when some local jocks decided to step in and break up the party. The brawl did not last very long, even though the soldiers were outnumbered 2 to 1. Wells lost control of his temper after receiving a gash across his face from a broken bottle (he was mainly angry with himself for getting hit than at the jock that hit him) and from that point things were on a downward spiral.

- Jeremiah erupted in an uncontrolled maelstrom of energy that tore into both his assailants and his buddies - those at ground zero died almost instantly in the swirling vortex. His squadmates, who were a short distance away dealing with their own 'problems', experienced the periphery effects of the eruption, but it was enough to trigger one of them, Elias, to have an eruption of his own (though Jeremiah remained unaware of this fact until afterwards – when he also received the dismal news of his other friend, Jake, being crippled as a result of some flying debris getting lodged in his spine).

- By the time Wells had recovered some semblance of self-control, two of the jocks were dead and one in critical condition, the others gaining an assortment of bruises and broken bones. Wells sat and surveyed the devastation of the scene; not reacting to any outside stimuli until a squad of RMPs quietly led him off.

- The Marine Corp and Directive closed ranks around the trio, paying off witnesses where possible and threatening those not amenable to their generous compensations. No formal charges were filed. Jeremiah and his recently erupted squadmate were shifted out of their platoon and into a Nova Training Unit. They had become the UK’s newest Quantum resource.

- The NTU kept them busy, training them hard and not giving them time to get a grip on what had occurred. It was some weeks later when they finally questioned the whereabouts of their crippled squadmate. After some questioning and cajoling they discovered that he had been medically discharged and sent home. While carrying out this investigation they accidentally came across a document listing their squadmate as a ‘Rejected Candidate’ due to his crippled condition. This raised their eyebrows somewhat and led them to discover that their entire platoon was composed of latent novas (discovered during standard military medical examinations) with the intention of exposing them to Nova adversaries in the hope that they would erupt and add to the UK military machines Nova ‘resources’.

- The pair of them quit the military and went looking for work elsewhere, not a difficult prospect for a nova with their level of training, though they did earn the emnity of the Directive for leaving. They also made sure that the rest of the SAOT members were informed of their latent nova status before they quit.

- Jeremiah went to work part time as a courier for DeVries, spending a significant portion of his earnings ensuring that his crippled squadmate received the best of care. Elias was affected to a much greater degree by the blatant abuse and manipulation they had suffered at the hands of the UK military, an institution he had laid his life on the line for numerous times. He secluded himself from the world for a quite a while, only to resurface having adopted the teachings of Mal.

- Elias and Jeremiah still remain close friends even though they have differing viewpoints of how things should be. Both still feel a duty to the ‘Rejected Candidate’ and share a dislike for those they used to work for.

- Jeremiah maintains a 24-hour staff at his house in California, to ensure Jake’s well being. The two of them often take trips to various places around the world to help satiate his friends recently acquired love of botany.

Erupted when on a scietific field trip with friends, one of whom walked in front of a car. Momentum was swaped from the car to his friend, who spent twelve weeks in hospital.

After getting out of the P:E facility he went to Soho to celebrate his new found power. At that point a tainted Nova called the Blue Demon attacked Lester Square, and Momento and four other Novas managed to beat the Blue Demon and formed a national team.

Things went down, accused of a crime that they didn't commit they faked their deaths and started a campaign against the directive as solders of fountune.

I told you it was brief. Didn't want to infringe on any storylines that may come up.

History

Desperately poor, Rashima al-Hariti is Turkey’s newest nova, and arguably becoming one of the nation’s most famous. A belly-dancer by trade, the young woman called ‘Veil’ for the adhesive silken scarves she extends from her hands is the daughter of a widowed vegetable-seller known for the dichotomy she presents; she holds traditional Islamic values yet is a highly seductive individual. With her angelic voice, hypnotic dancing and superhuman grace, she has a lot of new options open to her.

Veil possesses metahuman dexterity and balance, enhanced hearing and the ability to manipulate people with her voice. She is known for the long scarves she manifests when she dances, which she can twist into hypnotic patterns or use to bind foes or swing from. Her looks and natural charisma have also been enhanced, and she seems to be what the client she dances for wants her to be.

Erin Napolitano is 33, married to Jacob Napolitano, a Circuit Court judge in Boston. She had three kids, two boys and one girl, until recently when the oldest son, Robert, was killed in a construction accident. (A catwalk he was walking under on the sidewalk collapsed. Three other people were seriously injured, including his school teacher and two other students. He was nine.)

She changed apparently out of grief a few days later while praying at Our Lady of Victories church. Word has it from the four eyewitnesses in the church that evening that she was asking for God to send her an angel. While kneeling in the pew, she suddenly stood up, closed her crying eyes and arched back with arms upraised, and transformed. In that moment she became angelic in appearance and had white, feathered wings sprout from her back.

She's demonstrated a keen insight into people's moods and feelings. At hospitals and by people bringing their loved ones to her, she has shown that by laying her hands upon a wound then kissing it, she can heal them. The sick and diseased have also benefited from this kiss. Her voice seems to have the power of the Almighty behind it when necessary. She cannot fly as such, at least she has not been seen flying. She also claims that God "speaks" to her by allowing her, when needed, a glimpse into a person's soul.*

She's given no interviews, and stayed away from the media as much as possible. The Bishop of the Boston Diocese has visited her on several occasions, spending as much as a week at a time with her, and has stated that he believes she is touched by the Lord. The Vatican has yet to release any confirmation or denial of this.

Erin refused to speak with Project Utopia's intervention team; by all outward appearances she doesn't believe she is a Nova and was angered when they suggested otherwise. No one knows whether or not this belief is grounded in faith, delusion, or Taint. Either way, she's been given the moniker of Seraphim by many in Boston and it stuck so quickly that she had no choice but to adopt it.

She can appear human if she chooses, but thus far has been unable to resume any semblance of a normal life. Her reputation as a "free" healer (and messenger from above) causes many to seek her out. She's been given a holy charge (at least in her mind) and can't be the simple wife of a judge any longer. Her husband, a devout Catholic, is doing his best to support her in this, but he doesn't know how to tell her that she's in all likelihood only another Nova and that he believes her "holy charge" is just an extreme way of dealing with the loss of their son. Her children alternately deal with being thought of as the offspring of a crazy Nova or that of an Angel, and either way, it's not easy, especially when she isn't around as much as she once was.

Veil:

I really like your character concept. To me she's very unique and flavorful. I was wondering if you would mind if I borrowed her as a NPC for my TT game? I see a lot of RPing potential using her as far as character interaction goes. smile

Seraphim:

I also like your character as well. Coincidentally, I made one very similar to her. I hope to eventually post his stats and history soon since he will be starring in one of the pieces of fan-fic I plan to post in the near future. He won't have any impact on the N!Prime environment however, since my fiction will all be [NC - Non Continuity] until I get a better feel for how things are run around here. So if you happen to see "Seraph" running around, I just don't want you to think that I'm biting your concept. Our two characters are fundamentally different, but just happen to have similar Nova monikers. smile

Seraphim.

I only have two prblems. One Seraphim is more than one Seraph.

And

This ability is way off the mark.Seeing as Aberrant doesn't say, there is or is not a "God".Then idea of Quantum based powers being able to tell other people's morals based off a book, they may not believe in,is uncalled for.The facts this, SINs,are man made, and people are changed differently by moral ordeals.

One person kills someone and doesn't think twice of it,another has a mental break down.I mean by our very nature we do all share the same morals. And I am willing to bet, that more people do not believe in those "sins" than those that do.

After all "Lust" is a sin.But what is lust to you, is just being human to someone else. All in all, the idea of setting up an ability that targets others ,and judges them, based on the viewer's point of view, is just off. Even more so,when basing it something so abartary, and counter humanitarian as the 10 sins.

The way I took it was that Seraphim's ability was completely subjective. She see's someone as 'sinning' if they've commited an act that in her opinion is a sin. Whether or not they've actually commited that act or whether or not that act is truly a sin. It's all based on the definitions she accepts, not any true absolute basis of right and wrong. I'm currently running a demon character in M&M that has pretty much the same ability.

Now, whether or not that strangely limited form of esp/telepathy/postcognition should really be used as an Enhancement is something else altogether.

Here is the problem. What was the first thing that the Jews do,after getting the rules?

And anyone can see someone "sin".She see what "sins" people did.But not even that, rather how much they have "sinned" in the past.So she see what people have done in their lives on a moral scale, based on what she thinks is good or evil.Basicly, she looks at you,and knows weather or not, the food you ate 10 days ago would taste good too her.

Yeah, and? I get that. You're problem with the power was that you don't like the idea of 'God' or 'Sin' in Aberrant being objective. I don't think she's claiming that it is. I think she's claiming that it's subjective. Thus nullifying your point.

I'm not a Biblical scholar. What was the first thing the Jews did after getting the rules? Kill the idolators? Yeah, so? Is this a problem as to what her character would or would not do? That's a roleplaying issue, not a mechanics issue.

What exactly is your issue here? Is it game mechanics, game roleplaying or religious?

Feel free to borrow her, TBoxer20. I'll add a little more about her down here:

Rashima has a cousin named Tarif who accompanies her to the wineshop where she dances. She also works at her aunt's husband's cousin's bakery during the afternoon. The wineshop's owner is called Farouk.

She is attending training sessions at the Istanbul Rashoud clinic and is being approached by Utopia as the 'face' for its Middle-Eastern publicity campaign.

She is a very devout Muslim but also very independent and street-smart - she's not a great fighter, but she's a dirty one, and she can hold her own against the average street-thug even without Tarif along. Here's some stats for him as a nova himself:

History

Tarif al-Hariti is the bodyguard and chaperone of his more famous cousin Rashima ‘Veil’ al-Hariti, having been a nova for six months and more after erupting in the middle of a terrorist attack in Istanbul. He is a trained paramedic with many contacts in the ancient city, but as few resources as Rashima. Of average looks, he is a rugged man with greatly increased strength and stamina, as well as a talent for tending to medical matters. His intelligence belies his lack of education and street smarts, though Rashima has managed to pound a bit of etiquette into him.

Both cousins are black-haired, brown-eyed and tall, with triangular faces. Rashima is much prettier than Tarif though.

I hope this helps you, TBox, and I'm flattered you want to use a PC of mine as an NPC.

My point is that she is taking something that is subjective, and highly induvigalized. In this case knowing how "evil" your "sins", without knowing the "sin".

She is taking a subjective stance, and making it objective.By, judging one right, and anohter wrong.Isn't that being a bit objective?

But more to the point,it is not based off what said third party thinks. But what she thinks.

The enhancement is completely subjective. It is essentially a mass of information filtered through her own understanding of Christian morality. Which means, YES, she will judge someone in terms others will consider prejudiced or unfair. It was purchased as an enhancement because ultimately it is very limited, only giving her an opinion to work from. The same thing would occur if you were a telepath, examined everything in a person's mind you considered wrong, and then made an opinion. Same thing here, except she can't choose what to read, can't see the whole picture, and only gets a summarized impression. It all happens subconsciously.

Basically she is reading the 'psychic residue' of life on an individual. Due to her eruption she can only interpret what the residue of certain actions actually mean. The sins. Everything else is nonsensical so it's discarded. She can understand those 'sins' and judges based on her opinion of them.

Remember, during eruption you, for a split second, are GOD and then you slap down some restrictions on yourself. All of this is done subconsciously. She slapped on those restrictions that she can only recognize the 'sin' aspect of a persons aura or experiences.
Sounds pretty simple to me.

Sounds simple to me too but I thought I'd add a little more.

Try looking into In Nomine from Steve Jackson Games. Its available in either the original In Nomine translation (pretty hilarious take on religion if your tastes run to the dark and droll) or the GURPs adaptation. Look specifically at the abilities of the Malekim. Straightforward description and simple mechanics as I recall. In PU terms its really nothing more than an esoteric variety of telepathy.

If that is the case (she can see your precise sin), it is too powerful as an enhancement. Its Petercognition with a weakness.

I would imagine it depends on the depth of knowledge gleaned and the player's indicated there's little.

"His hands run red with the blood of murder."

Who dies, by what means, in what circumstance and where's the body? Looking at someone and knowing they've committed murder, whether by their own definition or yours, is of limited value in general. I could imagine specific circumstance wherein it might be advantageous and others where it means nothing.

It is very much something I'd expect the ST to have a field day with. For example, I could run into someone and because of this ability, feel that he is a filthy person who has sullied his soul with years of violence. What I wouldn't know is that he's repented, turned his life around, and is donating every second of his spare time to helping less fortunate people. Later in the story, it would come back to haunt me when I discovered this.

As it is, she doesn't get any real specifics. No names, no faces, no memories. Just a summary impression.

History

Regan McLachlan is the ultimate librarian. She is mega-intelligent, with perfect visual recall and enhanced visual learning processes. On the downside, her other senses are somewhat dulled, especially hearing. She has a disorder that's related to high-functioning autism known as Aspergers' Syndrome (it's a real disability) and has two emotional states - detached or in overload. Her mind is organised like a library, and she has basic telepathy, with a knack for literally reading a person's mind.

She erupted after hitting researcher's block while writing a history assignment. Combined with her natural depression about her looks and doubts about her intelligence - enhanced by her husband's abusive behaviour - she developed an extraordinary mind and visual memory, heightened visual perception and some telepathic abilities. She developed near-deafness and other dulled senses as the cost for her new abilities.

Shortly after she erupted, her husband took a sledgehammer to her left knee, as she was late home from her mundane job as an under-librarian. Permanently lame as a result, she needs crutches and has pins and a leg-brace in her knee just to get around the house.

She has joined Team Tomorrow as an information analyst and archivist, serving in the Asia/Pacific team since she comes from Australia. Quiet and reserved, she tends to rely on her intellect rather than her heart, and has little trust for men outside of T2M.

Recently she has begun to become more active and has revealed stronger abilities than expected. Her eyesight has gotten so acute that she can look through objects, while she is able to animate books in a library, transmit herself through text and manipulate the age of objects, possibly even people. Her psychic powers have been enhanced, as has her stamina

Uh, actually, the way I protray Endeavor's resources, she'd be a 6. Just because she not has a HUGE inheritance, she also has a large paycheck coming in every couple of weeks, and massive royalties. Not to mention if she wasn't secretly squirreling away money, she'd probably have every excuse to be a 6. Right now I'd place her at 5. Once I spring the surprise, She'll have every reason to be a 6.

I've started incorporating some of the stuff from Adventure as rules in the Aberrant game I'm running. Mainly the more extensive Super-Science rules, but I've also been allowing the Gadget background for Players.

I have been seriously considering allowing the upgrades beyond a Background of 5 that they suggest in it (ie Followers is upgraded to Legions, Influence becomes Word of Law).

Also, the One-Man-Army knack is a fantastic Mega-Dex enhancement.

I disagree. Even Orzaiz and Anna Devries, both arguably billionaires, have resources of 5. 5 is the limit in the game. Therefore, no higher than 5 even if you think you should have it. It's like saying you have Q11 or Willpower 20.
