IC: STARFINDER: HEROES FOR HIRE - EPISODE ONE "YOU MEET IN A TAVERN..."

STARFINDER GM

Gorunta nodded - choosing to pretend he didn't hear Jordayn use the phrase 'my good Vesk' - and went down. The heavy thumps of his footsteps down the stairs were the prisoner's first warning before their massive captor appeared and started searching and stripping the prisoners of everything but their clothes. Weapons, remaining credit chips, etc. They were getting out of this with their lives and what scraps of dignity were left, and that should be enough for them, the Vesk judged.

AT THE SHIP

Fleng looked up at the ship one hand in his pocket playing with his prize. He wasn't an expert or anything but for the life of him he couldn't tell where the ship was from.

When the elf came down the ramp all giggles and smiles, Feng scowled. It was the dipshit that he had been following all morning from pet store to pet store.

Jordayn sauntered down the ramp, a friendly grin on his face as he bowed his head towards the goblin and the half-orcs behind him. "Good day, gents. What can I do for you? I may have seen some colleagues of yours, if you're interested."

“Yeah yeah, are they still alive?”

IN THE SHIPS HOLD

Gorunta had finished removing the useful gear and weapons from the captives and making sure that they were well tied up. Three of them were conscious but the female Halforc that had been shocked repeatedly was still out, but she was breathing.

Gorunta paused at the table were he was looking over the loot he had taken and watched as the Kasathas, Ninura, entered the hold and went past the captives, paying no mind to Gorunta. She went to the back wall and touched a panel, at her touche a door that hadn't been there before slid open revealing another small room attached to the hold which she entered.

Gorunta moved that way and saw her at a control panel she still Ignored his presence. He studied the room and soon came to the realization that there was a small one person Airlock with access to the top of the ship.

“It's only big enough for one at a time. You can follow me if you want.” Ninura finally said as she stepped into the lock and was whisked upwards.

Spoiler

Loot from these captives ; 1 Plasma gun (Redstar), 2 Laser Pistols (Coronas), 1 Shock Truncheon (Static), 2 comm units, 1 level 3 Signal Jammer,  Credit chips with the following balances ,(17, 22, 25, 27, 84)

IN THE CAVERN OF THE PYRAMID

Clevus was now sure that the Ysoki was making fun of him. He looks out at the lavender skinned near humans tending their charges. “What, those slaves? I suppose so for as long as they are useful.

Evana and Sunshine can now make out better what the mean and women are doing and now the yelping and barking became clearer as the elevator halted on the ground.

Nearby there were several near-human slaves, of the same species which dominate the surface world, milling about feeding and water countless puppies and canines of all shapes and sizes. Thousands of them being held within the ruins in little electrified pens. Each pen tended by 2 or 3 of the slaves.

"Clevus," Evana's tone and accent went akin to a disappointed pet owner.  "You know this is seriously messed up, right?  What are you trying to accomplish here, hon, capture all the puppies and offer them up to some ancient buried god or goddess?  And after the ancient battle between cats and dogs is concluded, what next?  A war on cooties?"

She breathed an exasperated sigh, lowering her head and rubbing her temples.  This whole job was getting more and more complicated by the minute.  "I, have to admit, I thought you'd be better than all of this.  You're a smart man, articulate, logical, powerful... surely I would think you could see how utterly... inane all this is."  She waved her hands, as if to completely dismiss the lunacy of all she was witnessing.  "You know what?  I can't.  I just... I don't even right now.  Clevus, dear, we came for Queensie, hopefully you still plan on letting us leave with her?  I mean, seriously, there is no way I'm tending puppies in these heels, and this dress?  It's silk spun from genuine Irrisen rime weavers.  Yeah, so not going to happen."

"A little worse for wear, especially the poor half-orc lady," Jordayn admitted wryly, directing his words at the spokes-goblin, but keeping an eye on the muscle behind him. "She did seem rather menacing and we reacted impulsively. But they are all breathing yet, and unarmed. We're on a job, as you are, and didn't see the need for any... drastic outcomes, shall we say? Would you - or rather, your employer - like them returned?"

Upon hearing the word "slaves," Sunshine tongued the safety off on her hidden pistol again. She let Evana do the talking while she made mental note of where the controls to the elevator were, as well as where the good cover spots were and who looked like they were armed. It could still end without laser fire, but upon realizing how widespread this operation was, she was heading into the land of "I wish a motherfucker would."

AT THE PYRAMID

“I'm sure that Clevus would accede to your wishes my dear, were it up to him.”

The voice, high pitched and raspy came from the shadows, followed a moment later by a being that sent chills down the spines of our heroes.

It was two meters tall with a hunched back as if bent by a great weight. In form it was somewhat like Clevus, a felinoid, thin and withered seemingly hairless, it's large eyes a solid black. It was clad in ill fitting cloths and walking with a stylized staff with the head of the cat god carved onto the end.

Spoiler

Sunshine and Evana must make a will save DC 14 If you fail you are paralyzed with fear from an overwhelming sense of dread.

AT THE SHIP

Gorunta stepped onto the top of the ship, he saw Ninura at the edge looking over the side. He came up behind her.

“Yeh much as I could care less, my boss wants the idiots back.” came a squeaky voice from below.

Gorunta looked over and could just make out the two Half orcs but not the speaker who must have been in front of them he looked at Ninura and was about to ask what she was doing, when she jumped.

Spoiler

People at the ship roll initiative.

The sudden wave that overcame was a sensation unlike any she'd felt before.  She tried to fight it, to let the knots in her stomach and the tenseness of her muscles cease, but it was no use.  A power sense of dread overcame her, strong enough that she feared it may turn her ice blue hair white.

She stood there in rapt horror, unable to move.

UNDER THE CASINO

"Muahahaha" The Ancient Feline Horor laughs at the terror in the two adventurers eyes as Clevus grabs both of them by the arm. "Come Clevus I think we shall wait no longer, the alignment is close enough. Bring these two to the temple so they may witness the resurrection of a god before they die."

"As you command master" answers Clevus.

AT THE SHIP

Ninura drops from the top of the ship landing behind the two Halforc in a stylized fighting stance her claws snick out two inches of deadly  chromed metal.

Fleng and his men, caught off guard, spins at the sudden appearance of the Kasathas.

"Frick - " Sunshine comes to, as she's dragged along by Clevus. She looks around and decides that there was not a single millimeter of this that she wanted any part of. She works something around in her mouth, then spits out...

... a Gods Damned laser pistol, catching it with her free hand and popping off in Clevus' leg.

Spoiler

(Swift action to transfer gun to hand, then taking a surprise attack against Clevus. Acrobatics check vs. DC 20+ Clevus' CR...)

Sunshine Acrobatics check: 1D20+14 = [15]+14 = 29

If that succeeds, trick attack kicks in and he's flat footed. Then the actual attack itself:

Sunshine attack roll.: 1D20+3+4 = [7]+3+4 = 14

Damage, if it hits: Sunshine laser pistol damage: 2D4+1D8 = [2, 2]+[8] = 12

Clevus' registered the sudden movement of Sunshine but had no time to react as the laser beam drilled into his thigh.

The pain was excruciating and his brain told him to scream but system shock made that and impossibility. Instead he slumped up against Evana who caught his wait and gave Sunshine a look.

Up ahead the evil cat thing continued on toward the stepped pyramid his sonorous voice droning on about the glories of it's goddess, oblivious to what was happening behind it.

Spoiler

The path you are on is flanked by ruins of the once great city, undead cat guy is about 20 yards ahead (he was walking fast) there are plenty of places to hide but many of the ruins are filled with dogs and puppies and zombie like slaves. Clevus is unconscious and at 0 hp he could die if not treated.

If Clevus had a weapon, Sunshine nabbed it and tossed it to Evana. Then she motioned to move towards a hiding spot. Once relatively safe, she whispered, "okay, you wanna try finding this dog in the middle of all this, or you want to make for the elevator? I'd hate to go through all this for nothing - " She shook a little saliva off of her laser pistol. "But I also hate being dead or sacrificed, or dead after being sacrificed."

Evana's expression was a mournful one, Clevus was a nice guy.  "I'm pretty sure we're screwed either way," she admitted.

She slid off her heels amidst the barking and the chaos of all the cages and meandering slaves.  "Dog or no, we need to get the hell out of here and get the others.  We can't very well save this dog if we're dead.  Let's go."

She motioned with a nod in the direction towards the elevator.  Sunshine didn't wait to argue but there was an awkward pause for a moment as they silently looked, waiting for the other to go first.  "Oh, no, you got the gun, you go first."

AT THE SHIP

Gorunta stepped onto the top of the ship, he saw Ninura at the edge looking over the side. He came up behind her.

Yeh much as I could care less, my boss wants the idiots back.” came a squeaky voice from below.

Gorunta looked over and could just make out the two Half orcs but not the speaker who must have been in front of them he looked at Ninura and was about to ask what she was doing, when she jumped.

Ninura drops from the top of the ship landing behind the two Halforc in a stylized fighting stance her claws snick out two inches of deadly  chromed metal.

Fleng and his orcs, caught off guard, spin at the sudden appearance of the Kasathas.

Jexa raised an eyebrow in surprise at Ninura's sudden, apparently aggressive, appearance.

"What the hells is your problem?" she said to the four-armed woman as she readied herself to dodge the poodu that was about to hit the oscillator.

Jordayn mentally facepalmed himself in frustration, then paused for an instant, making sure he hadn't actually done so physically. What had been going well enough had just turned sideways with the gods looking down in amusement. All for the sake of a genetically engineered pet. Arshea, what do you have in store for your priest?

"I apologize, … Any thing else he was going to say was lost as the ships exterior speakers blared to life.

Back in the cockpit, Echo had turned the ship's defense grid on as well as the external PA system. a turret slide out of a recessed port on the belly of the ship and swiveled to point at the Goblin and his crew. A bored-sounding voice emerges from speakers near the airlock doors drowning out what Jordayn had been trying to say.

"Stand down and play nice, or I will blow a new crater into the spot where you guys are standing."

Gorunta cursed a string of Vesk and other specis choice words as he drew a sidearm and took aim at the Goblin. What the hell had gotten into the four armed freak anyway?

Ninura freezes claws raised to slash and looks up at the ship, her eyes wide with fear, directly into camera which makes it look like she is looking directly at Echo. Then with a deft move she spins and makes a series of cartwheels away from the ship and the three native thugs.

Feng was cought flat footed but he wasn't new to this sort of game and acted according ly. “Get Em!” He shouted as he drew his blaster and threw hime self side ways while a shimmering field surrounded him blurring his position making it difficult to target him. The two halforcs grunted and both drew their weapons and aimed at the cartwheeling Kasathas.

After a series of tight escapes, running through alleys and close calls, Sunshine and Evana approached the ship.

"Well, that was a heck of a series of tight escapes, running through alleys and close calls, but I think we're - home free." The door to the docking pad slid opened and they both stopped short at the scene playing out on the pad. “Or not...” Sunshine muttered as she brought her blaster up.

"Oh, by the bloody Hells..." Evana grumbled as she took in what she was seeing.  She balanced a hand on Sunshine's head as she tried to slip her shoe back on.  "Because why, for a moment would I assume anything on their end hadn't gotten all mucked up."

She looked as the alien girl did cartwheels away from the ramp.  "I'm not being paid enough for this..."

Spoiler

Ok this was heavily edited to make story sense since someof you seemed to forget that we were in combat and where your characters were.

The two half orcs are armed with large caliber slug throwers. They easy to hit with 10 in both ACs they have only 12 HP they were surprised so could take no action except drawing their weapons.

The Goblin , while surprised was able to take some actions aside from drawing his weapon He is dodging and activated some sort of defense field. He has an  EAC 14 and a KAC16 he has 18HP

Jordayn and Jexa are on the ships ramp. Gorunta is On the roof of the ship. Echo is in the cockpit, Ninura is cartwheeling toward Evana and Sunshine.

"Ohh and the tension ratchets up," Echo chuckled. "Standard fetchquest turns into a Lashunta standoff."

She thumbs the PA system on again. "Sheesh, relax everyone. You want your people. We want to give you your people. Just no funny biz! That is all."

The android switched over to the internal intercoms, "Hey, Gorunta. Everything okay with the prisoner transfer? It's looking...kind of bizarrely hair-trigger out there."

The two halforcs look at the crew of the ship then at each other and then they simultaneously toss their guns on the ground and put their hands up.

"Oh for the love of..." the Goblin growls as he reappears and throws his gun down in disgust. "Stupid orcs." He grumbles raising his own hands.

"Wicked. Now hang on while I gab with my crewmates." She walked towards the others, frowning at a ding that had appeared on her ship in the time she was away.

"Big religious temple underground. We barely escaped. That's where all the pets and cats and dogs are, and I think they're planning some kinda mass sacrifice. We might wanna step on it if we want to get paid. We got a skiff or something I can pilot to get us there in time?"

With a determined stride Evana marched up the ramp to the ship, hopping in the P-Way as he removed her heels once more and was pulling the straps of her dress down past her shoulders until it was held in place by her chest.  She slammed her palm on the switch to her quarters.  Garunta passed her briefly, his business coming to close with the 'hostages'.

"What's gotten into you?" he grumbled out as she stormed past.

"Not now," she said sternly with enough coldness in her voice to let him know she was not in a great mood.  "I'm going to get my gun.  Tell Sunshine to wait for me.  Please and thank you."

Spoiler

Evana is changing into her battle gear.  Don't wait for me to post that she's arrived, just assume she changes and meets up with everyone.

Flying through the city  the heroes almost immediately picked up pursuers. Two black aircars with the logo of the casino with goblins hanging out firing lasers and guns at them.

Sunshine flew as if she were a madwoman dancing to a beat in her head the pursuing cars matching her move for move.

In and out of the tall skyscrapers, over and under bridges and walkways, the flying cars zipped and zoomed making incredible death defying turns dives and climbs all the while the riders of both exchanged fire back and forth beams and rounds pinging the bodies of the vehicles. Gorunta good a good shot in and hit the main propulser of the lead car causing it to drop from the race trailing smoke. Then Sunshine in a series of impossible zig zagging flips and turns made a cut between two building that didn't have space to pass a sheet of paper between and the other aircar slammed into the alley way shearing it's control surfaces off and cartwheeling into the ground below in a ball of flame, it's passenger compartment separating at the last moment as it's safety systems took over.

Arriving at the casino our heroes made their way to the elevator and down into the darkness below.

Shaking off the adrenaline of the wild chase to the Casino, Jordayn retied his longish hair in a knot to keep it from his face, then drew his compact shock pistol, as inane elevator music played in counterpoint to the danger and darkness they were about to subject themselves to for the sake of a pet so they could get paid. Well, that and to stop a foul ritual to empower a dark god or corrupt a forgotten one.

Getting a quick update and details from Evana and Sunshine, the priest frowned. The small pistol in his hand hardly seemed dangerous, but it wasn't the main way he would contribute. "Now, I know we were hired just to retrieve Queensie, but since we're already going to be down there, I hope no one is adverse to disrupting a dark ritual laid out before us?" Jordayn asked. "Seems like the least we could do for all the trouble they've caused us already."

"Sounds like the Pyramid would be where they would enact the ritual, for sympathetic and arcane reasons, but did either of you see anything that might be anchor-points for the ritual outside of it? It sure would be convenient if we could break their ritual and take off with Queensie without having to go into the middle of that thing."

"Disrupting a dark ritual? Hmm.. let me check." Jexa said as she held out her hand an a glowing wireframe was drawn in then filled in with what appeared to be pixels, leaving a small device in her palm. It emitted a very slow beeping and had a needle resting all the way to the left that was barely moving.

"Hmm.. let me check my Giva-A-Shit-Ometer." she said as she slapped the side of the device a few times and gave is a shake. Jexa cringed slightly and shook her head. "Yeeeah. No. Nothing's registering." she said with a shrug as the device reverted back to a wire frame and disappeared.

"We are here for a dog...-thing. or whatever the hell it is. That's it. Get the dog. Get paid. That simple." she said as she caught a look from Jordayn. He was standing there, his usual smile gone and his head tilted just so slightly to a side with a 'Really?' expression,

"What? No. Don't give me that look. Were for a dog. A fucking DOG, and NOT to pick a fight with some 'Dark God' and it's minions. I mean, I sure as hell don't remember the 'Divine Combat' clause in the contract." she said, almost pleadingly to Jordyn who stood there, looking at her with the same expression as before.

"Oh come on! This isn't our fight and we sure as hell are not cut out for this shit. We are NOT some sort of heroes! We are self-serving mercs! At best! We can hardly work together or do anything right as a team. The series of fuckups known as 'today' proves that."

Evana considered saying something, but she could see that Jordayn was getting much farther with Jexa without a single word as he stood there, un-moving and his expression unwavering. Jexa's antenna went limp and she turned, resting her head against a vertical beam of the elevator with a sigh. The lashunta closed her eyes and kicked at beam hard several times with an angry growl and then suddenly stopped. She lifted her head, her antenna rising back up.

"Fine. Fuck it." she said as he held out her hand and her Arc Pistol slide into her palm from it's secret compartment. Ninura who no one had noticed was even with them, leaned over Jexa from behind and wrapped her in a four armed hug. Jexa noticed almost immediately that the Kasathas was naked again.

"Why do you gotta make shit weird?" she sighed at the hug from the naked Kasathas.

A few moments later the elevator emitted a *Ding!* and the doors opened. "Let's go ruin a Dark God's day." she said as they exited the elevator, weapons ready a resolve on their faces.

Spoiler

Jexa used Token Spell to create her Giveashitometer.

"It's going to be pretty hard to take a Dark God who wants to ritually sacrifice dogs seriously," Echo remarks placidly as she checks her arc pistol over. "What's the endgame there? Secure a cat homeworld? Dominate the cat-galaxy? Rise to become a cat god? Are insane psycho evil folks even trying anymore?"

She cobbled together a few pieces of music from the Allnet and started playing the result from her rig. Anything to cover up the ungodly elevator music.

"Cat cat cat cat," she chanted, rocking her head up and down.

They stepped down the hall way, slo-mo style, fanned out to make sure nothing got the jump on them.  She slid her pistol out from it's thigh holster and the accompanying blade on the opposite side.  She was in her purple, pleather body suit with the front zipped down just enough to remind everyone 'yup, that's Evana' and a heeled boots were just simply not practical for any woman except those that might find themselves in major roles in a space adventure.  "Bitch tried to sacrifice me," she said coldly, her eyes narrowed with vengeance gleaming in them.  Sunshine cleared her throat.  "Right, I was getting to that.  Her too."

"This isn't about respect.  I'm about to get street up in this bitch."  She sighed, pissed off.  "It's always some cult trying to rim their way into their gods favor with some easy win play.  I tried to be nice, I tried to be civil, but nooooo... they just had to get all uppity.  Diplomacy is done.  Now it's war."

She turned her pistol to it's side and clicked off the safety with her thumb.  It spoke to her 'safty's off baby, oh yeah' it said in what sounded like a seductive Isaac Hays voice.  "And after this... we are getting fucked up.  Like, you don't even know."

Jexa listened t the others, but kept an eye out, only to stop in her tracks, her antenna perked up slightly, hinting a quizzical expression that only those familiar with Lashunta might pick up. She turned her head to look at Evana.

"Sacrificed? Don't you need to be, you know, a virgin, to be sacrificed though?" she asked with a confused look on her face.

Jordayn snorted in dark humour. "No, there is no need to be... pristine to be sacrificed, Jexa." The handsome half-elf smiled wryly as he eyed the empty pens then the arcane lights emanating from the pyramid. "Likely many or most of the canines have sire or bore offspring, after all. It's the blood, the lives taken - or given - that give the ritual power. In some cases, depending on the ritual, and in who - or what - it is dedicated to, the unsullied can be a greater source of power. In others, those who have lived, loved, and lost, provide even greater sustenance." He shot Jexa a quick grin. "If virginity was a prerequisite to be sacrificed, I'm sure Arshea would be unmatched in the number of ardent adherents."

It was eerie walking through ancient ruined city, the distant thunder adding to the effect since they were under ground. Evana and Sunshine noted the now empty pens and wondered it they were in time.

It took only a few minutes to reach the place where they had escaped Clevus's clutches at the edge of the ruin. Before them stretched a rubble strewn plain with a rough path leading toward the pyramid in the distancethe party stopped and stared in awe.

The pyramid stood between a quarter and half a mile away and rose almost three hundred feet it's top almost brushing the roof of the cavern. Around the top of the great ziggurat our heroes could see what looked like a revolving cloud but inspection with electronic devices revealed the truth. The cloud was mad up of thousands of floating canines!

Energy, magical in nature flowed around and through the hapless puppies which were fortunately in some sort of state of suspended animation. Below the dogs other figures could be seen on the face of the pyramid, among them Clevus and his drow witch, who could be seen laughing and pointing back at the heroes. Clevus raised his own pair of macro glasses and looked at Evana and company, then he whirled away and climbed the few steps to the tall thin regally robed figure wearing a pope hat. That creature turn and looked back revealing the horrific mummified face of the cat priest!

The undead priest took a step toward the distant party and raised a hooked staff. The ground between the city and the pyramid began to shake and crack as mummified felinoids burst from where they had been buried by the sinking of their city millennia ago. These undead things began to sweep toward the city and our heroes joined by Clevus's Near human slaves.

The Mummy Cat-Priest raised both arms and his voice echoed throughout he whole cavern...  "Kill them! Kill them all!"

Sunshine wasn't a big fan of shooting slave labor if she could avoid it, so she concentrated on the mummies. Ancient instincts initially set her on the back foot when confronted with an army of cats, but she overcame, sighted with her pistol, and fired.

... and kept firing. Laser fire, silent except for the sound it made when it lit up on impact, lit up the underground catacomb, burning away the flesh of the undead. One closed with Sunshine, too close to shoot, so she skittered up its body, wrapping her tail around its neck, and swung herself around in a wide arc, firing laser blasts in an arc, and using her momentum to flip the mummy on its back, as she flipped an energy clip into the air and slapped it into her pistol, shooting the downed mummy without looking back, because her attention was drawn to the mob bearing down on her.

They overwhelmed her, and for a moment, Sunshine disappeared underneath the onslaught of bodies, but rather that punching or bursting free dramatically, Sunshine squeezed out the bottom, almost compressing her body in half. She rolled to safety, getting up into a surprisingly frantic run, and a moment later everyone found out why.

The grenade scattered bits of cat mummy all over, and even the ones still in one piece looked like they'd been knocked for a loop. Sunshine spat the grenade pin out of her mouth, tossing it over her shoulder.

"'Your cheeks are so big and cute, Sunshine. I just want to pinch them, Sunshine. I bet you could hold a whole bajifruit in there, Sunshine.' Or you know, something useful."

Gorunta simply grinned and laughed at the oncoming horde. All this time, silly, stupid, absurd princelings, and their genetically altered poolphins, and this nonsense. Now this was shaping up to being something actually truly worthwhile, worthy of glory. Unlike some of the others, he drew his longsword and brought it up in a two-handed grip. Unlike the others, he held no qualms about battling the slaves.

They chose to attack him and his fellows, after all, rather than fight for their freedom.

The vesk strode forward, and now, the others truly saw his brutal talents in the art of war.

The first was a blue-skinned humanoid male, with a wild look in his eyes and little remaining sign of free will. Gorunta's blade relieved him of that issue, practically bisecting him. The two corpse-halves only began to fall, while Gorunta was already spinning in motion, and the microserrated edges of his sword tore through the necks of two cat mummies, beheading them in one stroke.

He shifted his grip to one hand only, so his free hand could promptly cave in the face of a lashunta in one swift, brutal punch. A mummy and a third slave converged on him at the same time. The vesk mercenary threw his weight in one direction, body-slamming the slave to the ground, before hacking down the mummy. Finally, he delivered the coup de grace to the slave with a single, finishing stab through the belly.

He suddenly felt the weight of a number of slaves, as they tried dogpiling him at once, but his armor and scales were so tough they might as well have been using pillows. Gorunta shook his  head in sardonic amusement before grabbing one and using her to bludgeon all the others.

Echo took in a deep breath.

"Someone probably shoulda warned you guys. I have a lot of pent-up aggression, and it's been like...over an hour since I got to shoot someone."

God Mode

She moved towards the oncoming press of undead felines and wailing slaves at an unhurried pace. When they were getting uncomfortably close she held out her right hand, and a concealed pocket in the arm of her armor coughed a sleek looking pistol into it. Echo slid a HUD visor down over her eyes and synced it to her rig. Immediately the augmented-reality lit up with red outlines.

"Hooray for target-rich environments!"

The pistol shone a bright beam of light as she aimed it; a low-powered 'guidance' laser that only existed to help aim, and to ionize a path through the air. The real party started when she pressed the trigger back fully and her arc pistol discharged a blinding, blue-white electrical discharge into that ionized path. One of the mummy cats went down as its desiccated flesh and ancient wrappings caught fire from the heat, and the impact of the shot knocked it back off its feet!

From there, Echo stayed mobile, firing precision shot after shot, each one guided by the military-spec targeting AI built into her engineering rig. There were just too many to keep ahead of though, especially when the human slaves caught up with her and two tried to grab her arms and hold her still! But as their hands closed over Echo's upper arms, there were electrical CRACKS, and arcs flared from her skin to her attackers...who were flung back and fell to the ground, convulsing.

"Yeah, I don't really do the 'get grabbed' thing anymore, guys. Ah shit..."

The delay had been costly...in having to pause while her electrostatic field disposed of the slaves, Echo'd been left open for several of the cat-things to catch up with her! She backpedaled swiftly, holographic images appearing around her left arm as she extended a probe from her rig implant into a port on the side of her arc pistol. The cell was getting a bit low, but maybe it had enough left...

The first cat-mummy yowled and pounced, raking claws across her chest and down her abdomen...only to encounter the same field that the humans had. Tendrils of electricity sprang out and crawled over the attacking mummy, tearing great holes into it and setting it aflame as it fell. The others were right behind it though! Echo raised the pistol as they closed in, sidestepping just a little to get a moment where they were lined up...

Her rig lit up, its AI agent bypassing safety protocols in her weapon's controls, allowing it to dump a wildly unsafe amount of power all at once instead of in a carefully metered packet.

The cavern lit up as a blaze of actinic light erupted, and a long, buzzing crackling noise momentarily drowned out the caterwauling of the combatants. The thunderous display ended abruptly a few seconds later, leaving ears ringing and fleeting afterimages in the retinas of those too close to Echo.

She stood there with the front end of her pistol still glowing cherry-red, and popped the depleted energy cell out. Three cat-things collapsed in front of her, sporting softball-sized holes that had, for a brief moment, been perfectly aligned. With deft fingers Echo slapped a fresh cell into her arc pistol.

"But I don't WANNA go back inside yet," she smirked.
