I really miss Dead Rising, so I’m throwing my hat in the ring again. We’re not doing zombies this time, but another form of cataclysmic world ending. I’m starting the game just before the badness starts, and we’ll play through the fall of the world.

Game System: M&M 3e

Game Name: Shadows Rising

Rating: R+

Theme: Modern Apocalypse

House Rules: None yet.

Number of PCs Desired: Eh? I dunno, min 3, max 20? Something like that.

ST Posting Frequency: 1/week, maybe more if I keep my upward trend

Player Posting Frequency: 1/week during plot posts, 1/3 days during combats

Starting PC Power Level: PL 7 standard

Open to New Players: Sure

Setting Description: Life is normal. The world keeps spinning, but changes are coming, and the PCs better be ready.

What to Expect: Create a PC who is an expert or professional with survivability. They can be military or a survivalist, a scholar, mechanic, or any skilled individual. Even someone active in the SCA would be a good choice. The apocalypse will start during the first post of the game, and we’ll eventually get to Dead Rising levels of world ruination. Plan accordingly.

(No, no one may have a nuke, not even a little one.)

little more setting info would be nice.

Is everyone from where ever and we get thrown together by whatever, or are we all from the same place and possibly know each other?

Ack, sorry! I meant to include that in the initial post.

I'd prefer if PCs are in the Midwest area (any states touching Iowa) just because it'll be easier to get people together in the long run. I'm not requiring people to be from the area, but they should be around that area (whether living there, temporarily there, passing through and getting stuck), unless you have a good reason to hustle to the area in the early days of the game. I'm willing to do some lone wolves, but part of RP is doing it with others, so I think you'd have more fun in the Midwest with everyone else.

Character ties are a very good idea and I welcome people to make them.

Oh... Nevada... you should have me and Ein tell you all about Carson City sometime...

She could still be from Nevada, a stripper visiting family or collecting her stuff from some douchey ex who moved away and took all her CDs... or ther e for an audition for something... because she doesn't plan on being a stripper forever, it's just something she's doing to help pay for college... acting is where the big money is, amirite?  Imsorite...

If I'm not mistaken my character was originally from Iowa, but ended up in Nevada and then later in Texas, so it's possible to move around a bit.

Hey, if everyone wants to do the City of Sin, we can. I picked the Midwest because I'm there, rather than any real need for it to be in that region. I'm also not as familiar with Vegas as the Midwest.

Does everyone interested in playing prefer Vegas?

I'm cool with where ever.  No matter where you wanna start, my character being from somewhere else won't be an issue.  I'm cool with Nevada, but there is a lot of desert out there so the population will be low or easy to elude, so when the ZA hits, there won't be as much 'random encounters' except somewhere populated, like Las Vegas, now, moving towards Cali... yeah, we'd have a lot to deal with.

Somewhere like Iowa has a denser population stucture, cities are closer together so the possibility of going from place to place an running into a ton of zombies.

Oh, nukes are off the table, fine, fine I get that... (grumbles to himself), but what about Sharknadoes?  Can summoning a sharknado be one of our powers?

I guess, if you really want a sharknado, you can summon one.

But I want to be clear: this ISN'T a zombie apoco. I'm doing an apocalypse game, but zombies aren't the thing causing the downfall of the world.

OMG... Taylor Swift is gonna finally summon the legions of Hell...

On a serious note, these are the PCs I have ready to go in a PL10 format (PL7 versions won't be hard to make):

  • Primal
  • Jaunt
  • The Crimson Spider!

Are there any power concepts you want off the table?  Like time manipulation, teleportation, sharknado-ken, dimensional travel?  Are we also talking about hellfire and brimstone powers here (fire from the fingertips, lightning from the sky, etc...) or something more personal, like Captain America super physical type changes, or both.  We used Aberrant before, and anything went in that one, but I wanted to clarify before I decided on a concept.

I also have a chef who is always there precisely when he needs to be there... named Justin Thyme.

Temporal powers and dimensional powers will probably not be okay, mostly because the former is a headache and the latter is not thematically appropriate (and likely to end really poorly for the person anyway).  Other than that, I'm fine with any powers that bend physics over the table, so all other concepts are available.

wait this is going to turn into another supers game?

You don't have to play a super, but this game is a variant on my Dead Rising game, which was zombies and supers. So yes, supers will be part of the game.

Just to confirm, our initial PL 7 characters have no powers; are people allowed to 'reserve' points or are we intended to spend all points to start on mundane badassery, with powers starting small and growing through experience?

Stick with mundane badassery to start. I'll allow people to hold back 15 PP for the "eruption" moment, when they'll get the remaining 3 PL (and 45 more PP for powers). Powers can be big at the moment of "eruption", and I'll allow ways for people to earn more PP with background/history-filling stories and the like. Think like Damon did for his Wild Card game.

And just to be clear: since Nina seemed to be the person who really wanted to move to Vegas and she's out, we're staying in the Midwest. Unless the majority of the group wants to be elsewhere. I'm seriously easy on this point; it will only change the challenges you'll face, not eliminate them. ;)

It's realistic.  A '5' is 'Best in a Nation'.  Hell, I made a S.W.A.T. Officer at PL 7 with nothing higher than a 2 (his FGT is 6, though) in his Atts... I'm feeling completely out classed.  Allison, a survival specialist and self-defense specialist, could tear through a battalion of special forces military and barely bat an eyelash.

I gotta step up my game.  If 'regular' people are clocking 5's, 'professional' people should be at 8's or 10's.

For 90 points I used the S.W.A.T. Officer template and modified it to this:

Well, if I can help, I will.

One thing I notice wrong with both of our PCs is that we have insanely high FGT scores.  TBH we should probably have decent Close Combat(Martial Arts, Street Fighting, Boxing, etc) Skills instead, implying that our character were taught (and teach others) how to fight (FGT represents natural, not trained, talent).

It was sort of a retrospect thing I noticed once I posted my draft.  Food for thought.

Here's what I've got so far. Military veteran; sharpshooter who went into officer training and military intelligence. Took some spall from an IED and retired back to civilian life. His rank benefit is 'courtesy rank.' He doesn't actually have military rank anymore, but he can still leverage his old rank sometimes.  Still refining his Complications. Unsure if I want to model his injury as something that's worth points, or if it's just a Complication...probably the latter though.

Guys, don't worry about buying basic equipment. If you can find it rattling around in a cabinet in most houses (flashlights, etc) I'm fine with you not spending points on it. If you want a special flashlight (like a mag light that can also be used as a club or IF light), buy it. If it's something that most people have, like a cell phone, don't worry about buying it.

I may be interested later, but for now I need to see how I acclimatise back to college and get used to the workload again before I promise to any new games. Just may not have the time.

Totally understandable. You'd be welcome to join later. :)

I'm still trying to decide on a concept.  Cop, thug, military, smart ass... all power houses or paragon specs... I've done it all.  I want something fresh, new, something I haven't done in awhile.  I need some help coming up with something.
