What is Black Crusade?

the game of 40k set in the Screaming Vortex, a sector of Space where the membrane-thin abyss that separates realspace from the Immaterium has rent, allowing the pure Chaos of creation and Destruction to spill into three-dimensional existence. Those pitiful servants of the Corpse God back on terra call you renegade, apostate, traitor. The truth is you are one of the few audacious souls who dare to forge their own path to glory.

Followers of a god of pestilence and decay.

Hm. You actually managed to find a science fiction pitch I'm not into. :)

But I will watch with interest!

Well, some of them are like that. The plague fleets and pestilent brotherhoods that venerate Father Nurgle love to spread diseases in his wake. But there are many other powers of chaos.

Not interested in *being* the follower or not interested in *punching* the follower?

Oh so much punching. And blasting. And hacking. And exploding. Chaos spends as much time (if not more) in various internicene feuds between daemons and their followers as the pathetic servants of the Corpse God.

I dunno if I can really grasp a character who can devote themself to a power like that. It's a kind of madness that seems like it would annihilate 'roleplaying' and devolve into caricreature.

That's a limitation on my part though, a boundary of my own imagination. Which is why I will watch with so much interest, to see what you guys can make of it.

To be fair, the entire premise of the Warhammer 40k universe is absurd. It started in the 80's as a combination punk-rock sci-fi skirmish mixed with parodies of Thatcher-era authoritarianism. It only got nuttier from there as the kids who didn't get the parody and just thought it was cool grew up and took over with it at face value. In my (not-so) humble opinion, if you're taking it seriously, you're doing it wrong.

This is a setting where over-the-top last stands, ultraviolence, utterly improbably armor and weapons, and melee combat with swords and shields (powered or chainsaws) between knights in powered plate armor is a common sight. There isn't anything that is remotely realistic about this setting. It's a crazy and awesome and governed by the Rule of Cool.

From an in-universe perspective, though the focus is on servants of the Dark Gods, plenty of the renegade characters have no desire to serve the Ruinous Powers, instead being out to serve their own agendas. Indeed, plenty of human characters may start out completely unaware of the existence of the dark gods.

That said, if it ain't your cuppa tea, no worries.

If I get three peeps interested, I think we can try to take this forward.

For reference, the only book I have is the main BC book, so that's what we'll be using.

And though you're playing the bad guys of the setting, the game uses the idea of Compacts. These are actual binding agreements between the renegades as to what Grand Endeavor they're focused on. It's not just some phoney-baloney promise to be broken as soon as everyone's backs are turned, but it is actually enforced by the will of the Dark Gods. There are mechanical benefits to working to get the objectives completed, and similarly, there are mechanical drawbacks to telling the rest of the group to get bent and doing your own thing at cross purposes. These benefits take the form of Infamy and Corruption. Infamy is a measure of how much glory, prestige, repute, and, well, infamy a character has among the renegades of the Vortex. Corruption measures the attention of the dark gods and the occasinally-beneficial changes and mutations that their attentions bring. Too much corruption before an appropriate level of Infamy leads to a descent into a maddened mutant spawn.

So. Play the bad guys!
