It had the right elements of a Godzilla movie, assembled insultingly, as they turned it into a human interest/love story about some idiot. It was a damn shame when everyone in the movie got out-acted by Godzilla, who displayed more emotion and commanded more respect. Ken Watanabe was passable, but after about halfway, it was obvious his heart was no longer in it. Script was terrible, and the biggest damn sin was it was billed as a Godzilla Movie... 2 hours 3 minutes, he's on the screen maybe 20 minutes total, and a good portion of that is him fighting in a window of a news broadcast. I was very glad I saw it alone, because with my medications, I did not have control of my mouth, and I was bluntly honest about it. At best a 3/10, and that's quite generous. SkyLion Posted May 29, 2014 Author Share Posted May 29, 2014 I mostly agree with you, though I enjoyed watching the film. ,, Bryan Cranston was fantastic, but his death felt odd and anticlimactic...they make it seem like he is going to pull through, then a couple scenes later it's like, nope...zippin' up the body-bag. I LOVE Ken Watanabe, but he was criminally underutilized...and while Aaron Taylor-Johnson IS actually a fine actor, the script gave him little to-do and he pretty much survived/got where the story needed him to be through luck/fiat. Same goes for Elizabeth Olsen...a fine actress with little to do. ,, I didn't mind the teased-out reveal of the monsters...a glimpse here, a tail there...I thought that showed remarkable restraint actually (unlike say, Pacific Rim), and the effects of the creatures themselves were just super photo-realistically top-notch. I just wish that they could have skipped the four-quadrant lame love story, and just had the main through line human characters been a team-up between Cranston and Watanabe. If it had been made by an actual Japanese creative team that respected the earlier Toho films, that would have been worth watching. ,, Hey, I know it's reckless optimism on my part, but as long as I'm wishing for the impossible... For my money, Guillermo del Toro did an excellent job depicting Kaiju in Pacific Rim. It just wasn't a true Kaiju movie, in which the humans are secondary characters at best. ,, AFA "true" Kaiju movies done by Hollywood, the only thing that ICR that even came close was the Michael Bay Transformers movies. <Spits to clear mouth of foul taste.> Even then, those movies were still only 50-50 on the focus between the aliens & the humans. ,, That said, IIRC the Japanese did make what was said to be a decent live-action version of Space Battleship Yamato. I know for certain that their live-action adaptation of the Death Note manga/anime franchise did pretty well too. So perhaps we might finally see a decent Gojira movie one of these days. Personally, I didn't mind the movie but I'm not a Godzilla nut. I honestly thought that it was one of the most visually beautiful monster movies ever done, though. There were some scenes that just had me staring at the screen thinking, Gorgeous. ,, Agreed on how excellent the scenery & how the Kaijus looked - that version of Gojira looked like it could've come right out of a Toho movie set. The fact that modern CGI made him look like an actual living creature instead of the old "actor in a rubber monster suit" was the sweetest of icings. ,, AFA the "monster>man in amounts of screen time" issue?
