Mutants & Masterminds: Heroes United - [Heroes United] Issue 2: Rising Stones

It was a cloudy day in the park, but still it was nice, all things considered. Pepole were going about much as always, but little did anyone know this peaceful morning would soon be shattered by an inhuman threat from below.

The first indication all was not right was a low level quake, enough to be felt, but there was no damage, only some spooked animals. The second indication was when dozens of people came screaming out of one of the buildings, inly a minute before the building collapsed. Emergency responders quickly began to head in, and then a whole section of the Northern part of Central park just collapsed into a yawning pit. Within five minutes another building crashed to the ground, and from the rubble came dozens of humanoid figures, made of living stone. They killed indiscriminately, but they weren't the worst. Monsters of molten lava set fire to everything they touched, and soon if they had their way everything would be aflame. What civil service was nearby was doing what they could to contian the growing threat, but theywere outmatched, undergunned, and outmanned.

One bit of good news did however become evident, before one of the firetrucks that had responed was destroyed, it directed the hose at one of the magma creatures, the cold water causing it to explode when it was sprayed.

More people would die, What New York City needed right now were its heroes.

The clothing in this era was amazing. Jael couldn’t get over the textures and colors: the tiny seams and invisible stitching. It was all insanely perfect, so much so when she found a shirt with a fraying hem it was almost a relief. Jael could touch them for hours, trailing her fingers over the softest materials she’d ever felt in her life.

,,

And shoes! Like the clothing, it was hard to comprehend how they had changed over the centuries. The nobles had worn finally made shoes but these modern shoes were available in mass to anyone, and in a quality would put the nobles’ finest to shame. For a woman, the possibilities were limitless, so long as you had the capital and the tolerance for discomfort.

,,

The staggering numbers of items available to her were shocking. Jael couldn’t go grocery shopping by herself because she got overwhelmed by all the stuff. She wandered the stores, touching, smelling, and tasting everything and that was a problem for some reason. Shopping for clothing was easier; women were allowed to be picky and touch their potential clothing repeatedly. The leggy blonde fit today’s beauty standards and she didn’t even have to contend with sizing issues; almost everything she liked worked well on her lean, athletic frame. It still took her hours to find a top or skirt she wanted more than anything else in the store. Andrey had said she could buy more than one at a time but Jael wasn’t sure she could. How could she stop herself if she let herself have more than one?

,,

Her consideration of a blood-red boyfriend’s cardigan—whatever that was beyond a sweater—was cut short when the ground shook under her feet. Mildly annoyed that her shopping by being interrupted by random tectonics, Jael glanced up and deeper into the store. She was just in time to see a plume of smoke and dust puff into the air in the middle of menswear. “I don’t think that’s supposed to happen,” she muttered as the gray-haired woman two racks over shrieked and took off at a run for the doors.

,,

Jael wove her way through the stands to see what she was dealing with. A gaping hole straight down had opened in the ground. Sinkhole. Her initial thought was proved wrong when she saw movement at the bottom. “Surtr?” she murmured but shook that thought away as the first of the magmamen came into view.

,,

The blonde woman glanced up, grimacing when she saw the low ceilings. At the same time, the pit’s expansion took out one of the main supports in the building. Jael backpedalled, annoyed, as a substantial part of the ceiling collapsed. The rest of the building started to come down; most of the others had fled and the blonde woman started to follow. She just about broke her damned ankle in the four-inch hells as she started to run; snarling curses in her birth language, she peeled the shoes off her feet and ran barefoot.

,,

Outside and with room to move, she finally could shift. The change came with effort, as it always had; there was still a lingering bitterness that she was growing in the middle form instead of shrinking into it. Would she ever recover what They had taken from her?

,,

A problem for another day. Her clothing and purse disappeared as, between one step and the next, Jael’s lean ‘California golden girl’ form became a massive black form. Onlookers couldn’t be faulted for thinking for a moment that she’d become an elephant because wolves normally didn’t stand 12 feet at the shoulder. Silver-gray eyes swung back to the doorway just as the building collapsed completely into a red, glowing pit of hell.

,,

Jael was no structural engineer but that didn’t seem to be very good. Before her eyes, the building, all the expensive clothing and shoes, her expensive shoes, and anyone unfortunate enough to be trapped inside were all slagged, melted or burnt by the magma. Jael looked around quickly, unsure of what to do but that question was answered by the people staring at her or into the burning pit, lost to the horror. “Hey!” she snapped, her voice perfectly normal and human despite her canine jaws. “Move your asses! Don’t be here!” Whether her words made sense or whether it was because they came from a twelve-foot talking wolf, people scattered.

,,

Turning, Jael watched the magnamen begin to invade. For a second, she wasn’t sure what to do, only that she should do something. Her instinct was to run; she liked a hot meal but magma wasn’t on her menu. Andrey would want her to help these people and she owed him enough to try. It wasn’t like it could really hurt her; the worst they could do was kill her.

,,

Her black muzzle tipped to the sky and she sang her song of challenge. It was the best she could do – draw them all to her and hope that Andrey had some way of dealing with them. The closest of the men turned to her, fury burning his in lava eyes. Jael pulled her lips back from her teeth before jerking forward and snapping at the magmaman. The heat was intense but she ignored it. Her teeth missed the first three strikes but the fourth hit, and Jael bit down with all her prodigious strength. Blood hotter than fire splashed over her tongue and mouth but she closed her jaws harder against the pain. The magmaman went limp and Jael dropped him, pleased with herself. But while she’d dealt with that one, another six had climbed out of the pit. Her lips and jaws were black now; she could feel them slowly knitting but not fast enough. I can’t get ahead of them. I can’t. Best I can do is die trying.

,,

Been meaning to see Hel again. With a crooked grin, Jael went to die by lava.

There was bedlam all around, and only a very few people remained nearby her to see the Dire Wolf charging into battle against the creatures from below. They'd never forget the smell of burning flesh, or that this woman/creature had a appeared to save them. Miraculously they'd escaped the building, making their way further north, into the city where the creatures had yet to move. There was a police barricade, and They were welcomed and rushed behind it.

,,

"There's a woman, but then she turned into this wolf... She's She's fighting these stone and lava men... All alone."

,,

The younger woman who related the tale passed out, and the officer looked to his partner. "What do you make of it?"

,,

"In this city, who knows any more. At least someone's fighting them. We've been ordered to remain here, on perimeter."

,,

Meanwhile, Jael's Howl of challenge had the desired effect, bringing more of the monsters to her, but few of the magma ones. Those that came were made of a black basalt threaded with what seemed to be gold. From the pit beneath the rubble, though came perhaps the worst of it. a roar from a far larger throat. Something much bigger was on its way.

Jael pounced on the closest basalt-beast like a wolf on a rat. It mostly dodged her but all it took was one paw smashing into its chest to throw it to the ground. When she stepped on it, her weight alone crumbled it. In the meantime, a number of them had ringed her, their hands pulling at her legs and underbelly fur to try to bring her down. Their weight could bring her down but she pulled her legs loose and danced back. When one came too close, she grabbed him in her mouth, wincing at the taste of the rock, and crushed him in her jaws.

,,

On they danced, the stone men half her height trying to grab her and Jael snapping or striking out with her paws, knocking them down to turn them into gravel. Her world reduced itself to the endless stream of black forms grabbing at her, at their attacks which rarely hurt her and the fatigue from the constant fighting. The last would do her in eventually, though she resolved to change forms before the end. If she died, she would do it as her father’s daughter.

,,

The roar of the big thing came again. With a snort of irritation, Jael bounded over the heads of the basalt monsters crowding her and ran for the lip edge. Andrey was going to want to know what they were facing.

A gout of flame rose from the pit just before she got there, but it didn't touch her. She could feel the unbearable heat coming from the pit, and it was obvious something was coming.

,,

Nearby, the Portal opened and The Heroes Andery had gathered appeared. He began to speak. "Alright, put your plan into action, and get to work containing the situation. I'll feed you any relevant information I can see from here, Do not linger unless you must."

,,

He knew Danielle wished to try to reason with them, but had a feeling that wouldn't go well. "Before any of you dump water on the Magma people when they were sprayed by a fire engine they exploded, which causes significant damage.

,,

These monsters are largely minions, more than a match for humans, but against you guys, not as big a threat. Treat their damage values for all attacks as +6, Their attack as +6, Parry/Dodge is only 16,Toughness is 8 and impervious and They are immune to fortitude effects. Only the Magma ones explode when hit with large amounts of cold water. There are three types on the field, the Magma soldiers, Basalt Soldiers, and what Look like Granite Soldiers. Have fun being heroes, Save people as you can. Jael is present nearby and is notcieably a metahuman trying to take down the Stone soldiers.

Scout hit the ground running as he exited the portal, his strange energy-rock-shield strapped to his left arm. "Name of the game is containment, people!" He called to the rest of the group as through their com links as he dove into the action. "Get the civilians to safety first, then we'll figure out a way to put them on ice! Move out!"

,,

Scout leaped and somersaulted off the steel frame overhang that Gatekeeper had set them down on. He dug in his heals and sprinted toward the nearest, group of civilians that were being threatened by a group of the lava monsters. First things first, he thought, put yourself between them and danger!

,,

Scout spun, and lashed out with his shield at one of the nearest lava creatures. The discus throw spun from his hand and went wide around the first rank of attackers, Scout smirked as the shield bounced off the wall of one of the nearby buildings that was still standing. The angle of the impact resulted in the shield leaving not even so much as a mark on the building before it began to boomerang back his direction... The shield found it's mark on the back of what he could only assume was the head of one of the creatures. He gave a great leap, caught the still-spinning shield in mid flight, somersaulted, and landed with both feet planted firmly in front of the crowd of civilians, facing the enemy. "Not one more step!" He called out, an imposing figure of justice.

,,

He turned slightly to the crowd and said, "Everyone, be calm! We're here to help. We should be able to bring you to safety shortly. Until then, just stay behind me!"

At that point, a city bus that had been abandoned by its passengers when the wheels on it had melted off crashed down on the pavement next to Scout; a development that didn't do much to help his message of calmness and obedience. Fulcrum soared over on her ridiculous pink floating plastic disc and pointed at it.

,,

"Everyone get on the bus! As many as you can fit on! I'mma airlift you out, so it doesn't have to be comfy! People with kids first! Move it!"

She gave Scout a grin and a thumbs up.

Gatekeeper held the portal open long enough for Andery to finish his statement before letting it close. By then all his compatriots had sprung into action, halting the advances of the magma-men (magmen?), and lifting people to safety. He noticed a huge wolf-creature at the edge of the fissure from whence the creatures sprang, and numerous rock-men rushing towards its heels. He had no idea what sort of creature this was, but since it apparently fought against the volcanic creatures it wasn't an enemy. If anything it was about to be surrounded and outflanked, when the team could use all the help it could get.

,,

"Distance is meaningless..." he thought as he began

,,

He concentrated, reaching out to the fabric of space around the wolf.

,,

"All points are one..."

,,

Simultaneously he felt the space around the nearest thing to the wolf's size and mass: an abandoned city bus.

,,

"Here...is There!"

,,

However, the wolf's reflexes allowed it to move at the critical last second, leaving it exactly where it was and shifting the bus randomly. As this was the 1st time anyone had ever evaded that technique, Gatekeeper was momentarily stunned. The wayward bus, having been lost to the mercy of the dimensional interval, suddenly appeared above the hole from whence the lava-creatures came and plummeted in. Quite unlike any action movie he'd ever watched, the bus merely caught fire and melted into the fissure instead of exploding.

,,

"Well, that failed miserably..." he thought as he surveyed the failed transposition. Inwardly he was glad the bus wasn't occupied, not only would it have killed innocent people, the dimensional shearing would probably have flung it into another building.

,,

Afterwards he created a flight disc and stepped into the air where he could overlook the entire area and search for any people who needed to be moved to safety.

,,

[spoilertag: OOC] Transposition is a dodge-resisted 'attack' form, so if Jael the wolf REALLY wants to stay where she is she'd have to make a dodge save at 18. I suppose I could edit the post if that happened. [/spoilertag]

,,

She gave Scout a grin and a thumbs up.

,,

"Pretty good, right? Thought about joining the army for awhile."

,,

The two of them had sure gotten off to a rocky start, but Scout would be damned if Fulcrum hadn't come in with a timely assist. He reaffirmed her message, shouting at the dumbfounded people, "You heard the lady! Move move move!"

,,

Scout looked toward the sky and gave his teammate a smile and a quick salute, "Good work, soldier!"

,,

Scout let the makeshift evac take its course. He tumbled around the side of the bus and took one look at the wave of oncoming magma men. One of them saw him and launched a blast of liquid hot magma in his direction. Luckily, his tumble had already landed him in a defensive crouch. He simple shrugged his shield into place and deflected the blast. Once more into the frey, he thought. He spun as he rose, giving his shield another mighty toss. This time, it ricocheted between multiple targets, knocking them all about. He ran along the side of the bus opposite the civilians as he readied himself to catch his shield. While he ran, he drew his pistol and fired a few quick shots. The bullets bounced harmlessly off their rock hard armor. Damn. Useless. He caught the shield and holstered his pistol.

,,

"Listen up, team," He touched his two fingers to his ear to speak though the com link, "Just fired a couple bullets at these things and it doesn't seem to be working. I'd keep your distance with that knife of yours, Gatekeeper. I'm not quite sure what these things are made out of yet. I can tell you that a good ol' clonk on the head from my shield seems to be doing the trick."

,,

Scout trotted a few feet forward into a new wave of oncoming rock creatures. He quickly checked over his shoulder to notice Fulcrum airlifting the last of the civilians to relative safety. He planted his feet, shifted his weight, and put everything he had into slamming his shield into the lead rock monster, "The bigger they are...!" Rock crashed into rock, and the monster went flying, right into two of his fellows behind him. "The harder they fall!"

Magnum Opus floated out of the portal, sighting a magma monster. She put two fingers to her lips, and blew.

,,

FWWWWWWEEEEEEEEETT!!

,,

The sound of her whistle set people's teeth on edge, though thankfully no windows shattered. She spoke, loudly. "Newcomers! I don't know if you understand me, but hear me anyways. This city is under our protection. You cease your attacks immediately and we'll see about working this out. I see you harm a hair on one more person's head and we will fight to our last breath to stop you. So are we going to do this peacefully?"

,,

Magnum Opus knew that they'd choose violence. Too often, people did, emptying a handgun into her shortly before disappearing into the criminal justice system with barely a hope of making it back out. But still, she had to hope. As she scanned the group of magma people, her hands were balled into fists and she was primed to dart in on a moment's notice, because hope wasn't a plan.

Jael was an immigrant to this world and she’d spent centuries captive in another world. She was no stranger to dimensional shifting. She was also no stranger to being dimensionally shifted, and that’s exactly what it felt like happening to her. In fact, the last time she’d felt that, it had been on Day One of her imprisonment with the Fae. She knew that ripping feeling; she had felt that pull in her nightmares.

,,

With a snarl, she leapt out of the area of the effect before it had a chance to do more than lift the fur on her back. I’m going to find out who did that to me, and I’m going to skull fuck them with a halberd. She snapped her jaws shut around another basalt man and turned him into gravel. It didn’t help the overall numbers but it made her feel better.

Quickly surveying the chaos, Gatekeeper looked for any of the others he might be able to assist. Magnum opus, whether or not the creatures were willing (or able) to negotiate, had the attention of those in her general vicinity. Assuming her durability applied to being burned from volcanic heat, she absolutely needed no help. He saw Scout smash into one and send it flying into others like pins in a bowling alley, he clearly had that under control. Fulcrum was airlifting people using another bus, and simultaneously answering his question about how little effort it took for her to telekinese something. He only caught glimpses of Paladin and the Doctor as they flew faster than he coudl reliably track. But while trying to track down the rest fo the team he did notice a small group of people cowering at the entrance to some shop that has been long since ruined by the invaders. They were going to be caught any minute by a small platoon of rock-men rushing to attack the giant wolf, and in watching the wolf they didn't even see them coming.

,,

"That area's pretty badly damaged anyway, so no point in being subtle..." he thought focusing on the small mob of them. "Nice that they're all huddled together and standing still" he thought.

,,

In one second the space under the huddled people dissolved into a portal, the other end of which was in a field near the police barricade he could see from his vantage point. Not expecting it, the refugees predictably fell into the portal and out by the police and ambulances. He then quickly shut the portal before any of the monsters could get into it.

,,

"Hey...uh operator? We've got an enraged dire wolf with the advanced creature template attacking the fissure where these monsters are coming from. Any ideas?" he said into the earbud.

Patriot was still concieving a plan, when Rachael called a audible. "Keep in contact if you see something."

,,

There was a explosion to her south, not too far where she was holding position. Rising up into the sky she saw it. A marching band of the granite soldiers moving in on a school bus. She knew she had her comlink, so she could call for help if necessary... she didn't want to go in solo but hesitation was going to get the kids there killed! The explosion came from a nearby car, and she thanked god it wasn't from another schoolbus or a car with someone in it.

,,

She headed off, closing the distance in moments, landing in front of the moving column. Their formless faces immediately turn to her and start to converge.

,,

All Rachael did was glare, turnig to the children locked in awe and terror. "EVERYONE! GET DOWN AND COVER YOUR HEADS!!!" She said reaching down to the ground as the "thrusters" on her wings glowed red. She looked over to make sure the kids weren't looking through the bus windows. She knew how the glass would break, as long as they weren't standing up looking the cubed glass of the windows wouldn't cause dangerous injuries.

,,
OOC
Spending a Hero Point for a stunt. Going to use a Flight-10 sonic boom, using it as a area effect attack.
,,

She looked back and the marching stone soldiers were doing exactly as she wanted.

,,

"I'm Doctor Northlight... and this city is... protected..." She zoomed up for 150 feet faster than Mach 1. The shockwave of her sonic boom ripped through The soldiers, breaking the glass in the bus but also disintegrating the stone menace. All but one. Using her remaining flight she moved into range, leveling her blaster she unloaded, one shot was all she needed as a brilliant blue flash busted apart the last soldier. Landing back on her feet she ran to the bus' door, the driver was dead... irrecoverably so... that was what happens when a rock spear goes through your chest... She runs over to the emergency door and shouts to the students inside. "Come on! Head that way towards the responders, I got your back!"

,,

She holds up her blaster. "Trust me... it's what I do. I'll be right behind you."

,,

The children nod and start running. "STAY TOGETHER! I can protect you easier that way!" She shouted, her tone was direct, but one of taking charge.

,,

Rachael starts escorting them out of the area. Keeping an eye out for more of the stone soldiers.

The instant Izzy's feet hit the ground, she willed her suit into chameleon mode; the mask slid up to cover her whole head and she was nothing more than a vague smudge in the air.

The scene was chaos, and for a second her heart was gripped with fear and doubt.

What the hell can I possibly to do help with this madness?

But then she remembered her orders and rapidly made her way to the edge of the pit...where a dire wolf was fighting the underworld invaders. It was clear it was one their side, but was it a team player? She began to scout around the edge of the pit, looking for more insight into the attackers.

As eagerly as the Paladin was to help people, he didn't fly through the conveniently opened rip in the fabric of space and time onto the battlefield to do exactly what he had said he would at full speed. He flew through relatively slowly, scanned the area, and then moved at his full speed (a measly 60mph) to where he was needed the most. He deactivated his external speakers and activated his internal mic as he started creating a 1' thick 10' high wall of heat resistant metallio-ceramic wall 100' at a time. He tried to keep it on the division between already damaged and not yet damaged property, and to keep innocents on the outside of the wall. (When that's not possible, he created a wall around them to keep them safe.) He also quickly created a piece of sound proof insulation around his earpiece.

,,

"Alice, we're downtown. I assume you've already noticed the situation. We have a team together, and we have earpieces to communicate. They also transmit location, so we're going to have to figure out a way to do that. Also a way to integrate these into the suit would be nice, as right now I have half my head covered in foam."

,,

"Yes, sir. I've been following it, and I noticed your entrance. Some of the news channels have nice angles. Please be careful, sir, we won't be able to work on that problem if you perish in combat, sir." Alice said in the Paladin's clear ear.

,,

"Yes Alice, I'll be careful. Keep an eye out for imminent threats, and try and trace the tracking signal in these earpieces so you can keep track of all of us and help me coordinate. Also, once you get time, there's a huge computer system that you need to try, very gently, to get into inside the building I visited. All sorts of stuff there, and I'd like to know more." After that, he removed the foam from inside his helmet, without missing a beat. He was already following after Dr. Northlight when he said to the group "Yes, Rachel, a duo would be beneficial I think. I'll put a wall between the kids, you, and the danger zone, and then we can move on to other areas."

,,

"I understand, sir. We'll deal with the situation at hand and then worry about these ancillary issues."

,,

The Paladin nodded at Alice's comment as he continued his wall towards Dr. Northlight and the school bus' children. Most of the wall he made was on the city side of the field, as that's where the greatest concentration of people were. Once he kept the damage from spreading to more of the buildings, he'd save as much of the park as he could, and then they'd be completely contained... so long as they didn't dig under or get thrown (or be able to jump) over the wall.

The Time for talk had long since passed. Even though several did stop to look at Her, Danielle could see no empathy in their stone eyes, she saw nothing at all, infact, until several ripped up chunks of the street to hurl them at her. Though they failed to harm her, the intent was clear. Renata and Gatekeeper were largely successful in evacuating people from the area. With Northlight and Paladin working seemingly in tandem they easily got the children to safety, Even as the creatures began to turn towards the Metas now within the square.

,,

Many turned to Focus on Jael, Including four of the Magma soldiers, all hurling lava at her, even as another group of three attacked Scout.

Gatekeeper saw the attacks the magmen hurled at Scout and the Dire Wolf a split-second before they hit, but with his limited reflexes he could only deal with one of them. Deeming the Dire Wolf in more danger due to it being made out of fur, he chose to try again at assisting it. Of the two attacks launched at the wolf, one struck it solidly and the other was instantly redirected via portal to one of the rock-men, smashing right into its "face" and flooring it.

,,

"Looks like we're coming under fire people!" he exclaimed into the earbud. Locating a significant cluster of them away from any allies he lined up his next attack. "I've been waiting to try this on something," he said under his breath. With an expenditure of power, 5 of the rock men were engulfed in a spatial shockwave. The distortion radiated out for 60 feet before ending. Rubble in the area with them was shredded under the force of the attack.

Fulcrum had successfully evacuated the group of people on the broken down bus. That made Scout swell with pride, and the satisfaction of a good job done. It seemed, thankfully, that most of the civilians had gotten out of the area, either with their help or without. Time for an offensive, he thought.

,,

Gatekeeper had mentioned sighting a strange, large wolf on the far side of the square. "Time to turn on the juice and see what shakes loose!" He took off at a run, loosing his shield into the air once more. It ricocheted off a building, and bounced back through a group of rock warriors that were barring his way, effectively reducing them to rubble. He caught the shield without a second thought.

,,

A few seconds later, Scout found himself staring down into the pit of lava, facing off against the living molten rock. He was flanked by Gatekeeper and whatever the wolf was. "Seeing as how you're growling at them and not me, I'll assume you're on our side."

She spun around just in time to see a giant fist of black rock marbled with veins of glowing magma hurtling at her face. Her eyes narrowed and her hand came up instinctively to shield herself...but far more effective was the invisible visegrip that caught the monster's arm and held it just inches away from her face. She could feel the heat baking off of it like coals in a fireplace.

,,

A wicked little grin lit her face.

,,

He'd do.

,,

There was a whoosh of air and the magma monster vanished, leaving a trail of sparks and little flaming bits of rock pattering down in its wake. It rapidly dwindled to a small point overhead.

,,

Fulcrum then set off on her hoverdisk again, swerving around the jags of torn concrete and asphalt, sometimes bobbing up high enough to get over the half-melted carcass of an automobile. She followed the noises of footsteps and unnatural, grinding roars that sounded like boulders crashing into each other. And there she found a group of the rocky ones; the ones that weren't bubbling with liquid fire inside.

,,

She whistled loudly, and as one they all turned from the havoc they were wreaking to stare at her with glassy obsidian eyes. She waved at them and shouted, "Hey! You have the right to remain silent!"

,,

Stone fists thudded against stone chests, and they roared challenge, and began charging her.

,,

"I'll take that as a waiving of your rights. Awesome."

,,

They'd gotten maybe halfway to her when a meteor struck. A giant ball of rock and magma slammed down right into the middle of them, sending out a shockwave of superheated air, fragments, and blobs of lava! Well, not so much a 'ball' as that other giant that she'd lofted skyward beforehand.

,,

As the beasts tried to recover, Fulcrum held a hand out to either side of herself, and two big chunks of pavement wriggled free of the shattered curbside and zipped over to her; one on either side. As she moved her arms and hands experimentally, the chunks moved with them.

,,

Big rocky villains needed big rocky fists, after all.

,,

"Lets do this."

Doctor Northlight kept behind the children she escorted keeping an eye out for any surprises. There was a hill where a granite outcropping stands on their right and another rock pile to their left. "Dang it... Right into where they'd want us. Keep moving!"

,,

Rachael hovers up, and notices something she didn't want to see. A less-bulky granite soldier... perhaps a scout.

,,

"RUN!!"

,,

The children ran forward, as Rachael readied her blaster. "Now or never... HEY YOU!!!"

,,

The scout looked at her, just what Rachael wanted as she leveled her blaster. "It's me you're looking for, right? After all, I just took down your best..."

,,

It forms a rock staff in it's hands. "Oh no you don't!"

,,

Rachael fires blowing off it's hands in one shot before leveling another shot at it's chest. It breaks apart and Rachael lands near it's disembodied head. "You tried... I can give you credit for that." She said, looking over to where the children were running, they had neared the outer barricades. Rachael hovers up and flies over to them, making sure things stayed clear.

"Doctor Northlight to team, just secured a group of school children. Status report?"

Jael shut her eyes and turned her head away from the fury of the blasts. One twisted away weirdly at the last moment but the other roared over her body, trying to burn her alive. The heat was intense, as rough as anything Surtr had ever thrown at her or her siblings. She could smell the asphalt and concrete melting, a unique smell that she known only because there was nothing else it could be.

,,

Then the flame washed over her and she cautiously opened an eye to find herself whole. And suddenly standing next to someone new. Her black eyebrows rose as she considered the newcomer; tall and fit – not super-model attractive but certainly appealing enough. “Well,” she said, speaking in a perfectly human voice, “if you keep looking that yummy I’ll be on whatever side you’re on.”

,,

Another attack ruined the fun and Jael rolled her eyes. “Time to play. Catch ya later, soldier boy.” With a snarl, she leapt out onto a fallen wall that hung over the abyss. Moving to the edge of the building, she peered into hell – the fake lowercase hell, not the real hall that was ruled by Hel.

,,

A creature was coming up the slope. It had a long, bullet-shaped head that merged right into its body and then down to a long tail. The heavy scales protecting its body was a brownish-gray color, and the long jaw was filled with jagged teeth. The best part of all was that the damned thing made her look like toy dog in comparison.

,,

The wall shuddered and started to fall; Jael scrambled up to the top and back to solid ground. “We have something big coming – a massive armored nasty thing.”

"Soldier boy, huh? Well, always nice to feel appreciated." Scout gave the wolf a small salute as she bounded off. When she returned from the molten hole in the ground he frown at what she had to say.

,,
,,

"Doctor Northlight to team, just secured a group of school children. Status report?"

,,

Scout touched his fingers to his ear and clicked on the communicator, "Scout to Doctor Northlight and team. We might need some help. Just west of the central square. We got a new ally team. That big dog Gatekeeper mentioned is friendly." He gave Jael sly look, "And she talks. We've found the entry point for the creatures. There's a large volcanic hole in the ground here. Bad news is we got something big coming up."

,,

After pulling his hand away from his ear, he trotted forward to where his new lupine friend was still watching the hole in the ground, "Something big coming up, huh?" Scout leaned over the edge of the hole to get a quick look. He back pedaled after seeing the scaly creature climbing the sides of the rock face. "Boy, you weren't kidding! Good thing they've got a saying about what goes up..." Just as he spoke, the lizard burst out of the hole with a roar and a spray of lava. Scout batted the dropplets of molted hot stone away with his shield before staring down the creature.

,,

"...It must go down."

For the first time in a long time, Izzy was scared, as in truly frightened; the chaos that was exploding around her, the heat and smell of hot lava and burning asphalt were, for a few moments, totally overwhelming. She found herself crouched on the ground, hands clamped to her ears, eyes squeezed so tightly shut that it forced tears. None of her training had prepared her for this sort of situation; she was going to die here, invisible and ignored, her body dragged from the wreckage long after the battle was over.

But then a voice rose up in her, at first barely audible but then rapidly rising in volume and intensity until it thundered in her ears.

get up get up Get Up Get Up Get Up GET UP!

And then she was moving, scampering up the wall to get a better angle on whatever was coming out of the pit. It was big, true enough, but it was covered in scales, not rock or hot lava.

I might actually be able to affect that big bastard.

Slither dropped down near the edge of the pit, allowed herself a whispered prayer, and then flung out her arms, her palms slick with her special venom as her limbs stretched towards her target.

Izzy is gonna use her 30 Elongation reach to try her Weaken attack on the big ugly; it's a DC 20 Will save to resist having Awareness dropped. At the time I am posting, it seems no one is in chat (Moira is silent), but hopefully someone can look it up and see it.

When the call from Scout came in, the Paladin was trying to catch up to where Dr. Northlight was helping with the children, making the barrier wall along the way. However, once he heard he report and saw that Rachel had everything under control with the children, he made a bee-line at his full 60mph over to the hole. "Rachel, it looks like you have everything under control, and I think it sounds like I'm needed more over here," he explained as he turned and left.

,,

Once he arrived he just sort of hovered there in the air, out of reach (he thinks) of the giant creature, but within his range to be able to manipulate matter... however he had little thought of what to do to combat, contain, or otherwise deal with the large reptile that was coming up to the surface. He was so distracted, in fact, that he didn't even think about muffling the sound of his voice when he contacted Alice.

,,

"Alice, I want you to gather all the footage you can and cross reference with every database you have or can get access to. Pictures, videos, theories, descriptions, sightings, anything."

,,

The group, however, couldn't hear Alice's reply. "Yes, sir. Right away, sir. Haven't been able to find much footage yet though, sir, it appears to still be mostly in the hole, and you've done a good job of evacuating people from the area so no instagram, twitter, or youtube footage yet."

Rachael looked over to the emergency workers where she was. "Alright! I'm going to need a first aid kit... one suitable for anyone heading to a disaster scene!"

,,

One of those working the scene walked over to Rachael with a skeptical look on his face. "Why should I hand over important equipment to you?"

,,

"Simple... because my team is going to need a Doctor... For good or ill some of us are going to get hurt. There is something big coming out of that hole those stone soldiers are coming from and someone is going to have to support those fighting."

,,

"So you're some sort of superheroine, space-girl?"

,,

Rachael quirked an eyebrow. "I'm Doctor Northlight. And my colleagues and I are going to save this city."

,,

The worker reluctantly hands over his bag full of different first aid equipment. "Just be sure to get this back to us, you got that?"

,,

Rachael nodded. "But you should evacuate the area. I'm not sure what that thing is capable of and this fight will get violent."

,,

Rachael looks over to where everyone is. She put her hand up to her helmet, at least to show she was talking over the team's comms. "Team, this is Doctor Northlight, I'm heading over to the hole area. I got some first aid supplies in case we need it. Should I keep cover and be ready to retrieve casualties or head to the scene and provide some fire support?"

,,

She checked her blaster. It's current heat levels showed it had three shots left before it went into cool-down mode. "Standing by for orders."

"Roger that, Doctor." Came Scout's replay over the intercom. Scout chanced a few quick glances behind him before the creature could extricate himself from the cavernous hole entirely. "Rendezvous near Paladin's wall, and await further orders." Scout shook his head, "Not orders, updates. I'm not in charge here. Help if you want, but feel free to hang back for now. We still don't know what this thing is capable of. Hell, we don't even know what the back half of it looks like. If it comes out of the ground breathing fire, or something, it's probably best if you're on standby to clean up whatever's..." Scout choked on a lump in his throat, "Whatever's left of me."

,,

Two scaly claws grasped the asphalt at the rim of the cavernous hole. The ground cracked and shattered as the creature's sharp talons gripped it and it's inevitable climb came to an end. "Okay team, here it comes. I'll take point. Try to distract it. Paladin, you hit it from behind. Gatekeeper, try and keep this thing nearby. This area's clear of civilians, but we don't want it rabbiting. There's still some areas we haven't secured yet. I can't stop it, but maybe you might be able to. Slither, if you're still with us, try and trip it up, or disable it, but stay out of sight. Northlight, you're on damage control."

,,

Scout waved to get the big wolf's attention. He placed two fingers at his eyes, pointed to the creature, then back at himself. 'I'll keep it's eyes on me,' the gesture said. He pointed at Jael, then at a large outcropping of concrete from a shattered building nearby. 'you get to higher ground'. Finally, he drew a line in the air toward the hole, and banged on his shield with his fist, 'Then strike!' The directions were clear.

,,

Scout could hear a low hiss emanating from the hole, and he was willing to bet that it wasn't coming from the magma melting away the rock. He stood proud, and tall, about 20 feet from the hole directly between the razor sharp claws splayed out on the edge. "We'll be fine, team." Scout's voice came over the intercom one final time, "I know, because there's something this creature isn't aware of." He covered behind his shield and stood on the balls of his feet, ready for anything.

,,

"It picked the wrong city. It picked the wrong god damn country!"

,,

As the creature's head crested above the hole, Scout charged forward, leading with his shield.

,,

"OOH-RAH!!!"

The end result of the frntic, hectic series of attacks launched by the gathered metahumans was a forty percent reduction in the number of stone soldiers almost instantly, especially considering Gatekeeper's crowdbuster attack. Thankfully no one else was near him when he did this. With a titanic roar, The great beast burst from the ground. It was vaguely reptillian, with a large mouth full of razor edged teeth, and understandably large, comparing it to Jael would be like comparing a great dane to a chihuahua. It moved somewhat ponderously, but had no problems crushing vehicles or anything else in it's way. It was at this moment that Slither's hands found purchase on its tail, and the venom coursed into the big beast, it's movements becoming more slow.

,,

That didn't stop it however, from belching a gout of flame at the nearest target, a as yet undamanged building. The flames proved highly corrossive to the stone, and in moments the building was in danger of total collapse.

,,

The creature seemed dumb and slow, and didn't react as another roar came from beneath one of the pits within one of the other buildings. This creature it seemed, had friends, and they'd be along shortly...

Magnum Opus's eyes followed the path of the flame, and she zipped off, trailing dust in her wake.

,,

Okay. It's a little bigger than a 747... and it doesn't matter. I still have to keep it from falling.

,,

She grabbed the side of the building, straining to keep it from collapsing. The colors of her costume flared with the expenditure of strength.

,,

Magnum Opus' carrying capacity is 400 tons. If necessary she'll boost that with Extra Effort.
,,

"I hear another one. We need to... unf. To seal the breach," she said into the comm, over the sound of crumbling stone. "And someone want to help me get this fire out and this building stable?"

You’re going to feel really stupid when you find out what I can do, Jael thought as she watched the human charge forward. To be completely honest, she was actually watching his ass charge forward. In her defense, it was a well-toned and maintained ass, so it was hardly any surprise it had caught her eye, especially in the form-fitting pants he wore.

,,

With a shrug of black-furred shoulders that somehow worked despite her canine form, she bounded to the large outcropping of concrete. For now, she’d play along with the soldier’s game and see how he did. She couldn’t wait until he found out what he hadn’t bothered to ask about her.

,,

The ground slipped away under her paws as she dashed to the side. Legs as long as a man was tall certainly helped her moved at considerable speed but she was a creature of legend and myth. She moved fast because she was born to run and hunt; born to kill on four feet. She admitted to a certain delight as she came around wide and dashed up the concrete hill. This was pack hunting; while a poor substitute for pursuit with her siblings, it was as close as she’d gotten in centuries.

,,

Crouching at the top, she looked like a puppy about to play to the inexperienced. No puppy had ever watched a target with such intense silver eyes.

,,

Move actions only this round to get into place.

The Paladin listened to Scout's orders. Sounded like enough of a plan to get started... though he really didn't know why he was chosen to attack from behind. He was much better at containment, but he knew well enough how to make grenades that he could toss. Hopefully that'd be enough.

,,

It was then that he saw what the giant lizard did to the building. It hadn't been damaged, so there was a chance that it was still occupied... and even if it wasn't, that was still somebody's life, either their house or their office (sometimes it was hard to tell from the outside). So he quickly replied over his headset, "I'll attack from the rear in a second, I gotta help Magnum with that building before it falls over!"

,,

He flew quickly over to the building. Before he could repair the structure, he needed to put out the flames, so he created a thick rim of ice around the area that was on fire. Ice to hopefully suffocate the fire while at the same time quenching it with water once the ice melted and cooling the area that had been on fire below the combustion point to stop re-ignition. He also made a 'tail' or drainage spout out the bottom away from the building, so that excess water could mostly drain away from the building as opposed to inside it... same for anything caustic that was in the fire (seeing as how quickly it was eating away at the stone).

,,

"Hold on Magnus," he said through the earpiece, "keep it straight and once the fire's out I'll fix it so we can get back to the fight!"

Gatekeeper's mind was awhirl with ideas and cancelations. Fire's out so gas explosions are out, normal weapons won't do jack, no grenades or missiles, prolly has massive heat aura, obviously fire-element, needs water/ice element...Wait! Looking around franticly he saw what he needed: one of those water reservoirs one finds atop some buildings.

,,

"Bombing attempt incomming!" he said into the communicator as he flew closer to his weapon. This will either be very good or very bad, he thought as he directed his power to the space all around the reservior, and the contents within it.

,,

[spoilertag: OOC] Darksol-Aeternium *rolls* 1d20: 12+10: 22, and Gatekeepter attacks the creature with this roll by apporting the whole reservoir over its head like a massive steel waterballoon. He has Increased Mass, Ranged, and Precise active on that power already. If 25 tons of matter isn't enough to grab one of these things, then he'll be spending his one hero point to further increase the mass so all of the water and most of the steel container goes (the top will likely sheer off making the whole thing a huge bucket). Splash damage is a matter of course, but the purpose of the attack roll is to ensure it flows down the hole [/spoilertag]

The builidng would hold for now, thanks to the two of them, and indeed, they could hear it's occupants cries for help, some were obviously hurt within.

,,

In truth Gatekeeper's idea was a very mixed blessing. As soon as the cold water touched the Magma soldiers all that remained there exploded like a string of fire crackers. This pelted the nearby buildind with flaming debris, as well as the metahumans, and what few regular people remained in the battle zone. The flood of water roared towards the lowest area, indeed the great hole where the creature had emerged, sending up a plume of steam from it, but otherwise the massive creature held it's ground having hunkered down low to the ground. From deep within it's chest there was a loud rumbling growl. It was not amused at all by that, and it's mouth once again opened and a deep red flame could be seen near the back.

,,

Everyone on the ground within 150 feet of the creature must make a dodge check, DC 20 to get out of the flood zone, or risk being washed into the hole. Everyone not behind cover needs to make a DC 22 toughness save from the collective explosion of over a dozen magma soldiers in the area, the shrapnel is flaming obsidian shards.

Long6 confirmed in chat that Scout would be introduced into the initiative in front of Jael. Here's the new initiative order for clarification:

Scout, Jael, Paladin, Northlight, Gatekeeper, Magnum Opus, Slither, Fulcrum, Creatures.

,,

The displaced water tower appeared above the creatures head, groaning as it's structural integrity failed under it's own weight. Scout watched, wide-eyed, as the massive container plummeted toward the creature's head. Time seemed to slow to a crawl. Scout threw his weight in the opposite direction of the creature attempting to reverse the direction of his run. He'd just passed the pedestal of a broken statue near the edge of Central Park. If he could just make it there...

,,

The water tower ruptured in a shower of steam, steel, and filtered water. The flood poured across the area around the creature; each of the smaller, super-heated, lava-men popped like bad zits sending a shower of super heated shrapnel in every direction.

,,

It was all Scout could do to duck behind the stone pedestal just as a flood that would've made Noah proud washed over him. His frantic scamper had left him slightly off balance, and though he was able to deflect many of the magma shards coming his way, he could only ensure he protected his vital areas. A few of the shards clipped him on his right thigh and his left ankle. Another tore off a chunk of his new uniform as it burned through the meat of his right shoulder. His gasps of pain were muffled by the roar of the water crashing around him.

,,

"Damnit, Gatekeeper!" Scout was already barking into his earpiece. The fact that the water tower had appeared out of thin air meant it could only be two people that caused the flood, Gatekeeper or Paladin; Scout could clearly see Paladin propping up a nearby skyscraper, so there wasn't any need to guess who'd drop the bomb. "Friendly Fire! I said contain it, not drown it! Not all of us are airborne. Check your collateral damage, soldier!"

,,

Scout tumbled out from behind the ruined statue's drenched foundation and let rip his shield with a tremendous throw from his injured arm, doing his best to ignore the pain. At first, it looked as though his attack would miss. But as the shield flew passed the creature's head, it ricocheted off a building, and then another, "Hey, Ugly! You planning on standing there all day blowing smoke?!" Scout's shield came crashing into the creature's eye from the other direction. It's trajectory changed once again and began to boomerang to a position about ten feet ahead of him. Scout took off at a run. He caught the shield in stride as he kept moving for better cover. He'd seen what this thing could do to a building, and he did not fancy being around to see what that breath weapon would do to his skin.

Izzy couldn't really tell if her venom had much of an effect; after all, a beast that size could probably metabolize a lot of toxin. She thought she detected a hint of sluggishness in its movements, but overall it seemed like a change in tactics was probably a good idea.

"Bombing attempt incomming!"

And then that nice young man had a very bad idea...

On the plus side, there was absolutely no time for doubt now; there was only movement. Without even consciously thinking about it, Izzy's arms shot backwards, wrapped around a light post, and yanked her up and out of the way of the wave of water. This improvised slingshot effect sent the British metahuman back-flipping through the air as large chunks of hot debris whizzed past her like bullets. A small part of her brain remembered that it would probably be a good idea if the rest of the team could see her, so she slipped out of chameleon mode in mid-air.

Seconds later (though it seemed MUCH longer), the brunette superspy landed in a perfect three-point landing on a nearby wall some thirty feet above the ground; only then did she take the time to active her comm and blow off a bit of steam.

"What the hell was that, 'Keeper?! I thought you were supposed to be good at bloody physics!" She quickly scanned the area, unsure of where she could be of the most use. "Slither here, hanging about clear of the blast area; who needs a hand right now?"

Fulcrum skidded around a corner and zoomed over a car flipped onto its side, looking a lot like she was riding one of the hoverboards from Back to the Future movies. She saw the giant crater dead ahead and made for it, knees bent and crouched half over and grinning into the sixty mile-per-hour headwind. Her TK wasn't just holding the disc up at this point...it was also holding her on board, grabbing her costume to do it since she couldn't affect her own body with her powers. Even though she'd done it before, riding something this fast felt so amazingly reckless that it just got the blood pumping.

,,

And then came a roar behind her...and when she looked back, there was a wall of water crashing from between a pair of buildings and rearing up into a huge wave that was already starting to crash down onto her!

,,

There was literally no time for thought. In her mind's eye, the bright pink disc she was riding suddenly catapulted upward, launching her up into the sky like the cup of a trebuchet would loft a rock. At that speed she couldn't keep the disc under her though, and she had a dizzy few seconds of tumbling helplessly through the air before she caught hold of her costume and carefully tugged at it...stabilizing her fall and slowing it. Renata had learned from embarrassing experience that clothes didn't hold her full weight very well, but if she was gentle she could at least slow herself down to parachute speeds.

,,

As she free fell, she could see the flood of water washing over the streets towards the hole the monster was coming up from, pushing cars and pieces of building and garbage and bodies before it. Then she saw that same water splash over the magma men who had gathered around that crater...and suddenly the air was a beehive of black rock and chunks of still half-melted lava!

,,

Fulcrum immediately tucked her arms and legs in, and created a concussion wave that boomed out from her, making a huge spherical indent in the flood underneath, breaking windows for a block around her, and more importantly...deflecting and slowing the hail of shrapnel enough that she emerged unscathed except for a nick along her left thigh...it stung, but wasn't deep enough to be dangerous.

,,

And then she was falling, albeit slowly, into something that looked like a giant toilet someone was flushing New York City into.

,,

Swimming was something she liked to do, but not in the middle of a desperate fight against unwinnable odds. Fortunately, she spied a traffic sign cruising past on the torrent below. It was just big enough that when she yanked it up to herself, she could kneel down and catch it with both hands against her knees. The impact was hard enough to bruise a little, but that was fine. It kept her out of the water.

,,

"Jesus," she muttered into the communicator she'd wedged uncomfortably into her mask. "Tell me that wasn't one of us."

,,

Before anyone could answer, the Beast in the Pit emitted its thunderous, boulders-smashing-into-each-other roar again. Fulcrum looked around and blinked at it, then wiped some spray off of her goggles.

,,

"Oh yeah. That thing."

,,

There was a geyser under her, as a garbage truck levitated out of the water. It went up with her, just above the roof levels of the low-rise apartment buildings she'd been caught amongst, and began to orbit her as she built up momentum.

,,

"If I find out someone bought this thing in Belize and flushed it down the toilet into the sewer, I am gonna be really pissed off."

,,

The garbage truck, now making deep swishy noises from moving so fast in its tight circle around her, suddenly hurtled off towards the monster and smashed into its flank just ahead of its rear leg on the right side. Chitin thick enough to bounce a tank shell buckled and cracked with sounds like explosions. The monster was rocked sideways and its voice blared out again, jetting furious flames into the sky.

,,

Renata stood there, perched precariously on a big green road sign in midair, a little stunned herself.

,,

"We're gonna need a bigger truck."
