            The Pathfinder Bestiary, and the long line of monstrous encyclopedia that came before it, do a great job of attacking the problem of providing game statistics and mechanical information for a very wide variety of creatures. There are a lot of strange creatures from fantasy novels and movies, from ancient mythology, and, as time went on, from the twisted minds of game designers and even GMs, for that matter. Anyone today who tried to go about creating an extensive bestiary of all the different cool and interesting fantasy monsters could fill three or four volumes with three hundred monsters each, and still have a long way left to go, with fans crying out for various “forgotten” monsters to get some attention. That kind of breadth doesn’t leave a whole lot of room for depth, and that’s where Exotic Encounters comes in.

 

            There are all kinds of reasons why you might not want to use a monster stat-block straight from the core rules. For one thing, if your players have a habit of browsing through such books, or are long-time veterans who know the basic ins and outs of most fantasy staples, you may need an unusual stat-block just to throw them a curve ball and teach them that they can’t count on their out of character knowledge to take all the mystery out of the game. Alternatively, many GMs can recall a time when they wanted to make use of a certain monster in their game, only to find that it was a few CRs too high or low for what they had in mind.

 

            Exotic Encounters takes a single, iconic monster, and creates three new variants on that theme. These variants aren’t simple tweaks, and are more than simply advancing or removing Hit Dice, though that occurs as well. Each of these three variations on the monster’s theme has a specific, flavorful goal in mind, and a role to play, and their statistics entries are gently massaged in order to make them fit those roles. Further, each of these variants comes with brand new specially-crafted special abilities, which are unique to Exotic Encounters and not found anywhere else.

 

            This particular installment of Exotic Encounters focuses on the vargouille. These strange bodiless fiends date back to the first edition Monster Manual II, and are one of the stranger creatures of the lower planes, feared far and wide for their deadly kiss, which provides a very unforgiving “save or die” experience at a very low level, a terrible fate that is only compounded by the fact that the transformation is detailed in particularly macabre fashion as the character’s hair falls out and their facial features slowly twist over the course of one or more days. The first vargouille in this book, the singing vargouille (CR 3) can also cause such a transformation, though in this case, it is done by a haunting lullaby, instead. Singing vargouilles can also unleash powerful and damaging sonic shrieks, and their bite inflicts a curse of silence. These terrors pale before the bloodsucking vargouille (CR 5) however, which does not kiss its victims but instead attaches to them and drains their blood, transforming their victims into wights, whose heads separate from their bodies and become vargouilles when they are destroyed. Finally, the giant vargouille (CR 7) is a vargouille of titanic proportions, with a propensity for swooping down and swallowing human prey whole in a single gulp, and either allowing them to be digested by powerful acid that inflicts difficult-to-heal wounds, or simply spitting them back out again in the air, leaving the victim to fall to his doom.

Character growth is an important aspect of any fantasy roleplaying game, and with the advent of feats in 3rd edition D&D™, players have always had a lot of growth potential and new abilities. 

One of the problems people discussed is that many feats are static and have a diminished amount of return as you advance.  We decided to change that.  In Feats Reforged, feats scale in ability as you do, so that their level of ability matches your own.

Many of the so-called “worthless” feats have now been reforged, so that their abilities are on par with other feats, and each feat now scales in ability with their users. 

You will find that most feats now also have an additional bonus effect at around 7th, 14th and sometimes even 20th level.  This represents your increase in skill with these feats and talents.

In addition, these feats are an excellent resource if you play in a low magic setting.  You can focus on allowing the players to be the heroes, relying on their own abilities, rather than focusing on the magic items they carry.

This .zip archive contains a number of games (some released for free, some not, some still likely to see development in different directions, some not).  The games are:

THE EXCHANGE (Versions One And Two) A game in which all rolls are contested, and the environment, your own wounds, and everything else are active elements that can be calle don in a freewheeling fashion, The Exchange plays light and quickly.  It is a "universal" system, but is significantly better at cinematic and mythic than it is at gritty.

AWEN, Iteration 4: Awen is a fatasy game in which players construct their characters and their world simultaneously (after which, the world is handed off to full control of the Guide, and play begins). This version of Awen uses multiple six-sided dice in much the same fashion as The Exchange and The Cog Wars.  While a reconstruction of the game to The Ouroboros Engine is taking place, this version of the game has gotten some good feedback while that's been going on, so I decided to preserve it here.

THE COG WARS, Edition Zero was originally intended to be a testbed, and followed up by a first edition...  But it turned out there was nothing actually wrong with Zero Edition; it didn't need anything to be fixed badly enough to justify an edition change. Cog Wars is an insane romp by cartoon children, geezers, and steampunk robots through a dystopian city, hell-bent on revolution and freedom.

8-BIT DUNGEON is a silly game with funny-sided dice.  It's a send-up of 8-Bit Theatre (and yes, I asked permission), which is a send-up of classic video games.

BRIGHT ARCANA is a very tiny game of flying around, looking awesome, and shooting things with really powerful, utterly explosive, enemy-annihilating lasers.  I am reliably informed that this is the kind of thing girls might want to play.

KEELSTONE is a mini-campaign set in the world of Clash Bowley's Volant, but using rules in common with Bright Arcana and Infected.

MICROCOSM is a simple RPG based on trading glass beads about the table.  It's an attempt at stealing and making serious Greg Stolze's core mechanics from ....In Spaaaace!, but without the rum and the goofiness.  And, no, I'm not sure why I wanted to get rid of the rum, either.

PERFECT 20 is a light d20 variant, clocking in at 40 pages total.

THE FAR TOWERS is another light game, though this one runs on the idea of rolling to deal with dangers, playing off the core of a never-finished game that went out online: The Red Box Hack.

A COUPLE OF LARP SYSTEMS (Dustbowl Prophets and Ruritania: 1844) are also included; these documents were written for specific play groups, but are fully comprehensible to others.

INFECTED - PLAYTEST VERSION 3 is also included; this is a further and much more extensive development of the same mechanic as is used in Keelstone and in Bright Arcana; playtest development on Infected is ongoing as of this posting (Autumn 2013).

Written by Martin J. Dougherty, 'Through the Veil Part 5' is a free adventure set in Spica Publishing's Outer Veil setting. This adventure is the third part of a Linked Adventure Series (LAS) called 'What are Friends For' that follows a new Subsidised Safari/Merchant ship looking to hire a few crew members for an extended haul. The story arc of 'What are Friends For' is comprised of 10 episodes/adventures.

'Through the Veil Part 5' requires that players and Referees have a copy of, access to, the current edition of Traveller or other SF RPG rules. The Outer Veil sourcebook from Spica Publishing would also be be useful but is not required.

This is the third installment of our Adventure Path Iconics line, and the eight characters herein are specifically designed for play in a winter-themed Adventure Path. Each character has a full stat block, including campaign traits, a detailed background and personality, and advice on advancement through 4th level. Find one that suits you and you’re ready to play. These characters have been built using a 20-point buy, as many Pathfinder players and GMs prefer it. However, each comes with instructions on how to adjust the stats to a 15-point buy, should your GM wish to use the standard for Paizo’s adventure paths. If your group enjoys an epic fantasy feel for their characters, then adjustments up to a 25-point buy are also available. Whatever your style of play, just a few minor tweaks will have you ready to go.

 

The iconic consist of four human characters and four unique races from the NeoExodus: A House Divided campaign setting such as:

  • Cavian: Creatures of myth, whispered in legend, lost in the mists of history – and now returned for reasons unknown to any but themselves. Such are the cavians, a race of humanoid rodents noted for their incredible psionic abilities.
  • Cynean: Crystalline scholars of all things arcane, the cyneans are as mighty in mind as in body. While the psionically inclined might expect the cyneans to share their tendencies, these beings of living crystal are masters of magic, not mentalism. On Exodus, which is both their home and their only known haunt, they can ever be found seeking some mystical secret or long-lost spell.
  • Dalrean: Dalrean are a race of sentient, mobile plants. If a treant is a thinking tree, a dalrean is a thinking flower, and indeed, the spellcasters of this race are noted for their astonishing floral ‘spellbuds.’ Dalrean, who live exceedingly long lives, are closely tied to the natural cycles of Exodus.
  • Prymidian: Prymidians are regal, red-skinned humanoids. Their stately demeanor and formidable build impress other races and their learning follows suit. The prymidians are a communication and language-inclined race, dedicated to scientific reason, research, expansion of knowledge and discovery. Their culture seeks to know all there is to know in Exodus, and to communicate that knowledge to others. None know better than the prymidians that knowledge truly is power.
