Staging Site in rural Tibet

“Shit. Shit!” Jack’s cultured British voice wasn’t used often for profanity, but when it was, it had an impact.

“What’s going on?” Tyrone asked, looking up from his surveillance of the phones. He was waiting for the calls for evacuation.

“A mutant escaped yesterday from a German facility.” Jack looked up from the communication hub he was monitoring. At some point, DEHA was going to figure out that the mutants could peek into this emergency channel and they’d alter the protocols. Until then, it was a resource for them. “They’re setting a trap to catch her today. It looks like it might work –they’re using a nullifier to take her down.”

“We already have missions going on.” Tyrone’s statement was delivered reluctantly. He was quiet, then scooped up the phone. “I’m going to go back really quickly and round up everyone who can help. Then I’ll be back.”

Jack hesitated; there were few things he liked more than altering a plan, particularly if that could result in the possible failure of the plan. But the whole idea, the entire purpose to what they were doing was to save their people. And one of them needed saving. “All right. Make it fast and be sure they have a phone for extraction.”

DEHA facility in Southern Germany

Seeker had been loaded on a plane yesterday and flown somewhere. All he knew is that he’d crossed the Atlantic in the night and was somewhere over Germany. This had the feel of another mutant hunt, and the young man stared moodily out the plane window.

When they off-loaded him, he was hustled into a building. It was a standard military complex, one of dozens that Seeker had seen in his time with DEHA. He was marched into a room where a couple of other men were already seated. There was a short, dark-haired man whose face brought to mind yard gnomes; Seeker had worked with him before. If Cancel was here, this was definitely a mutant hunt. The other man was probably the muscle: he was slim and blond with an intense gaze that seemed to take in all the details of a room. Like Seeker, they were in AMP collars.

The door opened one more time and a group entered. One of the members was a boy in his early teens; he took the open seat between Seeker and the blond without a word to anyone. The other men were clearly DEHA and they opened the briefing immediately. “This is Farhenheit.” An image of a woman made of flame appeared on the screen behind the man giving the briefing. “She’s exceptionally dangerous and completely crazy. Yesterday, she escaped from German custody so it falls to all of you to get her back. We’ve arranged for a capture outside of Passau, Germany. Her tracking chip shows she’s in the region and we have someone she really wants to kill. We’ve leaked where he’ll be for her to come and find him.” A satellite image replaced the woman behind the military man briefing them. It showed a wooded area, remote and perfect for staging a balls-out mutant fight.

“I’m going over what everyone’s roles will be in this operation. Seeker, you’re our hound, as normal. Assist where you can. Cancel, take out her powers as fast as you can, before she kills someone. In particular, the doctor we’re using as bait is to be protected. Strike-” The young boy looked up at that. “-you’re going to protect Dr. Silverstein from damage, taking attacks for him if necessary. Hopefully she’ll think twice about attacking you. Prime, you’re to take her on in the air. Seeker and Cancel, this is Strike and Prime’s first mutant hunt, so feel free to share your wisdom with them. We’re all in this together.”

* * *

After gathering up everyone at Home who was willing to go, Tyrone jumped them all back to the staging ground in Tibet. “Everyone, here’s what we know. Fahrenheit is a flame-based mutant who escaped from the facility holding her in Germany. She’s now in Southern Germany. DEHA is setting a trap for her south of Passau, Germany in a wooded area. They’re using her former doctor to draw her out. We’d like you guys to go get her, keep her free and get her home.”

“Easy enough, right? Let’s get this baby rolling.” Tyrone turned from them and began to open up a warp, making the way for them.

“Does she look like a flame controller?” Fenris asked.

“Oh, you can’t miss her.” Jack nodded firmly. “She’s quite distinctive.”

"What are they using to trap her?" Mary wants to know. "They can't just be using a doctor. Will it be like where I was? Soldiers and machines?"

She paused, then added, "Also...how do we tell Fahrenheit that we're on her side? Before she attacks us, I mean. I remember being in a fight is really confusing."

Travis sweated. That was about all he had energy for. The fact that the inside of the Mayan temple was considerably cooler than the jungle outside did not mean that it was cool and comfortable, a fact which Travis had lamented about more than once in the past hour. When Tyrone came through stick his head into people's room and hauling them into the "great-room" Travis had been cheerfully lazy about gliding after him, slumped over a roundish boulder that was at least a little cool to the touch; for the time being anyway.

Most of the others were off on "missions" which included May, which meant that when given the chance to kill some crummy DEHA agents who were harassing some other mutant Travis all but jumped at the chance. "Fuck that noise," he replied to Mary's questions, "once we start killing blips she'll figure it out. Unless she's some kind of psycho or something." The lanky mutant looked at Tyrone, "Let's haul ass. No time like the present to some of the old ultra-violence!"

Travis came out of the warp first, mostly cause with a shell of rocks and other debris around him he was pretty much the toughest mutant in the cobbled together assault team. There was a tiny amount of really wanting to lay down some punishment on the DEHA asshole who'd ruined his life, but it was only a tiny bit; like whales sized at best. The forest was dense, dark, and looked like something out of one of Grimm's fairy tales. Travis shrugged at the beauty of the place and simply went airborne, smashing through the treetops and into the starry sky above with all the stealth of the proverbial bull in a china shop. He halted just above the treetops, looking around, trying to see which way the group needed to go. With luck their mutant rescuee would be lit up like a torch and easy to spot from here in the dark of night.

4 Hours earlier

The room was getting darker as the sun set and Sascha watched the light slowly fade into darkness setting the room in dim light. She was attached to her gurney, her meds had been admistered earlier but she didn’t fall asleep. As far as she knew she was supposed to fall asleep and drift off into a dreamless state but that had been getting more and more difficult lately. It was as if something inside her was changing and… it scared her.

Sascha forced her eyes shut and focused on her breathing and slowly sleep got hold of her. Then the dreams came… unpleasant yet exhilarating. She was standing… no burning bright in the sky and cast fire down her foes… but why? She tried to focus on a reason – was there a war? No… it felt more… personal. Someone angered her…

“Did you see the game last night? Man what match. For a moment I thought Munich wouldn’t make it but the last 15 minutes were epic. Who would’ve thought they could turn a 1:3 to a 4:3? No one can beat them, I tell ya.”

The other two men were eyeing the new guy who replaced Fred who had to call in sick. They usually didn’t talk that much and today shouldn’t have been any different but newguy wasn’t paying attention. Things couldn’t get much worse, could they?

“Anyway, we celebrated quiet a lot… you guys aren’t into soccer, are you?”, he asked while fumbling for his smokes. He already had a cigarette in his mouth when he found his lighter. It was already too late to keep him from lighting it. Lighter ignited…

“NOOOOOOOOO!!!”, but it was too late.

From the depths of her dream Sascha felt fury unlike ever before. She opened her eyes gasping once, twice and then the room lit up with fire – gone was Sascha.

The embodiment of living flame quickly melted her prison down and spread her fire throughout the entire facility. Alarms were set off and the sprinkler was trying to quench the fires that had spread but it was already too late. Fahrenheit was set free.

Her first target was Hans Zwegert – an orderly who took ‘liberties’ when cleaning her up. He would suffer but first she needed to know where to find her old friend Doctor Silberstein. The guards were trying to call for help but certainly were not prepared for a real emergency. Everything had been running so smoothly over the last years. No one was expecting a slip up like ignoring the strict non-smoking rules.

Unfortunately for Hans Fahrenheit was already waiting for him and he knew his days were numbered. No one heard his pleas and screams but eventually his voice failed him but not before giving away what she wanted to know.

Like a comet Fahrenheit rose from the burned down facility that had been her prison for so long and instead of seeking freedom after such a long time she only had one thing in mind. Revenge.

Now

It didn’t surprise her that Dr. Silberstein had retreated to this backwater town far away from the heart of Germany and most importantly from her prison. He knew she would try to kill him if she was given the chance, it had been evident each time she was set free and it got increasingly more difficult to keep her at bay.

The fiery apparition smiled as she approached the site and while part of her knew it would’ve been wiser to be more stealthy she didn’t care anymore. She’d prefer an honest fight over subterfuge. It wasn’t her nature to be sneaky – fire would find its way – it always did.

She was coming closer to her destination and with it excitement rose. In her mind’s eye she exercised a variety of ways to kill her tormentor each one even more painful than the other. Her smile turned into a grin, then she closed in for the kill.

“Soon”

The Helicopter streaked across the evening sky, it passengers quiet and lost in their own thoughts. Ulysses Markov watched the German countryside roll by without really seeing it. His encounter with that strange doctor, Dr. LeCroix, was weighing heavily on his mind. Her seeming generosity was clearly a trick although he'd yet to figure out what she really wanted and it bothered him.

Seeker turned back to the others in the cabin of the chopper and studied each of them in turn. Cancel was the oldest one of the four and the only one who'd Ulysses had worked with in the past. At 40 something he was practically an old man. Prime was a pretty boy, a few years older than Ulysses and carried himself with confidence. Strike was very young and looked about the same age as Ulysses when he was deployed on his first mission. Their gazes met briefly and Seeker saw the fear in his eyes, but the mutant hound had no sympathy for the boy. He'd sink or swim on his own merit.

"So, umm," Strike started. "They said you guys might have some advice for us?"

Seeker remained silent as he used his 'other' sense. He didn't know how it worked, nor did he particularly care. His sense unfolded and in the blink of an eye each of his companions lit up in his mind.

Target 1: 1' distance at 9 o'clock, 48 years old, good health, Prometheus class, mutant supression.

Target 2: 3' distance at 11 o'clock, 23 years old, good health, Prometheus class, superhuman strength & toughness, flight, some enhanced senses.

Target 3: 3' distance at 12 o'clock, 12 years old, good health, Prometheus class, personal energy manipulation and projection

Cancel's signature was familiar and he was still uncomfortable with how similar their mutations actually were. Prime was basically a flying brick, albeit one in a very pretty package and it didn't really surprise him that he was on this mission. Strike interested him; personal energy manipulation could mean so many things but the overwhelming impression Seeker got was something physical, like the chi masters from really bad martial arts films. All told Ulysses chose Prime's mutation as the most useful to copy in this situation, much as he would like to try out Strike's, and he felt the changes to his physiology taking effect.

Cancel had spoken while he was analyzing the team and copying Prime but he didn't catch what worlds of wisdom the elder mutant had chosen to dispense. Never-the-less Seeker added a simple "Don't fuck up." as his only words of encouragement. The helicopter landed at it's designated LZ and the team disembarked more or less ready for action.

Mary stepped through the warp when Travis didn't come staggering back through, and immediately was assailed by a moment of sensory overload. The forest was full of things she'd never seen, or felt before. Every particle whispered its secrets to her, and the whispers became a cacophony. The moment eased, then passed. Even so, it took Mary a few minutes to stop staring at the trees, the rocks...wondering how they could all be so similar to things she'd seen before, yet still different. Variations on a theme, when it seemed to her that things ought to be either the same, because they'd been formed by the same forces...or utterly different because of the different environment.

Abruptly she realized she wasn't here to contemplate the existence of trees and animals and rocks and dirt, and hastily stepped away from the warp, thoroughly embarrassed at her lapse.

Lamia stepped through next, giving Mary a smile that was both amused and a little worried. The girl was still acclimating to life outside of the carefully controlled world that had been constructed for her; as useful as her powers might be, the ancient woman wondered if they'd spend more time and effort keeping the girl from getting killed than they could really afford. But it hadn't been her decision. Mary had been offered the choice and decided to come along; she'd learn, hopefully quickly, if her place was on missions like this or at the temple making supplies.

She glided out of the way of their last companion, the usually silent and taciturn Russian by the name of Fenris, and took up a sentinel stance not far away from Mary. Hopefully, this would go quickly and they would have another ally to be de-chipping and settling into their small but growing community. Hope, as the Greeks knew, though, was a curse in the hearts of mankind. She kept herself ready to move at the slightest hint of danger.

The sandy haired mutant paused for a moment as a shiver ran down his spine. The cool night air was pushed by a breeze and quickly made goosebumps stand out on his skin in contrast to the heat from moments before. The sky was clear, off on the horizon the glow of a city washed out the low stars, but overhead the faint glowing band of the Milky Way crossed the vault of the sky.

It only took a second to locate the mutant they were here to rescue. Less than half a mile off a flaming form dropped down from above, a flame clad figure of feminine proportion held aloft by wings of fire. Gee, I wonder if that is her, Travis thought wryly. Shaking his head he dropped back down through the wound in the treetops he had already created.

"Ladies and gent, there is a rather unsubtle fiery redhead out there and I think she's just our type. If you all don't mind, I'll give you a lift, it'll be faster." He didn't actually wait for them to say yes, no, or anything else, instead he just grabbed a ten foot wide disc of earth, rock, root, and brush, lifting it up from under the others. The material was too coarsely bound together however and started to crumble into pieces. "Mary, can you make a disc for me? Ten feet wide, maybe a half inch thick, something strong and light? Aluminum maybe?" The young mutant nodded and quickly produced a metal disc to Travis' specifications. "Much better kid, thanks. Step on folks, let's roll."

Travis rose back through the treetops, the disc and its passengers following behind him. He oriented on the Seraph and then zoomed off in her direction, staying low, just above treetop level. Behind him the disc followed, with Mary quickly making a waist high rail around three quarters of the diameter for them to hold onto. "Err, sorry about that," Travis said looking back, "Not really used to doing this at high speed."

Just to make clear, because I don’t think I have been: the team preparing to capture Farhenheit arrived earlier than everyone else. The awkwardness in timing is due to having PCs in all the groups. Just an FYI for everyone.

Though the team was more or less ready for action, there were a few steps to take first. Dr. Silberstein was already at his small cabin. He’d already been told that Farhenheit knew where he was and was likely coming with vengeance in her mind. The insane mutant blamed the doctor, who had been trying to cure her of mental instability. Or so they were told. Seeker wasn’t buying it; he didn’t think even the kid was buying it. But none of them said anything, like the good little mutants they were.

Silberstein was put outside, near the door, on a picnic bench. He and the boy, Strike, would be sitting with food so that Farhenheit would think he was eating with a grandchild, unaware of her intention. Seeker thought the kid looked nothing like Silberstein, and that Silberstein looked like enough of a creep that Farhenheit was more likely to think that Silberstein was molesting the kid. But no one asked him. Instead, he had to wait inside the cabin, hiding with Prime and Cancel.

Farhenheit was a little surprised when she found the scene before her; Silberstein and a child, sharing a late dinner. Her hesitation lasted only a moment before she swooped closer, prepared to burn both of them in her quest for vengeance. If the child was Silberstein’s, perhaps she would make him watch as she killed the kid slowly.

When Dr. Silberstein’s glanced up to see her, Farhenheit delighted in the expression of fear on his features. This was what she had waited years for: her revenge for captivity and brainwashing. She darted in close –

The kid spun and rose with a shout, like a character in a bad kung fu movie. His right hand stiffened and flattened as he chopped at the air – but Farhenheit could see something coming at her. It rippled through the air like waves of heat, but it was pure energy. The force slammed into her and dropped her several feet, though it didn’t hurt. Farhenheit realized that Silberstein was ready for her.

Meanwhile, the mutants who had come to rescue Farhenheit had arrived. The scene was clear: the terrified doctor huddling under a table while a twelve-year-old defended him. Above them both was the vengeful woman made of flame, tongues of fire already flaring from her outspread hands.

Post one round of reactions (six seconds, or one move and one standard, as per the rules) in the body of your next post. Put your rolls and your initiative in spoiler boxes, please. Those who don’t post will have their iniatitives rolled for by me, and will ‘freeze’ for their first round of combat. Please note the Fenny is still under my control at this time.

The flames spread over her body and then lashed out like whips made of flame into the cabin setting it on fire while she slowly descended. She had been hit by the other mutant but it either had no effect on her or she simply didn't care...

As she began to speak it sounded as if she was singing...

"One, two, buckle my shoe

Three, four, shut the door

Five, six, pick up sticks

Seven, eight, lay them straight

London bridges falling down, falling down, falling down

London bridges falling down, my fair lady"

The Fiery angel of wrath proceeded with her descent focusing entirely on Dr. Silberstein...

Seeker watched their Fiery target descended and realized that whatever else had been done to her, she was bat shit crazy. "Great," he whispered to himself. He turned to Cancel as she launched her casual attack on the cabin. "Dammit, would you lock her down already Old Man?"

Seeker let loose with his sensory power. He'd learned in his early years not to be shy about keeping tabs on the situation with his special sense. The information about his opponents and his own team was always invaluable. Ulysses tensed next to Cancel, ready to spring into action with the borrowed powers from his teammate Prime. He had a feeling he's be dragging Cancel's ancient ass out of the fire. Literally.

When the firebird, or whatever she was, started to lash at the cabin that had just come into view with whips of fire Travis slowed immediately and located the first clearing he could find. Thankfully there was one less than a hundred feet out from the cabin, flanking the flaming mutant so that she would hopefully not turn and attack them. The disc slowed and then dropped through the trees settling on the ground with only the hushed crunch of leaves and grasses. I can be subtle, Travis mused, It's just way more fun not to be. "Ride's over folks. Everybody off. There's a cabin ahead. Watch your asses," Travis spoke in a staccato of fierce whispers, trying to convey maximum information with minimal time and room for confusion. Without waiting for a reply he launched into the air once more, gaining altitude and all but disappearing into the darkened sky.

Mary plunged after Travis, wishing SHE could fly too. The tall grass and shrubs brushed her legs as she passed, scraping off invisibly thin films of rot and nasty organic

When she saw the scene at the cabin though, all thought of ick fled. Mary acted on pure instinct.

As Fahrenheit prepared to blast the people into ash, Mary shouted, "No!" and a sheet of armored steel appeared between the Lady of fire, and her prey.

The flames around the Mutant danced wildly reflecting her irritation and confusion. The fire whips died instantly as she aborted her attack ignoring the steel wall Mary just summoned for protection and turning around to face the voice she just heard, a voice so familiar and yet almost forgotten.

Sekhmet, daughter of Ra...

"Mother...?", she answered carrying both hope and confusion in her voice. She had come here to exact revenge, to kill the man who imprisoned her, who... who tried to eradicate her until only a compliant husk was left over. A puppet he could command and use to do his bidding. This was the last place she expected to find her mother... her mother who she last saw almost twothousand years ago...

Strike aimed at her Fahrenheit again, but the woman moved with almost contemptuous grace, dodging the weirdly wavering ‘heat wave’. She was preparing her flame whips when she saw her mother. “Mother?” she asked, her eyes wide. Then the gnomish man who exited the cabin looked up at her. Fahrenheit could feel him drawing her powers away, diminishing her godhood. She felt her body harden as her flames became substantial. It felt wrong. She didn’t have much time to dwell on this, because the blond man flew up and hit her in the face with an iron-hard fist. The black-haired man didn’t seem to be doing anything.

Fenris could smell the soldiers. There were some that were just moving up, picking their way over the ground carefully. But four of them charged in, feeling invincible in their suits. Fenris sought to teach them the foolishness of that. He moved around carefully, not even needing to be silent. His claws reached out and cut open the man’s back, driving through armor and flesh alike. The man cried out, even as Fenris darted away.

Travis could see this as he hung over the field, including the four Rapid Responders moving from their cover to the cabin. One was intercepted by Fenris, while his buddy shot at Fenris, even though he’d disappeared into the underbrush. They have some way of tracking Fenris. Probably tracking all of us. The third went after Mary, probably because she’d dared to make the wall, while the last one had tried to grab Lamia. The human soldiers were hanging back, no doubt out of fear.

From high above, even in the darkness Travis could see the armored forms of a handful of roboblips closing in on the cabin, on his people, and the fire clad woman. Aside from them there was the woman's target, a doctor according to the information they'd been given, and a mutant traitor by the look of the strange attack. Then the firebird went out, like a switch being turned off the flames surrounding the woman were snuffed out, plunging the area into the dark of night once more. At the edge of the cabin, standing just outside of the door, a small man that Travis knew instantly ...

Cancel.

Travis snarled like an animal. If he could lay blame on any one person for his capture it was Cancel. Not just a traitor to all mutant kind, but a leech as well. No amount of physical invulnerability had helped Travis once his telekinetics were robbed from him. He was not a physical powerhouse, and the DEHA agents had used K-gas and physical restraint to subdue him.

Howling his fury Travis launched himself downward, riding the rough disk like a snowboard as it cut through the air, kinetic force keeping him and it in contact. The protective sphere of debris whirled around him even faster, his anger bleeding off into the motion of the objects. Any thought of a more tactically sound attack was gone, Travis had eyes only for the traitorous leech who'd robbed him of five years. A hammer of raw force slammed into the little goblin of man and everybody within sixty feet of him like a pile driver smashing a rod into the earth. All the while Travis cackled with malevolent glee at his good fortune.

She felt cold metal grab her arms and ducked away, slipping through the soldier's hands with preternatural grace. Something was wrong, and she wasn't about to lose Sekhmet a second time. Not just after finding her. Not a child that could survive the years with her, as so few could.

She braced herself against Travis' berserk rage, then reached back and grabbed for the armored human, lifting him without hesitation or strain and threw him at the blond-haired man punching her daughter.

Mary barely turned around in time to see a soldier leveling a weapon at her. Her eyes went wide with terror as the business end lit up with blue crackling arcs...but a metal plate appeared in midair at exactly that instant, blocking the main force of the blast. Even so, the plate was knocked back into Mary's chest...hitting with the strength of a good-sized punch. She rocked backwards with a girlish, "Ow!"

In a way, this happenstance saved her life though. As she reeled back from the force of the electrical bolt, she looked up as she windmilled her arms to stay upright...and saw Travis. Saw an invisible wave of power roar down through the trees, stripping branches and leaves and animals and mash them before it as it went. Realized she was underneath that vast, unseen pillar.

She immediately hunkered down with her arms over her head. A dome of armored metal appeared over and around her just as the telekinetic wave struck.

It was hammered into the ground hard enough to threaten to smash her inside it...but not quite hard enough to actually accomplish that. An instant later, the dome vanished again and Mary stood shakily back up, her eyes red-rimmed from fear and pain.

Seeker was surprised when his mutant sense picked up four unknown mutants. It had happened before of course, detecting unexpected mutants, but that was usually in an urban setting. Not in the middle of Nowhere Germany. He would have been told if they were back up so that left one option. Hostiles.

Cancel: 3’ distance at 3 o'clock, good health, Prometheus class, Mutation Suppression.

Prime: 20’ distance at 12 o'clock, good health, Prometheus class, Superhuman Strength & Toughness, Flight, Enhanced Olfactory Sense.

Strike: 10’ distance at 12 o'clock, good health, Prometheus class, Personal Energy Manipulation and Projection.

Fahrenheit: 20’ distance at 12 o’clock, good health, Prometheus class, Fire Transformation, Projection, and Control, Immortal.

Target 1: Male, 60’ distance, 1,000’ altitude at 8 o’clock, good health, Prometheus class, Telekinesis and Invulnerability to Physical Attack.

Target 2: Female, 30’ distance at 9 o’clock, good health, Prometheus class, Enhanced Physical and Mental Attributes & Regeneration, Immortal.

Target 3: Male 55’ distance at 7 o’clock, good health, Prometheus class, Enhanced Physical Capabilities, Regeneration, Limited Biological Immunities, Limited Offensive Shapeshifting, Enhanced Senses, Immortal.

Target 4: Female, 30’ distance at 9 o’clock, good health, Prometheus class, Matter Creation & Destruction, Specialized Sense.

As the team exited the cabin Seeker relayed the information over the comms. “We got four hostiles coming in fast from the west; an Adept, Bestial, Kinetic Projector and Shaper. All are Promethean class!”

When Fahrenheit and the other immortal woman began talking to each other in a foreign language Seeker realized just how bad things had gotten for his team. Instead of outnumbering their prey four to one, their opponents now had the advantage in numbers. Rapid Responders were good but four Prometheans could tear through them with little effort if they were determined, and these four seemed pretty determined. Their best bet was to take out Fahrenheit as quickly as possible, then make a strategic retreat.

Seeker launched himself in the air as a column of invisible force slammed into him from above. It plowed him into the ground but the earth beneath him was soft and added to the enhanced resistance to damage he’d borrowed from Prime, it did little but grind him a few inches into the earth. Seeker re-launched himself at Fahrenheit and finding her confused and disoriented, he lashed out at her with his fists.

Strike was focusing on the flaming woman, just as he was instructed to do. The kid clenched his teeth together grimly as he summoned his chi and throw it at the woman again. But as his trainers had noted, Strike was much better up close and personal than he was at range. The blast missed her, flying off into the night.

He hoped it didn’t hit a plane or something.

Then he saw the barrage of telekinetic force coming at him. Strike gulped, even as his finely-honed body reacted instinctively, trying to get him out of danger. He wasn’t entirely successful, and he was smashed into the ground by Travis’ rage-fueled brutality.

Cancel himself was less affected by the blast. He failed to dodge, but his cancelation field dissipated the force of the blow. It didn’t always work, but today it did and he felt himself grin with relief.

Fenris felt the terrible power of that attack and buried himself in cover. He needed seconds to heal. Then he’d be back in the fight...

Lamia felt cold metal grab her arms and ducked away, slipping through the soldier's hands with preternatural grace. Something was wrong, and she wasn't about to lose Sekhmet a second time. Not just after finding her. Not a child that could survive the years with her, as so few could.

The Rapid Responder flew at Prime, who hesitated, then simply opened his arms. He was high enough in the air that the fall could injure the human inside the suit, so Prime took the blow to save a human – just as he’d been taught. As the human clung to him and thanked God that there were some tame mutants, Prime began to drift down to earth.

There were others who were reeling from Travis’s attack. The telekinetic wave was hammered into the ground hard enough to threaten to smash Mary inside her protective dome... but not quite hard enough to actually accomplish that. An instant later, the dome vanished again and Mary stood shakily back up, her eyes red-rimmed from fear and pain.

The not-flaming creature reeled from the blow, but despite the immediate attack, her focus was on the man who’d stolen her divinity.

The fire clad woman was ablaze again lighting up the area with her flames. “DIE!” she screamed, her voice ringing with hate, fury and madness. She screamed with primal fury as she unleashed a bolt of fire directly aimed at Cancel. Again, his cancellation field absorbed the blast.

Cancel’s problem was much bigger than Fahrenheit now. He recognized the blond man trying to pulverize him. It was TK, and no doubt there were others of his ilk out there. Last he’d known, TK was an icicle. I told them to fry him, he growled to himself, cursing the arrogant Americans who thought they could contain a mutant by their will and ‘Manifest Destiny’ alone. Idiots. Still, it had changed the fight. TK was far more dangerous than Fahrenheit and so he focused his next attack on him. I wish I had my area cancellation field working.

The soldiers, having secured their locations, joined the fight. They’d been ordered not to fire on the flame-woman unless she was not on fire, so they turned their attention to other targets. Mostly Travis, not that it worked out well for them. Their bullets were turned aside by his protective kinetic field. The one who’d chosen to shoot at Mary missed and so the only one shooting at Lamia had any success with hurting someone.

The Rapid Responders weren’t doing well either. Despite having infared, the feral mutant who had torn him up was hiding too well to be found, and he wasted valuable seconds looking for him. One of his companions was currently being held by Prime; the other two fired at the blond-headed monster who had just attacked them.

There were other unintended targets who were caught by Travis. The cabin and the trees in that sphere were flattened, their wooden bodies splintering. The other person caught in there was the focus of this entire mess: Dr. Silberstein. When Travis's attack passed, he was lying crumpled on the ground, unmoving.

Cancel's attack was overwhelmed by Travis' fury and raw power, the negative energies simply couldn't match what Travis was throwing around at that moment. A pair of lightning bolts, harnessed and chained by the roboblips just like mutants, came sizzling and searing their way toward him but neither found a conductive path through the spherical orbit of debris around Travis.

Snarling fury and all but crackling with power, discounting the lightning that still arced throughout his protective field, Travis continued his descent stopping short of the ground in front of Cancel, still floating on a cushion of kinetic energy. His hands went up erupting wave after wave of raw kinetic force, hammering the Russian mutant time and again as Travis Circled around the man, buffeting him repeatedly, the excess power trailing out beyond Cancel and slamming into the other DEHA agents. "Die you little shit. Die! You fucking traitorous piece of SHIT!"

Even though Fahrenheit was wounded a smile crossed her face. The coward Dr. Silberstein knew she was coming for him and time was on her side. It wouldn’t take long and revenge would be hers. Their control over Sascha was waning, she could feel it and she wouldn’t be denied any longer.

She couldn’t waste more thoughts on why her mother and these other mutants were her. Maybe it was an attempt to subdue her again? A new tactic certainly but Fahrenheit wouldn’t lose her focus to get Dr. Silberstein. Who was friend? Who was foe? It didn’t matter – if needed she would kill everyone of them – starting with the kid that just launched himself fists first at her.

“Move aside if you want to live.”, she quietly told him as the she summoned another fire bolt in her right fist hurling it past Seeker and directly at Cancel.

The bullet tore into her arm - and back out the other side. She glanced back at the soldier, briefly contemplating another living projectile, but he was the other direction from her daughter and the enemies attacking her. The young one, not yet a man but not still a child, needed to be taken care of before he got himself killed; she left those who could fly to their aerial battle and instead picked up a length of blasted picnic table. Seeker skipped away from Fahrenheit as she reignited, using the borrowed power of flight to propel himself about 100' away from the ongoing conflict. His senses keeping him informed on the whereabouts and condition of all the mutants in the area.

"Prime," He shouted as he concentrated on Cancel's signature. "Get the Doc out of the line of fire! Go!" The the changes come over him like a wave as his genetic structure rearranged itself and his eyes changed to the white foggy orbs Cancel was so careful to keep hidden. He was going to miss Prime's resistance to damage and his rapid healing, but hopefully Cancel's ability to screw with the powers of others would be more useful.

Mary focuses on the man in armor who has attacked her, and while she can sense that shell's composition, she can't be sure she can destroy it without hurting the man inside. It's just too hard to keep them distinct on a small moving package like that.

The rapid responder instead finds the jungle darkening around him as a metal shell materializes, threatening to cut him off!

Using Create to create a metal enclosure around the guy who shot at her. He gets a Dodge resistance roll against target number 19.

Fenris is back in the fight

He rose from his crouch behind some bushes, gleaming eyes focused on the enemy mutant calling out orders. Fenris wasn't an armchair warrior - he'd fought in some of the bloodiest conflicts of the twentieth century and knew that war wasn't the abstract chess game some made of it. In some distinct ways, however, battles were just like chess.

Kill the king: the one giving the orders.

Keeping low and moving like a ghost, Fenris circled the centre of the battlefield, keeping his eyes on the mutant traitor known as Seeker. Seeker turned as he spotted the fast-moving blond man out of the corner of one eye, but as keen as his perceptions were he was too slow to react to the streak of clawed fury that was upon him.

The Rapid Responder Prime had rescued dropped to the ground, released by the flying man.

Strike’s eyes were wide as he surveyed the damaged that Travis had done. The boy’s jaw set as he finally understood why mutants were treated the way they were, why people were afraid of them. He was terrified of Travis now. Part of him wanted to run. But he’d inherited a streak of bravery from his mother and it was her tenacity that was with him as he threw a Chi blast at Travis. He missed, but he’d faced his fear and come out the other side. Now he had to survive facing it.

The power arced through all the different players on the battlefield: Cancel, Strike and three of the Rapid Responders. Strike was the only to fall, but none of them looked very healthy after it was done.

His claws tore into the young man without mercy.

The young one, not yet a man but not still a child, needed to be taken care of before he got himself killed; Lamia left those who could fly to their aerial battle and instead picked up a length of blasted picnic table. Taking advantage of the boy's focus on Sekhmet, she glided up behind him only to have him fail to rise from the blast Travis had given him. Dropping the board, she quickly dragged the youngling out of the fight.

“Move aside if you want to live,” Fahrenheit quietly told Seeker as the she summoned another fire bolt in her right fist. Seeker skipped away from Fahrenheit as she reignited, using the borrowed power of flight to propel himself about 100' away from the ongoing conflict. His were senses keeping him informed on the whereabouts and condition of all the mutants in the area.

"Prime," Seeker shouted as he concentrated on Cancel's signature. "Get the Doc out of the line of fire! Go!" Prime froze a second, then darted over to Dr. Silberstein. He was a well-trained soldier and he was given orders that made sense to him. He scooped up the man, keeping a wary eye on the fire-witch.

Mary focused on the man in armor who has attacked her, and while she can sense that shell's composition, she can't be sure she can destroy it without hurting the man inside. It's just too hard to keep them distinct on a small moving package like that. The rapid responder instead found the jungle darkening around him as a metal shell materializes, threatening to cut him off! It crashed down over him, leaving him trapped in a hollow dome of metal!

Then the changes come over Seeker like a wave as his genetic structure rearranged itself and his eyes changed to the white foggy orbs Cancel was so careful to keep hidden. He was going to miss Prime's resistance to damage and his rapid healing, but hopefully Cancel's ability to screw with the powers of others would be more useful.

But she had another target: she hurled the bolt in her hand directly at Cancel. Finally, finally, the hated nullifier fell to the ground.

Prime hesitated, about to dart away. Cancel had fallen, and the blond mutant stared at him, his gray eyes flashing like a cat’s for a second. Then he grabbed the unconscious Cancel. His gray eyes hardened as he did exactly as he was told, even though he didn't particularly like Cancel.

The soldiers were starting to panic. They’d faced mutants in drills before, but this was something different. Still, they held for a few more seconds, firing away at various targets. Mary and Fahrenheit felt the sting of their bullets.

Three of the Rapid Responders, as one, turned on Travis. The mutants couldn’t know that their leader had just ordered them to do exactly that. But three Electrical Cannons fired, haloing him in electrical energy again.

Bolts of electricty with voltages in the millions slammed into Travis's shield lighting him up like a Tesla coil. The effect was so concentrated that some of the power managed to arc through to Travis himself, making his hair stand on end and his heart skip a beat. All things being equal Travis would have ended them right then and there, but one of the other traitors intervened and scooped up the now fallen Cancel before making a run for it. "Oh no! Stop right fucking there jackass!" Travis reached out and grabbed the other man, Prime he thought he heard somebody call him, and wrapped him in pure kinetic force.

Oddly Travis could actually feel the man through his power, as though his telekinetic powers were just an extension of his own hands. This had never happened and it almost made him release the man. Almots, but not quite.

The prey's blood was on his claws, the stench of it strong in his nostrils: a mutant, but an enemy. This mutant, willingly or not, was serving his DEHA masters in the oppression of his own kind. He also appeared to be a mimic of some kind - a dangerous and versatile powerset that Fenris could not afford to leave in the hands of enemies. The feral mutant's eyes narrowed and he shrugged off the tickling nag of fatigue.

One way or another, the slave must be taken out of play.

He leapt, crossing the intervening distance as a living projectile, claws low as he landed in a crouch beside Seeker. The terrifying, bestial talons swept upwards and across in a slash meant to entangle the enemy's ankles with his own guts...

Mary screamed in terror as bullets spanged off a steel wall that suddenly interposed itself between her and the gun-wielding guard. Fragments of the shots ricocheted, cutting a little furrow along her left cheek, and another bullet managed to pierce the metal and hit her shoulder like a hammer. She whimpered and looked at herself. Her shoulder felt numb, and there was a ringing in her ears. Panic was rising.

She turned to run, to flee... Not far away was Fenris, attacking one of the other mutants who'd been here.

Weirdly, her eyes fixated on the other mutant's neck. A collar. She recognized it. It was just like the one she'd worn, not so long ago.

And suddenly something clicked into place.

The panic vanished, replaced by a weird kind of hollow calm. Her body was still marinating in juices of fear and pain, but her mind was floating over it all, only vaguely aware.

And Seeker's collar; the symbol of his oppression...popped out of existence as if it had never been.

"Fenris wait," she called weakly. "They're like I used to be!"

Ugh...I quit out of chat and forgot to save my rolls. Dawn was present though. My Toughness roll was 23, and I got another injury, but avoided serious consequence for another round.

I then rolled a 20 on perception to notice the slave collars.

Welcome to freedom, Seeker. Hope you get to live to enjoy it. :)

Ulysses made a silent prayer of thanks for Cancel's protective nullifying aura as it warped the bestial mutant's clawed hands back into normal hands for a split second as he attacked. Fenris was far faster than the field could compensate for though, so while the claws still managed to make contact his attacks were merely painful rather than life threatening.

Seeker attempted to lock into the Bestial's signature with his borrowed power and nullify his claws, forcing them to turn back into normal seeming hands. Pushing himself further, he grasped at the immortal bestial's signature with his own senses and powers and again felt the shifting change as Fenris' powers became his own.

"Now I'm as unkillable as you Bestial," he said with no particular malice as he used Fenris' own speed to reach the Strike, who'd been left unconscious on the ground by the psychotic projector who seemed intent on turning Cancel into a mushy pulp just moments before. The Adept had dragged him out of the line of fire and he crouched down next to the boy checking to see if it was safe to move him any further.

"Let him go," He said gravely to Lamia.

Lamia pulled the boy away from the fighting, sparing an irritated glance up at Travis. He needs to learn control or he's as much a liability as a warrior. Once they were out of reasonable range of the greater part of the fighting, the dusky-skinned woman crouched over the boy and began a quick but methodical examination. Satisfied that the boy wasn't in immediate danger or bleeding internally, she looked back over to the battle and debated what to do.

One of the enemy was approaching her; she set her shoulders and flowed up into a protective stance in front of the boy. "No," she replied just as gravely. She motioned to his sore and slightly burned neck, though Fenris' gifts were already taking care of the minor damage for Seeker. "You are no longer collared. Join us. Be free. The hated Nullifier was out of the battle and Fahrenheit couldn’t suppress a gleeful giggle as she slowly approached the cabin. She loved the chaos around her, the destruction that was caused – everything that would harm these humans was good in her eyes and more then rightfully justified.

She felt alive even though her body was seriously beaten she could already feel the vitalizing power of her eternal flame mending her wounds almost as quickly as they were caused.

Almost, but not quite.

Prime felt the constricting bands close round him. With a twist of his body and a burst of speed, he shot away from the invisible forces trying to hold him. The blond glanced back at Travis, his gray eyes catching the light from Fahrenheit and shining like silver.

Satisfied that the boy wasn't in immediate danger or bleeding internally, she looked back over to the battle and debated what to do.

As Travis started to curse this turn of fate, the silver eyes disappeared as Prime turned his attention back onto the night ahead of him. With a sudden burst of speed, he all-but disappeared into the night.

Mary’s eyes fixated on the other mutant's neck. A collar. She recognized it. It was just like the one she'd worn, not so long ago. And suddenly something clicked into place. The panic vanished, replaced by a weird kind of hollow calm. Her body was still marinating in juices of fear and pain, but her mind was floating over it all, only vaguely aware. And Seeker's collar; the symbol of his oppression...popped out of existence as if it had never been – in a flash of light and fire.

Seeker grit his teeth against the collar going off. His head was still attached to his body, so he guessed that whatever had made it disappear had also managed to remove some of the explosive before it fully detonated. He’d deal with the pain and burns later, and his attention turned to the kid that had been left behind. The Adept had dragged him out of the line of fire and he crouched down next to the boy checking to see if it was safe to move him any further. "Let him go," He said gravely to Lamia.

One of the enemies was approaching Lamia; she set her shoulders and flowed up into a protective stance in front of the boy. "No," she replied just as gravely to his statement. You know it – your time has come. You shall pay for your crimes.” and burn... Dr. Silberman wasn’t in the wreckage of the cabin anymore. Rage burned hotter in the flame-controller as she glared around, seeking him. She barely caught sight of him disappearing into the night, carried away by the blond traitor.

For the first time, the soldiers could see the bestial Fenris. With Lamia gone and Travis and Fahrenheit unaffected by their weapons, they attempted to turn him into Swiss cheese. A couple focused on Mary still – as the only one to act against them, they needed to take her out before she crushed all of them under hunks of metal!

Again, the rapid responders remained focused on Travis. This time, they weren’t as successful; three of their shots went wide and only one hammered into him, raising his hair and driving his heart to skip another beat.

Mary couldn't keep up. Two weapons, two different directions. And she was so TIRED. She'd never, ever tried to do this kind of thing before, and she could feel her control slipping. The blocking metal plates were not quite in time, and not quite in the right spots. Bullets ripped through the air around her. One found her upper arm, another her thigh. She went to the ground with a piercing scream that was abruptly cut off...

...by a large metal dome that appeared over the spot she'd fallen in. Identical to the one that now kept one of the responders captive, in fact.

It seemed that, while they hadn't killed her on the spot, they'd successfully removed one of the mutants from the fight.

The fiery angel of wrath gritted her teeth angrily as she watched Prime escape with Dr. Silberman - she could try to follow him but she could already tell that the other Mutant was much faster than her. Rage boiled inside her which quickly grew into a bright white ball of burning hatred which needed to be channeled. Fahrenheit set her baleful gaze upon the Rapid Responders within range and sight and inhaled deeply glowing brighter than before for a moment – time seemed to stand still and then she released her fury in a Dragon’s breath like inferno with a primal roar bathing the RRs in fire.

Prime slipped his grasp like a wet fish and then took off like a bat out of hell. The man shot off like a bullet covering ground fast enough that Travis was forced to released his shield and pour on almost all the speed he had to keep up with the traitorous mutant.

"Get back here you son of a bitch! I'm not done with him! I won't be done with him until I make him beg for death! Not until I have pulled his arms and legs off like the insect that he is!" Telekinetic fingers once more grabbed at the other mutants, pouring his anger and hatred into the attacks.

"Half my team is gone or incapacitated and your heaviest hitter has just flown off after two of them. The DEHA has unlimited resources to throw at this situation. How much can you afford to sacrifice? If I were you I'd be more worried about what sort of situation Prime is leading your projector into and not whether or not you can kidnap another mutant for whoever you work for."

"Go," The young mutant continued "This is the only out you are going to get from me. Leave the boy and go."

All through his speech Seeker is tense, ready to strike at any opponent who makes a threatening move towards him or Strike.
