Power Profiles #17: Morphing Powers

Vitals: Published By Green Ronin • 6 pages • $0.99 • full color PDF

Mighty Morphing Power Profiles ... there, got that joke out of my system ...

Descriptors, Countering & Features

Before we can get to the start we have to start at the beginning, in this case a discussion of the Morph Effect and the Transformed condition. These are useful, especially in establishing just what Morph can, and cannot, do as well as the limits of what Transformed can do to a target. As I've said before these kinds of discussion of the intents of the system are welcome, and help peel back the system a little. Descriptors and countering are, as one would expect, concerned with the form and physicality of people and stuff; the things that change with the majority of these effects. The three Features are all interesting, with the usual expectation of limited scope and utility while adding unique aspects to a character.

Offensive Powers

Four powers covering four different effects. Sad to say that these are all fairly straightforward examples. Slingshot is, perhaps, the exception, with a slightly different take on Enhanced Strength.

Defensive Powers

Five powers and six effects. This gives us transformative healing techniques as well as damage avoidance methods. Flat Form is probably the least commonplace build, with a pair of effects linked to create the desired result.

Movement Powers

Six powers. These are generally straight forward, with effects gaining the various movement powers by way of transformation of the character's body. Living Trampoline is an slightly ingenious in its simplicity however, and does bear mentioning.

Utility Powers

Five powers and effects, with the lion's share of the text being devoted to the Shapeshift power. This includes a small primer on the use of the Variable effect (including reinforcing that Variable requires a limiting descriptor), as well as discussion on some of the applicable flaws and extras for that effect. A transformative summon, and the Stretching power both also are included and are given enough discussion to make them worthwhile.

Other Morphing Powers and Complications

Summoning and Size powers are mentioned here among others. Five Complications round out the Profile. These are done well with some valuable suggestions for issues such as loss of identity, weaknesses, and methods of power loss.

Closing Thoughts

This Profile starts and ends strong, but the middle dips deeply. New players will find this useful throughout, but those with more experience in the system, and veteran players will find many of the powers to be fairly obvious. All of this isn't to say that there isn't anything of worth for those who do have more experience, but it is largely of the variety of clarification of current effects, and less expanding on the system itself. Useful to new players, and potentially so for those playing an elastic or shapeshifting character, but not required reading.

Rating: 65%, While parts of this Profile are strong the overall product is going to be of limited to use to veteran players.
