Where Yseult and Evana were grace mixed with strength, and Ayato was all precision, Bates was simply overwhelming might. Yseult crushed throats; he crushed skulls, shattering bones with his fists. Each stab of his closed hand was accompanied by a harsh grunt, the explosion of sound from him matching the explosion of power from his assault.
The first man he hit crumpled, while his companion took the opportunity to slam his baton across Bates’s back. The big man grunted in shock when the impact only stung. The two man stared at one another a second; then Bates smiled. “Another day, asshole,” he growled as he slammed his elbow into the man’s head. The enemy’s face caved in, shaped in a perfect imprint of Bates’s elbow. Bates was shocked for a second; then he swung into motion again, setting aside the thought that he was as lethal as his gun. It was a hard concept to wrap his mind around, even as he blocked another swinging baton and drove the heel of his palm into an opponent’s chin, shattering her jaw. At the last second he realized it was a woman, not that it mattered. The enemy was the enemy.
The understanding that he was as lethal as his weapon allowed him to keep his gun holstered as he continued his charge into the room. He missed the woman being sexy-fighty—Evana’s glory and Yseult’s power—as he picked another man and kicked him in the ribs. Bates knew he shouldn’t have been able to do that; getting his leg that high fast enough that the guy wouldn’t just jump away and laugh in his face should have been impossible. Instead, the guy flew backwards several feet and took down another enemy.
The sound of gunfire whipped his head around, but he relaxed when he saw it was Yseult covering him. With another rasping grunt, he grabbed a dead soldier and hurled him across the room, giving Yseult and some breathing room.
This was incredible, he thought as he plowed through the enemies. He’d never felt so strong, so aware and so alive. He knew that this was going to kill him, and that McKay would have to science-magic it away, but right now, he was enjoying the unlimited power in his body. Something pinched him in the shoulder; he glanced down as a bullet pinged to the floor.
He’d been shot, and all that he had to show for it was a hole in his shirt.
He vaguely heard the transporter again as the four of them surrounded the leader of the Genii. “Surrender,” Bates ordered, feeling strange saying that without a gun in his hand to back up the statement.
“Never,” the man rasped just before he grabbed at Evana. He didn’t even get hands on her before she high-kicked him in the chin, sending him staggering back into Ayato. The slim Japanese man struck him in the back of the head with the hilt of his knife and the Genii collapsed to his knees, stunned. Bates watched with grim satisfaction as Yseult grabbed his arms and bound him.
“Good work. Is everyone okay?” he asked his team, feeling pride swelling in his chest. They’d had a hell of a bad time, but they’d pulled through it, together.
Before they could answer, Shepherd came into the room, lowering the weapon in his hands when he saw the status of the room. “I guess you guys handled the big rescue,” he said ruefully, looking at the bound Genii. “There are several more up the hall that I subdued.” He paused and asked, “Why is everyone staring at me?”
“You got hot,” Evana said bluntly, one blue eyebrow rising. “Ridiculously so.”

Yes, Shepherd got an appearance boost.

They never had a chance to make it inside. The wave was almost on top of the city, and humanity had never won a footrace with nature at her worst. Curtis and Inoae were still dozens of yards from the door when the wave hit their shield.
The roar of the water’s path being interrupted was immense. It was louder than a train as the water surged against the energy field and rushed up the dome; Atlantis shook like a rung bell as the city pushed against the water attacking it. Curtis and Inoae went down in a heap. For a moment, the field flashed and seemed to falter; then the lightning bolt smashed into a nearby tower and the shield recovered and held.
Curtis and Inoae rolled apart and looked up; the wall of water was rushing over the protective dome, across the city and into the sea on the other side. It was an incredible sight; one that no one had seen before, and likely one they wouldn’t see again—at least not until the next storm.

Moira sagged with relief as the danger passed on both sides. A ragged cheer went up from the scientists and soldiers will in the Gate Room. Hugs and handshakes went around the room; even Zelenka forget himself enough to hug the person next to him, who happened to be Moira. She tolerated it for three seconds, then firmly pushed him away. He mumbled an apology to her, his cheeks red.
They’d done it. They’d survived.
