Origami

I'm suprised that no one here is using this mode of communication for anything more than simple socialization. We push more data around this mudball in a day than was stored in every library that has existed or ever existed and yet we're comparing bust sizes and how many asses were kicked. Could you imagine what our community can accomplish networked like we are? Doesn't the state of this site sadden you, now that you see what I'm seeing?

Look at yourselves. Not just a passing glance, but actually employ your eyes.

You all got something special here and I just joined in. I wouldn't have if I didn't see the raw potential.

The name is Kyon. Kyon Mikamura. People call me Origami, and fittingly so. What you call me, doesn't have to be formal. I'm just glad to be here.

Don't knock simple socialisation - sometimes it's the only thing that matters. The lack of a peer group can cause serious deficiencies in people.

Yes. We could take over the world. (No, really. We could. Doesn't mean we should.)

Short Answer: No.

Longer Answer: Mmmm... Still no. I'll let you guess why, all Yoda-like. Now get me a beer as payment for my wise counsel.

I do. Every day.

Join in because you want to talk to novas, to laugh at/with novas, hook up with novas, have 3 am conversations about what is best in life(*) with novas, and generally hang out with novas. Maybe you'll even get around to physically meeting up with novas offline (yeah, I know that's a two-oh term. I'm old. Sue me. But get in line.)

Don't come to the nova-only boards with a grand idea of what the place should be. It's like someone coming into your favorite real-ale-serving pub, saying "What this place needs to be is an OpNet Cafe and Wine Bar!" then rearranging the tables and changing the jukebox selection to synth-pop. Offense may be taken, is all I'm getting at, and no that's not me saying that I'm offended.

Nice to have you here - welcome to the madhouse and don't step in the Terats.

It's nice to have a few idle moments on an OpNet terminal for a change (life's been busy).

(*)To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentation of their women. In case I needed to say it.

My primary use for OpNet terminals is figuring out how to do more interesting things with them than browse the OpNet. It's an impressive technological achievement, but I have little interest in it beyond its applications as a communication and information gathering tool.

Anyway, I can tell you've not interacted with many Novas. If we were to fully network this site would be full of arguments so petty you'd feel your brains dribbling out of your ears.

That is what I was afraid of, WhiteRain. The "too many cooks syndrome".

Ein: How in the bloody hell are you still able to be posting, is what I am wondering. Also, you are right, I have a hard time socializing. One of my co-workers that I've spoken to on occasion has said that it's because my brain requires stimuli now that isn't received from simply talking to somebody. At least that's what she said.

Also my intent isn't to take over the world. World domination is pedestrian.

If you want to take it as an insult, fine, but I doubt you take it as an insult when your alarm clock goes off. Quite frankly I don't wish to stir the pot, because it was not my intent.

I'm direct, yes, I won't apologize for that.

I am sorry that my words were taken as an insult.

World domination....what an odd concept, I've always thought. It seems to imply that the person running the world would still keep things much as they are, only with themselves on the top of the proverbial pyramid. As novas, aren't we already there? And who really would want baselines thinking that we had some responsibility to them as they seem to think their rich and powerful do?

If you want things to stay the same, why bother taking over? The only real reason for doing so is to effect change.

Well, there's power and money too, of course, but really as novas we already have one, and the other is easy to get. Why add the responsibility and blame of running things unless you want more than just power and wealth?

Oh, that sounds interesting.

What do we spend our lives doing, pray tell?

I hadn't noticed, myself, so I could do with someone else telling me what I'm up to.

Alright. See, this always pisses me off. "Why are you wasting your life?" "Why don't you do this?" "Why are you doing that?" Who are you to think that whatever thing we're doing is not only what we want from life but very fulfilling.

Being happy doesn't mean that everything is perfect. It means that you've decided to look beyond the imperfections. If anyone, nova or baseline, is happy with their lives and the way things are, than who are any of us to judge others for their use of their very short time on this planet?

And what is it about what we are doing that is wasting our lives away? Spending time with my loved ones, laughing as I destroy my friends (and they destroy me) on Opbox, helping those who need me, and generally being the best possible person I can be is far from 'wasting' my life. Okay, sometimes I watch a few TV shows that I really wish I hadn't and it's like totally 30 minutes of my life stolen from me, but still, on the whole I'd say things are good for me.

Besides, it's my life to waste.

It's not jaded. Don't you get that?

Who the hell do you think you are, really? Throwing around words like 'jaded' and inferring that people are sightless simply because they don't agree with your pseudo-intellectual 'wakeup call' and start shouting "Oh yes great sifu, teach and we shall learn" in chorus. Sounds like you're the one who's bloody jaded - jaded and bored enough to come and condescend to people you know nothing about.

For the record, I do know some of these people. Here's a clue for you:

Chang is an ultimate artist. Everything she perceives is fodder for music, or sculpture, or painting. We've talked a lot and I've learned a lot from her: not just about music, but about living your own life. If she's jaded, then she's doing a REALLY good job of faking that passionate insight and enthusiasm.

Contessa is smart, fun and one of the most down to earth novas I know. She's not trying to strap on the spandex and save the world - she's just trying to have a normal young life, go to college, and have fun with her friends. That's someone who enjoys their life without needing to add extra thrills or embark on grand schemes. Which isn't to say she can't or won't, just that so far she doesn't need to. Because she's not jaded, you dick.

Einherjar I've met only briefly. Okay, so he's an Elite and has killed for a living. Maybe some could say he'd have to be pretty jaded to do that. But he was ALSO there at the Crush saving people, ferrying the wounded and dead, working as an extra EMT. He helped out for free. Just last month he's saved thousands of lives, risked his own life and livelihood to do so, and pretty much everyone I've met likes the man, from Jason 'Bombshell' Bellefleur to the baseline cast and crew on Valkyrie. He doesn't sound jaded to me.

I met Shae briefly at the VCCE Event. She was fun to talk to, playful but smart. She made me think about what I was saying as well as what she was saying. She gave every impression of enjoying her life and loving her friends.

If you're looking for someone who matches the definition of jaded, literally meaning 'made dull, apathetic, or cynical by experience or by surfeit', then that'd be ME. I'm sick and tired of judgemental slapnuts imposing their values of right and wrong on others. Feeling that it's their place to pass comment without knowing a goddamn thing other than what their capacious egos tell them. So yeah, I'M jaded. And you know what else?

Fuck you! And fuck everyone like you.

You're either a troll or a pretentious asshole. Either way, fucking grow up.

Ugh... I express a bit of a different point of view, and I'm called a troll? At least I have an eye on the bigger picture.

Why?

Because I can't stop.

It's like asking a person to stop being able to see or smell.

Look, obviously I'm using a wrong approach, but dammit I'm not retracting what I said prior.

And you just have to share it with us, right? Share your massive insight and wisdom and let us all know how foolish and wrongheaded we are. Call us colorblind while you're at it: again with the implication we're partially-sighted whilst you see ALL.

Bigger picture my glowing golden ass. The only thing you can't stop doing is opening your fat mouth and digging your own 'asshole pit'.

Look.

There are people here I respect and consider peers.

Einherjar stands for more than his pocketbook.

Chang has the potential to be the greatest artist that has ever lived.

That oddball with the pink Hair... she's amusing, but she also is one of the better inventors I've seen based on her track record.

Here's the deal, Sunshine. If you would turn off the bravado and actually think for a second, you'd realize that I am not like other people. 95% of the world out there I can't socialize with because they are dead to me in their expression. The vast majority out there are walking zombies of intellectual nullification. They are happy in their ignorance of even the simplest details.

All I got are a couple detectives and a computer technician to keep me company, and even they enter intellectual ruts.

The majority of people, Nova or Human BORE me. That's why I am in the work I am in. Because putting the puzzle together, figuring the mystery, is what I do.

Bravado: From the French bravade and the Spanish bravada, meaning swagger or bravery. Has come to mean a pretense of courage, defiant or swaggering behaviour, or a disposition towards false and showy expressions of bravery.

See also Bluster: which means to brag or attempt to overwhelm with words, to speak in an overly arrogant manner.

I'm sure 95% of the world is better off that you can't socialize with them. If the majority of people BORE you so much, why not turn that vaunted insight on yourself and ask why? Are you so Taint-ridden that people don't matter to you? Is it the fact that you have this enormous swollen nova brain that makes you such a complete buttwipe?

Hey. Newsflash! You're damn sure not the smartest person on this board. I have novabrain too, and I don't have your apparent issue with all the 'zombies' out there. Contessa is smarter than me, and she has no trouble being, y'know, nice.

It's not your intelligence that makes you such an ass. You're like those two megabrains that did their best to rip Jason to pieces on Maher - a socially disfunctional turd who feels that because they're smarter that they don't need to bother with politeness.

Maybe you can solve THAT fucking puzzle.

My, Origami, you have stirred our sun to a boil!

Allow me to be a little less confrontational for a moment, since - in keeping with the name of this topic - I find you rather amusing as opposed to aggravating.

You did not come here expressing a mystery. You declared judgement on people you know nothing of, people who have the potential to be your fellows and peers and equals. The one thing that tends to unite Novas is a predilection for treating people as we are treated (I'm aware that alone is controversial, but I've observed the trend in the vast majority of Novas I've encountered).

You say I have the potential to be the greatest artist that has ever lived? Perhaps. I am not the only Nova artist, though. Why do I have that potential, Origami? What about my art makes you think that? I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say you're not just bleating what other people say. Make your case for my ability.

It's mostly academic interest, though. Your assessment will change nothing. This is a journey, and all we do now is but a step along it, most likely not indicative of its terminus.

And please, slide from the saddle, loose your feet from the stirrups, and leave the high horse to pasture. It is not a show of wisdom to proclaim you have an eye on the bigger picture yet offer no glimpse of it. That is a threadbare attempt to lord one's own intellect over other people. The wise attempt to guide those who are not, but they do not thrust their wisdom in the face of those who do not seek it. That way lies arrogance, and selfishness, and pride.

If you wish to wake up anybody, Origami, you may well do it by the metaphorical equivalent of banging some pans together and shouting, but they're apt to just roll over and go back to sleep after the annoyance has passed. If you wish to make an actual difference or be listened to, you will not do it by making ignorant comments about how we do or do not live our lives.

That said, I do ostensibly support your intention. But I have no time for well-intentioned foolishness.

Edit: Oh, and thank you for the compliments, Sunshine.

Sunshine, stop it. Please? Origami may not be see he world the same as some of us, but this world is still as much his as it is ours and he's entitled to view it in whichever way pleases him the most.

It's one thing question his opinions, or disagree, or debate, but he doesn't deserve to be insulted or verbally abused simply because he shared an outlook that is drastically different than our own. A lot of Mega-Brains have difficult times socializing after they erupt because their logic forces them to breakdown and over analyze even the tiniest things. It happens, even to me.

The real curse is simple, they can't stop thinking long enough to enjoy life. I know why the sky is blue, and it doesn't make it any less beautiful. I know how, down to the mathematical formula, how my gravitic powers work but that doesn't make floating around the garage any less fun.

Origami is bored. Not because people bore him, but because he can't stop thinking and take the time to enjoy his life. That's his cell and he will sit in it until he solves the mystery on how to open the door to it.

He not a bad person, just a victim of his own reasoning.

He's entitled to his viewpoints, Ceej. He's just not entitled to inflict them on us. Free expression without personal responsibility is just an excuse to be a dick and then say "Hey, I'm allowed to express myself, dammit."

...

Hell.

I'm sorry...

I'm sorry, Ori (hey that rhymes). It's not you I'm really mad at. There's no excusing me going thermo on you. I'm not feeling myself lately.

Sorry Contessa for, uh, making an ass of myself. You're right. If I wasn't so stupidly angsty right now I'd have reasoned that out myself and just left well enough alone.

Sorry everyone else for going OpPostal. frown I'm going to get offline and go curl up somewhere till I feel less fissile.

Anger is as worthwhile as joy, Sunshine. There's no reason to be ashamed of it.

You're quite correct, Contessa. That has always been the crux of the problem faced by the intelligent, not simply the 'super' smart as people like to put it. Men of intellect have suffered depression throughout the ages for the precise reason that they find it hard to surround themselves with their equals and thus grow bored of people.

Of course, not all of them needed that company, or were humble enough that they never thought of themselves as all that bright in the first place.

No worries, man. I'd be pissed off too if the Pee-Ewes were trying to lock up my girl. I think most of us get that you're under some pressure.

And those that don't get it can go fuck themselves on Pax's fist.

Oddball? Amusing?

Forgive me for coming late to the party, but Really? I've been busy getting set up in Nippontai and what are you doing huh? Playing Sherlock Holmes.

Listen up, newb, I don't care who you are or who you think you are. Even less about your "ideal world". You're just another, smaller shark in a ocean with bigger sharks who would love nothing more than show you the lay of the land.

I recommend we speak in a private channel so I can straighten you out, before someone gets the wrong idea and straightens you out over a pike. Be glad that I give you this. I should watch you become chum with your little outburst. Pray to god Sunshine didn't take this personal enough to want to find you.
