The Boys

My wife is lustfully enamored of Russell Crowe. Fanatic comes to mind. So Russell has been approached to play Billy Butcher in an Adam McKay directed big screen version of the Garth Ennis/Darrick Robertson comic series. The series, as one might expect of Ennis, is over-the-top violent, profane and borderline pornographic, perfect for elderly maiden aunts, small children and the weak of heart in your lives. And my wife is excited about all new Crowe movies, but she has no idea of what he would be signing up for. I am going to offer her a couple to read. For those not in the know, the boys are sort of CIA sponsored equalizers. They keep superheroes in line, make them pay for their crimes and hubris. Usually through blackmail, violence and intimidation, sometimes through straightforward murder.

One of the characters is based on Simon Pegg, so we could see a Crowe/Pegg movie, as so many of us have been clamoring for. As McKay points out in the clip and in the article, it's a $100 million anti-hero movie in a market glutted with superheroes and would be a hard sell at any time. The last rated R anti-superhero movie with that kind of budget was not particularly warmly embraced by the public.
