[BESM3 - RoD] Episode 0: In over your head

Lady Aceworth

Recommended Posts

Sagara sat in her chair in the center "command and control" room of her office. She had gotten it all set up over the past year to monitor news feeds, weather, sattelite orbits... things more intresting to a military official or a world leader than a CEO. But she has her fingers in many a hole in the dike, and lately there's been more leaks springing up.

She wraps her fingers on her console table, impatiently. "Where the bloody hell is everyone? They better not be held up by..."

She hears a chirp on the main door. "Enter!" She says, some of her impatience being let off.

Click to reveal..
When you walk in you see a woman in her early thirties of a mixed Indian/European decent sitting at a computer screen built into a table surrounded by other computer screens. This is obviously the command and control for the entire corporations activities. She herself is wearing what looks like a black bodysuit under a white lab-coat.

It only took a moment to compare the photo in hand with the woman sitting in the chair, this was Miss S. Dash allowed himself a smile before finding a seat at the long table. "Security wasn't a problem." Dash commented, already assuming she knew who he was. "I must say, he was right. You've done quite well for yourself, just by judging what's in public view. I imagine the producers of Star Trek will want to shoot the next sequel in the Cardiff offices."

Dr. Lang had told him of the summons, and obediently he'd reported to the building where he'd been summoned. He bowed to the woman seated there, assuming that she was the one who'd had him summoned. To the man that was seated there he also bowed politely. obviously he wouldn't be the only operative here.

The woman didn't look like the corporate executives he knew, but he could always be wrong. His guard was up and he nodded as he rose from his bow. Sakurako seldom looked as a normal executive also. And with contact being lost, he thought it all too much a coincidence.

"You called for me and I have come. I trust you have something you wish for me to do?" His voice was a rich baritone, entirely not what one would expect.

Perhaps most notable was his size. At over two meters in height, Ryu was a giant among most of the easter hemisphere.

Yoshi

A slight Japanese male, scarcely a meter and a half wearing an impeccable tuxedo, complete with cane and top-hat walks into the office, escorted by a large robotic dog. The man surveys all three people in the room before recognizing and bowing to Miss S.

"Masashi Yoshikenji, at your serv.." he trails off, eyes flickering, capturing the visual feast before him on the many computer screen.

After a few moments, he shakes himself slightly, remembering where he is and why, reddening slightly at the slight to the head of Poseidon Technologies.

"My apologies if I'm overdressed. A slight misconfiguration with a new experiment, nothing serious." he assures them.

“I think they would have to fight the Doctor Who film crews off first.” Ren quipped in response to Dash’s remark as he strode into the room like he owned the place.

Seeing as he was going to meet the head of a very large company Ren had decided it would be best to dress for the occasion. He wore a crisp white shirt with black trousers and had his blond hair pulled into a tight ponytail. He also carried a briefcase at his side.

He quickly took a seat and faced Sagara “So what can I do for you today my lady.” He said flashing a smile.

"Ah good, we're all here then..." She says, setting her labcoat on her chair then walking over to a viewscreen showing a sattelite picture of the North Sea, with several red markers on it. She manipulates the picture, quietly.

"And Ren, They DID use the upper halls for an episode."

She zooms in on an area labeled PT-1 on the foreward viewscreen.

"Yoshi... I've seen stranger, I mean, see this suit I'm wearing?" She says, gesturing to her black bodysuit. "I'd fit in piloting a robot or something..." She says jokingly. "But... this meeting is far from a social one I'm afraid. I sincerely need everyone's assistance."

She says, placing her hands on the table screen, showing a table-view of the same foreward viewscreen. "Quite frankly, I'm drawing at straws."

One of the Poseidon Platforms came up on the screen, the one Sakurako had last been reported at. Immediately his demeanor changed.

"I assume you have lost all contact with the platform. The redmarkers, they are other platforms you've lost contact with then?"

Yoshi

Yoshi studies the screen indicated, frowning in thought, idly tapping out a beat with the cane in his left hand. A problem with the oil rigs in the North Sea? Damage from the recent disaster, perhaps? He returns to scanning the other screens in the room for more data.

The robodog beside him sits quietly at his side, ears perked.

"The other markers register other active oil platforms in the area."

She overlays a second screen showing the current weather conditions, and the blip for the PT-1 platform turned orange.

"There's a fog layer that does not correspond to any known weather pattern. What's worse is that there's been a radio black-out in a five kilometer area around the platform."

She straightens her suit out. "What's more, the last ship we sent in also dissapeared from contact. We did pick up a distress beacon though outside the fog bank. Not sure if it's a lifeboat signature or a personal beacon.

That happened 30 minutes ago... If that signal is a person in the water, they've got 8 hours. Before they start getting hypothermia, with survival suit on. Otherwise, that's a corpse out there."

Yoshi

The robodog whines softly at the mention of a corpse.

"If you wish us to investigate, I presume you have means of getting us there swiftly enough to do some good. But you need us to what? Study the phenomenon?" Yoshi looks around at the other people assembled.

"No," he says, face falling as he comprehends. "You wish us to protect the rescuers."

She zooms in. "If that's a poor soul that didn't get anything on, then that's marking a corpse. If that's marking someone in the water with the proper gear then that person's alive. If it's a lifeboat... then they got lucky."

She zooms to ocean-level. "That's as close as I can get." She says as a latitude and longitute pop up on screen. "Unfortunately the earliest photo I got is one you could access off of google maps. The rest is up to everyone. I would reccomend if you do plan on something rash like teleporting or something... that you should make sure you won't be joining those in distress..."

She sits in her seat. "The current sea temperature is 4 degrees celsius. 30 mile per hour winds up to the fog bank. At least 3 foot waves."

She looks at the team. "Anyone actually capable of withstanding that here?"

Yoshi

The robodog stands up, tail-wagging.

"Not me, personally," Yoshi responds. "But my K9 models are weather-proof, and water capable. My Surveillance models are also weather proof, though they won't be able to do much besides fly out there and return with footage. They are fast, though."

Long nodded and was gone, in the air above the contact, the biting cold winds quickly sending a chill to the bone. "Damn it's cold." looking down amidst the roiling waves he spied a Poseidon crisis suit, it's locator still active and flashing.

His form seemed to shift as he changed modes again, adapting to the situation. The cold no longer affected him, indeed nothing environmental would as he swept down and scooped up the suilt in his powerful grip.

"I have you now. Are there others?" His voice was crisp and clear as he he tried to find more. He didn't have much time, not as things were.

The voice that answered was female, though he couldn't understand her. "Is there anyone else I need to find?"

Yoshi

"Intel and medical support is right up my alley," Yoshi says, glad not to be in a combat situation. He had already had a lifetime's worth of combat with Aki-sama.

Yoshi pulls out two small black cubes and tosses them in the air. Pulling a tablet out of an inner tuxedo pocket, he presses three different glowing icons. The black cubes begin to unfold and expand. Before hitting the ground, one of the cubes has turned into another robodog.

The other, however, unfolds into a strange cylindrical robot reminiscent of R2D2, if R2D2 had ever wielded multiple syringes and glowed with blue light.

"Guard!" said Yoshi to his two canine companions. "Doctor, prepare for emergency response, possible trauma, exposure, hypothermia."

Long nods and hoists her from the water, and shifts again, the winds biting again. "Hold on tight."

Time and space bend to his will, and there's a rapid expulsion of air from part of the room, heralding Long's return, along with his passenger.

The beacon has disappeared from the North Sea, now registering in the office.

"Medic." he calls with practiced ease.

He stands back allowing the no doubt shocked woman her space, Teleportation took alot of getting used to for those who hadn't experienced it often.

"She was the only one alive. There were three more in the water, all cold."

"Dammit..."

She walks over to the suited individual and helps her open her hood and suit.

"Are you alright?"

"Yeah... I... just got a little cold, ma'am."

The rescued woman sits down, her white hair coviering her face. Some blood trickles down onto her shirt. "Just got a bloody node from the... explosion... there's..." She starts to sob. "No one left... they got us all. I couldn't protect them... they screamed..."

Ryu sat back, as the nanites went back into their dormant state. He'd expended some power to make it so quickly. He relaxed. The first phase was done, and he had managed to save someone, so it was worth it in the end.

The woman with white hair brushes back her hair from her face as a medical drone looks her over. She looks at Long. "Thank you." She says before lying back using the life vest she was wearing as a pillow, letting a medical drone scan her.

Click to reveal..
You know this face plain as day. It's Sakurako. I think you got some questions to ask.

"Sakurako..." Miss S says, kneeling down to her. "What do you mean they all screamed?"

"They... screamed... like monsters."

Long's blue eyes widened, and he was glad he wasn't in his natural form. "Sakurako... you are welcome."

His blue eyes seemed to blaze with Azure fire, and the air around him seemed to crackle with palpable anger. The red curtain of rage that someone would put her in danger was threatening to fall.

Only his desire to know who to point himself at kept him rooted there. "What were you doing on the platform?" His gaze was between the two women, though his tone seemed to imply he was speaking to Miss S."

"I'd like some clear, no-bullshit answers, right now." There was little mistaking what would happen otherwise. In the past Ryu had proven to be incredibly level headed and detached, uless it involved members of his family. He let things get personal understandably, even though he wasn't ready to reveal who he was to them yet.

"What was Sakurako doing on the platform?" Miss S says, scratching her head. "You say it like I had a scheme or something. I sent her there to help with a project. Notice the mysterious auroras that have been appearing around the planet lately?"

She pulls up various videos from YouTube. "These auroras aren't connected to natural phenomena. Neither is that fog... Thing is, several disasters recently can also be tied into these auroras."

Sakurako sits up. "I... and the European research branch... we were at Platform 1, setting up a... electromagnetic variance detector at that location. The... auroras weren't associated with current solar-storm activity... so..."

Sakurako sighs, looking at the floor. "So I and... the team looked for some other source. We had found something and the director of the team was starting to report to me when the warning klaxons sounded. That's when... they..."

Sakurako's gaze goes blank. "They came..."

For all of it, the quiet, the worry, Dash was surprisingly quiet, listening to the situation, understanding what was happening. To be fair, there were limits to what he could do, and though he had the Adaptability suit, the man named Ryu had volunteered first. And to be frank, he had made the trip teleporting in short times.

Interestingly, was his buildup of anger and frustration. They must have a good relationship, this Ryu and Sakurako. Still, at last he had his chance to speak.

The younger blond man had his first real word in and action to the others, quietly rising and walking over to Sakurako. "Who came? Can you describe your attackers?"

"I didn't get much... only... that they wore gray armored suits... lots of life support gear and large rifles.

I managed to kill a few after they showed they were hostile. Not much you can do when you fire off a strip of metal accelerated with a electromagnetic push. But they fought back... I did all I could to escape with what few crewmembers were left. I tried getting the lifeboat away, and I thought I had succeeded when I saw the rescue ship but...

They caught us all... I managed to survive by scrambling their sensors."

She wipes some blood from her nose. "I taxed myself just keeping warm and jamming everything. I even had to duck below water a couple times... thought once I'd drown out there... my god, these animals... they were brutal!"

Dash kept on listening impassively, these sounded like a clearly professional goon squad of someone's. At the mention of brutality, a little disgust did show on his face- though these men did what they had been sent to do, there were missions, and then there was senseless excessive killing. Or other similar categories like torture or the like.

"You killed some?" He queried, nodding and then looking firmly at Miss S. "I'd say, Miss S, that you should warm up the VTOL. If the corpses of the attackers or any other evidence of their identities can be found... we'd investigate the platform anyway."

Miss S Sighs. She knows she still doesn't know much of the current situation, and the team, while possibly capable, could just as easily be going to their deaths.

"All I wanted were some investigators that could handle this, and any danger that might come their way... I didn't expect this to start off as a possible brawl to the death." She says. "I'll get the VTOL ready. Should take about 10 minutes to get ready, and it'll be a trip of roughly 30 minutes there."

She walks over to Sakurako. "You did all you could, I didn't ask you to fight."

"I want to go back." Sakurako says flatly.

"You still might be injured..." Miss S is stopped with a slap to the face. "I wanna go back DAMMIT! There's something there and alot of people died because of it! I have to know what they were killed for! I'm going and that's final!"

"How do you think I feel, Sakurako... Those were the best men and women I knew." Miss S says, massaging a cheek. Keeping calm, even for a sudden slap to the face. "I... I understand how you feel, but I made a promise..."

"I... I know, Miss S... I'm... sorry... I overstepped my bounds." Sakurako says, but she stands firm, staring right at Miss S. "But I still want to go..." Sakurako says, her voice trembling with revenge on the breath.

Long shook his head as he replied to Sakurako in Japanese. "No. You will not go. You should not go. Stay here and recover, and let us do what she has brought us together to do."

He rest a hand on her shoulder to keep her in place. "You are tired, taxed as you said. You should remain here, recovering." There was a vehemence in his tone that would brook no argument, and eerily enough sounded much like their dead father. "We will see justice done."

Sakurako shakes when she hears his voice. "I..."

She clutches a fist, holding back her first impulse. "They were my responsibility, sir... I failed... I have to make ammends... somehow."

She looks down, at her feet. "They all died because... I was a coward."

He looked at her his blue eyes seeming to core into her intensely. "That may be, and one day I'm sure you will. I did not rescue you simply to watch you throw yourself back in before you are ready."

"Do you think that's what they want? That your friends and comrades would wish you to go in unprepared to face the enemy that slew them? I don't believe this is the case. You will do their memory honor by staying here and helping coordinate things once you are recovered."

His tone darkened. "You have told us of battle, it is time to let those who fight do so."

"I'd hate to barge in on this, but he is right, Saku-chan." Miss says, walking over with a office chair and a welcome thermal blanket over the shoulders. "You'll do me no good being shark food or six feet under... think of the lost resources I'd have to make up..."

Sakurako seems to listen to Miss S more than Long at this point.

"You... you're right." She says, sitting down. "I would do no good to anyone dead. Not to you, or the new team here... Who are you people anyways?" Sakurako says, looking puzzled as she adjusts the warmth on the blanket. "I thought Miss S hired some girls some of the techs here at Headquarters have been whispering about or something..."

The autodoc busily took the woman's vital signs, applied chemical warm packs, cleaned and disinfected wounds and determined that the injection of stimulants or the deployment nanobots was not necessary. It did, however, present the woman with a thermos of steaming soup before withdrawing.

Yoshi had stayed quietly in the background while the autodoc worked and the others talked. He didn't know any of these people and he scarcely knew what was going on. But a direct question needed an answer, at least after she was stable.

"That soup is hot, so please be careful. Your blood pressure and temperature are low, of course, so please drink all of it. Masashi Yoshikenji, at your service. Miss S. brought me here as a technical consultant, I guess."

Yoshi was already calculating changes he could make to his equipment to better adapt to the harsh conditions of the North Sea.

“Fighting so soon?” Ren said to no one in particular as he reached a hand into his pocket and took out a pack of cigarettes.

“Pleasure to meet you miss, I am Ren.” He offered the slightest of bows. “My speciality is love not war but I guess I am not too bad in a scrap either.” He smirked as he put a cigarette to his lips and lit it. It seemed things had gotten serious so quickly, and it had been such a peaceful day.

“Just wait here like the other say, this won’t take us long.” He said as he stood up ready to leave when the rest were.

Dash glanced over to the others and then back at Sakurako and Miss S. "You can call me Carpenter for now. We're here to deal with people, certain ones undoubtedly including those who struck your platform." His face was losing its youthful elements of amusement and the calm was morphing into rock-hard seriousness. "People who want power, and will do anything to get it. This is a humanitarian project in the end, though atypical."

Appraisal glimmered in his eyes as he turned to Miss S. "I suppose you're going to stay here then? Shame enough, I wish I'd the chance to see why he liked you so much."

She adjusts her blanket. "Thank you, everyone..." she says before Ren notices a spark hit his lips. About as uncomfortable as putting your tongue on a 9-volt battery. "And please, no smoking, Ren. There's air filters in here but I'm allergic. My sneeses get... hah... hah... violent..."

She stares up at a light and manages to resist the urge... "Sorry for the discomfort. Smoking is just a annoying habit."

She then looks at Dash, for a moment she seems distracted by him. "Who, might I ask?"

For some odd reason, she's more curious as to who this "man" is than Dash himself.

Miss S sighs. "Sakurako... you could have just asked him to put that out. Also forgive Sakurako, Dash. She's a cold fish... and well... not interested in men." She says, before standing in front of dash. For an awkward moment, Miss S is lost in Dash's eyes.

"Oh... uh... where was I? Oh, right... Okay, the VTOL is warmed up on the pad. Jets are primed and ready. That's your best option to travel as a team. And probably safer, since I wager some of you get sorta cold."

She adjusts her suit. "Of course if anyone needs to requisition any equipment, now is the time."

“Agh christ!” Ren cursed as the shock hit him. We wiped a hand across his lip as the sensation faded. “What the hell was that about.” He grabbed the now charred cigarette that had fallen to the floor in his shock and tossed it in a nearby bin.

“I have most of my own stuff but I wouldn‘t mind one of those suits if its really that cold.” He said turning to Miss S and getting back on topic. “I‘ll be waiting at the plane, and will happily fly it if you don‘t want to risk any more people.”

He exited the room figuring seeing the plane and lighting up outside would help his mood. He muttered quietly to himself as he left “Stupid girl and whatever the hell she did, thank god it wasn‘t my last one.”
