The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

My sentiments exactly. The art book will end up on ebay, so if I really want it, I can get it that way.

The whole concept of a plastic dragon just baffles me...who would want that crap?

I can see perhaps if it fit according to size for some miniatures game and came with stats, that it would appeal to a select wedge of geekdom, but it doesn't.

*shrug* Beats me. Bungie did it right with Halo 3, their legendary edition came with a replica of Master Chief's helmet that also held all the game cases. It was cool, served a storage purpose (however rudimentary), and was marketing off of the cool caché of Master Chief himself, the protagonist of the series. This is just some dragon. WTF?

The series isn't known for a lot of game-to-game continuity, in part because of the extreme free-form customization they allow you. Their best bet IMO would have been to market the game with an actual (replica) Elder Scroll. That might have triggered the geek reflex stronger that "random plastic dragon guy you have no attachment to".

Its strange too because the Legendary edition(s) of Fallout 3 were all badass. From a fallout 3 metal lunchbox, to the crazy PipBoy alarm clock that was Amazon.com exclusive they really hit the marketing nail on the head.

Well, the whole thing about Skyrim has always been, "It's gots DRAGONS!!!"

I think the marketing guys may be overestimating the degree to which fantasy gamers are attached to their flying dinosaurs. Dragons are fine and cool and that, but am I buying Skyrim because it's gots dragons? Nah. The other stuff sounds way cooler. Though dragons are cool too.

On the other hand, I know more than one compulsive mini collector that might go for this. A lot of 20-30 somethings out there with IT jobs and solitary lifestyles who have a bit more cash than they know what to do with.

It does? I thought it was about a guy with a weird helmet that ate from a food truck ...

Seriously though, I find that funny because for me it was "Oh, hells yes, another Elder Scrolls game!" Dragons literally never made one iota of difference to me. I'm buying this based purely on the 14+ months of gameplay I got out of Oblivion, and the 8 ish I got out of Morrowind (before I got sick of the bad quest system and gave up).

A short vid showing concept art and the final rendered in-game result. They have released soooo much before the game, I'm starting to wonder if I will be amazed by anything as I play it. Before you would play a game and ooh and aah over things, but in today's social media marketing, you are deluged in an effort to hype the product.

We are so close to release, I think I am going to try and avoid seeing or learning anything else about the game so I can feel like I haven't already played it. :)

Yeah, that really doesn't apply to me. I nerd rage when people post or tell me spoilers. I rarely if ever use online game guides (or book form). Even if it means I never find something. To me, half the fun is in the not knowing what's going to happen. The thrill of discovery or being surprised is why I play.

I only go online in 2 cases:

1) if I get stuck and get to the point where I'm frustrated and no longer having fun

2) for games like Skyrim & Fallout I like to see people's character creation guides because they are often more detailed about how a character works than the game manual is. Like with Morrowind and Oblivion where you only leveled when you trained 10 times with your class skills, and your attribute multipliers were dependant on the skills you leveled since you last leveled. It was a complex system that didn't get mentioned at all in the game manual and guides helped me figure out how to make a character who wouldn't end up at level 20 but with stats of a level 8 guy.

Hahaha, did you read Nick (dev) story about playing?

Spoiler!
It was the dead of night and I was trudging west out of Riverwood, winding my way up a small foggy hill and idly lighting plants on fire, when I heard someone screaming in the distance. As I approached the crest of the hill, a roaring campfire lit the unsurprisingly grim scene: a circle of bloodied bodies decorated the threshold of the encampment, the flickering of firelight the only sign of movement.

I approached the periphery of the post and began systematically looting the victims, because that's what you do when you find a murder scene in Skyrim. I stripped the first fellow bare, feeling pretty good about this little find, pocketing gold and a number of other sentimental objects like a thieving undertaker. And then I heard the sabrecat.

Out from behind one of the tents comes this giant goddamn beast, and immediately I'm thinking about running for it. These things are as large as bears and tough as hell, and it was late and I had places to go. Skyrim has taught me not to be insecure about these decisions. Sometimes I am an orc warrior god; sometimes I am just dogmeat.

I'm about to beat feet when my trusty companion, my beloved Nordic battlegirl, shoots the thing in the eyeball with her bow, draws a glowing sword and charges straight for the bastard. Now I'm in for it, because hey, nobody messes with my girlfriend and doesn't at least get shouted at a little. So I grab my greatsword, down a strength potion and sprint forward, fully expecting to be in for a close fight, if not a reload.

And just as I leap into the fray, right as I'm in mid-power swing, a world dragon drops down from out of nowhere, promptly offs the sabrecat with a flick of its wing, picks me up in its jaws and throws me a hundred yards to my death.

I'm calling that a night.

@56% As I just checked it.

I can understand a Steam authentication, but I shouldn't have had to download the whole bloody thing. What was the point of buying it? Did Bethesda just shitkick all PC players to focus on Xbox (I think the answer to that rhetorical question is yes)?

For something that started (and pretty much until this point) was a PC only title, they really bent us over.

OK, I need some help from you guys to confirm this, but I think that food items in your inventory "go bad" and are removed after a certain amount of time. I Swear I've picked an f-ton of leaks but went I went to cook they were all gone. Give it a look-see and let me know what you find.
