Table of Contents ... The Millennium's Edge FAQ

Humanity first set foot on another world more than a thousand years ago. Less than 150 years later, they sprang to the stars. Since then, history has followed the predictable course:

Discovery. Exploration. Colonization.

The known galaxy is filled with the descendants of man. More than three million worlds are home to nearly half a quadrillion people. Aliens, too, roam the stars, living and working alongside the humans whose teleportation drive made the expansion possible.

Invasion. War. Devastation.

This coexistence was not peaceful. The Aberrants, twisted progeny of humankind with the power to bend the laws of the universe to their will, assaulted the galaxy anew. Alien races and human colonies alike united and finally drove the mutants beyond the Rim, but the damage had been done. Earth was destroyed, its dominion over its starfaring children broken. Colonies were isolated. Worlds were laid waste. Wisdom was abandoned. Centuries of knowledge was shunned, lost, destroyed or -- tragically -- merely forgotten.

Fragmentation. Collapse. Barbarism.

Some tried to rebuild, while others took advantage. Republics, dominions, hegemonies and empires arose in enlightenment, descended into tyranny, and died in blood and fire in the space of decades or mere years. Travel to the outer systems came less and less frequently, then stopped altogether.

Preservation. Rediscovery. Rebirth.

Now, as human history approaches its fourth millennium, the mysterious Æon Institute emerges from centuries of self-imposed exile beyond the Rim to once again unite the galaxy in peace and enlightenment. Its agents, the psychomorphs, bring interstellar contact, guidance and long-lost knowledge to the Three Million. The Æonites have a huge task ahead of them, some would say an insurmountable task, and many do not welcome their return. But they have on their side three advantages: the power of psionics; the determination that comes from knowing their cause is just; and the leadership of the galaxy's first -- and greatest -- clairsentient.

Hope. Sacrifice. Unity.

Enlightenment.

It is the edge of the new millennium, and Maxwell Anderson Mercer lives.
